SUPERSONICS ACQUIRE C.J. McCOLLUM IN SIX PLAYER TRADE

Image
C.J. McCollum heads to Seattle, Lou Williams to Portland

There was a lot of chatter about a certain mid-tier Western Conference team trading their star shooting guard in the days leading up to the NBA season. But the Trail Blazers' decision to deal C.J. McCollum comes out of left field.

In a six player trade, the Blazers dealt McCollum, forward Jake Layman and guard Wade Baldwin to the Seattle SuperSonics in exchange for guards Lou Williams and Avery Bradley, as well as big man Montrezl Harrell and two future second round draft picks.

After a ten year absence, the Seattle SuperSonics finally return to the NBA, and will do so with a marquee player on hand. Like Tobias Harris, the team's other star, McCollum has yet to make an all-star team. However, many attribute that to him being overshadowed by his similar backcourt partner Damian Lillard, and playing in the talent-rich Western Conference. C.J. gives the Sonics a clear first option offensively, and a draw to fill up the newly renovated Key Arena.

On the flip side, Williams, Bradley and Harrell were all rotation players, and this move could hurt the team's defense and depth. Third year players Jake Layman and Wade Baldwin were throw-ins, and are unlikely to do much more than warm the bench. This trade is also a bit risky moving forward, as it leaves the team with no second round draft picks until 2022, and McCollum is owed $83 million over the next three seasons. The middle is a bad place to be in this league, and unless they strike gold in free agency or one of their recent lottery picks, that's where the Sonics will be for the foreseeable future.

For Portland, this is a surprising move. The team has made relatively few changes over the past couple years, and McCollum is a very popular player with the Blazers faithful. Many questioned the team's direction following their recent playoff debacle, and this deal does address it. Though it's hard to get excited about a trade where the other team receives the best player, there are some real positives here. Lillard and McCollum were an electrifying backcourt duo at times, but their overlapping skillsets and subpar defense held them back. With the team's chances of adding or developing a third star player being astronomical, it was time for them to move on.

The Blazers might not miss a beat this season, given who they got back in the deal. Reigning sixth man of the year Lou Williams is coming off a career season that nearly landed him an all-star selection. Avery Bradley is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career, but is a major upgrade defensively and has incentive to play well in a contract year. Analytics darling Montrezl Harrell is a tremendous replacement for the departed Ed Davis. But this deal is all about flexibility for Portland. Lou Williams is on an extremely team-friendly contract, while Bradley had a sizable expiring contract. The first few weeks of the season may prove pivotal for the Trail Blazers, as they could decide whether the team goes all in with this core, or opts to blow it up.

After a decade-long hiatus, the pacific northwest basketball rivalry is back! And what better way to kick things off than a blockbuster trade between the two teams? They will face off for the first time on November 8th.

Projected Sonics Rotation:
P. Beverley / C. McCollum / D. Gallinari / T. Harris / M. Gortat (M. Scott, L. Mbah a Moute, M. Teodosic, B. Marjanovic, S. Gilgeous-Alexander, J. Robinson)
Projected Blazers Rotation:
D. Lillard / A. Bradley / M. Harkless / A. Aminu / J. Nurkic (L. Williams, E. Turner, M. Harrell, S. Curry, N. Stauskas)

C.J. McCollum on the trade: "It's what, a three hour drive? Should be a pretty easy move. I mean, I'm obviously hiring people to handle that for me, but you know what I mean. Go Sonics!"

Lou Williams on the trade: "Well, I took a discount to stay in LA, and then they moved to Seattle and I was like 'okay, Seattle is a pretty cool place too'. Then they traded me to Portland, and I was like 'okay, at least I'll get to play with C.J. McCollum, he's good'. Then they told me that's who I was traded for, and I was like 'okay'.

Who won the trade?

MONTH IN REVIEW - October 2018
Record: 1-6 | ORTG: 103.7 (24th); DRTG: 115.3 (27th) | 15th in Conference

Image

Sonics basketball picked up where it left off in 2008 with the team stumbling out to a 1-6 start. The sold out season opener saw Seattle blow a double digit fourth quarter lead thanks to a dominating performance from Nikola Jokic, then follow that up with an aggravating OT loss to the hated OKC Thunder. The team's sole win would be a one point victory over New Orleans in which McCollum didn't play the fourth quarter.

The main concern about this team coming into the season was on the defensive end, and frankly the doubters have been right so far. However, the offense has struggled as well. C.J. McCollum, Tobias Harris and Marcin Gortat have been efficient and productive, but Pat Beverley and Danilo Gallinari have been putrid. Five games into the season, Doc Rivers swapped out Gallinari for Luc Mbah a Moute in the starting five to balance the lineups, but time will tell if that pays dividends. It is still extremely early, and the team has shown promise in close losses to Washington and OKC, but there could be major changes if things don't start soon. And the coach is usually the first one to be scapegoated...

On the bright side, rookie guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander looks like a stud, and has taken over the back-up point guard spot. And basketball is freaking back in Seattle!

BEVERLEY BENCHED, GILGEOUS-ALEXANDER TO START

Image

In a move that could signal the struggling Sonics adjusting their expectations of this season, veteran point guard Patrick Beverley has been benched in favor of rookie Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Beverley has struggled mightily, shooting under 30% from the field. Heralded mostly for his defense, Beverley has not prevented the Sonics from having a bottom five defense in the early stages of this season. Gilgeous-Alexander, a 6'6" rookie out of Kentucky, has impressed off the bench this season, averaging 10 points and making impact plays on both ends of the floor.

----------

"ENOUGH IS ENOUGH". 3-10 SONICS FIRE DOC RIVERS

Image

Following the Sonics' 133-108 loss to the Golden State Warriors, the team has announced that Doc Rivers has been relieved of his coaching duties. Assistant coach Sam Cassell will take over as the interim head coach. Rivers took over as head coach of the then Los Angeles Clippers in 2013, and led the team to four playoff appearances. "It sucks being fired, but it's not the first time it's happened, and its probably not the last," commented Rivers on the firing. Rivers' nonchalance is unsurprising - he had just signed a four year contract extension in February.

Hate all you want, but we'd be better off with Ballmer playing than Gallinari

----------

SAM CASSELL "PUMPED" TO COACH SONICS

Image
Mike Scott and Danilo Gallinari celebrate a big play

After years as an assistant, Sam Cassell finally gets his chance to lead a team. "Yeah it's gonna be great. To coach a below average team with chemistry issues and playoff aspirations.. gonna be great for my reputation as a coach. A real springboard." Cassell will make his coaching debut against the San Antonio Spurs.

Yeah, he's a good player but way overpaid and struggling so far this season. If a playoff spot looks out of reach by mid-season, there's a good chance there will be a fire sale

Hopefully you can turn things around. But if you're out of the playoff race by February you could go full Hinkie and trade out some veterans to try to get some extra draft picks.

Seattle is due some good basketball karma, so maybe you'll get a high pick (or two) in the lottery and land the next Durant.

MONTH IN REVIEW: November 2018
Record: 7-14 (6-8) | ORTG: 105.9 (21st); DRTG: 109.8 (19th) | 12th in Conference

Image

After falling to 1-8, the Sonics finally stepped up their game with blowout wins over the Timberwolves and Trail Blazers. It appeared that perhaps Doc Rivers had saved his job, but after losing to Milwaukee and Golden State, the coach was ousted in favor of Sam Cassell. It looked like Cassell might be righting the ship, as the team responded with three straight wins. However, Seattle was who they thought they were, losing four of five to finish the month, with particularly bad losses to Phoenix and Sacramento.

It hasn't been all bad for the Sonics. C.J. McCollum is averaging a career high 25.3 PPG and shooting 48% from 3. There has been some growing pains as he adjusts to being the number one option, but he has done well. Tobias Harris continues to be an efficient scoring threat. Rookie Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has shown promise on both ends of the floor as the team's new starting point guard. Marcin Gortat shows his age on defense and misses a lot of layups, but is third in the league in rebounding. On the other hand, veterans Pat Beverley and Danilo Gallinari have been dreadful, leading to their removal from the starting lineup.

At 7-14, the Sonics appear to be at an impasse. There are a lot of veteran players on this roster, and if it appears this team isn't going to be competitive, don't be surprised to see the Sonics be very active.
