Mamba Out: Kobe Bryant Retires As The Second All-Time Leading Scorer

Image

Image

DENVER, CO -- After 22 years, and barring a drastic change of heart, Kobe Bryant is riding off into the sunset. Addressing the crowd in the Los Angeles Lakers' final regular season game in Denver, Kobe declared "Mamba Out!" Bryant scored 12 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists, but the Nuggets won the game 104-80, putting a damper on his send-off.

Despite a valiant run during the second half of the season, the Los Angeles Lakers fell short of the eighth seed. Kobe, a five-time champion, had spoken of feeling inspired to make one last Playoff run. "You never know what'll happen until you get there," he remarked while the Lakers were still in Playoff contention. "You've just got to go out there and compete."

In addition to his five rings, Kobe Bryant ends his career with 37,410 points, the second-most all-time behind fellow Laker Legend, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Fittingly, Kobe passed Karl Malone for second place on January 31st, in a 108-107 victory over the Utah Jazz. He also scored a season-high of 30 points against the Boston Celtics - the team he and the Lakers defeated for his fifth ring - on February 22nd, but his regular season was peppered with single-digit scoring nights as age finally appeared to catch up to the Mamba.

"It's time," Kobe said after the game. "I have no regrets. I know this team will move forward with LeBron leading the way. It's been an honour to play my final four seasons with him. I'll be cheering them on from the sidelines."

Although Kobe insists that he's done, the Lakers are reportedly trying to talk him into returning for an unprecedented 23rd season. It's also expected that other teams will be making overtures in the hopes that Kobe might jump ship for a year-long farewell tour, and possible chance of a sixth ring to match the great Michael Jordan. Andrew Begley has expressed interest in Kobe joining him in Philadelphia, where Bryant was born. "It'd be an honour to help him get the all-time scoring record," commented A-Train, who himself has achieved new marks for scoring prowess this season.

Whatever happens next, one thing is clear: Kobe Bryant is bound for Springfield, following one of the best and most spectacular careers in league history. If the Mamba truly is out, then he's leaving us with a lifetime of memories.

Top-Seeded Timberwolves Lose Rubio for Season

Image

MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- The Minnesota Timberwolves finished the 2018 regular season on top of the West, but can't be feeling on top of the world right now, as two-time All-Star and starting point guard Ricky Rubio has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a torn MCL.

Rubio suffered the injury during the second quarter of the Timberwolves' regular season finale, a 114-105 victory over the Houston Rockets; the team they're about to face in the opening round of the Playoffs. A hush fell over what had been a jubilant crowd at the Target Center, as Rubio grimmaced in pain on the floor. Even after the victory, they remained subdued, correctly fearing the worst.

The Timberwolves made a stunning Cinderella run to the NBA Finals in 2016 despite Rubio battling injuries for much of the regular season and Playoffs, where they fell to the Philadelphia 76ers in four games. Since then, Rubio has become an All-Star, and was instrumental in their rise to the top of the Western Conference this year, averaging 13.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 9.1 apg, and 2.2 spg, while shooting a career-best 43% from downtown. He also set new single game career highs with 27 points and 20 assists.

"We're trying to stay positive," Timberwolves co-captain Kevin Love told reporters. "Obviously, we want Ricky out there with us. He's our maestro, after all. But we can't give up. A couple of years ago, we did the unthinkable. We're going to give it our all."

In addition to being ruled out for the remainder of the 2018 season, Rubio is expected to miss a significant portion of next season. Primary playmaking duties will likely fall to rookie Todd Walls, a combo guard who also spent time running the point at Kentucky last year. Veteran shooting guard Kevin Martin is also expected to move into the starting lineup alongside Walls.

2018 Playoffs Filled With Intriguing Subplots

Image

The 2018 regular season is in the books, and the postseason is upon us! A couple of seeds weren't decided until the final night, with the defending champion Philadelphia 76ers crushing the New York Knicks' Playoff hopes in their regular season finale. The first round matchups are as follows:

EAST

Philadelphia 76ers (1) vs Orlando Magic (8)
Detroit Pistons (4) vs Cleveland Cavaliers (5)
Milwaukee Bucks (3) vs Indiana Pacers (6)
Washington Wizards (2) vs Chicago Bulls (7)

WEST

Minnesota Timberwolves (1) vs Houston Rockets (8)
New Orleans Pelicans (4) vs Golden State Warriors (5)
Portland Trail Blazers (3) vs San Antonio Spurs (6)
Los Angeles Clippers (2) vs Sacramento Kings (7)

As the Playoffs get underway, there are several stories to keep an eye on...

Image

The Philadelphia 76ers are primed to make a run at their fifth-consecutive championship. Despite being without Terry Hanson for most of the year, and Carmelo Anthony for long stretches as well, they once again went 81-1 in the regular season. Andrew Begley was again spectacular, leading the league in all five major categories on route to his fifth Most Valuable Player award. The 76ers are heavy favourites, but nothing is guaranteed, and there are questions about their future. Melo has made it clear that he intends to explore free agency, and seems unlikely to return. Having already won rings with the 76ers, Melo appears to be interested in a role as the top option again, and likely one last big payday. Whatever happens in the Drive for Five, we could be seeing a different Philadelphia team next year.

After making it to the Finals in 2014, the Portland Trail Blazers have since developed a reputation for choking in the first round. They'll be looking to end that streak this year, but will have to overcome a much-improved San Antonio Spurs team. The Spurs bottomed out following Tim Duncan's retirement, but have bounced back this year after adding James Harden and Tristan Thompson in the offseason. Several pundits have picked them as the most likely team to make an underdog run, something the Blazers obviously hope to prevent.

Golden State are back in the Playoffs, thanks to the stellar play of Steph Curry and Rookie of the Year Lonny Fowlkes. Klay Thompson has adjusted to his bench role admirably, and remains a threat whenever he's in the game. The Warriors' clash with the defending Western Conference champion Pelicans could be one of the most exciting first round matchups, with Jrue Holiday and Anthony Davis leading the way for New Orleans.

Speaking of former Western champs, despite being the top seed, the Minnesota Timberwolves will need to recapture the underdog energy that led them all the way to the 2016 NBA Finals after losing Ricky Rubio to injury in the final game of the regular season; coincidentally against their first round opponent, the Houston Rockets. Jeremy Lin and Dwight Howard carried the Rockets to a respectable 42-40 record following the departure of James Harden this past offseason, while Evan Turner has championship experience from his days with the 76ers. Minnesota is still favoured, but might find themselves in a battle if they can't finish the series quickly.

For the second year in a row, the Detroit Pistons enter the postseason as the fourth seed in the East, with the honour of being the only team to defeat the Philadelphia 76ers during the regular season. Jackson Ellis remains the star in Motown, and could be on a collision course with A-Train in the second round once again. He'll need to outplay Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers to get there, though.

The Milwaukee Bucks have the best backcourt in the league in Tracy Brock and Pat Clemons, but the Indiana Pacers have a great duo of their own in Paul George and Malik Garrett. Milwaukee has given the 76ers problems at times, which may lead to an epic Eastern Conference Finals showdown if both teams get through. The Los Angeles Clippers have been one of the best teams in the West the past few seasons, only to flame out in the Playoffs. They're entering the postseason relatively healthy though, which bodes well for their chances...at least for getting by the Sacramento Kings in the first round.

Washington has very quietly had a fine season, despite losing dynamic backup point guard Elden Jennings for the year. The Wizards face a Chicago Bulls teams that has had a disappointing season, after years as a legitimate contender. Injuries haven't helped the team from the Windy City, though many fans have been grumbling that the team re-signed Derrick Rose rather than making a serious bid for A-Train, given the reigning MVP's apparent interest in joining them.

We could be due to a big shake-up in the offseason, from the defending champions right down to the last-placed Oklahoma City Thunder. Before that though, we can expect some fantastic basketball to be played in the 2018 postseason! Will the 76ers complete their Drive for Five, or will a new champion stand tall when it's all said and done? Get ready for an exciting two months of NBA action!

Magic Hand 76ers Second Loss Of Season, Trail 2-1

Image

Image

ORLANDO, FL -- The Orlando Magic became just the second team to defeat the Philadelphia 76ers in the past two seasons, and the first team to hand them a Playoff loss since the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2014 NBA Finals. Led by the championship experience of Dwyane Wade, and the hot shooting of Jimmy Perkinson and Victor Oladipo, the eighth-seeded Magic triumphed 115-110 over the defending champions in Game 3.

Unfazed by the 76ers' five point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Magic began a run in the second quarter that set the tone for the rest of the game. They led by two at halftime, and continued their momentum throughout the second half, leading by as many as twelve late in the fourth. A furious rally by the 76ers closed the gap in the waning minutes, but the champs were unable to storm back to claim victory as they've previously done on several occasions this season.

Wade finished with 18 points to go along with 13 assists and five steals. Oladipo led the way with 24 points and added six assists, while Perkinson had 21 points on a blistering 10-for-12 shooting, as well as a team high seven rebounds. Tobias Harris also scored in double figures for the Magic with 18 points.

Carmelo Anthony, the leading scorer so far in the Playoffs, hit his average with 36 points and had nine rebounds, but failed to tally an assist. Five-time MVP Andrew Begley scored 29 for the 76ers, but had an unusually tough night shooting the ball, going 12-for-27. He also had 15 assists, eight rebounds, and seven steals, but turned the ball over 11 times. Nerlens Noel was the only other 76er to fill the stat sheet, with 24 points and eight rebounds.

"We didn't match their energy at all," A-Train said after the game. "Their confidence was high going into the second half, and we never got out of first gear. I made some bad decisions with the ball, sloppy turnovers. I have to be better than that." A-Train, who is averaging 4.6 fouls per game compared to just two during the regular season, brushed off questions about the officiating. "I'm not going to blame anything on (the foul calls). A couple more buckets, a few less turnovers, and we could be up 3-0 now."

Regular starter Michael Carter-Williams played just seven minutes off the bench for the 76ers, after tweaking his ankle in Game 2. He's currently listed as day-to-day, with Tony Wroten stepping into the starting lineup in his place. Game 4 will take place in Orlando on Wednesday.

Melo Out, Man
By Skip T. Grind

Image
All signs point to Melo leaving Philadelphia

Carmelo Anthony is making an estimated $21.8 million to play for the defending champion Philadelphia 76ers this year. He's won three rings with the team, and has an excellent opportunity to win a fourth. He's leading all players in scoring so far in the Playoffs, putting up 36.3 ppg. And yet, he keeps takling about how he'll be testing the waters of free agency this offseason.

What is wrong with this man?

Don't get me wrong. In a profession where players are sent all over the country with a single phone call, no one can begrudge Anthony for looking out for number one. Loyalty should be a two way street, and so many teams - and fans - expect players to pledge fealty to their club without it being reciprocated. On top of that, Anthony has been an All-Star for the 76ers, playing a significant role in their title runs. He's within his rights to seek other opportunities as a free agent.

But this constant talk of how he's going to explore free agency before the season has ended, indeed in the thick of the Playoffs? Really, Melo? Really?!?

Anthony's impending free agency and his apparent dissatisfaction have been a distraction all season long. It's incredible that it hasn't had more of an impact on the team's success so far; a testament to how the whole roster has rallied around their Drive for Five despite being plagued by injuries, to say nothing of yet another spectacular season from Andrew Begley.

Speaking of A-Train, he's tried to keep the peace. He's talked about Melo's importance to the team, how much they all want him to be a part of the dynasty they're establishing. Unfortunately, it's looking likely that Melo won't mellow out, and so it'll be a case of Melo Out come July.

In case you're wondering where the rift began, Anthony's uneasiness in Philadelphia reportedly began last season, a campaign he missed all but five games of after suffering a torn MCL in 2016. The team's success without him, and the emergence of Terry Hanson as a star, is said to have severely bruised his ego. Not even being the second option on a championship-winning team as Hanson was sidelined for the 2017 Playoffs could soothe those hurt feelings.

And so, here we are. It's been speculated that A-Train has been taking a back seat to Anthony on offense so far in the Playoffs, setting him up as the team's top scorer in the hopes that he'll change his mind about leaving. Following a shocking 115-110 loss to the Orlando Magic in Game 3, and given Melo's continued grumbling and talk of free agency, it wouldn't surprise anyone if A-Train starts waving him off and looking for his own shot more often. The team certainly looked better when he was racking up 50-point games back in February.

As much as the 76ers deny there are problems - and Melo himself has been backtracking and downplaying his remarks when pressed for further comment - it seems inevitable that a split is coming. There could be other changes to the roster as well, though A-Train, Hanson, Michael Carter-Williams, and Nerlens Noel seem locks to stay; at least for now. Even if they are in shape to contend for a possible sixth championship next season, Melo probably won't be a part of that team.

Of course, they have to win their fifth first, and distractions like Carmelo Anthony openly discussing free agency plans won't help. Melo has every right to keep his options open, leave if he wishes, and of course, speak his mind. It would behoove him to be a professional though, and right now, he's anything but that. If I'm a coach or player on the 76ers right now, I'm pulling him aside and telling Melo to mellow out, man!

2018 First Round Recap

Image

The defending champion Philadelphia 76ers are moving on to the second round. While that isn't exactly surprising, the Orlando Magic stealing Game 3 to avoid a sweep certainly caught everyone off guard! The champs proceeded to take care of business in Games 4 and 5 though, cruising to victory. They once again find themselves facing Detroit in the second round, after the Pistons swept the Cleveland Cavaliers. It should be another exciting chapter in the rivalry between Andrew Begley and Jackson Ellis.

Derrick Rose's injuries contributed to an underwhelming regular season for the Chicago Bulls, but they appear to be in good form come the postseason, as they upset the second-seeded Washington Wizards in seven games. The duo of Rose and Jimmy Butler will have their hands full with the Bucks' backcourt tandem of Tracy Brock and Pat Clemons, after Milwaukee prevailed against the Indiana Pacers in a series that also went the distance.

Unfortunately for the Minnesota Timberwolves, the top seed in the West struggled with Ricky Rubio sidelined indefinitely with a torn MCL. The eighth-seeded Houston Rockets stormed to a 4-1 series upset, led by Jeremy Lin and Dwight Howard. They'll be squaring off with last year's Western Conference Champions, the New Orleans Pelicans. Anthony Davis has had a strong postseason so far, leading all players in blocks and rebounds. The showdown between Davis and Howard inside promises to be an entertaining one.

Portland finally broke their first round curse, downing the new-look San Antonio Spurs in five games. The Los Angeles Clippers also avoided first round disappointment as they dispensed with the Sacramento Kings in six games, setting up a clash between two teams that have fallen short of expectations in recent years. It'll also see a battle of elite point guards, as the Blazers' Damian Lillard goes head-to-head with the architect of Lob City, Chris Paul.

While the Philadelphia 76ers remain the favourites to complete their Drive for Five, nothing is guaranteed until the final buzzer, and there's plenty of intrigue as the second round gets underway!

2018 Second Round Recap

Image

We're just two rounds away from crowning the 2018 NBA Champions, but that leaves plenty more basketball left to be played! Andrew Begley and the defending champion Philadelphia 76ers swept Jackson Ellis and their rival Detroit Pistons in the second round, closing out the series with a hard-fought victory in which Carmelo Anthony led all scorers with 40 points. Unfortunately for the 76ers, they lost Tony Wroten for the rest of the postseason with a severe ankle sprain, while Thaddeus Young's court time has been limited by back spasms.

They'll face a familiar foe in the Chicago Bulls. The seventh seed in the East has been the Cinderella story of the Conference, toppling the Washington Wizards in the first round in a seven game series, and defeating the Milwaukee Bucks 4-2 in the second round to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals once again. They'll be without Carlos Boozer however, as the power forward joined the ranks of players who have suffered a season-ending knee injury this year. The Eastern Conference Finals may come down to a war of attrition, not to mention a showdown of superstar point guards.

Out West, the Portland Trail Blazers outlasted the Los Angeles Clippers, taking the series in seven to advance to the Conference Finals for the first time since 2014. After years of first round disappointment, it appears that the Blazers have what it takes to make a serious run at the NBA Finals, where they may well have a rematch with the Philadelphia 76ers. The Blazers were the last team to hand the 76ers a Playoff loss until the Orlando Magic took a game from them in the first round this year.

Speaking of rematches, last year's Western Conference Champions, the New Orleans Pelicans, would surely love to have another shot at the 76ers as well. Anthony Davis continues to be a force in the paint for the Pelicans, while Jrue Holiday has been one of the premier playmakers this postseason. They didn't have too much trouble with the Houston Rockets in the second round, defeating them in five games. The stage seems to have been set for another clash that goes the distance, with the third-seeded Trail Blazers holding homecourt advantage.

Four teams sit just eight wins away from a championship. Will the 76ers complete their Drive for Five, or will the Trail Blazers or Pelicans get their revenge? Will the Chicago Bulls finally sit atop the NBA again for the first time in twenty years? We won't have to wait too long to find out!

2018 Conference Finals Recap & NBA Finals Preview

Image

The Philadelphia 76ers are another step closer to completing their Drive for Five after sweeping the Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals. However, to defend their crown, they'll need to overcome a familiar foe in the Portland Trail Blazers. The Blazers, the 76ers' NBA Finals opponent in 2014, triumphed over last year's Western Conference Champion New Orleans Pelicans in six games.

Although the defending champions bested Chicago in four games, the underdog Bulls made the 76ers earn the series victory. The first three games saw hard-fought battles, with Game 2 going into overtime following a furious fourth quarter rally by the Bulls. Jimmy Butler played some impressive defense on scoring champion and reigning MVP Andrew Begley, making him earn every bucket while also forcing the assists leader into a number of turnovers. At the other end, he formed a lethal one-two punch with Derrick Rose that had the 76ers' defense reeling on several possessions.

Since their Cinderella run to the NBA Finals in 2014, where they lost to the 76ers in five games, the Trail Blazers have produced a string of first round follies. Nevertheless, Damian Lillard and company entered this year's Playoffs confident that they'd shake off previous disappointments, and make a deep run. After outlasting the Los Angeles Clippers - another team that has underperformed in recent postseasons - Portland trailed New Orleans 2-1 after Game 3 of the Conference Finals. After a narrow victory in Game 4, they won Game 5 in a blowout before sealing the series on the road in Game 6.

Portland's ability to win on the road, which helped them down the Clippers and Pelicans, will be put to the test against the 76ers. They'll also be at a disadvantage with C.J. McCollum battling tendonitis in his knee, which has limited him to sparse, unproductive minutes since Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals. It didn't prevent the Blazers from taking care of business despite strong play from Tyreke Evans, Jrue Holiday, and Anthony Davis, though the 76ers are obviously a superior opponent.

Philadelphia are battling their own injury woes, however. Both Terry Hanson and Trevor Booker went down with season-ending injuries before November was over, and Tony Wroten was ruled out for the remainder of the Playoffs with a severe ankle sprain, sustained in Game 3 of the 76ers' second round series with the Detroit Pistons. Thaddeus Young has also been hampered by injuries at times this year, and after four straight Finals appearances and championships, Philadelphia are clearly feeling fatigued. Even as the favourites, they appear more vulnerable than they have in a long time.

The rematch between the Sixers and Blazers - their third NBA Finals meeting - is sure to be an exciting battle at point guard, with A-Train taking on Dame. As for the other Conference Finalists, both the Bulls and Pelicans acquitted themselves well during their respective series. Though some Bulls fans may still wish the team had managed to swap D-Rose for A-Train in the offseason, it's clear that their regular season record was the result of unfortunate injuries, not a lack of talent or drive. Both teams appear to have a bright future if they remain healthy.

As for the two teams left standing, we're a minimum of four games away from seeing the 76ers cement their dynasty of the 2010s, or the Trail Blazers avenging their 2014 loss and winning their first title since the 70s. As far as historical significance and subplots are concerned, not even Hollywood nor professional wrestling could've scripted it better. The stage has been set for an entertaining finish to the NBA's 72nd season.

76ers Edge Trail Blazers 137-134 in Game 4 to Clinch Fifth Consecutive Title

Image

PORTLAND, OR -- The Philadelphia 76ers completed a sweep of the Portland Trail Blazers to win their fifth consecutive championship, but the title-clinching victory didn't come easy. The game wouldn't be decided until the final buzzer, when a desperation heave by C.J. McCollum bricked off the backboard and allowed the 76ers to narrowly escape with a 137-134 victory.

Five-time Finals MVP Andrew Begley shone in the victory, scoring 24 of his 52 points in the fourth quarter including four free throws to extend the lead in the waning seconds. However, it was Brandon Rush who put the team ahead for good, scooping up an errant pass from Thaddeus Young and finishing at the rim with a tough layup that gave Philadelphia a 133-131 lead. Following two free throws by A-Train, the Defensive Player of the Year made an error that led to a three by Damian Lillard, bringing Portland within one. Dame then fouled out to put A-Train on the line one last time, leading to McCollum's last second fling with the Blazers out of timeouts.

Despite being swept and losing the first three games by double digits, the Trail Blazers proved to be a challenging opponent for the 76ers. The scores remained close for much of the first three games, before furious runs allowed the 76ers to secure comfortable victories. Lillard was spectacular throughout the series, more than holding his own against A-Train as he matched the MVP's efforts in racking up points and assists. Wesley Matthews also stepped up with McCollum missing the first two games, helping the Blazers to remain competitive with his hot shooting from downtown. Meanwhile, Carmelo Anthony and Nerlens Noel were major contributors for the 76ers, with Melo scoring at will and Noel controlling the glass.

The star of the show once again was A-Train however, as he capped off another impressive season. After averaging a triple-double for the fourth consecutive season, he fell just short of the mark in this year's Playoffs, but still posted eye-popping numbers across the board with 35 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 15.9 apg, 6.6 spg, and 1.8 bpg. Despite the 76ers' impressive record this year - 81-1 in the regular season, and 16-1 in the postseason - A-Train described it as his toughest NBA campaign yet.

"There was a lot of pressure on us heading into this season, and a lot of bumps along the way," the newly-crowned five-time champion remarked after Game 4. "To lose Terry and Trevor early on, then have Melo and Thaddeus miss some time and play through injury...well, we're all a bit banged up, and we haven't had much rest these past five seasons. No regrets, though. I'm proud of this team and what we've accomplished. This is a special group. And yeah, I'm going to say it: we're not done yet!"

With title number five of the decade, the Philadelphia 76ers have undoubtedly cemented their status as an NBA dynasty. Their eight championships also place them third overall in league history, behind only the Boston Celtics (17) and Los Angeles Lakers (16). Only the Celtics have managed to win at least five titles in a row, when Bill Russell led the team to eight consecutive championships from 1959 to 1966.

Although A-Train and the 76ers are clearly eyeing another title run next season, there are several questions that need to be answered this offseason, from Carmelo Anthony's free agency to Terry Hanson's health and future role. Nevertheless, it seems as long as A-Train is leading the way, the reigning MVP will do his best to keep the team in the hunt for more gold.

Carmelo Anthony Re-Signs With 76ers; Bradley Beal to the Lakers

Image

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- If there was one stain on the Philadelphia 76ers' Drive for Five this past season, it was the looming shadow of Carmelo Anthony's free agency. Melo repeatedly stated a preference to explore his options, and most NBA insiders expected him to walk in search of a bigger role as he enters the twilight of his career.

However, Anthony - who signed with Philadelphia in 2014 and has now been part of four championship teams - elected to remain in the City of Brotherly Love, signing a one year deal reportedly worth $15 million. It would appear that being the third leading scorer during last year's postseason, and the prospect of contending for another ring, outweighed Melo's dissatisfaction and desire to move on. According to reports, Melo's morale dipped significantly when he missed most of the 2017 campaign with a knee injury, during which the 76ers set a new record for regular season wins despite his absence.

Melo's return also raises questions about Terry Hanson's future in Philadelphia. Coach Johnny Davis has preferred to run a dual point guard backcourt with Michael Carter-Williams and reigning Finals MVP Andrew Begley, which has relegated Hanson to the bench with Anthony and Thaddeus Young starting at the forward spots. Considering Hanson's close relationship with A-Train, his impending free agency, and Melo possibly only sticking around for one more season, the 76ers would be wise to handle the situation carefully. A-Train has been nothing but professional to date, but there are rumours that he's been frustrated with Davis' rotations and gameplan at times, especially when it's forced him to play hero ball.

Elsewhere, the Los Angeles Lakers have lured Bradley Beal away from the Washington Wizards. With the retirement of Kobe Bryant, the Lakers entered the offseason eager to add a star player on the wing. Obviously, asking Beal to fill the shoes of a soon-to-be Hall of Famer isn't a fair request, but his scoring acumen and in particular his outside shooting should be a great fit with LeBron James. The past four seasons have been disappointing for the Lakers, who expected much greater things after pairing up LeBron with Kobe. Acquiring Beal is a positive step as they look to re-tool after missing the Playoffs last season.

In other offseason news, the Minnesota Timberwolves shored up their front court with the additions of JaVale McGee and Paul Millsap. Dwyane Wade elected to remain in Florida, re-signing with the Orlando Magic following a season in which they were one of only two teams to defeat the champion Philadelphia 76ers. Amar'e Stoudemire, who had been considering retirement, instead opted to re-sign with the Sacramento Kings. Elsewhere, the Cleveland Cavaliers signed Jeff Green, while former 76er Royce White joined the Miami Heat.

With a couple of revamped teams, the 76ers seeking a sixth consecutive title, and an influx of new talent in this year's Draft, the stage is set for another memorable season in 2019!

Terry Hanson Back in Action, Signs Extension

Image

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- After missing almost the entire 2018 season with a torn MCL, Philadelphia 76ers swingman Terry Hanson is back on the court. On top of that, he's expected to be suiting up for the Sixers for the foreseeable future.

Although the one-time All-Star finds himself in a bench role as he did prior to his devastating injury last season, both he and the team clearly feel he's a part of their long-term plans, as he inked a three-year extension believed to be worth $19 million. With Carmelo Anthony re-signing for one year in the offseason, it would appear that Hanson is slated to be his eventual permanent replacement at small forward, especially with coach Johnny Davis favouring a dual point guard backcourt of reigning MVP Andrew Begley and Michael Carter-Williams.

Despite the 76ers' hesitation to rush Hanson back into a larger role, it's clear they value his talent and potential for further development. Keeping Hanson is also a no-brainer given his friendship with A-Train. Sources have been reporting that if Philadelphia had let Hanson walk at the end of his rookie contract, there was a high chance that A-Train would be looking to leave the City of Brotherly Love as soon as possible, even if it meant demanding a trade. Signing him to an extension will no doubt go a long way in appeasing their star point guard, who has been privately frustrated with some of the team's moves despite another successful season.

Hanson played just 13 minutes in Philadelphia's season opener, but scored 13 points including a spectacular reverse dunk on the break off a lob from A-Train. The 76ers decimated the Atlanta Hawks 151-87 to begin their 2019 campaign, a season in which they'll attempt to become the first team since Bill Russell's Boston Celtics to win six championships in a row. A-Train posted another monster triple-double in the victory, tallying 22 points, 18 rebounds, and 19 assists, while falling just short of a quadruple-double with nine steals.

Philadelphia 76ers Soaring Early On
By Skip T. Grind

Image
Terry Hanson has embraced his current role with the Philadelphia 76ers

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- It's clear that the Philadelphia 76ers aren't content with their successful Drive for Five last year, as the defending champions have soared out to a 17-0 start to tip off the 2019 campaign. Their form isn't altogether surprising given their dominance for half a decade now, yet they are raising eyebrows around the league, and for good reason.

Carmelo Anthony, who surprised many insiders when he opted to re-sign with the 76ers for one year in the offseason, has only played in six games. His 26.2 ppg leads the entire team however, ahead of Andrew Begley and Terry Hanson. Of course, Hanson is right behind him with 25.6 ppg, stepping into the starting lineup while Melo has battled knee and ankle problems. For his part, Hanson has seemed unfazed by his bench role, which he found himself in for the first time in his career last year after coach Johnny Davis opted to start Michael Carter-Williams ahead of him.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the play of A-Train. While the reigning MVP garnered Player of the Month honours yet again in November, his statistical output has fallen short of previous seasons. At 25.4 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 15.1 apg, 6.6 spg, and 2.6 bpg, his numbers are obviously still world class. At the same time, his scoring has come back to earth after averaging 42.4 ppg last year. His rebounding and assist averages are also the lowest they've been since his rookie year, and after an astonishing run of leading the league in all five major categories, he's only topping the NBA in assists and steals thus far.

Mind you, it's only because of the high bar that he's set that fans and pundits are taking notice. A-Train continues to make the right plays as he helms Philadelphia as its captain and undisputed leader on the court. With Melo and Hanson in fine form offensively, he doesn't have to carry as much of the load as he did last season. Indeed, he generally spends the first halves of games getting everyone involved, picking his spots to score as the night progresses.

When asked about the change in his game this year, A-Train indicated that he feels quite comfortable with how things are right now. "Winning above all," he told reporters after the 76ers handed the New Orleans Pelicans a 118-98 loss. "Like everyone else on the team, I'm just doing the things that help us come out on top at the end of the game, night in, night out. I'm not going to put any personal statistical goals ahead of the team." When asked if he's concerned about falling short of a triple-double average for the first time since his rookie season, A-Train shook his head. "It's not important. I've done that, and I'm proud of it. But stats are more impressive when they lead to wins, and when they come within the flow of the game."

Still, some are questioning whether A-Train is fully rested and playing at 100% capacity. Although he's only 28 and in his fifth season, five straight championship runs have seen him play a lot of basketball since he entered the league, without much of a break. With Hanson out most of last year, and Melo also missing long stretches of games, the 76ers called upon A-Train for some massive scoring nights and to get the most out of a depleted roster. There's talk that he's looking to save his legs, if indeed he's completely refreshed after capping off another championship season back in June.

A-Train has been brushing off those suggestions. When asked about whether he's happy about Hanson's extension however, he's been far more enthusiastic. "I'm ecstatic that Terry and the front office were able to come to terms," A-Train told reporters two weeks ago. "Terry's had some bad luck with injuries as we're all painfully aware - no pun intended - but we all know what he's capable of. He's the future of this team." Considering that the 76ers re-signed him to a three year deal, it certainly appears that they agree, perhaps anticipating that Melo will be finally moving on or retiring at the end of this season.

While Melo's performance so far this year is proof that he's still a starter and potential All-Star in the league, the way Hanson has racked up buckets shows that he's at the same level. Even as the 76ers race out to another impressive start, many around the league remain bewildered by Coach Davis' continued insistence on starting Carter-Williams alongside A-Train in the backcourt. MCW had the best year of his career last season and is in similar form so far this year, but everyone seemingly agrees that Hanson should be the one getting the starting nod.

On the bright side, Philadelphia's eagerness to extend Hanson's contract has quelled rumours that A-Train might be re-thinking his commitment to the team. For the last couple of years, much has been written about how A-Train's future in Philadelphia is tied to Top Floor Terry. 76ers fans should be able to rest easy, knowing that the dynamic duo won't be going anywhere, at least for the next three years. In the meantime, the club has one goal in mind: a sixth-consecutive trip to the NBA Finals, and another Larry O'Brien Trophy. We may only be a month into the season, but right now, it seems highly inadvisable to bet against them.

A-Train Has Monster Quadruple-Double in Rout of Kings

Image
LeRoy Carter is put on a poster early in the first quarter

SACRAMENTO, CA -- Despite the Philadelphia 76ers' dominance through the first two months of the 2019 season, much of the talk has surrounded the dip in Andrew Begley's numbers. Some pundits have suggested the All-Star guard is showing signs of fatigue after five consecutive NBA Championships, with some going so far as to predict that these deep Playoff runs will ultimately and unfortunately derail A-Train's career in the long run.

That must be news to A-Train himself. The five-time Most Valuable Player had a game for the ages, tallying 38 points, 18 rebounds, 20 assists, three blocks, and a new NBA-record 21 steals in the 76ers' 133-70 blowout of the Sacramento Kings. A-Train also shot 17-for-23, including 4-for-7 from downtown in the victory. Michael Carter-Williams scored 17 points and had five assists, while Terry Hanson contributed 15 points and four rebounds off the bench. The Kings' rising star Leroy Carter struggled in the loss with 10 points on 3-for-10 shooting, and found himself on the end of one of A-Train's signature poster dunks early in the first quarter.

Sacramento scored the first four points of the game, but trailed by nine at the end of the first quarter, a deficit that ballooned to 17 by the half. Their offense completely stagnated in the second half as they scored just 32 points, unable to contend with Philadelphia's swarming defense. The defending champions easily ran away with the game, even drawing cheers from Kings fans as they connected on a number of alley-oops. "That was demoralising, for sure," Carter admitted after the game. "When your own fans start cheering your opponents' highlights, you know you've let them down."

A-Train insisted that his big night wasn't about making a statement, reiterating that he's simply doing what's needed of him as the 76ers roll towards an undefeated start through December. Still, it's difficult to imagine that nights like this one aren't a response to the speculation about his health and future. Sources close to the 76ers claim that while A-Train is far from unhappy with his role and numbers this season, he still finds the talk insulting. "He's still going out there and being the best player in the league, yet people are trying to paint him as being washed because he's not setting records every night. It's ridiculous," one source commented.

Nevertheless, A-Train remains diplomatic in his public remarks. "The only numbers I'm paying attention to are our score, and our opponents' score. Being ahead when the final buzzer goes, that's all I care about." The 76ers have finished 81-1 the past two seasons, which along with their five titles, has cemented them as one of the most dominant dynasties in league history. However, coming so close to a perfect season and falling short on two occasions has left the team with plenty of motivation to make history. "We're extremely proud of everything we've accomplished," A-Train said. "But to become the first undefeated team in NBA history...yeah, that would be special. At the end of the day it's about the rings, but we hate to lose any game, and going 82-0 would really be something."

With performances like their win over the Kings, the 76ers are in good shape to make 2019 another historic campaign.

Carmelo Anthony Out 2-4 Weeks With Ankle Injury

Image
Melo once again finds himself sidelined this season

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Carmelo Anthony is set to miss more time this season, as the sixteen-year pro and ten-time All-Star suffered a high ankle sprain in the Philadelphia 76ers' 110-98 victory over the Orlando Magic.

Melo played 16 minutes and scored 12 points in the first half as Philadelphia played host to Orlando. After making a hard drive that ended with a turnaround fadeaway, an unfortunate landing left Anthony writhing in pain and clutching his ankle. He was helped off the floor by teammates Andrew Begley and Allen Wall, receiving a supportive ovation from the hometown crowd.

Terry Hanson, who is expected to start in Melo's place moving forward, stepped in to score 14 points in 14 minutes off the bench. Many fans expected Hanson to be Melo's permanent replacement this season, as the four-time champion with the 76ers was seemingly at odds with management and ready to leave last offseason. Instead, he re-signed on a one-year deal, with both sides reportedly discussing the possibility of a longer contract this coming offseason.

For now though, Melo - who tweaked his knee earlier this season - will be rehabbing another injury, with his sights set on returning in 2-4 weeks. With a fresh Terry Hanson ready to make the most of his opportunity to start, the 76ers are quite likely to keep rolling as they remain undefeated in the 2019 season. However, as they eye the prospect of a sixth consecutive championship, they'll undoubtedly want a healthy Carmelo Anthony in order to be firing on all cylinders come Playoff time.

Terry Hanson Steps Back Into Starting Five, 76ers Down Hawks 125-113 for 39th Consecutive Victory

Image
Hanson and the 76ers remain undefeated midway through January

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Two nights ago against the Orlando Magic, playing extended minutes after Carmelo Anthony went down with a high ankle sprain, Terry Hanson knocked down a long three-pointer as the halftime buzzer sounded. He thumped his chest, smiling broadly as 76ers fans showered him with cheers. Never a doubt.

Hanson's bench role - an ongoing controversy in Philadelphia despite the team's success - clearly hasn't shaken his confidence. Stepping into the starting lineup in the wake of an injury to Melo for the second time this season, Hanson exploded for 42 points to go along with three rebounds and six assists, leading the 76ers to their 39th consecutive victory to begin the 2019 season. Nerlens Noel also had a huge night with 28 points and 15 rebounds, while reigning MVP Andrew Begley had an unusually quiet game, handing out 11 assists and scoring 18 points while taking only nine field goal attempts.

Of course, that may have been by design. It's no secret that A-Train remains frustrated by Hanson's benching, and he was clearly looking for his favourite teammate from the opening tip. With Melo set to miss 2-4 weeks after injuring his ankle, Hanson will have ample time to shine...and perhaps, make a run at the league's Sixth Man award, assuming he doesn't end up starting in too many games to qualify. If nothing else, nights like this one - and the 76ers' continued dominance - might earn "Top Floor Terry" his second All-Star nod.

Although the 76ers came out on top, the Atlanta Hawks were hardly pushovers. The Hawks have proven themselves worthy competitors to the 76ers despite their general dominance of the league these past five years, even stealing a victory to prevent them from breaking the Chicago Bulls' old mark of 72-10 in the final game of the 2015 season. Since then, the 76ers have shattered that record, including back-to-back 81-1 campaigns. Despite spirited runs from the Hawks tonight, the 76ers still pulled away for a double digit victory, as they continue to march towards what they hope will be the first undefeated season in league history.

Unfortunately, veteran forward Thaddeus Young left the game after taking a nasty fall and suffering a concussion. He's expected to miss up to a month as a precaution, with Trevor Booker likely replacing him in the starting lineup. He joins Melo and rookie Darrel Stewart - ruled out for the season with a torn MCL - on the injured list for Philadelphia. Young is averaging 6.6 ppg and 4.9 rpg for the 76ers this season.

Two-time All-Star Dedric Bonner led the Hawks with 29 points in the loss, while reigning Sixth Man of the Year Tracy Wright scored 20. Similar to Hanson, Wright has been promoted to the starting five after veteran guard Lou Williams broke his arm on January 5th. Fifth-year Hawk Taribo Enyeama scored 18 points, two of which came on a vicious poster dunk on Young.

However, the night ultimately belonged to Hanson and the 76ers. With their current form, and A-Train's enthusiasm for playing alongside him, Hanson's big night and another victory for the 76ers would appear to be a sign of things to come as they continue their quest for another ring.

Some "out of character" reflections on being in my sixth season of NBA 2K14 MyCAREER.

Monday Tip-Off: Half a Decade in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER

It’s wild that my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER is now in Year 6. That would’ve been unthinkable just a few years ago, as it took me a long time to warm up to the game! On top of that, I began a proper playthrough of the mode for a Wayback Wednesday feature posted in August of 2021, and by October that year, I’d decided that finishing my rookie season would be a good way to say goodbye to MyCAREER; at least for the moment. Three years later, I’m not only still playing that game, but I’ve finished four more full seasons on top of that!

There’s no doubt that it’s become one of my all-time favourite basketball gaming experiences. NBA 2K14 still holds up superbly on the sticks, and while MyCAREER is missing a few key features that I’ve enjoyed in later iterations of the mode, I also appreciate its simplicity and focus on the NBA. As far as the journey itself, I’ve been impressed by how each season has held my attention and provided its own subplots, even though the cutscene-driven story basically concluded after my rookie year. It’s been fascinating to see how the league has changed, and also, how some things have stayed the same. As I’m sure you can tell from my recaps, it’s been a fun half decade.
