Chapter 1: THE KID WHO DROPPED 50

Image

On a quiet night in March, there was a battle going on. A battle no one man could have predicted, was taking place.
This battle did not take place on the battle field. Still this was a battle of blood, sweat, and tears. A fight for the
ages was happening as the nation watched. The eyes of millions were in disbelief.

It was a freshman... In the first round of the NCAA tournament, on a team that barely made it into the tournament, it was a freshman.
Shot after shot was falling. The crowd was in a craze. Social media was abuzz. An unknown, bearded, 6'4 kid
from Canada was making his mark. He was bringing Butler University back to glory. His name was Kevin Parker.
and he had 48 points with 4 seconds left in overtime and the game on the line. Butler trailed the Florida Gators 79- 76.

At this moment the crowd quieted as Butler in-bounded the ball from half court. There he was, in the perfect March Madness moment,
coming off a screen to catch the ball behind the 3 point line. He caught the ball but double teamed by Florida's lengthy guards, he made a
move to give him self some space. He left his feet and with 0.3 seconds left the basketball rolled off his finger tips as all eyes awaited the outcome.

SWISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And for a moment he was the guy that had put on a 51 point performance to knock out the powerhouse Gators. Kevin Parker single handedly
brought Butler back to relevance and they were on their way to make a run through the remainder of the tourney.

.... The basketball gods would not allow such a night to end in such a glorious outcome. The refs waved off the 3 pointer and said his foot was on the line.
Butler fans were going nuts over what they were witnessing. After further review... his foot was on the line.

Kevin Parker, the kid who dropped 50... but not 51. Butler University lost 79-78.

An amazing moment in college basketball. The best part of it all was the kid who scored 50 would return for a sophomore season. This time around all eyes would be focused on Kevin Parker.

Chapter 2: GAME WITHIN A GAME

Image

Most fans never realize what is at stake for those involved in the game. With large profits for the NCAA, the arena of big time college sports is no laughing matter. At big time programs successful coaches get big contracts and notoriety while other coaches are always watching their backs. The players have so much to lose and only a few have much to gain. Then you have the people who prey on the player's potential such as the Agents, AAU Coaches, "Friends" of the family or college program, etc. Each one of these characters hoping to cash in big when a players declares to go pro. The one and done players are the cream of the crop that every coach hopes to land in the recruiting game. The "one and done" players a few and far in between.

The big time schools have large recruiting budgets, while the smaller programs fight to compete for recruits every year.
Athletic scholarships are not offered at all schools. Most schools only give out partial scholarships, something a recruit has to consider when selecting a school of his choice. Another consideration that many never take in to account is that these scholarships are offered up on a year to year basis.
There are no 4 year athletic scholarships. The student has to fight to keep his scholarship each year.

There are other things to consider also. Should college sports pay it's athletes, are the athletes really "student-athletes", should coaches be allowed to make millions, and what about those large TV contracts worth billions of dollars?

These are all things that are part of landscape of D-1 college basketball. The sport can be big business and that can make it hard navigating the field of collegiate basketball. The line to becoming a professional has been blurred somewhat.

For now, those who play the game as students will remain .... The Amateurs

Chapter 3: Shot Clock Cheese

Image
It was June and while players the Florida Gators Men's basketball team where taking a few summer courses and keeping in shape, two Senior's were working even harder to make sure they would avenge an elite 8 loss suffered at the hand's of Illinois. Those two seniors were Moses Cuh and Chris Smoove.

Florida had been a solid team that barely managed to get over the hump and into the elite eight the prior year. Their style of play is based on physicality and defense. Their team had boasted a starting five of all seniors with the exception of the junior center, Moses Cuh. Moses lead was the defensive leader on the team but would some times drift in and out of games offensively.

Speaking of defense, the starting backcourt was somewhat vulnerable that year when playing against elite shooters. Maybe that's why Kevin Parker of the Butler Bulldogs almost sent them packing at the buzzer to the tune of 50 points. After that Butler game the Gators made some adjustments to his rotation, giving backup gaurd Chris Smoove more playing time than he'd seen at U of F. The adjustments paid off. Chris Smoove was no "noob" and had all the "Smoove Moves" that helped lead the Gators to the elite 8.

Image

Unfortunately for Florida, the crisp passing from Chris Smoove coupled with the Low Post disruption of Moses Cuh wasn't enough to knock off the fighting Illini.
The Illini like the Butler Bulldogs fought all the way to the buzzer. This time when the last second shot was thrown up from 3 point range, hitting back board and rolling around for what seemed like forever, the game did not end in favor of Florida. The 3 was actually a 3. No one stepped on the line this time.
Chris Smoove and Moses Cuh had their title hopes dashed in seconds. But this year would be different, they were working as hard as they had ever done both on court and in the class room. This year they wanted to assure they would have degrees and a trophy in hand for the best possible chances for success after college.

Chapter 4: What the Game's been missing

Image
While the fight to compensate student athletes for their play was making more progress than ever, The NCAA was pushing it's stance that student athletes are students and should not be payed. NCAA was now reforming itself urging top athletic schools to try to retain students who participated in athletics until the student has graduated.
This was easier for football programs because NFL only allowed players to enter draft after their Jr. year. For basketball, no kid was going to put off making potential millions to stay in school another 2 or three years if they had the talent to go pro.
Also NCAA was loosening up some of it's rules such as allowing coaching staff to provide snacks/limited meals to athletes as long as the snack or meal was provided to the entire team. Before, this was not allowed as the rules stated that scholarship athletes would receive no additional benefits outside of their scholarship money.
But many athletes' scholarship was not enough to cover expenses like food and cost of books/ travel.

Skipping a few years of college for the glory and fame of the pros is not a possibility for most athletes playing collegiate sports. There are only an elite few who make the jump and have long successful careers. Still many leave school early to chase a dream. Some drop out due to off court issues that may include some type of scandal. For the most part these kids want to go a college or university and graduate. They all want success.

Image
This upcoming season is expected to be great for college basketball. Due to an expected lock out in the NBA, many players chose to come back to school and skip entering the NBA draft. There are a handful of guys that are "Pro- Ready" and will follow up their performances in last years March Madness Tournament with even better performances this year.

A few names to Keep in mind this year:
Neal Bridges, Forward - North Carolina
K. Spade, Forward - Miami
Jackson Ellis, Forward - UCLA
Moses Cuh, Center - Florida
David IpodkingCarter, Gaurd - Villanova
Kevin Parker, Gaurd - Butler

Image
This year looks to be an amazing year. This will be what the collegiate game has been missing for so long, that group of guys that come back for another shot at the
championship.

Chapter 5: Let the games begin (continued)

Image

MIAMI... The beach, beautiful people w/ smiling faces, the sun shining down on you. Miami is often equated with thoughts of the "good life".
You just don't hear to many people talk about hard work, grittiness, and the dangers of Miami. Miami is a city of movers and shakers. That can be good for some...
and bad for others. No one knows that better than Miami PG, Anto Garabet.

Just two years ago Gabaret was an All-American High school basketball player lighting the nation on fire to the tune of 28 ppg , 9 apg, and 2 stls pg. With highlights and mixes all over youtube, many projected Garabet to be a for sure one and done player capable of a top 3 pick in the NBA draft. The kid was a whiz with the ball and he knew it. He may have known it a little too well. Anto Garabet committed to Miami University in hopes that he would be the missing piece to lead the Hurricanes to a national championship. Although he had the talent, his mindset would need to prove to be up to par also.

From Day 1 of arriving to Miami Garabet pushed the limits of what was acceptable. Sure, the kid was a pro in waiting, but there was not a single moment of humility during his first few months at Miami. He was very aware of his talent and even spoke to a reporter, who later was discovered to be an ESPN writer, about how he felt about coming in and immediately taking a starting role. Anto went on to discuss with the reporter how those sacrifices would ultimate lead to Miami competing for a championship. The story was ran on ESPN's website and quoted on Sportsceneter. The kid really put his foot in his mouth. Once coach and the upper class men such as Rorry Hobbs (Starting junior Gaurd at the time) got word of this they decided they would need to assist the freshman in becoming humble. The coach did not go easy on Anto in any manner. No one else did either for that matter.

Anto enjoyed being challenged but took it upon himself to skip a practice one Saturday before the season to get some rest. That resulted in Gabaret getting red shirted.
Although Garabet was furious, he knew Miami would need him, this couldn't possibly last in his mind. Besides, he still had all intentions on entering the draft after the season whether he was a red shirt or not.

Unfortunately Miami had a very good start to the season going 10-1 in the first few games. With the solid play of Rory Hobbs and the rise of sophomore Forward K. Spade, there was little need to insert an immature freshman into the lineup. Miami rose to #17 ranking. Garabet still took practices very seriously and began to show signs of maturity.... until he came under investigation for academic fraud. Ultimately the NCAA found no evidence that would stick and the investigation was swiftly over. Still Gabaret's rep took a hit. During the ACC tourney Garabet got his self involved with a few Miami natives who he thought were friends but only ended up trying to get him to endorse a few "street" products. This resulted in another ESPN story that caused more bad publicity.

Anto Garabet's NBA stock to a major hit. No way NBA teams were lining up for a red shirt with this much baggage. He tried to straighten up the last few weeks of the season. The turning point came when he witnessed the Hurricanes make it to the NCAA championship without him ever seeing the floor. When the season ended Miami had 2 guys graduate and one enter the draft.

Garabet wanted to start the next summer with every intention of growing up fast and putting the silliness behind him. He began doing community service and working on his game non stop.

This year Garabet has earned his starting role on the team. He says he wants teammates to be able to count on him, but we have yet to see if he has truly matured. Last year guys stepped up without him. This year he would need to be.... THE NEXT MAN UP.

Chapter 5: Let the games begin (continued)

Image

Air Force began the game on fire making their first 6 shots. Leading the way was Yaboi Shake of Air Force, the senior guard was very affective.
Whether it be driving to the goal, looking for teammates, or defense he was the catalyst for Air Force's early run.

Image

Yaboi Shake (above) breaks away from Miami after making a steal for the fast break. Anto Garabet in his first live game for the Hurricanes was visibly frustrated by the play of Miami. Garabet missed his first 3 shots and had no answers for Yaboi Shake's unrelenting offensive spark.

Image

Image

Miami went on to close the gap to end the half to bring the game to a score of 27 - 24.

K. Spade spent most of the night helping trail the guards of Air Force. There was visible wear and tear on him from expending excessive energy on defense.

Image

Rorry Hobbs did an amazing job asserting himself in the second half. He connected on all four of his free throws and hit a big 3 to keep the game close.
He had a good night with 0 turnovers and 4 assists. He would end the game with 13 points.

Image

Yaboi Shake made an emphatic play to put his team up 2, for a score of 52- 50 as the 2nd half clock ticked down.

Image

K. Spade, the Junior forward showcased hi IQ by drawing a foul to and knocking down to FT's to tie the game. He then played great defense, grabbed the rebound and passed the ball down court to Garabet. Garabet hit a 3 with 6 seconds left on the clock but that would be the final make of the game as Yaboi Shake could not get a game winning layup attempt to go down.

Final Score

Garabet, finished the game as the Canes leading scorer. He showcased a lot of poise after failure to make a positive impact in the first half.
The #10 ranked Canes barely escaped with a victory.

Chapter 5: Let the games begin (continued)

The college season was off to an exciting start.
With the NBA still facing a lock out battle, NCAA College hoops had become the best game in town.
Still, the fight for student- athlete compensation was still at play now more than ever with ESPN, Tru TV, TNT, ABC and CBS all
picking up more games due to the NBA lockout. It was a coup for the NCAA, more eyes, more fans both meant more money.

High Hopes

The teams that were off to good starts were to be expected with Kentucky, Duke, and North Carolina all staying undefeated through the
first two weeks. Of all the Talent that stayed in college this year Cameron Baker or Cam Baker, a freshman forward for Duke,is currently leading the nation in scoring with 27.5 ppg through 4 games. It's only four games in but the 2nd leading scorer Christian Hyde, point gaurd - Baylor, is averaging 21.2 and that is expected to fall as Baylor gets two players back from injury.

A few surprises

Dayton (2-1) have knocked off the #25 Michigan State early in the season. It can be noted that Vince Carter Jr fouled out of a close game with 2 minutes left. Freshman Deoun Williams of Dayton is looking like a stud. He is averaging 10 pts and 11 rebs through 3 games.

On the Downside

Illinois is off to a shaky start after going 2-2 with both wins coming against lowly rated opponents. Don't expect this slide to last long as their is great talent on this team that will play better once chemistry develops more.

Notre Dame (0-3) is the biggest upset of the season, with the head coach under allegations of recruiting violations this team has yet to find it's groove. Despite bringing back it top 4 scorers from a year ago, this team looks to be in a downward spiral.

TG SoGood of Butler Basketball's Blog
Ahhh.... college basketball has been great this season. I've only played in two games but I love the exposure surrounding our team with Kevin getting a lot of NBA exposure. I hope he is able to declare for the draft as that would open up scoring opportunities for me next year :cheeky: lol.
I have not had much free time during the season with classes, practices, games, and team functions. Luckily I keep my ipad around. I have been checking out the stories of other NCAA hoops athletes.

This week NLSC College Networks had a special piece covering the Nation's number #2 scorer, Christian Hyde.
Hyde recieved many accolades coming out of high school. He was even interviewed in Sports Illustrated's article "King of Street",
which took a look at a few High School, College, and Pro players that had overcome the adversities of growing up in
areas with high rates of street violence and homelessness and also low levels of income.

I will post an excerpt from that article later but here is the video that aired on Christian Hyde that I found interesting
phpBB [video]

Directed by Glory D.

That guy is really doing an amazing job running the point for Baylor. He is representing Chicago well. I hope that I get my chance to show Butler fans what I
am really capable of soon, but hey no need to rush things as our team is poised to make the tourney this year. I wouldn't want to mess with our chemistry... Until next time.

Chapter 6: Another Level

Although still early in the season, the extended lockout the NBA is facing has provided scouts and teams an opportunity to get a better look at college prospects.
Teams have gone all in sending not only scouts but also team execs to college games to get an up close and personal feel for some of these young guys.

An anymous NBA executive had the following to say :

Image
Neal Bridges and Cam Baker currently stand out as future All-Stars on the next level but what you really look for is the small intangibles and tendencies that make the few Elite players that can thrust a team into championship contention for several years. Obviously the overseas kid, Jason Tyler, is a franchise point guard but what many executives are doing is spending their efforts during this lockout trying to make sure they are not missing out on other future stars. The talent pool appears to be deep this year, sometimes you get caught up in the media and buzz surrounding prospects but this year franchises have an opportunity to "separate the duds from the studs".

One player that comes to mind when speaking of perennial potential is Kevin Parker of Butler University.
Kevin Parker currently stands out as the most visible and exciting prospect to dawn a Butler jersey since Gordon Hayward was leading the bulldogs to back to
back Championship appearances. Parker's "arrival" to the NBA conversation came upon the heels of his breakout 50 point performance during March Madness. Still,
his game exceeds getting buckets.
