Monday Tip-Off: Modding Projects I’m Working On

Ultimate Jordan Roster for NBA Live 08: Michael Jordan vs. Jazz

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games. This week, I’m tipping things off with a few previews of modding projects that I’m working on, as well as a few ideas I’m toying with.

I’m a bit under the weather today, and seeing as how I wasn’t able to prepare anything for this week’s Monday Tip-Off ahead of time, I don’t have a full column or a video feature for you. However, I thought that I’d follow up on something that I mentioned in Episode #238 of the NLSC Podcast, regarding next month and modding. I don’t want to reveal everything just yet as I’m still getting everything sorted, but I’d like to make March a celebration of modding in our community. I’m hoping to release some new work of my own, and get all of our active modders in on the act.

With any luck, that will all be tipping off in just a few days when March is upon us, but in the meantime, I wanted to share some previews of what I’ve been working on here and there, as well as a few ideas that I’d love to see come to fruition, if and when I can make time to work on them. With that in mind, I am a little hesitant to share some of these images as I’d rather not announce anything that I’m not going to be able to get finished, so please keep in mind that those ideas aren’t set in stone. I do have a couple of projects that are progressing quite nicely though, so without any further ado, here are a few things that I’m working on right now.

1996 Season Mod for NBA Live 2004 v3.0

A little while back, I released a new version of my old 1996 Season Mod for NBA Live 2004. It was a lot of fun revisiting an old favourite, and it’s a project that I’m rather proud of. Since then, Murat has provided me with some fantastic face, jersey, and court updates, so there will be a v3.0 release that’s even bigger and better. Right now I’m just seeing if I can put a few more finishing touches on it, though I couldn’t rule out a v4.0 if other ideas come to mind later on.

Ultimate Jordan Roster

Ever since the Jordan Challenge debuted in NBA 2K11, I’ve toyed with the idea of either adding some classic teams to the NLSC current rosters, or creating a special roster with Michael Jordan’s thirteen Chicago Bulls teams and two Washington Wizards squads, along with an opponent for each of them. The latter idea is a mod that I’ve been working on here and there, and I’ve even released a demo as a proof of concept. There’s still a ways to go, and I’d also like to convert it for use with NBA Live 2005 through NBA Live 07, but I am confident of finishing this one, hopefully in the not too distant future.

Other Modding Ideas I’m Working On

I have a list of modding ideas, and although many of them are not anywhere close to completion as yet, I’ve been working on a couple of them here and there, if only to gauge how much work will be required, and how likely it is that I’ll be able to see them through to a release. While the aforementioned mods are releases that I do expect to have out at some point, there are no guarantees here, though I’ll definitely try to keep working on them and see what can be done, possibly in collaboration with other people in the community. With that being said, here are a few teasers!

Although I’ve become a little burned out on modding over the years, I still get the itch to try my hand at tinkering with the games. Whether it’s creating something new for an old favourite, or seeing if I can make something for the latest release, the urge is still there. To that end, I’m keen to keep working on the mods that are somewhat close to completion, as well as a few other projects in the background, just in case I am able to do something with them. I may be mostly focusing on other content these days, but as long as I can find some time here and there, I do enjoy working on some fun ideas. In the meantime, stay tuned for more details on March’s modding event!
