Last week, we relaunched the NLSC with a new design. The timing was not a coincidence, as August 26th also marked my tenth anniversary as webmaster of the site. Having now run the site for ten of the fifteen years it has existed, I’ve been wanting to post some reflections on the milestone and our future plans but between the NBA 2K12 and NBA Jam: On Fire Edition news, the relaunch and some technical issues following a server move, that idea has been placed on the backburner. Before we get too much further away from the anniversary however, I’d just like to offer a few words of thanks and give everyone a preview of what’s to come here at the NLSC.
Once again, we launched a new design last week and switched to WordPress as our content management system. I’d like to thank the NLSC Team for helping out with the re-design process, particularly Lean for his work on the site art. I realise that not everyone is completely enamoured with the design, though we have received some very nice words about it for which I’d like to say thank you. I’d also like to thank everyone who has sent in constructive feedback about the new design; as I said in the launch announcement, we will be making some tweaks here and there so consider it something of a beta for the moment.
A few people have reported issues with lag while browsing the main site. We’ve made a couple of changes that will hopefully eliminate those problems but we will continue to look into the matter. If you do encounter any issues like that please let us know and be sure to mention the browser you’re using so we can investigate and test the problem properly.
Teething issues aside, we’re excited about the relaunch as it will allow us to bring you bigger and better content here on the NLSC. WordPress is a far superior means of content management than what we were using before and no doubt you’ve seen it in use on a lot of other sites around the web. We’ve integrated it with our Forum user database so you can use your NLSC Forum username to respond to news bulletins and feature articles, as well as access the Forum user control panel from the main page.
Our Downloads section is also now integrated with the Forum and features an upload facility. If you have a Forum account, you can upload files up to 100 MB in size and submit them for inclusion in our database. We’ve lost a lot of good patches and mods over the years due to them being hosted on free file hosts that delete uploads after a period of inactivity and we’d like to build the largest collection of resources for basketball video games on the Internet, so if you’re a patcher we encourage you to upload your files to our database! If you run into any issues or would like to upload a file larger than 100 MB, just shoot me an email or PM in the Forum and we’ll sort it out. We’re very keen to provide these free hosting services for our patchmaking community, so you can expect to see a few reminders about our new Downloads section popping up every now and again.
Speaking of resources, our Wiki has been expanded to include resources for NBA 2K as well as NBA Jam and NBA Street along listings for several other basketball video games. As with our Downloads section and other content, we won’t be losing our old NBA Live content and new NBA Live content will still be a part of the site along with coverage of EA’s future sim releases, but we are looking to add more NBA 2K content, NBA Jam content and more as we continue to expand our coverage to all basketball video games. I’d like to invite everyone willing to share their knowledge of basketball games to assist us in expanding our Wiki articles as we’d like to make it the definitive resource for basketball video games including information on development and game features, modding tutorials, tips and hints, Xbox Live Achievement listings and more. No doubt you’ve seen the other gaming Wikis out there; that’s what we’d like to be for basketball video games.
We’re also looking at bringing you more original content such as blogs, feature articles, strategy guides, previews, reviews and more. I can’t go into detail just yet about some of the things we’re hoping to bring you in the near future as we’re still hammering out details but there is some good stuff lined up. And of course, there’ll be patches/mods. Basically, the relaunch will allow us to do so much more and we’re keen to use all the tools at our disposal to bring you exciting new content and make this the ultimate fansite for basketball video games, so stay tuned.
On a personal note, through all the ups and downs here at the NLSC I’ve had a great time running the site. I’d like to thank the rest of the NLSC Team for all their hard work and their assistance in keeping the site running, as I couldn’t do it alone. I’d also like to thank everyone in the community who continues to visit the site, without your support there’d be no community so thank you for making our efforts worthwhile! I’d also like to thank Tim Tschirner for giving me the opportunity to run the site as well as his NLSC co-founders Lutz van Hasselt and Brien Smith, who established a site I am proud to run and be associated with and did so much for the community. They were my inspiration in the community and it’s an honour to run the NLSC in their stead, I hope I’ll be able to continue doing it for years to come.
Thank you again to everyone for your support and well wishes on my tenth anniversary. For those who have complimented the new design, thank you again for your kind words. For those who aren’t so keen on it, I hope it will grow on you in time or that the tweaks we will make over time will be more to your liking. Constructive feedback and any reports of technical issues are most welcome. I hope everyone sticks around to see the new stuff we’ll be doing in the not too distant future.
Finally, you can find a more informal anniversary post here in the off-topic section of the NLSC Forum. I certainly encourage everyone to participate in the Forum where you’ll find the latest discussion and patch releases; remember that you can use the account to post comments here on the main site and upload submissions to the Downloads section. Please Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter if you haven’t already. We’ve also got a YouTube channel where we post preview videos, gameplay videos, highlight reels and more, so please subscribe!
Thank you one more time for your support and for checking out this anniversary post. I’ve enjoyed the last ten years and look forward to many more. Please continue to stop by the NLSC for your basketball gaming fix, I hope you’ll enjoy what we have on tap for the future. 🙂
