25th Anniversary of NBA Live: Fond NBA Live 95 Memories

To mark the 25th Anniversary of NBA Live, we’re taking a look back at every game in the series with retrospectives and other fun content! This also includes re-running some features from our 20th Anniversary celebrations, with a few revisions. Whether you’re a long-time basketball gamer who grew up with NBA Live and are keen on taking a trip down memory lane, or you’re new to the series and want to learn about its history, we hope that you enjoy celebrating the 25th Anniversary of NBA Live here at the NLSC! Today, I’m sharing some personal recollections of NBA Live 95.

I hope you enjoyed my retrospective of NBA Live 95 that tipped off our celebration of the 25th Anniversary of NBA Live! Although I shared some personal memories of the game in my retrospective, I have a couple of other stories that I’ve saved for their own separate article. Specifically, I wanted to talk about playing NBA Live 95 for the first time on Super Nintendo, and playing a Season with the Houston Rockets with my cousin on PC. It’s the story of how I came to be a fan of the series…and also, how I engineered an unlikely comeback for Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird.

Back in the 90s, we had these things called video stores. Rather than stream a movie over the Internet – and man, would that have been painful to do on dialup – we went and rented a physical copy on VHS tape (and later, DVDs) for a set number of days. What a concept, right? All jokes about technology marching on aside, back in the day it was fun to head down to your local video store and rent some movies or TV shows for the weekend; or, for that matter, video games. See, while a lot of people did have gaming consoles, they didn’t necessarily have an extensive collection of games. We played a lot of the classics, but we didn’t necessarily own them. We rented them.

Chicago Bulls Season in NBA Live 95

That’s how I came to discover NBA Live 95. I was really getting into basketball, and since I was already into video games, I naturally wanted to combine those interests. When I saw NBA Live 95 for Super Nintendo on the shelf, I knew that I had to check it out. I rented it, while my friend ended up renting NHL 95. Now, I never got into hockey (and neither did my friend, come to think of it), but NBA Live 95 made a great impression on me for all the reasons that I outlined in my retrospective. I wished that I owned the game, but new video games were a luxury reserved for birthdays. As such, I rented it out for a week at a time on more than one occasion.

Now, here’s the thing about renting video games in the era of Super Nintendo. Some games did allow you to save your progress, but these saves were stored on battery backup within the cartridge itself. There were no memory cards or hard drives, so when you returned the game, your saves went with it. Because of the limited number of save slots, and the fact that there was no way to prevent the next person who rented the game from messing with your save, you could generally kiss your Season game goodbye if you didn’t finish it by the time you had to return the game. Sometimes you could be lucky, but you couldn’t count on your save being intact the next time.

On one particular rental, I managed to play through an entire Season and Playoffs. It required playing a 26 game season on three minute quarters with a single elimination format in the Playoffs, but I did it. I won the championship with a Chicago Bulls team led by Scottie Pippen, who averaged around 40 points and 8 steals per game. This was before I hopped aboard the Sim Train; at the time, I was a kid who was crazy about basketball and just wanted to dunk, hit threes, and win games. I won the title, and though the championship celebration on SNES wasn’t anything that special, it still felt like a big accomplishment. Undoubtedly, I got my $3 worth of gameplay that week!

Larry Bird on the Houston Rockets in NBA Live 95

It wouldn’t be the last time I played a Season in NBA Live 95. Years later, I picked up a cheap copy of NBA Live 95 PC, when I saw it on sale at the local newsagents of all places. I already owned NBA Live 96 and NBA Live 97 on PC at that point, but I wanted to complete my collection, as well as check out some of the mods and editors from a website I’d discovered: the NBA Live Series Center. Along with my cousin, a fellow basketball fanatic who came to stay with us every school holidays, I started a Season with the Houston Rockets. Our intention was to replay the 1995 NBA season cooperatively, but part of the way through, we were looking for ways to spice it up.

Inspired by the comeback of Michael Jordan during the 1995 season, we decided to have Larry Bird attempt a comeback with our Houston Rockets. We were able to achieve this with Brien’s editor, using it to replace Zan Tabak with Larry Legend. Tabak was chosen because we didn’t really need him backing up Hakeem Olajuwon when there were other bigs who could do the job, and because he was a blonde, white player wearing a Rockets jersey in his portrait. It felt like the best fit, and so we changed his name, bio data, and ratings accordingly. In assigning the newly created Larry Bird his ratings, we also accounted for his injuries and age in 1995.

At the time, I was running an NBA Live fansite called the NBA Live Domain, which also hosted the mods that I created for those early games in the series. I was always looking to branch out with new content though, and one of the recurring features was an ongoing recap of the season my cousin and I were playing. Essentially, it was an early version of our Stories section complete with recaps, stats, and mock-up news articles. When we “announced” the signing of Larry Bird in our story recaps, I added a photo of Larry Bird at a press conference which I’d edited with Microsoft Paint to include the Houston Rockets’ logo. This was the resulting image:

Larry Bird signs with the Houston Rockets in NBA Live 95

Although I did actually know how to make the logo black and white in order to fit in with the original photo, we found that hastily thrown together version so funny that we decided to use it. Incidentally, the original artwork came from Microsoft Complete Basketball, an NBA encyclopedia on CD-ROM that I previously covered in Wayback Wednesday. The image became a recurring joke that we’d look back on and laugh at, and for a while, I had a smaller version of it as my avatar in the NLSC Forum. To be honest, editing Larry Bird into NBA Live 95 and creating that image were the most fun parts about the whole idea. Once the novelty wore off, we had him retire again.

Another crazy idea we had for covering our Season in NBA Live 95 was to document a play-by-play recap of a game against the Orlando Magic. To achieve this, we set up a cassette recorder with a microphone to note made and missed shots, turnovers, and fouls. We then transcribed the entire game in the format of the play-by-play recaps that you can still see on NBA.com’s live scores. Looking back, it was a lot of work for something that not a lot of people would’ve paid attention to, but it was a fun part of our basketball gaming experience nevertheless. Just so that it doesn’t feel like a huge waste of time, you can find that full play-by-play recap below for posterity.

We never did finish that season, and sadly the save file was lost several hard drives and backups ago. In hindsight we should’ve simulated more often or just played the Playoffs. The habit of playing every single game is one that’s made season play a long grind for me, and I’m still trying to break it. I don’t regret it though as it’s given me a lot of fond memories throughout several different games. Apart from the Larry Bird comeback, that season also saw us make a few trades, and play one game with arcade rules. Hakeem Olajuwon had 95 steals in that contest, not only setting a single game record but propelling him right to the top of the league leaders!

Scottie Pippen dunks in NBA Live 95 SNES

My basketball gaming habits and style have changed quite drastically over time. I wasn’t too invested in realism when I first played NBA Live 95 on SNES, and even a few years later I was quite willing to get a little silly with a Season game. Although I prefer a more realistic approach now, I firmly believe there’s a lot of fun to be had when you stretch the limits of realism. I also believe that’s part of the charm of older games like NBA Live 95. I’m glad that basketball games have come as far as they have, but I’ll always hold great fondness and nostalgia for the game that, along with NBA Jam Tournament Edition on PC, drew me into the virtual hardwood.

Stay tuned throughout the rest of 2019 for more 25th Anniversary of NBA Live content! Share your thoughts in the comments below, and join in the discussion here in the NLSC Forum!

The NBA Live 25th Anniversary logo is a beauty. I hope EA Sports brings the early 2000s cover back for a special edition.
