Foot Planting Technology is the name given to an animation technique intended to emulate realistic player movement and eliminate skating by ensuring that players plant their feet when they move and change direction. It was introduced in the Xbox 360 version of NBA Live 07 and involves various animations such as players squaring up for a jumpshot, gathering themselves for a dunk or layup attempt and updated dribbling animations that seek to eliminate "waterbug"-like movements. It also incorporates player momentum.

The animations have been further refined in NBA Live 08 and NBA Live 09 with a focus on making the game smoother and the players more responsive while making sure they still plant their feet on the floor.
