Development & Features

NBA 2K15 is a sim-oriented basketball video game, retaining popular features such as MyGM (New Gen), Association (Prior Gen), MyCAREER and MyTEAM, as well as the Pro Stick dribbling and shooting controls. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game continue to build upon the new Eco-Motion engine, which made its debut in the PS4/X1 version of NBA 2K14.

On July 15th, it was revealed that Pharrell Williams "curated" the music for NBA 2K15. On August 6th, 2014 it was announced that Crew mode will be back in the game for current-gen consoles, then on August 7, 2014 it was announced that the game would have a new mode called MyLEAGUE, which is similar to NBA 2K14's MyGM mode but with added customization and improvements. On August 13, 2014 it was announced that the PC version would have all the same features and graphics capacity as the Xbox One and PS4 versions.

On September 17 2014, it was announced a face scan would be introduced. Gamers can utilise the PlayStation camera or Kinect to scan their faces into NBA 2K15 for use in MyCAREER. Following the addition of 14 Euroleague teams in NBA 2K14, NBA 2K15 included 11 new Euroleague teams for a total of 25.

Cover Player

On May 6th 2014, Kevin Durant was revealed as the cover player for NBA 2K15, a day after being named the NBA's Most Valuable Player for the 2013/2014 season. The official cover art was revealed on July 15th.

Pre-Order Bonuses

On June 5th, a promotional spot featuring Kevin Durant and some notable NBA 2K gamers titled "Most Valuable Players" was aired during Game 1 of the 2014 NBA Finals. The spot revealed several pre-order bonuses:

  • 5000 VC
  • A throwback Kevin Durant MyTEAM card
  • Two MyTEAM packs
  • Custom MyPLAYER custom leg sleeves, inspired by Kevin Durant

PC Version

A PC release was confirmed for NBA 2K15 at the same time Kevin Durant was announced as a cover player. After much speculation, it was revealed on August 12th 2014 that the PC version would be identical to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game, thus featuring the same gameplay, modes, and pre-order bonuses. It is therefore also the first PC release to utilise Virtual Currency.

The minimum and recommended system requirements were revealed on August 21st, 2014.

Reception

NBA 2K15 received mostly positive reviews, and was well-received by basketball gamers. It holds Metacritic scores of 87 for the PC version, 83 for the PlayStation 4 version, and 82 for the Xbox One version. The game was lauded for its gameplay, deep game modes, and graphics, generally being considered a pleasing improvement on its predecessor. The storyline of MyCAREER did receive some criticism however, mostly for its rigid structure and the personality of the player's character in cutscenes.
