NBA 2K16 is an NBA basketball simulation video game by 2K Sports. It is the seventeenth installment of the NBA 2K series, and was released on September 29th 2015 in North America for Windows, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, though pre-order customers were able to take advantage of an "Early Tip-Off Weekend" promotion, with a September 25th release. It is the direct sequel to NBA 2K15 and was followed by NBA 2K17. The three main cover players are James Harden, Anthony Davis, and Stephen Curry, with Michael Jordan appearing on the special edition cover.

Development & Features[edit]

NBA 2K16 is a sim-oriented basketball video game, retaining popular features such as MyCAREER, MyGM, MyLEAGUE, MyPARK and MyTEAM, as well as the Pro Stick. The PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game continue to build upon the new Eco-Motion engine, which made its debut in the PS4/X1 version of NBA 2K14.

On June 4th 2015, Stephen Curry, James Harden, and Anthony Davis were revealed as the cover players for NBA 2K16. On June 24th, it was announced that a Special Edition of the game would feature Michael Jordan on the cover.

Visual Concepts tapped Spike Lee to help produce NBA 2K16's MyCAREER, in which gamers take control of a player nicknamed "Frequency Vibrations". The mode takes gamers through the player's career, beginning in high school, also include off-court storylines.

NBA 2K16 saw the debut of 2K Pro-Am, a mode in which gamers play five-on-five games with full NBA rules, using the MyPLAYERs. Gamers can also create their own courts, jerseys, and other branding for their Pro-Am teams. The mode was first announced in July 2015, shortly before EA Sports' unveiling of LIVE Pro-Am, a similar concept. In December 2015, 2K Sports announced that they would be bringing eSports to NBA 2K16 through the Road To The Finals Tournament in 2K Pro-Am, with a trip to the 2016 NBA Finals and a cash prize of $250,000 up for grabs. "Pre-season" qualifying play tipped off on January 30th.

In an episode of NBA 2KTV, it was revealed that NBA 2K16 would feature at least three new retro teams: the 2000 Toronto Raptors, 2001 Los Angeles Lakers, and 2008 Boston Celtics. Nine additional retro teams were later revealed over the course of the preview season: the 2003 Dallas Mavericks, 2004 Detroit Pistons, 2006 Miami Heat, 2000 Portland Trail Blazers, 2008 Houston Rockets, 2005 Phoenix Suns, 2013 Miami Heat, 2007 Cleveland Cavaliers, and 2004 Minnesota Timberwolves. NBA 2K16 also expands upon the selection of available shoes, improves the crowd, and enhances player movement and animations.

Special Edition[edit]

On June 24th 2015, 2K announced that a Special Edition of NBA 2K16 would be made available, featuring Michael Jordan on the cover. The Special Edition will be available to pre-order customers on September 25th, and will contain both in-game bonuses and collectible memorabilia:

PC Version[edit]

A PC release was confirmed for NBA 2K16 at the same time the cover players were announced. The minimum and recommended system requirements were revealed to be the same as NBA 2K15.

Reception[edit]

NBA 2K16 has received mostly favourable reviews, with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions both holding a Metacritic score of 86. Reactions from the basketball gaming community have also been mainly positive, although reactions to the MyCAREER storyline written by Spike Lee have been somewhat mixed. The PC version has also received some criticism due to optimisation issues and crashes, however many of those problems were resolved with official patches. NBA 2K16 has received five title updates on PC, PS4, and X1, with generally pleasing results. Overall, it is considered to be another strong entry in the NBA 2K series.
