This tutorial, created by Patman, will assist you in creating cyberfaces for NBA Live 2001.

The Tutorial[edit]

To make cyberfaces for the NBA Live games you will need a few programs before you can start.

PROGRAMS NEEDED TO MAKE CYBERFACES[edit]

  1. EA Graphics Editor. Created by Tim Tschirner and Brien Smith. This can be downloaded at the NLSC.
  2. JASC's PAINT SHOP PRO (or any other image editor). This can be downloaded at Jasc Software.

If you have both of these items, then you are ready to create your own custom cyberfaces.

CREATE A PLAYER IN NBA LIVE 2001[edit]

1. Start EA Sports NBA LIVE 2001 and click on the button with the jersey on it. Then select CREATE PLAYER.

2. Create the player that you want in the game. Design your player with the appearance, skill level and personal information that you want him to have.

3. When you've set all of the information to where you want it to be, click SELECT FACE IMAGE button.

Select face button.gif

4. Click LOAD IMAGE. Ignore all the other information on the screen. Click CONTINUE. Now click the FORWARD button (the little arrow button on the bottom right).

5. If you're creating a black player, DON'T WORRY! You will be changing that face with your own soon. Click ADD.

6. You will see the box PLAYER SUCCESSFULLY SAVED. Click OK.

7. Exit the game and return to Windows. In Windows go back to the NBA Live 2001 directory.

8. You can now edit that created face in the art\ingame\textures\userfaces directory. The face will appear as a file called face000.fsh. If you have already created other custom faces in your game, you will see those too. They will be created with a number, in order. For example, your first will be face000 your second will be face001 and so on.

Open face to create.gif

9. Run the EA Graphics Editor and then open your created face. To the left you will see the name of the file. Click on it and then it will appear on the right hand side. You can now extract this image to be edited. Click on the BLUE DISK icon and then choose SAVE AS JPG.

Now you can name this file and click save. You will see a JPEG Properties box appear. Make sure the compression quality is set to 100 and then click OK.

10. Now open the image editor software of your choice. You can download free demo of Paint Shop Pro at www.jasc.com, or you can use any other software that you are familar with. This part of the tutorial is the same as the previous year's. The trick to creating a good cyberface is practice, practice and practice.

Editing the images[edit]

Step 1. Using PAINT SHOP PRO (or any other software), open your file that you've extracted.

Open face to create.gif

Step 2. Now open an image with the face you want to create, copy it, and then paste it over the face of the cyberface image and then save it. (I'm using last year's cyberface from NBA LIVE 2000. If you have one for the player you're trying to build, this is the fastest way to build one for 2001.)

Lasso face.gif

An easy rule of thumb is this... highlight the area around the face with the LASSO tool (that's the little icon that looks like a rope with a loop in it). Draw a circle around the image you want to copy. Go just above the eyebrows, around the cheeks and just below the chin.

Now you can select COPY from the EDIT menu. Once you have your face copied, then go back to your created face, then go to the EDIT menu again and choose PASTE.

Paste face.gif

This will paste your NEW face on the created face. This is a practice makes perfect technique. You can resize, rotate, color change and modify it as much as you want. Try it a few times. You will soon get the hang of it.

Importing the created images back into the .fsh file[edit]

Step 1. Start EA Graphics Editor, just like you did to extract the files above, you can import you new image into the place of the other one. Open the face000.FSH file, or whatever file you have chosen to edit, and then click on the name of your image (left hand side). You should again see the face of your created character.

Open face to import.gif

Now you can click on TOOLS, then IMPORT WIZARD. Click the top circle. It should read: IMPORT AN EXISTING EXTERNAL FILE INTO THE CURRENT OPEN IMAGE, then click next.

Import existing box.gif

You will now see the old image to the left and a BROWSE button to the right.

Import wizard.gif

Using the browse button, find your image and then click OPEN and then NEXT. It will say DATA PROCESSING COMPLETE, then click FINISHED.

Data complete.gif

To confirm the change, click on the name again (left side) and then on the right you should see your new image.

Exit the EA Graphics Editor. You are finished. Start NBA LIVE 2001 again, and dunk all over everyone!

CREDITS[edit]

I hope this tutorial helps you build cyberfaces of your own. I have spent many hours building and rebuilding my own, but it's worth it to see myself playing along side the real NBA players. I would like to thank Tim, Lutz, and Brien for their programs that help me edit my own faces. Without them, this tutorial wouldn't be possible. Thanks guys!!
