Episode Hosts Synopsis Release Date
Episode #356: State of NBA 2K Addressed Andrew & Dee4Three

Before we get rolling, we touch on the subject of virtual hardwood photography, and offer up some tips to get the best angles. After that, we get right into our main topic: the current state of NBA 2K, and our latest thoughts on NBA 2K21. How is the latest game - and the series as a whole - looking as we enter the new year, with a new generation? What are our concerns for the future, and what responsibility does have the community have in providing 2K with constructive feedback? In this week's mailbag, we're talking about NBA 2K13 on Wii U, and what - if anything - EA Sports should take from NBA Live 19.

Episode #357: Interview with Andy Hull Andrew & Dee4Three

Special Guest: Andy Hull

This week we're interviewing Andy Hull, the creator of Dunk Lords and programmer on Spelunky! Andy talks about his background in programming and breaking into the industry, which included a stint making wooden toys. He also provides us with several insights into the development of Dunk Lords, which began life as a prototype called Buckets of Blood. We also talk about NBA Jam and Andy's other video gaming influences, how working on Spelunky helped him to go on to create his own game, and ask a few listener questions that were sent in for this week's special edition of the mailbag.

Episode #358: What Could’ve Been, And May Yet Be Andrew & Dee4Three

Browsing the Marketplace on Xbox Series X reveals that NBA Jam: On Fire Edition is still available, and it’s definitely still worth getting. Conversely, there’s no getting our hands on NBA Live 20, but according to its recently discovered ESRB rating, it was set to come out on PC. We commiserate about what might’ve been, but consider what it may mean for the series’ eventual return. Also in the news this week is the status of Start Today in NBA 2K21. The situation is understandable, but the lack of transparency is frustrating as usual. Dusting off NBA Live 16 also leads us to reminisce about one of the better NBA Live games from the past generation. In this week’s mailbag, we answer questions about Ronnie 2K and the community, and what we’ve been playing in NBA 2K21.

Episode #359: Like Something Out Of A Video Game! Andrew & Dee4Three

The announcement of Giannis Antetokounmpo as the new face of NBA Live Mobile has piqued our interest in the success of the game. As it turns out, it's performing even better than we realised. This leads us to reflect on how it's kept the NBA Live brand alive, and what this means for a future console/PC release. The fifteenth anniversary of Kobe Bryant's historic 81-point game inspires us to not only look back at the achievement, but its impact on the virtual hardwood. We discuss the idea of such performances being described as "something out of a video game", and the difficulty in replicating those feats. The need for a new challenge mode also comes up. In the mailbag this week, we're talking about NBA Live's turning point, and a fantasy scenario involving an upcoming retro roster mod for NBA 2K11.

January 24th, 2021
Episode #360: An NBA Live Revolution? Andrew & Dee4Three

There continues to be a surge of interest in NBA Live 19, with several gamers picking it up again. This raises the issue of NBA 2K fatigue, and the other reasons - including accessibility, simplicity, and lack of predatory mechanics and toxicity - that gamers are eschewing the more up to date NBA 2K21 Next Gen. We once again note that the door is wide open for NBA Live. In our mailbag this week, we're talking about purchasing digital NBA moments, and various obstacles that modders face. Are we likely to invest in digital NBA collectibles, and are Visual Concepts deliberately making modding more difficult?

Episode #361: Taking Them To School Andrew & Dee4Three

Recent experiences in MyLEAGUE lead us to reflect on the meaning of "sim" and how it can be fun to bend reality, especially in fantasy scenarios. Some new additions have also been made to the collection. However, the big news this week is the return of EA Sports' college football series, and what that might mean for both NBA Live and the March Madness/NCAA Basketball series. We discuss our history with college basketball titles and interest in future releases, as well as the pushback on interest in (and the need for) NBA Live's return. In this week's mailbag, we talk about the possibility of a standalone G League mode, and what it would take to instigate real change with NBA 2K.

February 7th, 2021
Episode #362: Putting the Ball in the Basket Andrew & Dee4Three

A bevy of retro season roster mods are being produced at the moment, which we're excited to see. The fact that there are a couple of 2005 season mods out or in the works reminds us that time is marching on, and our nostalgia is getting old! We also have some advice for getting big projects done and released. Meanwhile, NBA 2K21 Current Gen and Next Gen have both received new patches, so we briefly discuss some of the changes. This week's main discussion is a deep dive into shooting mechanics: the history and evolution, the best and worst concepts, and everything in between. In the latest mailbag, we discuss the forthcoming Space Jam sequel, and consider another What If scenario.

February 14th, 2021
Episode #363: Worth A Second Look Andrew & Dee4Three

After dusting off the Xbox 360 version of NBA Live 06 prompted a surprising change of heart for one of us, this week's episode discusses revisiting old games and seeing them in a new light. We consider the factors that influence changes in our opinions of previous games, and offer up some personal examples of games that we now view differently. We also tackle the phenomenon of games that were once heavily criticised subsequently being held up as benchmarks. In the mailbag this week, we react to a suggestion that would result in more goodwill for NBA 2K's recurrent revenue mechanics.

Episode #364: 10 Games To Last A Year Andrew & Dee4Three

After replaying Slam City with Scottie Pippen recently, we vow to dedicate a whole show to it...after we can defeat Fingers, the first opponent. With March Modness 2021 right around the corner, we look ahead to another celebration of modding, and some of our own projects. Seeing as how it's a slow news week, we're playing a game: the ten games we'd choose for a year in isolation, specifically five basketball and five non-basketball games. Which titles make our lists, especially once we start changing up the game with some new rules? In the mailbag this week, we're talking about the Arcade1Up NBA Jam machine, and the current state of NBA 2K's graphics.

February 28th, 2021
Episode #365: Time To Get Creative Andrew & Dee4Three

Deep Create-a-Player features are a must, and it's tough not to get wistful when we see them in other sports titles. Some of the features in MLB The Show give us ideas for what we'd like to see in NBA Live and NBA 2K's creation tools. The pain of losing functionality when servers are shut down leads us to discuss the possibility of a subscription model for basketball games. In the news this week, Ultimate Rivals: The Court has been announced. We're intrigued, and looking forward to an NBA Jam-like game with Tim Kitzrow on the call. Time with The W also has us nostalgic for an era when microtransactions weren't everything. In the mailbag this week, we answer a question about the necessary focus in order for NBA Live to make a triumphant return, and Frankenstein our ideal game, picking and choosing elements from a number of existing basketball titles.

March 7th, 2021
Episode #366: A Lifetime On The Virtual Hardwood Andrew & Dee4Three

A recent modding disaster inspires us to reflect on some of our past follies, and the need to adopt good modding practices. In particular, we note the appeal of a fresh start, and how it distracts us from what's already on the workbench. Our main discussion topic this week is something we've been thinking about for a while: the stigma against older basketball gamers, and adult gamers in general. We discuss the issue of age-appropriate hobbies, the benefits of gaming regardless of age, and how long we see ourselves hitting the virtual hardwood. In this week's mailbag, we're talking about putting the fun back into the sim titles, and an interesting scenario regarding the three-point line.

March 14th, 2021
Episode #367: Courting Controversy Andrew & Dee4Three

The surprising quality of Garfield Kart (of all things) leads us to consider how to make a good rip-off, and where so many NBA Jam clones have come up short. However, our main topic this week is controversial and unpopular basketball gaming opinions. We share a few of our own potentially divisive takes, and react to the fantastic responses we received on Twitter when we invited our followers to share theirs. As it turns out, some opinions may be more popular than some people think! Additionally, we touch on how people are discouraged from sharing unpopular opinions - or just opinions in general - particularly valid criticism. In this week's mailbag, we return to the question of when releases should and likely will end for Current Gen.

March 21st, 2021
Episode #368: You Say Ancient, We Say Classic Andrew & Dee4Three

Picking up some extra copies of NBA 2K12 has revealed some interesting details, but we're still searching for answers about a possible limited edition cover. Meanwhile, comments on a recent YouTube video underscore how NBA 2K21 Next Gen wasn't the leap that many gamers were hoping for. Speaking of NBA 2K's future, we discuss Visual Concepts' recent acquisition of HookBang, and what it means for the series. We also have some thoughts on remarks from Sony's Jim Ryan regarding backwards compatibility, and his dismissal of classic games as unplayable. In this week's mailbag, we're building our own arcade basketball game based on one of three classic titles, and recalling our experiences with Sony's NBA series.

March 28th, 2021
Episode #369: Do You Want To Make A Mod, Man? Andrew & Dee4Three

An annoying issue in MLB The Show 20 leads us to reflect on some of the flaws in our all-time favourite basketball games. We conclude that there isn't a title that we wouldn't change something in; content, a mechanic, or a noteworthy bug that needed fixing. Also, March Modness may be over, but we've still got modding on our minds. For anyone looking to get into the hobby, we offer up some advice, and discuss the various possibilities. In this week's mailbag, we're throwing it back to NBA Live 2001, and discussing the benefits of the User vs. User experience.

April 4th, 2021
Episode #370: MyTEAM Card Tricks Andrew & Dee4Three

After last week's show, we were inspired to spend some more time with NBA Live 2001, and have a few more thoughts to share. A couple of options from the game also bring to mind suggestions for additional roster management functions and MyNBA settings. Our main discussion this week focuses on MyTEAM, specifically issues with overpowered cards. We note how it encourages NBA 2K's pushy recurrent revenue mechanics, waters down the gameplay with an homogenised experience, and misrepresents NBA history. Notably, the issues also extend beyond MyTEAM into MyCAREER. In this week's mailbag, we're talking about Blacktop, as well as the idea of trash talking mechanics.

April 11th, 2021
Episode #371: Hold The Guacamole Andrew & Dee4Three

We've both caught the modding bug, but one of us has been far more motivated and productive than the other. Of course, that doesn't stop us from making lofty plans for roster projects! A recent Tweet by the EA Playtesting account offers a glimmer of hope for the future of NBA Live, though we're wary about reading too much into it. Meanwhile, polls on Twitter and Reddit have made it clear how the community feels about the prospect of shot aiming in NBA 2K22...and invited toxic responses from the online elitists. In this week's mailbag, we're reminiscing about ESPN NBA 2K5 and NBA Live 2005, and discussing the idea of MyTEAM being released as a standalone game.

April 18th, 2021
Episode #372: Sports Gaming vs. Competitive Gaming Andrew & Dee4Three

Roster editing has come to Basketball Classics, and we're very impressed with what Josh and Dave have managed to implement. Meanwhile, the latest patch for NBA 2K21 Next Gen is slightly less exciting, but nevertheless contains a couple of important fixes. Taking a suggestion from Twitter, this week's main discussion concerns the difference between sports gaming and competitive gaming, and the effects that the latter has had on the NBA 2K series. We talk about how gameplay and the online scene in NBA 2K could improve, and how NBA Live could capitalise on the situation. In this week's mailbag, we reflect on Acclaim's NBA Jam games, and the quality of sequels.

April 25th, 2021
Episode #373: Shiver With Anticipation Andrew & Dee4Three

Our first foray into playing NBA 2K17 head to head using Parsec and Steam Remote Play didn't go as well as we hoped, but we're not giving up just yet. Following up on the announcement that prompted our main discussion in Episode #368, the PlayStation 3 Store is remaining open, preserving NBA Jam: On Fire Edition a little longer. Although the preview season is still months away, we've been thinking about past innovations that changed basketball gaming, and what would excite us for NBA 2K22. Surprisingly, it's still not shoelace physics! In this week's mailbag, we're taking a look back at NBA Live 09 on PlayStation 2, and discuss buying prior gen games after we've moved on to a new console.

May 2nd, 2021
Episode #374: Contractual Obligations Andrew & Dee4Three

It warms our hearts that gamers are still interested in watching User vs. User gameplay videos! Sadly, not everyone is open to the idea of playing on broadcast camera angles, but gatekeepers gonna gatekeep. Reports that Luka Doncic has broken his contract with EA Sports to sign with 2K Sports have caused a stir this week. We discuss the speculation, and reflect on what it might mean - if anything - for the fortunes and future of NBA Live. In this week's mailbag, we're taking another look back at the rough start for NBA Live on Xbox 360, and talking about Tecmo NBA Basketball and Tecmo Super NBA Basketball.

May 9th, 2021
Episode #375: The Gold Standard of Retro Hoops Gaming Andrew & Dee4Three

The announced lineup for EA Play 2021 doesn't include NBA Live, which has given life to more speculation and clickbait. We share our thoughts on the situation, and our expectations regarding any surprise announcements. We've also been having a lot of fun playing NBA Live 10 over Parsec, and while it makes us wistful at times, it's also given us a new appreciation for the game. Raja Bell has also become a virtual hardwood legend. In the mailbag this week, we're talking about the effect that basketball gaming discourse has on opinions and enjoyment, as well as some of the worst cyberfaces throughout the years.

May 16th, 2021
Episode #376: Showtime on the Virtual Hardwood Andrew & Dee4Three

An idea for an NBA Live 10 game over Parsec resulted in an epic clash that produced some memorable highlights for us both. On that note, the return of the NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week has us thinking about what makes good basketball video game highlights. We discuss how unique scenarios, rare animations, and context add importance, emotion, and just plain "oomph" to plays on the virtual hardwood. We're also sorry that NBA Live 10's Fantasy Teams mode is a thing of the past. In this week's mailbag, we're talking about RetroArch, and the possibility of special editions of NBA Live or NBA 2K that utilise old school aesthetics.

May 23rd, 2021
Episode #377: You Know It's An NBA Game, Right? Andrew & Dee4Three

We tip things off by paying tribute to the late Mark Eaton. Reflecting on the first two weeks of the revitalised NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week, we note that NBA-oriented gaming highlights are rarer these days. This leads to a discussion on the decline in popularity of NBA-oriented modes, in favour of online team play. We note that current attitudes towards the NBA and changing demographics among gamers play a huge role here. Meanwhile, things haven't been as rosy with NBA Live 10 and Parsec this past week, but we're not giving up our retro kick just yet. In this week's mailbag, we're talking about NBA Live possibly using the Frostbite engine, and looking back at NBA Courtside 2002.

May 30th, 2021
Episode #378: The Hangar & The Workshop Andrew & Dee4Three

Having sorted out our issues with Parsec, we've enjoyed a full week of basketball gaming. From epic clashes with video game legends in NBA Live 10 to co-op play in NBA 2K Playgrounds 2, we've had a lot of fun on the virtual hardwood and blacktop this week! Spotlighting recent modding developments leads to us discussing various ideas for retro rosters, as well as philosophies for rating players. We also react to the recent leaks regarding the cover players for the standard and Legend editions of NBA 2K22. In this week's mailbag, we're looking back at the NBA 2K21 Next Gen trailer, and discussing some interesting issues with licensing and likeness rights.

June 6th, 2021
Episode #379: It's Something Unpredictable Andrew & Dee4Three

Owing to a mixture of fatigue and satisfaction with NBA 2K21, we've been getting our virtual hardwood fix elsewhere this past week. NBA 2K20, NBA Live 10, and even NBA Live 95 have been in the rotation, though NBA 2K20 reminded us of some woefully inaccurate ratings for players on the historical teams. We've also still trying to get more games working on Parsec. A recent favourite is receiving regular roster updates, and we're inspired to brainstorm some out-of-the-box modding ideas. In this week's mailbag, we consider the potential impact of NFL 2K on future NBA 2K titles. We also get philosophical about times in our lives that we'd revisit, for basketball gaming and other reasons.

June 13th, 2021
Episode #380: Why Isn't This On PC? Andrew & Dee4Three

We're not sure if it's a first for modding as a whole, but we may have engaged in the first remote modding session in the history of our community! Our efforts ensured that we'll be able to set up retro teams in NBA Live 10 quickly and easily, which we've already tried with fun results. We've also revisited NBA Jam: On Fire Edition and NBA Street Vol. 2 this week, and were reminded why we love them. Of course, it also makes us wistful about the current selection of basketball titles. Meanwhile, Madden 22 PC being a Current Gen port raises some concerns. We also catch up on recent mod releases including NBL 2K21 and a great Larry Bird face, and note a potential NBA 2K22 leak. In this week's mailbag, we recall NBA Action 95 for the Sega Genesis, and compare toxicity among NBA 2K gamers to other communities.

June 20th, 2021
Episode #381: Recurrent Fun, Not Recurrent Revenue Andrew & Dee4Three

We have a lot on our minds this week! Our NBA Live 10 sessions continued with another epic clash that delighted us with its authenticity. NBA Action 94 and 95 were also briefly in the rotation, and they had their interesting points. Unfortunately, NBA Live 15 and 16 provided a reminder of staples that have been missing from the series for years. Playing NBA Live 10 as well as NBA 2K14 on PS4 also leads us to reminisce about external factors that tainted our first impressions of games we later came to enjoy. Meanwhile, a comment blaming the community for recurrent revenue mechanics has us fired up; suffice to say, we disagree! We also cover a recent fix in NBA 2K21 Next Gen, and answer a mailbag question about gameplay improvements that we're yet to see.

June 27th, 2021
Episode #382: A Community Connected Andrew & Dee4Three

We haven't been able to get enough of Parsec as of late, but we're not the only ones taking a shine to it. More members of the community are participating in head-to-head games, with Parsec facilitating clashes in NBA 2K17 and NBA 2K19 using retro season and classic team mods. Speaking of retro season mods, which is our favourite so far? As for NBA Live 10, it's still on our agenda, as we've got plenty more ideas for Fantasy Teams mode! Fresh NBA 2K22 rumours give us something else to talk about this week, though we still miss the longer and more exciting preview seasons of yesteryear. In this week's mailbag, we answer a question about the new Space Jam game, which leads us to reflect on some other esoteric games starring basketball players.

July 4th, 2021
Episode #383: It's Still All Speculation Andrew & Dee4Three

Before we started recording this week's show, we played games of Double Dribble Playoff Edition and the SNES version of NBA Live 95. One holds up a little better than the other, but both were fun to revisit! Speaking of NBA Live, EA Sports are set to make an announcement regarding the return of one of their old series. Will it be their long-running NBA title, their college hoops series, or something else? Meanwhile, as the NBA 2K22 preview season looms, some apologists are already warming up their excuses. In this week's mailbag, we're talking about the peak era for basketball gaming, and underrated gameplay additions.

July 11th, 2021
Episode #384: A Couple of Pre-Ordering, PC Nerds Andrew & Dee4Three

The cover players, release date, and pre-order bonuses for NBA 2K22 have been revealed, confirming leaks and speculation, and drawing some boorish comments about one player in particular. Unfortunately, the PC version will be a prior gen port once again this year, and we have some thoughts to share on that. Despite the remarks of one wannabe content creator, PC gamers have a right to be dismayed...and to play NBA 2K, for that matter. The lack of a demo on all platforms is likewise disappointing. Elsewhere, a Tweet mentioning a partnership between LeBron James and EA has people talking, though we don't want to get ahead of ourselves (again). We also touch on Steam Deck, and some listener responses to last week's mailbag topics.

July 18th, 2021
Episode #385: Stop Me If You've Heard This One Andrew & Dee4Three

Parsec continues to impress, as we've now found a way to play NBA Jam: On Fire Edition by using it in conjunction with the Xbox One app. Between NBA Live 10 and the two NBA Jam games from EA Sports, we're deeply entrenched in a 2009-2011 retro basketball gaming kick! Looking to the future, we've had our first glimpse of NBA 2K22. The game is set to feature the best Dirk Nowitzki face we've ever seen, but we're sceptical about some of the touted gameplay improvements. On the other hand, matchmaking in The City and Seasons in MyCAREER sound promising. Meanwhile, EA Play gave us little hope for the future of NBA Live, leading us to join our fellow gamers in lament. We also reflect on our favourite teams to use in Play Now games.

July 25th, 2021
Episode #386: Don't Forget to Pump Fake Andrew & Dee4Three

We've been sinking our teeth into Road Trip in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, as the co-op experience has proven to be a blast. The more we've played, the more we've been able to develop chemistry and hone our strategies. Speaking of which, we discuss moves and techniques that are all too easily overlooked, and some of the most unstoppable moves and players in basketball video games. We also react to the latest vague update on NBA Live, and the prospect of a F2P model for sim basketball games. Additionally, reflecting on our forthcoming 25th Anniversary leads to a story about the community circa 2004.

August 1st, 2021
Episode #387: The Return of Leftos (Part 1) Andrew & Dee4Three

Special Guest: Leftos

It's the Return of Leftos! The former NLSC Team member and original host of the show joins us to talk about his eight years working at Visual Concepts, where he is now the Lead Software Engineer Backend on the NBA 2K series. We talk about his work on the game's various franchise modes, and the dedication to the franchise experience even as modes such as MyCAREER and MyTEAM have become more popular. The concept of realism in franchise modes is also brought up, along with Leftos' background in basketball. Oh, and the importance of adding some unruly geese in The City.

August 8th, 2021
Episode #388: The Return of Leftos (Part 2) Andrew & Dee4Three

Special Guest: Leftos

It's the second and final part of the triumphant return of Leftos to the show! In Part 2, we discuss the impact and importance of the community wishlists. On that note, we've got some suggestions for further customisation in MyNBA. Leftos reveals some interesting insights into a few of the programming challenges he's faced so far, the reasons behind certain design choices, and some of the technical roadblocks that stand in the way of adding new features. He also talks about what it's been like to develop video games during the pandemic, and names his favourite NBA 2K game that he's worked on so far.

August 15th, 2021
Episode #389: The Developers Who Cried Skill Gap Andrew & Dee4Three

We're back to our regularly scheduled programming this week, and there's a tiny bit of NBA 2K22 news to cover! There's also some controversy as Ronnie 2K's ratings Tweets are drawing the ire of players, and for that matter, their wives. We also reflect on recent retro basketball gaming sessions, which have featured NCAA Basketball 09, and further progress in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition's Road Trip. Revisiting NBA 2K14 has also illuminated some startling changes to MyCAREER over the years. In the return of the listener mailbag, we suggest some examples of underrated players in various video games over the years.

August 22nd, 2021
Episode #390: Well, It's No Garfield Kart! Andrew & Dee4Three

After reflecting on a major milestone, we turn our attention to the new 2K NextMakers program. It's not something we're likely to be a part of, and we have our concerns about its effectiveness. Meanwhile, our first game of NBA Live 10 in a few weeks produced one of the most memorable moments either of us have ever experienced on the virtual hardwood. We also continue to marvel at the detail in the last great NBA Live release. Elsewhere, prices are rising for video game collectors, and it's beginning to affect hoops titles as well. There's some NBA 2K22 news, but it's difficult to muster excitement about go-karts in MyCAREER. In this week's mailbag, we discuss the status of two former NBA 2K developers, and roster inaccuracies.

August 29th, 2021
Episode #391: A Tale of Two Developer Blogs Andrew & Dee4Three

The NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament has tipped off, and it's been a blast so far! It seems we've also found the chief cause of input lag: location, location, location. Nevertheless, our Road Trip continues in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, and a recent session produced an exciting moment indeed. Parsec has also allowed the community to connect and play with some fantastic retro season mods for NBA 2K10 and NBA 2K11 PC, which don't get enough attention. We also address a couple of concerning issues in the modding community. The latest NBA 2K22 developer blogs cover gameplay and MyTEAM, and we're a little more positive about how the latter is shaping up. Finally, could we see some mods for Basketball Classics in the future?

September 5th, 2021
Episode #392: First Impressions of NBA 2K22 Andrew & Dee4Three

NBA 2K22 is out, and many people are calling it the best NBA 2K game ever. We're not so sure about that, but we do have some initial impressions to share, including lists of pros and cons for Current Gen and Next Gen. An issue with the PC release will also hopefully be sorted out ASAP. The addition of Evan Eschmeyer to the 2003 Mavericks prompts us to share some interesting trivia about his career, and its impact on the virtual hardwood. Elsewhere, the NBA Live 10 Tournament rolls on with some exciting games, and NBA 2K14 continues to be a captivating retro kick. In this week's mailbag, we're reflecting on some memorable basketball video game launches, and titles that impressed us from Day One.

September 12th, 2021
Episode #393: Failure to Launch Andrew & Dee4Three

A first round series in the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament concluded with a fittingly competitive contest. On a more unfortunate note, postal delays continue to keep the PlayStation 5 version of NBA 2K22 from reaching one of us, but the other has some further impressions to share. We discuss the state of MyTEAM in this year's game, and provide an update on an issue with the PC version. We also talk about balance, and frustration with criticism being dismissed out of hand. After NBA 2K16 comes up, we're moved to reflect on the history of issues with retro teams, and the Hall of Fame Ratings scale. In a reversal of last week's mailbag, we also talk about the worst basketball game launches, as well as some of the most frustrating mechanics over the years.

September 19th, 2021
Episode #394: You Mean, It's Not Just Us? Andrew & Dee4Three

The Saga of the Missing Pre-Order has come to an end - sort of - which means we have further impressions of NBA 2K22 Next Gen to share! They're mostly positive, though we do have some criticisms of the MyTEAM economy and MyCAREER grind. We also touch on the most recent patches for the game, and discuss a refreshingly honest review that brings up many of the issues we often make a point of covering. From the impact of recurrent revenue mechanics to the reality of 2K fatigue, we're clearly not alone in our views on basketball gaming! A Windows 10 upgrade has also opened up new gaming opportunities with Parsec, including our semi-finals series in the NBA Live 10 Tournament. Finally, this week's mailbag includes suggestions from the community for new classic teams.

September 26th, 2021
Episode #395: Retro Kicks, Lucky Breaks, & Modding Ideas Andrew & Dee4Three

An extended retro kick with NBA 2K14 will soon wrap up, as the end of a season in MyCAREER looms. We reflect on having a new appreciation for the game, and compare the MyCAREER experience to more recent NBA 2K titles. Patch 1.6 for NBA 2K22 Next Gen came close to causing heartbreak, but fortunately a further update seems to have resolved the issue. We share further impressions of this year's game, and recap our adventures in MyTEAM. Super Dunk Shot and Kobe Bryant in NBA Courtside were our games of choice in a recent Parsec session, with both proving to still be fun all these years later. Building off a recent NLSC Forum topic, we also discuss some creative modding ideas for the community to consider.

October 3rd, 2021
Episode #396: A Couple of Franchise Players Andrew & Dee4Three

We were pleasantly surprised when this week's Monday Tip-Off, which discussed the rising cost of MyCAREER, gained some traction on Twitter. There was a lot of agreement, but predictably also some apologist replies, prompting us to respond. Nevertheless, we're grateful that the article resonated with our fellow gamers! We also catch up on the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament, and discuss our recent gripes with MyTEAM in the Current Gen version of NBA 2K22. Elsewhere, a retro kick in NBA 2K14's MyCAREER may be ending, but not before the discovery of a rather nasty bug that some gamers may have overlooked all those years ago. On the bright side, dabbling with MyGM has inspired an overdue return to franchise gaming, which we're both passionate about.

Episode #397: Asking The Big Questions Andrew & Dee4Three

A birthday prompts us to once again reflect on long tenures in the basketball gaming community, and the stigma against gaming as an adult. This leads to us getting a little deep with some handy life advice for our listeners, young and old! After catching up on some modding developments and discussing the end of a retro kick with NBA 2K14, we start to ask each other the big questions; well, the big questions about basketball gaming, anyway. Our conversation covers games we’d give a second chance to, underutilised features, alternate choices for franchise teams, and modding projects we’d undertake given the time and resources. With the FIFA series possibly rebranding, we also consider new titles for NBA Live, and read some suggestions from the community.

Episode #398: Can We Get A Transparency Badge? Andrew & Dee4Three

Despite some technical difficulties, we managed to play the first game in our semi-final matchup in the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament! We also still can't help but wonder about retro modding possibilities for the PS3 version of NBA Live 10, especially with roster files being transferrable between real hardware and the emulator. Elsewhere, one of us has unlocked the NBA Street team in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, but sadly they're not quite as good as one might hope. After following up on a topic from last week by reading out some listener suggestions for re-branding NBA Live, we discuss the controversy surrounding Badges in NBA 2K22 Current Gen. Unfortunately, 2K has once again lacked transparency and tact in addressing the issue. We also make future plans for the virtual hardwood.

Episode #399: NBA Live Mythbusters Andrew & Dee4Three

Following a session with the Xbox 360 version of NBA Live 06 over Parsec, we're compelled to take an in-depth look back at the controversial title. In particular, we take it upon ourselves to bust a few myths regarding the game's quality, and what actually led to its less than stellar reception. We also got NBA Live 09 working over Parsec, and it too made a positive second impression on us. Indeed, we may have found a couple of new retro gaming kicks! In other retro gaming news, it appears as though content for NBA 2K17 may be gone forever; at least if it's installed fresh today. Nevertheless, our advocacy for retro basketball gaming continues, even as we play NBA 2K22!

Episode #400: Just Like We Remembered Andrew & Dee4Three

Welcome to the 400th Episode of the NLSC Podcast! To mark the occasion, we're reflecting on significant milestones in basketball gaming: the developments, good and bad, that shaped the genre. We also profile the infamous NBA Live 07 for Xbox 360. Was it as bad as most of us remember it being? Yes, but it's still interesting to discuss! In this week's mailbag, we provide further thoughts on the dunk meter in NBA 2K22 Next Gen. We also pick up where we left off in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition's Road Trip, nominate games that we'd like to see re-made, and list our favourite teams to play with over the years.

Episode #401: A Double-Edged Sword Andrew & Dee4Three

We have our likes and dislikes when it comes to NBA 2K22, but what would someone who hasn't played the series in over ten years think of it? We have an answer from the community, leading us to discuss bad first impressions. Of course, first impressions don't always last, thanks to the abundance of patches and tuning fixes. In that regard, post-release support these days is undoubtedly a double-edged sword. It's also a factor in the ongoing conversation about alleged skill gaps. Meanwhile, a MyTEAM poll has revealed some interesting statistics regarding NBA 2K's demographics that suggest we're not that old after all. We also discuss playing NBA Live 06 for Xbox 360 co-op over Parsec, the addictiveness of grinding, and some of the community's Virtual Hardwood Legends.

Episode #402: Winners Don't Quit Andrew & Dee4Three

NBA Live 19 still has an active online scene, but sadly it displays similar toxicity to NBA 2K's community. We dissect the issue of poor online sportsmanship, and lack of competitiveness in what is supposedly a competitive environment. While we're in the mood for callouts, we also respond to some recent comments that were unnecessarily snarky. On a brighter note, our second attempt at a co-op game in NBA Live 06 for Xbox 360 over Parsec has us pumped to dive into a Season. Elsewhere, Take Two's attitude towards Grand Theft Auto modders has us wondering if we should be worried about our own modding community, especially with 2K understandably cracking down on MyCAREER hackers. In this week's mailbag, we're reflecting on games that we wish we could've personally modded, or downloaded mods for.

Episode #403: These Labours Of Love Andrew & Dee4Three

The second game of our Semi-Finals series in the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament was marred by some technical issues, but we had much better luck with other games during a Parsec session. We recap one of the wildest games of NBA Jam Tournament Edition that we've ever played, using a fantastic 2014 season roster mod. Another highlight came when we revisited the PC version of NBA Live 96, and couldn't help gushing about the presentation. Double Dribble also got a run (CORNER THREE!), though it did show its age. In this week's mailbag, we discuss the arguments for and against paid mods, and how to avoid burnout when working on big modding projects.

Episode #404: Cheese Not Found Andrew & Dee4Three

The second game of our Semi-Finals series in the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament was marred by some technical issues, but we had much better luck with other games during a Parsec session. Episode #405: Slow Motion, Signature Style Andrew & Dee4Three

An eye-catching statistic regarding the Lakers this year, and some other recent NBA observations, explain a lot about The Rec (and why we're happy to avoid the online scene). Unfortunately, even the franchise experience in NBA 2K22 hasn't been appealing, due to the gameplay feeling dry. On the plus side, NBA 2K17 has been fun to dust off, and it leads us to reflect on one of our all-time favourite basketball video games. We once again note that gameplay mechanics aren't automatically good just because we're able to get used to and master them. Elsewhere, preliminary plans for the next NLSC Tournament have begun, with the community voting on the game. A new roster with fixed retro teams is also worth checking out on PlayStation 5. In this week's mailbag, we're talking about slow motion dunks, signature moves, and other old school features that we miss and would love to see return.

Episode #406: What A Croc! Andrew & Dee4Three

Crocs have been added as footwear in NBA 2K22's MyCAREER, and we're...underwhelmed. This leads us to discuss 2K's priorities, and how we'd prefer that they make fairer deals with historical players, not to mention finally license some prominent absentees. Voting has closed on the game for the next NLSC Tournament, and one of us may have put our hand on the scales. While we've been enjoying playing a variety of older titles as of late, certain games do make us miss enhancements from newer releases. To that point, we reflect on how it took an unusually long time for NBA 2K to adopt right stick dribbling controls, and an overlooked mechanic in NBA Live. We also cover some recent retro roster modding developments, and resolve to keep playing the games that we  find the most appealing in 2022.

Episode #407: Christmas Special 2021 Andrew & Dee4Three

It's our 2021 season finale, which means it's time for a (slightly belated) Christmas special! We recap our recent Parsec sessions, which featured NBA Live 99 and NBA in the Zone 2. There's also a matter with the Top 10 Plays of the Week that we feel the need to address. After that, it's time for the listener mailbag! This week, we join our listeners in sharing some of our favourite Christmas-related basketball and basketball gaming memories, and special moments playing with friends and family. In the spirit of the season, it seems that the virtual hardwood has brought many of us closer to the people we love.
