NLSC Podcast #491: A Tipping Point for Microtransactions

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #491 of the NLSC Podcast!

Two tiers of Season Passes have been confirmed for MyTEAM and MyCAREER in NBA 2K24. Needless to say, it was a controversial announcement! This week we’re taking a deep dive into the issue, examining the potential impact on the game, as well as Take-Two’s history of aggressive recurrent revenue mechanics. We also read out comments from community members; it’s not a spoiler to say that we’re not alone in being unimpressed by the adoption of Season Passes for premium content! Meanwhile, content creators that shill for greedy business practices seem to be getting called out, which we’re glad to see. All in all, NBA 2K24 could prove to be a tipping point for microtransactions in the series!

Thank you for the show and this episode from a regular listener (was off for 2y#, though)! Played 2K13’s MyTeam on PS3 with joy, 2K14’s one (X1) was satisfactory demanding, 2K15’s (X1) Domination became beyond my capacity to keep on without spending, so it became the last one 2K for me. I boot up 2K13 on Wii U still. 🙂

Love the podcast. Andrew is the original OG of NBA Live and NBA 2K. I’ve been playing since Live 95 also. Stopped in 2023 cold Turkey because of the absolutely egregious misery of VC and micro transactions. Every single year, it took me 100 hrs to get to 90. My wife just tells me to pay the money, which I can afford. But it’s the principle of it.

Every single part of this game is tailored to extract the most money from you. Last year was the final straw when they flat out killed 2k22’s City the same day as 2K23 came out. It was completely empty and I KNOW every single year, not everyone migrates immediately. They just want to force you to buy the new game.

I’m done. At age 47, it’s time I gave this up.
