NLSC Podcast #521: No NBA License? No Problem!

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #521 of the NLSC Podcast!

Could an unlicensed basketball video game possibly provide a viable alternative to NBA 2K, assuming that it had great gameplay, deep customisation and sharing options, a robust franchise mode, and a price tag of $39.99 USD? This week, we join the community in discussing this very intriguing idea, while drawing comparisons to old titles such as World League Basketball and other unlicensed sports games. It’s safe to say that there’s interest in the concept, but certainly some valid concerns as well. We also take a look back at NBA 2K8 for PlayStation 3 following a co-op Parsec session that sadly ended far too abruptly, and share an encouraging injury update with our listeners.

This was a episode that i was pumped up for, unlicensed NBA game!
This takes me back to my PES days for sure.

A few things first, PES didnt die out because of lack of licences, some listerner/forum member/X user claimed it did.
PES died out because Konami killed it of and went down the FUT/MYTEAM route.
Online pay to win business model.
Which is still a trauma for us PES players.

PES was always the more “sim like” fottball game vs FIFA, especially around PES 2020-2021 VS FIFA 2020-21 and also with the first games coming out around 1999-2000.
Still a very strong gaming community although the game is dead.

Was it moddable in every way possible, you bet!
On consoles like PS3-4 XBOX 360 you could import option files/patches/kits/rosters from a huge PES community, XBOX one on the other hand, was a no go, but you had the in game editor for that, not the same thing, but still you could edit most things there.

On PC every little thing could/can be modded, including competitions/leagues, PES lost The Champions League rights in 2018, no problem for the community, they fixed it for us.
The PES i play the most (PES 2017 PC ) has it all via patches, 100+ stadiums, correct kits etc etc.

so not trying to put one past Dee here, just informing (hope you take it that way) but PES is still and was then a very moddable game and a huge game still for all of us football fans out there.

also a member of Evo-Web (evoweb.uk) just browse their PES section and editing section youll get an idea of how big and alive it still is.

Great episode guys, love that youre pushing out quality week in and week out
And yes id buy a non licensed game in a heartbeat to finally play some EuroLeague

Sure is, and the way 2k goes on now that Live is dead , pretty much the same as EA does with its EA FC.
Think we really need a competition.
Will it happen? dont think so though

Id take what NBA Live ended with, perhaps with a better NBA package if it came back, dont think NBA Live 19 was a very good game on the NBA side of it, but good enough.
Yeah we need a competition.
Would be a good step if EA released some of their older games, lets say NBA Live 10 remastered.
Know it will never happen, but would be great if, and too bad a game like that isnt on Pc

So strange/underwhelming that theres only one football/soccer/Hockey/basketball game nowadays.
