NLSC Podcast – Episode #68

It’s that time of the week again. Join Arcane, JaoSming and myself for Episode #68 of the NLSC Podcast, where we recap the 2014 NBA trade deadline, discuss its impact on this year’s video games, talk about a new(ish) modding breakthrough and more.

  • The trade deadline has come and gone. NBA 2K14’s rosters have been updated, but NBA Live 14’s have not. We talk about the issues with NBA Live 14’s roster updates and reflect on EA’s good track record with NBA Live 09 and NBA Live 10.
  • What are some of the  features that we miss from previous NBA Live and NBA 2K titles? When do we think we’ll see some of them again, if ever?
  • On a similar note, today’s games are fully featured, but are they truly deep, well-rounded and varied experiences?
  • JaoSming talks a little about a new update for NBA 2K14 that actually modifies the game’s animations.
  • We run down all of the deadline trades and commiserate our ill-fated predictions. Also, is being bought out the new “dealt at the deadline”?
  • Raymond Felton adds to the New York Knicks’ embarrassment this season.
  • Bill Simmons was allowed to call last week’s Boston Celtics/Los Angeles Lakers game. It was far more entertaining than the game itself.
  • We wrap up the episode with a couple of other news items from around the NBA.

Glad you are enjoying my animation patch, but I want to say something, the patch I made is much more complex than moving things around or using animations that were not used. Some of the animations are actually imported from older games (and adapted to this year’s animation format because they are not fully compatible), Gilbert Arena’s sigshot or last year’s Kobe shot weren’t in the siganims file, as an example. So, I don’t like to hear that this isn’t something new because terrybgood/johndoe already did it in 2K10. Did he cut part of animations? Did he imported animations from older games that needed to be adapted? Of course the tutorial that Jao made was a good way to start investigating the animation file, but my work is not only about moving things around, to take out all the duplicated animations you need to edit the animation’s assigment. Yes, my patch is about animations assigments too, and that’s why I usually say that I am not in the mood to edit dunks because it’s needed to edit the .exe file, why I need to edit the .exe if my patch is only about moving animations? That’s because any new animation need some parameters to be set, at least if you want to do it the best way, and dunk’s parameter are set in the .exe file.

As of right now, the only way to play with updated rosters in NBA Live 14 that I know of is to play the NBA Rewind mode in a recently played game. They use the exact rosters of the players who played in the game. I’m not sure, but I think they updated the player attributes too.

Maybe talk about other games? It doesn’t seem like there’s much stuff to talk about at this point about the current NBA games. I’d like to hear Jaos’ take on Next Car game and what ever else you guys are playing. Also the experience with the new consoles.
