NLSC Roundtable: All-Star Weekend in NBA 2K13

As most of you are probably now aware, NBA 2K13 will be the first basketball video game to offer the NBA All-Star Weekend as a pre-order bonus for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, rather than a standard feature for everyone out of the box. While there has been no word yet on how users who play NBA 2K13 on other platforms or do not pre-order the game will be affected by this promotion, we can’t help but think how more of the additional teams, modes and features that basketball video game players have taken for granted over the years may be restricted to pre-order bonuses or pay-for downloadable content in the future.

The following is a roundtable reaction by JaoSming, Pdub, Qballer, Leftos and myself to the news and some thoughts on what it could mean for future games. Read on for our impressions of the big announcement.

New NBA Live, NBA 2K & NBA Jam Portals Launched

NLSC Logo - Stitching

As you may have seen over the past day or so, we’ve launched new portals for the games we cover in the NBA Live, NBA 2K and NBA Jam series. This has been done to cut down on the size of our menus and better streamline our content.

You can find the portals under the Games menu on the left hand side of the site. Every portal contains links to the content we have available for each game such as downloads, resources in the Wiki and Forum sections, as well as a small sample of the latest news posts and feature articles relating to a particular game.

We hope that you like the changes and that they will make it easier and more efficient to browse the NLSC and find the content that you’re interested in.

NBA 2K13’s All Star Weekend Pre-order Bonus

As initially reported by Kotaku, it looks like the three point and slam dunk contests are returning to the NBA 2K series via a pre-order bonus.  Amazon’s NBA 2K13 page states:

Pre-order NBA 2K13 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and get access to NBA All Star Game content including the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest, Three Point Contest, Rising Stars Challenge Game, and the NBA All Star Game.

Kotaku is following up with 2K to find out if those who do not pre-order the game will be able to play the All-Star game. It is also unknown how the PC version of NBA 2K13 will be affected, since NBA 2K12’s pre-order bonus and DLC were never available for that version.

What do you think about this pre-order strategy? Let us know in the comments or in this Forum thread.

NBA 2K13 Announcement Coming Tomorrow

After previously hinting at a big announcement for NBA 2K13 that he anticipates will impress hardcore fans, 2K Sports’ Community Manager Ronnie 2K has posted a note on his Facebook page revealing that the announcement will be coming tomorrow. He has also confirmed via a Tweet that the big announcement is not the cover player for this year’s game.

What do you think the announcement might be? Leave a comment below with your thoughts and join in the discussion here in the NBA 2K13 section of the NLSC Forum.

New NBA 2K12 Official Roster Update (May 25th) Now Available

A new official roster update for NBA 2K12 is now available, containing updated rotations for the remaining playoff teams accurate as of May 25th 2012. As always, the update will come through automatically as long as your PC, Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 is connected to the Internet and your game is up to date with the official patch. Use the Reset Roster function under the Options menu to access the new rosters.

PC users who would like to update their game manually for whatever reason may download this pack, which I’ve updated with a copy of the latest roster and online data files. If you haven’t picked up the official fix yet, you can find it in the same section as the official roster pack. Be sure to download the correct patch for the version of the game you’re playing.

NBA Live 13: What We Know So Far

With E3 likely to bring more substantial news on NBA Live 13, I thought I’d take a moment to give a rundown of what we know about the game so far and offer a few of my thoughts on the details that have emerged to date. Over the next week or so in the lead up to E3, I’ll also be posting some more of my thoughts on what I’m hoping to see in this year’s game, as well as what I think we’re likely to see.

We’re looking forward to bringing you some great info during this year’s “preview season” here at the NLSC in the form of Q&As and more, so stay tuned for that stuff in the coming weeks. For the moment though, let’s take a look at what’s already been revealed and what it should mean for NBA Live 13.

Take-Two Confirms NBA 2K13 Release Date, Platforms

Take-Two Interactive has confirmed the previously reported release date for NBA 2K13, as well as the platforms it will be available on. The game will indeed hit stores on October 2nd 2012 and will be released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation Portable and PC. This is obviously excellent news for the growing NBA 2K modding community and should hopefully allay any lingering concerns about the future of the series on PC.

EA Sports have not yet confirmed the release date for NBA Live 13, however based on previous years it is highly likely that it will be coming out the same day. The platforms that NBA Live 13 will be available on also remain unconfirmed at this time, with some pre-order listings suggesting versions for the PC and Wii along with the expected Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases, while others only have 360 and PS3 listings. We hope to have more info soon, needless to say many of us here at the NLSC are hoping that this is the year that the series returns to the PC platform.

Interview with NBA Live 13 Creative Director (MyNBALivePad) has posted an excellent interview with NBA Live 13’s Creative Director, Jason Barnes. The interview primarily talks about the new development team’s approach to authenticity in NBA Live 13, while also touching upon Jason’s basketball background and enthusiasm for the sport. For anyone who may still be concerned that NBA Live 13 will be an arcade style game in the vein of NBA Jam, Jason reiterates that the series will remain a simulation title that will strive for realism.

The interview also covers ESPN branding and presentation in NBA Live 13, with Jason mentioning some of the steps they have taken to recreate ESPN broadcasts in this year’s game. It’s well worth checking out, so be sure to give it a look. Feel free to post your thoughts in the comments below and join in the discussion here in the NBA Live 13 section of the NLSC Forum.
