The Friday Five: My Top 5 BIG Moments in NBA Live 14 (So Far)

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

One of my favourite features in NBA Live 14 is LIVE Season’s BIG Moments. For the uninitiated, BIG Moments allows you to replay significant moments from the 2013/2014 NBA season, ranging from just a few seconds to an entire half of gameplay. As gamewinning shots and memorable performances occur in real life, we see them appear as challenges in NBA Live 14.

As I noted on the NLSC’s Facebook and Twitter, Gerald Green’s career game in the Phoenix Suns’ big win over the Oklahoma City Thunder yesterday seems like a good candidate to appear as a BIG Moment in NBA Live 14. That got me thinking about some of my favourite BIG Moments thus far, which ultimately resulted in a countdown for this week’s Friday Five. So, without any further ado, here are my Top 5 BIG Moments in NBA Live 14…at least to this point.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #69

We’re a little light on basketball video game news this week, but there’s plenty going on in the NBA to talk about. Join Arcane and myself for Episode #69 of the NLSC Podcast!

  • NBA Live 14 has received a post-trade deadline roster update, but it’s a few days out of date.
  • We’re collecting feedback for our NBA Live 15 Wishlist. Start posting your ideas and suggestions ASAP!
  • A few noteworthy players have been bought out and subsequently picked up by other teams. We give our thoughts on those late season signings.
  • We also take a quick glance at some recent winning and losing streaks, while expressing our support for former Australian Boomers head coach Brett Brown in his current gig with the Philadelphia 76ers.
  • LeBron James had a big night with 61 points, though Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins wasn’t as impressed as others were by the performance. Do we agree with the Human Highlight Film?
  • Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash may be done for the season. Should they even consider returning at this point?
  • New NBA commissioner Adam Silver had some interesting things to say at the 2014 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. We comment on some of his ideas.
  • We wrap up this week’s show with some talk about the games we’ve been playing lately, basketball or otherwise.

Click Play to listen to the show!

As always, we welcome your thoughts on this week’s show, as well as any of the topics we discussed. Feel free to hit us up in the comments below, as well as in this thread in the NLSC Forum. We also invite you to send in your mailbag submissions and topic suggestions here.

NBA Live 15 Wishlist Thread Now Open

We’re now in the process of compiling our Wishlist for NBA Live 15, to send in to the NBA Live Development Team at EA Tiburon. After talking to a couple of the developers, we’ve changed up the format a little this year, so that we can provide the best and most comprehensive feedback possible.

We’re asking that everyone post their top ten wishes/suggestions for the game (15 at the very most), elaborating on any points as necessary. Remember, simply saying things like “better gameplay” doesn’t tell the developers what we want to see fixed and improved upon.

Check out our NBA Live 15 Wishlist thread here in the NLSC Forum for more details, and start posting your feedback ASAP!

The Tuesday Triple: How 2K and Live Switched Places

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

With the return of competitive releases in the simulation basketball video game genre, we can once again take part in the age-old tradition of comparing and contrasting the main two NBA games against each other. While NBA Live 14 still plays like an NBA Live game, and NBA 2K14 is still very much a stereotypical NBA 2K game, I have noticed some old complaints from years ago that have seemingly swapped sides. While there are certainly more important compliments and criticisms that can be given to each game, lets take a look at some that have been traded between the competing franchises.

March 3rd Official Roster Update for NBA 2K14

New official rosters have come through for NBA 2K14 on all platforms, featuring lineups that have been updated through March 3rd, 2014. A couple of recent transactions such as the Chicago Bulls’ signing of Jimmer Fredette and the Charlotte Bobcat’s buyout of Ben Gordon are not reflected, though some injuries and ratings have been updated.

As always, the new rosters will come through automatically as long as your PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One is connected to the Internet when you start up NBA 2K14. PC users may alternatively update their game manually with our offline pack, which contains the latest roster and online data files.

Dumb Fact Monday: NCAA Stadiums in an NBA Game

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

One of my favorite things about getting the PC version of our yearly NBA games is to see what hidden or unused content got left on the game disc. Sometimes there is nothing useful, but NBA 2K10 provided the community with a bunch of hidden files that, along with the initial release of REDitor, kickstarted NBA 2K modding on PC. Hidden in the thousands of game files were a few college gyms that had no business showing up in the yearly NBA 2K game.

February 28th Official Roster Update for NBA 2K14

New official rosters are available for NBA 2K14 on all platforms, featuring lineups that have been updated through February 28th, 2014. A couple of transactions that have only just been announced are not accounted for, but most of the recent buyouts are included. Player ratings and injuries have also been updated.

As always, you can get the new update automatically as long as your PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One is connected to the Internet when you start up NBA 2K14. Online Support for NBA 2K13 Ending March 31st, 2014

The official 2K Support Twitter account has posted a notice confirming that the NBA 2K13 server will be discontinued for all platforms as of March 31st, 2014. This means that gamers will no longer be able to play ranked online games or Online Association in NBA 2K13.

You can keep up with the current list of 2K Sports games that still have online support on the Server Status page on 2K’s website.

The Friday Five: 5 Best Things in NBA Live 14’s Dynasty Mode

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

As I’ve mentioned several times before, I’m a huge fan of Dynasty Mode, as it’s been my game mode of choice in NBA Live since it was implemented as Franchise Mode way back in NBA Live 2000. Before the game came out last year, I talked about the things that I wanted to see in NBA Live 14’s Dynasty Mode, though I did temper my expectations somewhat as I knew there was much to focus on as the development team looked to relaunch the series.

As it turns out however, I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised by what Dynasty Mode has on offer in NBA Live 14. While there are still improvements to be made, features to be added and elements to be tweaked, the mode has returned fairly well-rounded and with some pleasing additions. As such, this week I’m listing the five best things in NBA Live 14’s Dynasty Mode.
