The Friday Five: 5 Ways We Give Bad Feedback

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! For those of you who haven’t read any of my previous Friday Five columns, this is a relatively new feature where I discuss a range of topics related to basketball video games, the real NBA and other subjects that are relevant to our community, either in list or Top 5 countdown format.

To say that the Internet has had a major impact on video gaming is a grand understatement. One of the ways it has changed gaming is its ability to put developers in direct contact with their customers, giving gamers the opportunity to provide feedback that shapes future releases and aids in post-release support. We basketball gamers have been doing that for some time now, but we don’t always make the best use of the opportunity. These are the things we should avoid doing, the five ways we give bad feedback to basketball video game developers.

2013 NBA All-Star Reserves Announced

The NBA has announced the reserves for the 2013 NBA All-Star Game, as selected by the coaches. The bench for the West will be comprised of Tim Duncan, LaMarcus Aldridge, James Harden, David Lee, Tony Parker, Zach Randolph and Russell Westbrook. The East’s bench will feature Chris Bosh, Tyson Chandler, Paul George, Jrue Holiday, Kyrie Irving, Joakim Noah and Luol Deng.

This year’s game, the 62nd clash between the East and West All-Stars, will be played in Houston on February 17th, 2013. What do you think of the selections? Who are the biggest snubs and who would you leave off the All-Star rosters? Have your say in the comments below, as well as in this thread in the NBA & Basketball Talk section of the NLSC Forum!

January 24th Official Roster Update for NBA 2K13 Out Now

A new official roster update for NBA 2K13 has come through today, with lineups updated through January 24th, 2013. It doesn’t include any ratings updates but does notably remove the Acrobat signature skill for all players who had it previously. It also updates the injury status for various players who are either out of action or returning to action, such as Lou Williams and Manu Ginobili, and includes the recent Cavaliers/Grizzlies trade. You can check out a detailed analysis of the latest roster here.

As always, the new roster will be pushed through automatically as long as your PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Wii U is connected to the Internet. I’ve also added the latest roster and online data files for the PC version to our manual update pack, for users who would prefer to update their game manually.

NBA Jam: On Fire Edition Receives New Roster Update

NBA Jam: On Fire Edition has unexpectedly received a new roster update for the 2012/2013 season, reflecting the latest transactions and adding some of this year’s rookies. The new rosters come as a welcome surprise, as my previous inquiries into the possibility of getting new rosters for the game indicated that no updates were planned.

Newly added rookies include Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, Bradley Beal and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, though as with the players added in last year’s updates, their names aren’t called by Tim Kitzrow. There are also a few errors in the update as Jason Kidd is still on the Dallas Mavericks’ roster and a couple of the unlockable legends are one of the two default players for their respective teams.

To download the new rosters, simply go to the Online Arena from the main menu; obviously, your Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 must be connected to the Internet to do this. The game will then automatically check for and download the new update, along with all the required art assets. Feel free to post your thoughts on the update in the comments below and discuss NBA Jam: On Fire Edition in The Virtual Hardwood section of the NLSC Forum.

New Orleans Officially Announces Name Change, Unveil Pelicans Logos

The New Orleans Hornets have officially announced that they will be changing their name to the New Orleans Pelicans as of the 2013/2014 season. They also unveiled their new primary logo, partial logo and three secondary logos, which confirmed that the previously leaked design was indeed accurate.

In the wake of their name change, it’s being reported that the Charlotte Bobcats are making inquiries about purchasing the Hornets’ name, though nothing is imminent. With the sale of the Sacramento Kings, who will likely become defunct to resurrect the Seattle Supersonics, the Hornets becoming the Pelicans and the Bobcats possibly becoming the Hornets, it’s certainly an interesting time in the NBA. What are your thoughts? Sound off in the comments below and join in the discussion here in the NBA & Basketball Talk section of the Forum!

2K Sports pushed through a new official roster update for NBA 2K13 yesterday, containing updated starters for the East and West All-Stars and Black History Month colourways for the Kobe 8, LeBron X and KD V shoes. NLSC Podcast – Episode #14

The fourteenth episode of the NLSC Podcast is now online for your listening enjoyment! Leftos, Ben and I are your hosts once again and despite it being a slow news week, we find a few things to talk about including the selections of the All-Star starters, what we’ve been watching recently and a few other odds and ends. If you’re after a quick synopsis:

  • In honour of the Manti Te’o saga, we welcome everyone and their fake girlfriends to this week’s show!
  • It’s been a slow news week, but we give a quick rundown of some stories of note.
  • Leftos has a message for Lance Armstrong.
  • The NBA All-Star starters have been announced. True to form, I momentarily forget who was voted in on the East.
  • We talk a little about fan voting, All-Star games in years gone by and the Rising Stars Challenge.
  • Which reserves do we think should be selected by the coaches for the All-Star game?
  • Some gaming rumours are briefly discussed.
  • Which TV shows have we all been enjoying (or at least watching) as of late?

Click Play to listen to the show!

This week’s episode is actually shorter than recent podcasts as we’ve been taking some feedback on board and are looking to put out a tighter show with a more compressed news segment and fewer “monologues”. We hope you enjoy the latest episode, if you have any constructive feedback about the format and current approach we’re taking, or any thoughts on what we discussed in this week’s show, please feel free to have your say in the comments below or here in the Forum.
