NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #174 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! The release of NBA 2K17 is getting closer and closer, and once again we’ve got a significant amount of news to cover. We also have some stories to share about the latest exploits of the NLSC squad in 2K Pro-Am, and a trip down memory lane with NBA 2K12.

On this week’s show…

  • We tip things off with a discussion about The Prelude, the downloadable experience for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of NBA 2K17 that will preview MyCAREER.
  • A recent 2K media day has given us quite a bit of information about NBA 2K17, and a lot of it is very good news. A lot of positive impressions are also coming out of the recent community event.
  • At last, we have our first deep-dive developer blog, courtesy of Gameplay Director Mike Wang! The man they call Beluba has given us some very promising information about this year’s game.
  • How optimistic and hyped are we for NBA 2K17, just a couple of weeks away from the Early Tip-Off Weekend?
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: a goal is achieved by the NLSC squad in 2K Pro-Am. Also, some unfinished business is finally completed in NBA 2K12.
  • We wrap up another episode with our new favourite game, Trivia Time! The score is close, and we have a fresh new batch of questions for at least the next six weeks.

Tons of NBA 2K17 News (via Operation Sports)

Andre Drummond shoots the basketball in NBA 2K17

Mike Lowe of Operation Sports had an opportunity to visit Visual Concepts’ studios this week, where he received an advanced sneak peak at NBA 2K17. He’s been able to share a lot of juicy information about this year’s game, in a post that you can read here over on OS.

There’s far too much information for me to summarise in just a few points, and I don’t want to just flat out copy and paste an entire article, so be sure to check out OS for the full scoop. However, a quick overview of some of the highlights is as follows:

  • There’s been a huge emphasis on enhancing video and audio accuracy in NBA 2K17, from shoes to the commentary team.
  • Blacktop features more customisation options, and improved matchmaking. Matchmaking has also been improved in Play Now Online.
  • Moments cards and Challenges in MyTEAM will be coming through a lot quicker, there will be a prize board, and users can pick a Free Agent card upon starting MyTEAM.
  • MyLEAGUE and MyGM have received under-the-hood enhancements to AI and logic, as well as the addition of protected picks, the ability to start in the 2016 offseason, changes to league rules and the CBA, and much more.
  • MyLEAGUE Online will feature more admin options this year.
  • Custom jumpshots are back, there’s a new off-ball collision system, the post-game has been revamped, and there’s been an emphasis on smooth animations.
  • Team owners in 2K Pro-Am will feature a roster of ten, and the owner doesn’t need to be present to play. However, teams do need to level up to use advanced customisation features.

Once again, be sure to check out Mike’s article over on Operation Sports for all the details. What’s your take on the latest information? Sound off in the comments below, and join in the discussion taking place here in the NBA 2K17 section of the NLSC Forum!

Various Details on NBA 2K17 Features Revealed

NBA 2K17: Draymond Green

We may still be waiting for some deep-dive developer blogs for NBA 2K17, but we have received some interesting tidbits on various features, courtesy of a 2K media day. Andre Voigt, a German journalist, was in attendance and has Tweeted out some details on this year’s game. The Tweets are in German, but both Operation Sports and NBA2K4Life.com have provided translations. Some of the key points are as follows:

  • There will be dynamic commentary booths, with a total of eleven commentators supporting the main team. The commentary teams will change depending on the city you’re in.
  • Shoes have been 3D scanned, and all 30 NBA arenas have had their sounds individually recorded.
  • Blacktop will allow gamers to set their own rules, and features player introductions. Blacktop has also been added to MyTEAM.
  • MyTEAM features re-designed cards, six new gem levels, and bonuses for dynamic duos.
  • MyLEAGUE Online has been expanded to 80 seasons, the same as the offline MyLEAGUE.
  • Jersey retirements, pick protection, and advanced rotations have been added.
  • Over 700 new animations have been added in NBA 2K17.
  • We can expect new offensive sets, and enhanced coaching AI. A “Smart Coach” feature also offers recommendations from the Assistant Coach.
  • The owner will now control the roster in 2K Pro-Am, and the squad can play without the owner. Stats are also saved, and there will be three levels (Amateur, Pro, and Elite). The Elite level will even feature sponsors that earn additional Virtual Currency.
  • There will be an NBA 2K17 All-Star Tournament, with cash prizes and tickets to All-Star Weekend up for grabs.

Once again, these details have yet to be officially revealed to the public via developer blogs and the like, but this information has come straight from the source. With that being said, what do you think of these tidbits? Have your say in the comments section below, as well as join in the discussion in this thread in our NBA 2K17 Forum.

Monday Tip-Off: Stephen Curry Layup Glitch in NBA 2K16

Stephen Curry with the layup in NBA 2K16

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games.

A few weeks ago, I talked about having fun with glitches in basketball video games. I posted a video of an amusing glitch that occurred while performing a mid-air adjustment with Stephen Curry’s layup package, which saw the ball zoom off the screen before dropping straight back down and through the hoop for two. Since then, I’ve been able to trigger the glitch on more than one occasion. Quite often, the result is just an unrealistically high arcing adjusted shot, but a few times the ball has once again rocketed off the screen, presumably into the rafters.

To date, I’ve only encountered and tried to trigger the glitch while shooting around on Arcane’s MyCOURT, but I’d love to make it happen in a game of 2K Pro-Am, just to see if it does occur elsewhere. Whenever it has happened while shooting around in MyCOURT, I’ve made sure to capture a clip, which has allowed me to put together a short reel that I’d like to share with you today. Watch the compilation below, or check it out here on our YouTube channel if you can’t see the embedded video.

If you’d like to try and trigger the glitch yourself, I’ve had the most success pushing straight up on the right stick to execute one of Stephen Curry’s high arcing layups, and then hitting the Shoot button to perform the mid-air adjustment. However, simply using the Shoot button and pressing it again to adjust the shot has also worked. While glitches like this aren’t exactly what we or the developers are hoping to see, they’re certainly amusing, and fun to try out. As I said, I’d love to make the glitch happen in actual game of 2K Pro-Am. I have to imagine that doing so and making the shot would likely induce a ragequit; perhaps a justified response, in this particular instance.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #173

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #173 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Arcane, Kenny, and I have plenty to discuss this week with a barrage of NBA 2K17 news, some very enjoyable sessions of 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16, and the conclusion of the basketball tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games.

On this week’s show…

  • After a very quiet preview season, the floodgates have seemingly opened on NBA 2K17 news. We begin with a few thoughts on the “Friction” trailer.
  • Hands-on impressions from various media outlets have given us some information about a few of the key changes to gameplay this year. We break down some of the key points, and give our opinions.
  • Does this year’s Achievement list tell us anything about NBA 2K17, specifically the direction of MyCAREER?
  • Player ratings are starting to be revealed, and Karl-Anthony Towns’ 88 Overall in particular has caught our eye.
  • Speaking of Towns, he’s been revealed as the cover player for the MyNBA2K17 app. As hinted at a few months ago, the app will include face scanning capabilities, but unfortunately the PC version has been left out.
  • We reflect on an incident involving basketball gamers and NBA 2K’s community managers on Twitter last week, which rubbed quite a few people the wrong way.
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: a couple of very exciting sessions of 2K Pro-Am, featuring some clutch performances.
  • Following their best ever run, the Australian Boomers fell to Spain in the bronze medal game at the 2016 Olympic Games. We’re certainly proud, but also a little disappointed, not to mention miffed with the officiating.
  • We wrap up Episode #173 of the NLSC Podcast with another edition of Trivia Time!

NLSC Podcast – Episode #172

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #172 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane, Kenny, and I as we discuss all of the NBA 2K17 news that had broken before we started recording, the 2016 Olympics in Rio (specifically the Australian Boomers), and our worst ever session of 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16.

On this week’s show…

  • 2K has been releasing NBA 2K17 screenshots all week, which has given us all something to analyse. What do we make of the screens that have been released so far?
  • What we really want to see, however, is gameplay, and deep dive developer blogs. Once again, we discuss how quiet this preview season has been.
  • On a brighter note, NBA 2K17 will be appearing at Gamescom, which should at least mean more to talk about next week…and shaky, over-the-shoulder footage.
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: We have what is easily our worst and least enjoyable session of 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16, but we’re not ready to give up…yet. Also, more on Arcane’s MyCAREER.
  • LeBron James will remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers, with the largest per-year contract in NBA history. He’s also taken some shots at Michael Jordan.
  • The basketball tournament at the 2016 Olympics in Rio continues to be an exciting one, as the Australian Boomers are in the thick of the medal hunt.
  • We play another round of Trivia Time! This week’s segment highlights the importance of doing the proper research when devising questions.
  • Episode #172 of the NLSC Podcast wraps up with a cool story about Michael Jordan and a passionate fan.

Monday Tip-Off: When Is It Time To Shelve Basketball Games?

DeMarcus Cousins dunks the basketball in NBA 2K16

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games.

Last Friday night, the regular NLSC 2K Pro-Am crew got online to play a few games, as we usually do. As we’ve mentioned on the NLSC Podcast, and in the Forum, our record isn’t exactly stellar across our three Pro-Am teams, but we still enjoy getting in some games each week, picking up the occasional win here and there, and joking around on the party chat. We started our most recent session in high spirits, but after only a few games, we were feeling disenchanted and ready to call it a night.

I’m sure that Arcane, Kenny, and I will discuss it in more detail on this week’s Podcast, but in short, it was one of our worst sessions of 2K Pro-Am. Aside from our own mistakes – and the usual MyPARK cheese that spills over into 2K Pro-Am – we really seemed to be battling some gameplay quirks in all three contests. I can’t speak for the rest of the guys, but when we decided to call it a night early, I found myself wondering if I wanted to keep playing 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16. Mulling that over led me to ponder another question: when is it time to shelve basketball games?

NLSC Podcast – Episode #171

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #171 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! It’s our longest episode in a while as we had a lot to talk about this week, from the first teaser trailer for NBA 2K17, to the Boomers vs. Team USA. Also, some of our favourite memories of Dynasty Mode, and our most recent sessions of 2K Pro-Am.

On this week’s show…

  • The first official teaser trailer for NBA 2K17 has been released. We react to the trailer, and some of us struggle to correctly articulate the name of the US national anthem.
  • On the subject of teasers and news, we also discuss the problem with gaming sites and YouTubers who engage in clickbait, tricking their fellow basketball gamers with fake news and completely unrelated content.
  • Will an increase in video game prices and the rise of microtransactions result in longer development cycles for sports games?
  • What are some of our favourite moments in Dynasty Mode/franchise modes over the years? Which was the best edition of the mode?
  • In our Week in Basketball Gaming: Possible burnout on 2K Pro-Am, and perspective on some of the improvements to shooting mechanics in recent years.
  • The Orlando Magic have unveiled what is perhaps our new least favourite alternate jersey. Bring on the Nike contract!
  • Australia had a fine performance against the USA in the preliminary round of the 2016 Olympic basketball tournament. We’re still picking the USA to win the gold, but are we more optimistic about the Boomers’ chances of winning a medal?
  • We wrap up Episode #171 of the NLSC Podcast with another edition of Trivia Time!

NLSC Podcast – Episode #170

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #170 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Unfortunately, we encountered some technical difficulties with the software we normally use to record the show, and its temporary replacement definitely isn’t as good. Nevertheless, we hope you’ll enjoy another episode in which we discuss the latest NBA 2K17 previews, recap our week in basketball gaming, and play our favourite podcast game.

On this week’s show…

  • Two new NBA 2K17 screenshots have officially been released, featuring Team USA 2016 and the pre-order exclusive 1992 Dream Team. The screenshots are drawing some mixed reactions to say the least, so we chime in with our own critique.
  • Once again, we lament the lack of news about NBA 2K17, which isn’t helping us get hyped for this year’s game from Visual Concepts. Who is directing the MyCAREER story this year? We need to know!
  • For anyone who is still speculating on whether EA is planning on dropping the console version of NBA Live in favour of the mobile platform, their latest investor release mentions a console release for Live in Q1 2017.
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: Bratty behaviour in 2K Pro-Am, and no, not by us. We’re left asking ourselves, is the mode sim enough for our tastes? Also, can’t we all just get along?
  • The basketball tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games will be tipping off soon. Team USA seems like a safe bet for the gold (what a bold prediction!), but what about our team, the Australian Boomers?
  • We wrap up Episode #170 of the NLSC Podcast with this week’s edition of Trivia Time!

The Friday Five: 5 Gripes with Current Gen Basketball Games

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

In many ways, basketball video games are better than they’ve ever been. While there are still quirks with the AI, it’s much smarter than it used to be, with players thinking for themselves and getting into position instead of just standing around. Scanning in faces, jerseys, shoes, and other details ensures that the games look a lot better than their predecessors from a couple of generations ago. We have some really fun and deep modes to play, both offline and online. In short, basketball video games have done some really cool things in recent years.

On the other hand, there is definitely still room for improvement. More to the point, while recent basketball games have delivered some really impressive modes and very enjoyable moments on the virtual hardwood, they do have some aspects that I’m not so thrilled about. I know I’ve discussed some of these issues before, but with new titles on the horizon, they’re once again on my mind. With that being said, here are five gripes that I have with the current generation of basketball video games.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #169

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #169 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! It’s a three man booth once again this week, as Arcane, Kenny, and I discuss the latest NBA 2K17 previews, our recent sessions of 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16, and a few NBA topics.

On this week’s show…

  • As he was out of town for last week’s episode, Kenny gives his thoughts on league expansion coming to MyLEAGUE and MyGM in NBA 2K17.
  • National teams have been confirmed for NBA 2K17, with Team USA and the Australian Boomers being the first squads to be revealed.
  • The final two pre-order bonuses for NBA 2K17 have been confirmed, with one of them being the 1992 Dream Team (Charles Barkley included!). We discuss whether or not it’s a fair move to make content like that pre-order exclusive.
  • We also note that Danilo Gallinari will appear on the Italian cover of NBA 2K17, and give our thoughts on the first official screenshot featuring (most of) Team USA 2016.
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: a rough start for the new NLSC 2K Pro-Am Team – Snoop’s Sliders – and further impressions of NBA Live Mobile.
  • Moving on to some NBA topics, we discuss the NBA’s decision to move the 2017 All-Star Weekend from Charlotte, due to the ongoing issues with the HB2 bill.
  • NBA Legend Nate Thurmond passed away last week. He was before our time, but we still have a few things to say in tribute to the first NBA player to ever register a quadruple-double.
  • If you want to pick up a Kevin Durant Oklahoma City Thunder jersey, there are some excellent bargains going right now that won’t even set you back a dollar.
  • Amar’e Stoudemire has called it a career, so we reminisce about some of STAT’s highlights.
  • We wrap up Episode #169 of the NLSC Podcast with the return of Trivia Time!

The Friday Five: 5 Most Missed Modes in Basketball Games

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

Earlier this week, we received some exciting news about upgrades to the franchise modes in NBA 2K17. MyGM and MyLEAGUE will include league expansion, both modes will feature all kinds of customisation options, and a standalone Playoffs mode is also being added to the game. After expressing my frustration at the prospect of a quiet preview season in this week’s Monday Tip-Off, it was definitely satisfying to see the previews for NBA 2K17 get underway with some very welcome news about the franchise modes, which I’ve traditionally been quite interested in.

While we’re still yet to learn anything about MyCAREER, 2K Pro-Am, or much else about NBA 2K17, I’m expecting another very solid release as far as game modes are concerned. Meanwhile, NBA Live has struggled to provide deep modes since its comeback with NBA Live 14. While LIVE Pro-Am was well-made with a lot of potential for further growth, generally speaking, modes remain a weakness for NBA Live. As I look ahead and hope for improvements in both titles, I can’t help but think about some of the modes that are greatly missed. I would suggest that many basketball gamers would welcome the return of these five modes.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #168

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #168 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Arcane and I are a two-man booth this week, while Kenny is out of town celebrating his 30th birthday. With a lack of meaningful NBA news, it’s a shorter episode, but the past week has delivered us some promising details on NBA 2K17, and an NBA Live 17 rumour.

On this week’s show…

  • After a Monday Tip-Off column lamenting the lack of a preview season, we received a developer blog on the improvements to MyGM and MyLEAGUE in NBA 2K17. We recap all the details, and offer up our thoughts.
  • An interesting rumour is making the rounds regarding BDotADot possibly providing some motion capture for NBA Live 17. Could we see a lot more signature animations, when the game drops in early 2017?
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: A recap of last week’s 2K Pro-Am games featuring NLSC Greatness, recent activities in MyCAREER, and a bargain on a LeBron James card in MyTEAM.
  • We wrap up Episode #168 of the NLSC Podcast with a long-term Bold Prediction by Kenny that turned out to be correct. Unfortunately, he isn’t around to gloat about it.

The Friday Five: 5 Ideas for 2K Pro-Am

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

As you might know if you’ve caught any recent episodes of the NLSC Podcast, I’ve been playing a lot of 2K Pro-Am lately. In fact, I haven’t played much besides 2K Pro-Am in recent weeks, which is unusual as I’m not normally an online gamer. However, as I explained in Monday Tip-Off a few weeks back, I’m really enjoying the social aspect of the mode, and it’s been a fun change of pace from the modes that I usually play. It’s one of the reasons that I’m considering pre-ordering the Legend Edition of NBA 2K17, in order to immediately level up my MyPLAYER.

Needless to say, while I am enjoying the mode, it’s not without its problems. A few weeks ago, I discussed some issues with the grading logic that also affect MyCAREER, which I’d definitely like to see fixed. On top of that, there are some other improvements that I’d like to see made to 2K Pro-Am, five of which I’m outlining in this week’s column. So, without any further ado, here are five ideas for NBA 2K17’s Pro-Am, which I feel would greatly benefit the mode.

The Friday Five: 5 Reasons My MyPLAYER is a Point Guard

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

One of the reasons I’ve always loved the franchise modes in basketball video games is the fact that there’s so much to do. You’re in control of everything, as you play so many roles: coach, GM, and every player on the team. Not having full control is an interesting change of pace however, which is why I’ve also taken an interest in MyCAREER, and more recently, 2K Pro-Am. When I create my MyPLAYER with an eye towards playing those modes, point guard has become my position of choice.

It wasn’t always that way, though. When I was a teenager playing basketball in my local league, I was one of the taller kids, so I played centre and power forward. As a result, I do have an appreciation for (and bias towards) post play, and mixing it up in the paint. I also enjoyed taking the occasional three-pointer once I got better at knocking them down, and Michael Jordan is my all-time favourite player, so my early attempts at MyCAREER were with a MyPLAYER who was a shooting guard. So, what changed, and why do I now prefer to run the point instead?
