Wayback Wednesday: NBA in the Zone Retrospective

Wayback Wednesday: NBA in the Zone Retrospective

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at NBA in the Zone, developed and released by Konami.

The sim-arcade hybrid genre of basketball video games is one that I’ve really come to appreciate in recent years. I didn’t play many of them growing up, as I preferred NBA Live for its more realistic approach to the sim style, and NBA Jam for its definitive arcade experience. While I ultimately still prefer games that are firmly sim or arcade in their style of play, sim-arcade hybrid titles undoubtedly have their place. The best ones strike a fun balance between a realistic depiction of basketball, and exaggerating the action for looser, up-tempo gameplay that takes a few liberties with accuracy.

Because they occupy a middle ground between simulation and arcade games, there are a handful of games that could be considered sim-arcade hybrids. And 1 Streetball is definitely in the conversation, mixing 5-on-5 gameplay with some power-ups and slightly exaggerated dunks. NBA Live 2003’s wackier elements arguably make it a candidate, though it’s still mostly sim at its core. When I think of prime examples of sim-arcade hybrid games though, Konami’s hoops titles are what come to mind, and that includes NBA in the Zone. Let’s take a look back…way back…

NLSC Podcast #510: Street Hoops & NBA 2K League Elitism

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #510 of the NLSC Podcast!

Are the NBA 2K League competitors actually the best NBA 2K gamers in the world? Both we and the community have some thoughts on that, as well as a ridiculous comparison to real NBA players. Meanwhile, a session with Street Hoops by Black Ops Entertainment has revealed it to be a hidden gem, as we had an absolute blast with it! We also discuss the importance of the unwritten rules of sportsmanship in basketball, and thanks to the NBA Live 2001 Legends, reflect on the real and virtual accomplishments of Keith Van Horn. Finally, since we shared our basketball gaming resolutions last week, this week we open up the mailbag to find out what the community has planned for 2024.

This week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays has a strong retro motif, with fun moments from several virtual hardwood classics. Both versions of NBA 2K14 make an appearance, along with NBA Live’s forerunners, Lakers vs. Celtics and Bulls vs. Blazers. There’s also a great self-alley-oop from AND 1 Streetball, a somewhat overlooked game from the PlayStation 2/original Xbox era. And yes, just in case you’re wondering, I totally meant to throw that pass in my contribution to the countdown. Alright, perhaps not, but the important thing is that it worked!

NLSC Podcast #398: Can We Get A Transparency Badge?

Episode #398 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

Despite some technical difficulties, we managed to play the first game in our semi-final matchup in the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament! We also still can’t help but wonder about retro modding possibilities for the PS3 version of NBA Live 10, especially with roster files being transferrable between real hardware and the emulator. Elsewhere, one of us has unlocked the NBA Street team in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, but sadly they’re not quite as good as one might hope. After following up on a topic from last week by reading out some listener suggestions for re-branding NBA Live, we discuss the controversy surrounding Badges in NBA 2K22 Current Gen. Unfortunately, 2K has once again lacked transparency and tact in addressing the issue. We also make future plans for the virtual hardwood.

There’s a familiar motif of jaw-dropping dunks in this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays, but I’m sure you’ll agree that they’re worth watching again and again. On top of that, in addition to all of the NBA highlights, we’ve also got some fantastic plays from College Hoops 2K8, and And 1 Streetball; two games we haven’t seen much of in the countdown thus far. The latter is a title that I’ll be covering in Wayback Wednesday in the not too distant future, but in the meantime, enjoy another selection of exciting highlights from the basketball gaming community!

This week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays features players in a spin, shards of broken backboard, fancy handles, and more than a couple of breathtaking poster dunks! For the second time in the countdown, ten different basketball video games are represented, including a couple of older titles that arguably deserve more love. Some of them will be profiled in Wayback Wednesday in the not too distant future, but for now, enjoy this assortment of entertaining plays from the community!

NLSC Podcast #390: Well, It’s No Garfield Kart!

Episode #390 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

After reflecting on a major milestone, we turn our attention to the new 2K NextMakers program. It’s not something we’re likely to be a part of, and we have our concerns about its effectiveness. Meanwhile, our first game of NBA Live 10 in a few weeks produced one of the most memorable moments either of us have ever experienced on the virtual hardwood. We also continue to marvel at the detail in the last great NBA Live release. Elsewhere, prices are rising for video game collectors, and it’s beginning to affect hoops titles as well. There’s some NBA 2K22 news, but it’s difficult to muster excitement about go-karts in MyCAREER. In this week’s mailbag, we discuss the status of two former NBA 2K developers, and roster inaccuracies.
