The Friday Five: 5 Modes I Haven’t Played Much

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. This week’s Five takes a look at five game modes that I haven’t played much of over the years.

There’s almost too much to do in basketball video games these days. The amount of modes in NBA 2K in particular caters to a wide variety of tastes; whether you prefer competitive online play, card collecting and team building, living the life of an NBA player, or sitting in the GM’s seat, you can find something to play. Needless to say, this is a good problem to have. It makes older titles look even more primitive, and as we move forward, stresses the importance of NBA Live being able to improve upon the depth and variety of its modes.

While it’s a good problem to have, a bevy of deep modes can leave us struggling to get the most out of a title before the next game is released. As I’ve discussed, it’s a problem that’s further exacerbated when there are multiple hoops titles that you want to play. I’ve spent many hours playing basketball games over the years, and I’ve built up a substantial collection of titles. However, I can’t say that I’ve been able to get the most out of all them, or spent as much time with some of the modes as I would have liked. Glancing at the modes in recent games, or looking back at older titles, I can think of at least five modes that I feel I’ve neglected.

Wayback Wednesday: The Dunk Contest in Basketball Games

Tens in the Dunk Contest (NBA Live 2005)

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m taking a look back at the Slam Dunk Contest in basketball video games.

The Slam Dunk Contest is the main event of All-Star Saturday Night, and with the notable exception of the 1998 All-Star Weekend, it’s been a fixture of the festivities since 1984. Although not every contest has been better than the last – and indeed, some years have been downright disappointing – it’s still provided us with many memorable examples of spectacular aerial artistry. It only stands to reason that we want to take part in the dunk contest in basketball video games, and fortunately for us, several titles over the years have afforded us that opportunity.

Implemented in a variety of ways over the years, the dunk contest has proven to be a fun mini-game to jump into whenever it’s been available to play at any time. Along with the Three-Point Shootout, it’s also deepened the franchise and career experiences by representing the most prominent events of the All-Star Weekend. The main event of the NBA’s midseason classic has an interesting history when it comes to the virtual hardwood, so let’s take a look back…way back…

Various Details on NBA 2K17 Features Revealed

NBA 2K17: Draymond Green

We may still be waiting for some deep-dive developer blogs for NBA 2K17, but we have received some interesting tidbits on various features, courtesy of a 2K media day. Andre Voigt, a German journalist, was in attendance and has Tweeted out some details on this year’s game. The Tweets are in German, but both Operation Sports and NBA2K4Life.com have provided translations. Some of the key points are as follows:

  • There will be dynamic commentary booths, with a total of eleven commentators supporting the main team. The commentary teams will change depending on the city you’re in.
  • Shoes have been 3D scanned, and all 30 NBA arenas have had their sounds individually recorded.
  • Blacktop will allow gamers to set their own rules, and features player introductions. Blacktop has also been added to MyTEAM.
  • MyTEAM features re-designed cards, six new gem levels, and bonuses for dynamic duos.
  • MyLEAGUE Online has been expanded to 80 seasons, the same as the offline MyLEAGUE.
  • Jersey retirements, pick protection, and advanced rotations have been added.
  • Over 700 new animations have been added in NBA 2K17.
  • We can expect new offensive sets, and enhanced coaching AI. A “Smart Coach” feature also offers recommendations from the Assistant Coach.
  • The owner will now control the roster in 2K Pro-Am, and the squad can play without the owner. Stats are also saved, and there will be three levels (Amateur, Pro, and Elite). The Elite level will even feature sponsors that earn additional Virtual Currency.
  • There will be an NBA 2K17 All-Star Tournament, with cash prizes and tickets to All-Star Weekend up for grabs.

Once again, these details have yet to be officially revealed to the public via developer blogs and the like, but this information has come straight from the source. With that being said, what do you think of these tidbits? Have your say in the comments section below, as well as join in the discussion in this thread in our NBA 2K17 Forum.
