I love that we still see new mod releases for NBA Live 2005 over twenty years later – indeed, I’d like to join in the fun myself at some point – and to that end, we have another one today as Modders27 has uploaded an updated face for Damian Lillard. Check it out at the link below!

That’s not a headline I ever anticipated using here on the NLSC, but it sums up the recent uploads Dee and I have made to the NLSC YouTube channel! From battling Flavor Flav in NBA 2K6 to some awesome 90s action in NBA 2K10 PC, we continue to have a blast with a variety of titles.

My 1-on-1 game with Flavor Flav in NBA 2K6’s 24/7: Road to the EBC mode was definitely something different! The game has been in my rotation for a while now, and after unlocking Flav’s Rucker Park challenge while getting some screenshots, I knew it would be something fun and unique for the channel. It definitely was a different time in basketball gaming!

Dee’s Blacktop game in the Next Gen version of NBA 2K14 features an array of high flyers, with Gerald Green throwing down a nasty jam that was featured in the NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week. It’s some of the best streetball action that you’ll find in a sim game, in a title that holds up superbly a decade later. Meanwhile, our co-op session with NBA 2K10 PC was a showcase for my recently-released fixed official roster. It was a joy to create highlights with some of our favourite stars of the 90s, including of course Michael Jordan.

Finally, with the 2024 season tipping off, I updated the rosters in NBA 2K14 PS4 – as much as possible – to stage a showdown between the Golden State Warriors with Chris Paul, and the Milwaukee Bucks with Damian Lillard. It was an exciting battle that ended in dramatic fashion, though perhaps not the way I would’ve liked!

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at the players in the default rosters of NBA 2K14 PS4/X1 who are still active as of 2023.

Can you believe that NBA 2K14 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is coming up on ten years old? As I’ve discussed in previous articles and on the NLSC Podcast, it took me a while, but I’ve certainly warmed up to the landmark release! However, while the game itself still holds up extraordinarily well, the snapshot of the NBA that it captures is naturally now quite outdated. A recent perusal of the default rosters made it clear just how much turnover there is in the league over the span of a decade. In fact, some sweeping changes occurred not too long after NBA 2K14’s release!

How many players from the default rosters of NBA 2K14 PS4/X1 are still active as of 2023? Just 73 as of writing, though others were still active as of last season, and may still find a spot in the NBA. When I made a similar comparison with NBA Live 10 back in 2021, only 44 players from the 2010 campaign were still in the league. On top of that, less than 20 players had stints that spanned from the launch of the PS4 and X1 through to the arrival of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Indeed, including a couple that I forgot, only five players are still with the same team a decade later. As we prepare to tip off another NBA campaign, let’s also take a look back…way back…

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #484 of the NLSC Podcast!

The community has spoken: whether it comes from EA Sports, 2K Sports, or indeed both, many of us are very keen to see a new college basketball game! From licensed players and gameplay to presentation and features, we join the community in discussing our expectations for a hypothetical NCAA title. Elsewhere, we’ve noticed a couple of Tweets attempting to rehabilitate NBA 2K18’s image. Naturally, we have a few thoughts on that! We also discuss Damian Lillard’s trade request and big contracts for NBA role players, react to the recent separation of EA Sports and EA Games, and open up this week’s mailbag for some NBA 2K17 Overall Ratings trivia.

Patch 1.03 is now available for NBA 2K21 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. As always, it should come through automatically as long as your PC or console is connected to the Internet. If you run into any issues, try restarting your Steam client or console, or checking for updates manually.

The PC patch is a combined update, as the previous patch hadn’t yet come through. Checking the patch notes for both title updates, the PC version definitely includes all of them. This obviously comes as great news, as it means the PC version isn’t a patch behind. Hopefully there won’t be too many similar delays moving forward.

In addition to the usual technical fixes across various game modes, NBA 2K21 Patch 1.03 lowers the ballhandling requirement for Pro level dribble moves, assigns Park dribbles to a click of the left stick (L3), increases the size of the shot meter, boosts ankle breakers, improves defensive movement, and addresses a Pro Stick exploit (but not the modded controller issue). It also adds a new page to player cards in MyTEAM indicating upgradeable Badges, improves Ball Drop physics, and updates the brackets in Playoffs mode.

The NBA 2K21 gameplay blog for the Current Gen version has been posted, outlining what we can expect from this year’s release. A breakdown of the key points is as follows:

• Beluba reiterated the focus on striking a good balance between realism and fun, once again referring to turnovers on long passes as an example of what they want to avoid.
• Cover player Damian Lillard had several suggestions, including raising the maximum height for point guards in MyCAREER. It’s now 6’8″.
• The Pro Stick controls have changed: Hold down for a jumpshot, hold left or right for escape dribbles, hold up for signature size-ups, tap for quick 1-to-1 dribble moves, tap while holding Sprint for quick momentum dribbles.
• New signature size-ups have been added (for a total of 14 Street and 36 NBA animations), and moves are now more responsive and “chain-able”. Street moves are performed with a tap of the left trigger.
• When shooting with the Pro Stick, the Shot Meter is replaced by target aiming inspired by NBA 2K17’s mechanics. Instead of timing the release, you can use the whole animation to hit the target window. The same mechanics apply to layups, but this can be disabled. There are also new shot types, and over 40 new shot landings for Park.
• Block targeting has been improved, and some of the overpowered paint moves have been toned down. There are also signature defensive styles, and player movement has been refined for more responsiveness.
• The Badge system is basically the same as last year, though it’s been refined based on telemetry data from popular builds. Shot speed has been moved back to the Jump Shot Creator, with the Quick Draw Badge being removed entirely.

Episode #330 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this week’s show.

The three cover players and their editions of NBA 2K21 have been revealed, and it turns out our predictions were pretty good! We react to the choices, and some of the community’s opinions on them. We’ve also discovered that the Next Gen version will have cross-platform VC and MyTEAM progression, but more controversially, a $10 price increase. Breaking down the pre-order bonuses also suggests that the approach to microtransactions and grinding won’t be much different this year. With confirmation that NBA 2K21 PC is a Current Gen port, we weigh up the pros and cons, and what it means for our modding community. Elsewhere, reactions to Madden 21’s Franchise mode have made us wonder about the future of franchise gaming in basketball titles. Finally, we’re noticing some new waves of nostalgia among younger and older hoops gamers alike.

Following on from the Current Gen reveal, Zion Williamson has now officially been unveiled as the cover player for NBA 2K21 Next Gen. Zion was widely expected to be one of the cover players for NBA 2K21 after featuring in the game’s announcement trailer at the PlayStation 5 event in June.

With Damian Lillard and Zion Williamson revealed as the Current Gen and Next Gen cover players, we’re just left with the unveiling of the Legend Edition cover. As I mentioned in the previous bulletin, Kobe Bryant has been a popular pick and sentimental preference for a lot of gamers. With his recent retirement, Vince Carter is also a name that’s been thrown around, and one that we mentioned among our picks in Episode #329 of the NLSC Podcast.

Speaking of Current and Next Gen, it appears as though the PC will remain a Current Gen port this year. Although this is a drawback in many ways, it also means that our modding tools will probably still be suitable for another year. It also means the PC version should be released in October, the same time as on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. No dates for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions have been announced as yet, but it’s safe to say NBA 2K21 will be a launch title for both consoles. Current Gen pre-orders begin July 2nd.

The first cover player for NBA 2K21 has been revealed! Damian Lillard has been announced as the cover player for the Current Gen version of the game. Dame has previously graced the cover of NBA Live 15, as well as the Chinese exclusive NBA 2K Online 2. He is the seventh player to appear on the covers of both NBA Live and NBA 2K.

Pre-orders for the Current Gen version of the game will begin July 2nd, and the game is slated for release in October. As of this post, no details about pre-order bonuses has been released, but that information will likely be coming soon. We can assume that they will be quite similar to last year’s bonuses, except with Damian Lillard-themed content.

With one cover reveal down, we have two to go over the next couple of days. As per ESPN, the next two covers will be for the Next Gen and Legend editions of the game. Zion Williamson has been a popular prediction after being featured in the announcement trailer, while a lot of gamers are picking Kobe Bryant for the Legend Edition.

The official NBA 2K Twitter account has released another NBA 2K19 First Look screenshot, this time featuring Damian Lillard. The man they call Dame previously appeared on the cover of NBA Live 15, but has since become a member of Team 2K, voicing himself in various cutscenes in NBA 2K18’s MyCAREER mode.

As with the other First Look screenshots, Lillard’s Overall Rating in the initial NBA 2K19 roster has been revealed. We now know that Lillard will be rated 90, matching the Overall Rating he had in the final official roster update for NBA 2K18, where he was one of fourteen active players to be rated 90 or more.

2K has released four new NBA 2K18 screenshots, featuring Damian Lillard, Victor Oladipo, Dwight Howard, and Nick Young. For what it’s worth, only Lillard – formerly the cover player for NBA Live 15 – is identified as a member of Team 2K. Howard and Young’s overall ratings have also been revealed, and they are as follows:

• Dwight Howard: 81 Overall
• Nick Young: 74 Overall

As with the previous screenshots, the latest images also give us a peek at the new Nike-designed uniforms. It remains to be seen whether the official reveal of the jerseys for all 30 NBA teams will also open the floodgates on preview media for both NBA 2K18 and NBA Live 18.
