While the offseason has us paying attention to all the off-court moves in the real NBA, the NLSC Top 10 Plays remains all about the moves on the virtual hardwood! The fun times and highlights definitely haven’t stopped with the NBA season, with this week’s countdown delivering smooth ankle-breakers, spectacular dunks, great two-way action, and a unique play at the number one spot that demonstrates why you should never give up on the play! Six different games are featured this week, from NBA 2K6 for PS2 through to NBA 2K26. Let’s get to the action!

It’s time for another round-up of recent uploads to the NLSC YouTube channel! Since the last bulletin, Dee and I have been playing an assortment of games, including NBA The Run, which has produced plenty of highlights. I’m a little behind in uploading some of the videos I’ve had planned, but Dee has been consistently sharing some of our best virtual hardwood moments.

We’ve had a lot to say about NBA The Run before and after its release, and while we have our criticisms, it’s also produced several highlights. In addition to including some of the highlights in the NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week, Dee has been showcasing the gameplay in both the beta and full versions of NBA The Run via a handful of reels.

Some of Dee’s other uploads include highlights from our four and five-player games of NBA Live 95 and NBA Live 96 for Super Nintendo, and four-player head-to-head showdowns in NBA Hangtime and NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, from our Sunday Parsec sessions with wiscard_rush, KidKash202, and KingKongFresh00. You can also find highlight reels from NBA 2K11 PS2, NBA Jam 2004, NBA Live 2000, NBA Live 09, NBA Live 10, and NBA Bounce.

As I mentioned, I’m overdue to share highlights from my solo basketball gaming sessions, but I did upload a preview of the work-in-progress ABA roster for NBA Live 06. It’s a project that I’m aiming to spend more time on during the offseason, with an eye to getting a release out as soon as possible. I also uploaded highlights from a makeshift classic teams showdown in NBA Live 10, featuring the 2006 Nets and Suns.

The 2026 NBA season is now officially in the books, but ball never stops here at the NLSC! Our community loves hitting the virtual hardwood and blacktop in a variety of titles and in all sorts of ways, and that continues to be apparent in this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays. The countdown begins and ends with some spectacular and ambitious highlights from WNBA players, and in between there are poster dunks, big blocks, and other breathtaking moves. 80 years ago today, the NBA – then the Basketball Association of America – was founded at the Commodore Hotel in New York. Appropriately, this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays contains many tributes to the history of the league! From the first Knicks-Spurs NBA Finals showdown in NBA Live 99, to Wemby swatting shots in NBA The Run, to Kobe’s clutch play in his eponymous era in NBA 2K25, the stars from yesterday and today are strutting their stuff across eight different basketball video games in our latest countdown. This week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays is another demonstration of the artistry of the dunk, with players pulling all kinds of tricks out of their bags and putting each other on posters. Things also get a little cartoonish – dare I say looney – with the number one play in the countdown! There’s definitely a street and arcade motif to this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays! Not only are there a couple of highlights from the recent closed beta for NBA The Run, but NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, NBA Jam 2004, NBA Hangtime, and NBA Street. Vol. 2 are also in the countdown. As is often the case, this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays is a fantastic mix of the old and the new. Not only are nine different games on display from NBA Live 10 through to the upcoming NBA The Run, but we’ve got updated rosters in older games, and all-time greats doing their thing in modern releases. It’s the Legends that ultimately have bragging rights this time around though, as Wizards Michael Jordan and Larry Bird demonstrate why they’re two of the best to ever step onto the hardwood, real or virtual. A high-flying highlight from NBA The Run soars into the countdown, courtesy of the closed beta that took place this week. Every entry in the NLSC Top 10 Plays represents a joyful moment playing basketball video games. This has perhaps never been more apparent than in this week’s top play, where you’ll see the Live 01 Legends reacting to an absolutely awesome alley-oop from their showdown in NBA Live 2005! Some minimalist modding is also on display in that highlight, which is always great to see. The rest of the countdown is packed with great dunks, slick moves, and other exciting moments from eight different games ranging from NBA Hangtime to NBA 2K26. Let’s get to the action!

Having had a few roster projects go up in smoke due to burnout over the years, these days I’m sticking to manageable projects for games that I want to play; namely, old favourites. To that end, I’ve been dabbling with a 1976 ABA roster for NBA Live 06 PC – tentatively titled NBA Live ’76 – and I’ve uploaded some highlights from a recent game using the work-in-progress mod.

In the game, I take on the CPU-controlled San Antonio Spurs using the New York Nets. At this time, several players are using placeholder faces, but big names such as Julius Erving and George Gervin do have their actual likenesses. A handful of other players also have proper faces courtesy of retro mods from the archives. Both the Nets and Spurs are wearing their ABA-era jerseys and have the correct throwback logos, though all of the teams in the roster are currently using a generic floor with their respective logos at midcourt.

There’s still a ways to go with this retro roster project for NBA Live 06 PC, but as you can see from the highlights, it’s shaping up nicely! Between the ABA only having eight teams by the end of its 1976 season, the mods in our archives, and placeholder faces, I’m confident that it’ll all come together and be fun to play with. Although the ABA was before my time, it’s a fascinating part of basketball history, and the league is severely underrepresented in video games.

Once again, these days I’m focusing my attention on mods for old favourites that’ll enhance my retro gaming, and projects like this will definitely help NBA Live 06 get back into my rotation.
