Highlights from NBA 2K25, NBA Live 2000, & More

It’s time for another NLSC YouTube roundup! As you may have seen, for Halloween I put together a new Tales from the Virtual Hardwood video, diving into an urban legend involving Jason Collier and NBA Live 06. On top of that, Dee and I have also been uploading highlights from our co-op and individual gaming sessions, featuring NBA 2K25, NBA Live 2000, and other titles.

First of all, there’s a spectacular reel of highlights from Dee and his brother’s ongoing Legends MyNBA in NBA 2K25. The latest reel covers Games 11 through 20, with the likes of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, and Clyde Drexler all doing what they do best.

Dee also put together a reel of the best moments from our game of NBA Live 2000, in which we took on the Indiana Pacers with the Detroit Pistons. It was an unusual game that wasn’t as successful as a majority of our other co-op sessions, but it reminded us of the teams’ interesting lineups, and the brilliance of NBA Live 2000 PC. In case you missed it, we discussed the game in Episode #550 of the NLSC Podcast.

I usually post bulletins whenever I upload a new entry in the NBA 2K14 Retro Series, but I neglected to do so for the latest one. That is of course a 1986 showdown between the rival Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, which ended in dramatic fashion. I’ve already played a few other retro matchups that will be uploaded in the near future.

Finally, Dee and I connected this past week to play NBA 2K13 using the 1996 URB roster. We opted to take on the Atlanta Hawks with the Orlando Magic, and it was a blast playing with young Shaq and Penny! Stay tuned for our discussion of that session in the next NLSC Podcast.

Check out all of those highlights from NBA 2K25, NBA Live 2000, NBA 2K14, and NBA 2K13 below! As always, be sure to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel if you haven’t already, and feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play.

You’ll see a lot of wild and spectacular moments in the NLSC Top 10 Plays, but it’s a safe bet that the #1 play this week is one of the most insane submissions that we’ve ever received! Such a unique moment is almost always guaranteed to take first place in the countdown, but there’s plenty of excitement in the other nine entries as well. From prime Vince Carter doing his thing in NBA Live 2001, to a glimpse of the 2025 season with a Russell Westbrook poster in NBA Live 18, to a ridiculous move from Derrick Rose in NBA 2K11, it’s another exciting Top 10 to tip off a weekend of basketball gaming. Let’s get to the action!

What was your favourite highlight this week? Sound off in the comments below, and once again, get in on the fun by sending us your best plays! Remember, as long as it’s a basketball game, it’s eligible for the countdown. Also, don’t forget to subscribe to us on YouTube for more basketball gaming videos.

Wayback Wednesday: NBA Action

Wayback Wednesday: NBA Action

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at the long-running recap, magazine, and highlight show, NBA Action.

Several years ago now, during a discussion in the NLSC Forum, I saw someone refer to “that awful NBA Action show”. I was quite surprised – shocked even – and ready to disagree! As a young fan in the 90s who eagerly anticipated the latest episode of NBA Action every week, I was puzzled to see it described in such unflattering terms. The more I thought about it though, the more it made sense. It was no longer the show it had once been. There was a new host, and new segments. Most importantly, it didn’t have the same relevance in the digital age.

In short, if you weren’t watching NBA Action before the mid to late 2000s, then you didn’t see the show at its peak. Anyone who is accustomed to getting NBA news and highlights on demand may understandably struggle to see its value. It’d be like trying to convince someone who never watched golden age episodes of The Simpsons that it’s one of the best comedies in history. Like The Simpsons though, NBA Action was a must-watch for me in the 90s, and I’m confident that many basketball fans around my age will say the same. Let’s take a look back…way back…

However, this week’s selection of virtual hardwood highlights is really bringing the goods, with some great variety! Highlights from NBA 2K25, NBA Live 06, & More

It’s time for another NLSC YouTube channel roundup! In case you’ve missed them, here’s an opportunity to catch up on the latest virtual hardwood highlights from Dee and myself, featuring NBA 2K25, NBA Live 06, and other games that have been in our rotation as of late.

As we’ve discussed on the NLSC Podcast, Dee has been playing a ton of NBA 2K25 since it was released, and sharing the highlights on our channel. His most recent uploads include our co-op session taking on the Orlando Magic with the Chicago Bulls using LeBron Era rosters, and head-to-head games against his brother, namely Clippers vs. Timberwolves, Cavaliers vs. Thunder, and a WNBA showdown between the Fever and Sun. He’s also shared a fantastic 12-minute highlight reel from the first ten games in their Legends season.

Dee also put together a highlight reel from our playtesting session with a work-in-progress ABA mod for NBA Live 06. As for me, on Friday I posted a virtual hardwood tribute to the recently retired Derrick Rose. That video features some of my favourite plays using D-Rose in NBA Live 09, NBA Live 10, NBA Live 16, and NBA 2K14.

Watch all of those highlights for NBA 2K25, NBA Live 06, NBA Live 09, NBA Live 10, NBA Live 16, and NBA 2K14 below! At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, the number one spot in this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays features one of the most incredible comebacks that you’ll ever see in a basketball video game! It’s an impressive feat, but the nine entries leading up to that play are jam-packed with excitement as well. We’re talking clutch moments, ankle breakers, huge poster dunks…even a play from the one and only Bugs Bunny that’ll make you forget all about Space Jam: A New Legacy! Five games are featured this week, ranging from NBA in the Zone 98 to NBA 2K25. Let’s get to the action!

The Friday Five: 5 Favourite Derrick Rose Plays

The Friday Five: 5 Favourite Derrick Rose Plays

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five celebrates Derrick Rose by recalling five of his best plays.

As we discussed earlier this week in Episode #548 of the NLSC Podcast, Derrick Rose has called it a career after 15 seasons in the NBA. D-Rose is – as I’m sure many of you are aware – one of my all-time favourite players, right up there with fellow Chicago Bulls alumni Michael Jordan and Ben Gordon. To that end, I’m sorry to see him retire, especially without more fanfare and indeed a farewell tour back with the Bulls. After all of his injuries and with family life ahead of him however, one has to respect him for being at peace with his career, and his decision to walk away.

Obviously, there are some wistful What Ifs when it comes to Derrick Rose. If not for that devastating knee injury in the 2012 Playoffs, I’m sure he would’ve been one of the top stars of the 2010s. Who knows what the Bulls might’ve achieved had he remained healthy, and if they’d acquired some more firepower to support him? While it does sting to think about, I’m also grateful that I was able to see him become an All-Star and MVP, and truly get excited about the Bulls’ chances again as I did in 2011. He was a really fun player to watch – and play with in video games, too – so in honour of his retirement and his 36th birthday, here are five of my favourite Derrick Rose plays!

It’s clear that the community is enjoying NBA 2K25 so far, as it’s establishing a consistent presence in the NLSC Top 10 Plays. This week’s countdown features some clutch plays and poster dunks from the new release, but a handful of old favourites also remain in the rotation. You’ll find Dr. J operating in a work-in-progress ABA mod for NBA Live 06, a project that we discussed in Episode #547 of the NLSC Podcast. There’s also a long bomb from a retro showdown in NBA 2K14, some fancy passing by an NBA 2K13 MyPLAYER, and even the first appearance of the Gameboy version of NBA Jam Tournament Edition. Without any further ado, let’s get to the action!

Even though it’s only been a couple of weeks, it’s clear that the community is already making some fond memories with NBA 2K25. With that being said, several classics are in our rotations, and basketball gamers are also still keenly playing NBA 2K23 and NBA 2K24 while the servers remain online. To that end, this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays continues to spotlight a variety of titles, which produced another dazzling array of dunks, ankle breakers, and a clutch play in a clash of legendary rivals. Let’s get to the action!

Basketball gamers have been coming through in the clutch recently, as this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays has a distinct buzzer beater motif! It’s one of the few plays in basketball that can beat a spectacular dunk, but with that being said, this week’s countdown still features an assortment of exciting jams. Also, despite NBA 2K25 being fairly well-received so far, the classics are definitely still in many hoops gamers’ rotations. Incidentally, that includes a 2008 season title for PlayStation 3 which you’ll read about in Wayback Wednesday later this month. Let’s get to the action!

NBA 2K25 Gameplay Highlights

NBA 2K25 Gameplay Highlights

As mentioned in Episode #545 of the NLSC Podcast, Dee has been showcasing the gameplay in NBA 2K25 with several uploads to the NLSC YouTube channel. A variety of teams and players are on display, along with different experiences; namely, solo, head-to-head, and co-op play. The NBA and WNBA are also both represented.

The very first NBA 2K25 gameplay video that Dee uploaded saw him taking on the CPU-controlled Knicks with the Celtics. He followed this up with a showdown between the Pelicans and Warriors, controlled by Dee and his brother respectively. The game that we recapped in the latest pod, in which we defeated the Kings with the Nuggets, shows off some co-op play over Parsec. As noted, you’ll also find a couple of WNBA reels, including a solo game in which Dee faced the Mercury with the Fever, and a head-to-head game where Dee played with the Mercury and his brother used the Dream.

His latest NBA2K25 gameplay highlights feature another solo game pitting the Bucks against the Trail Blazers. Dee also demonstrates the depth of instant replay in this year’s game with ten different angles on an alley-oop from Jason Williams to Stromile Swift. Please note that all of these reels are from the PC version of NBA 2K25, which is of course a New Gen port.

Check out all of those videos below! NBA 2K25 is out now, and the community hasn’t wasted any time in using it to create highlights for the NLSC Top 10 Plays! Retro gamers shouldn’t worry though, as the classics are still well-represented in the countdown, and will continue to be moving forward. You know what to expect by now: huge dunks, acrobatic layups, clutch plays, slick moves…everything that’ll get you fired up to hit the virtual hardwood this weekend. Let’s get to the action!

2003 Highlights in NBA Live 2003 & NBA 2K17

2003 Highlights in NBA Live 2003 & NBA 2K17

In our most recent Parsec sessions, Dee and I turned back the clock to 2003 in a couple of different ways! As you’ll see from the latest highlights uploaded to the NLSC YouTube channel, we connected to play the GameCube version of NBA Live 2003, and NBA 2K17 PC using Dee’s Ultimate Classic Teams Roster.

The NBA Live 2003 game – which we’ll be discussing in this week’s NLSC Podcast – saw us take on the San Antonio Spurs with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Whenever you flash back to that era, it’s difficult to pass up the opportunity to play out an epic battle of big men, namely Tim Duncan vs. Kevin Garnett. It wasn’t just KG and TD putting on a show though, as David Robinson, Steve Smith, Wally Szczerbiak, Anthony Peeler, and other notable names all contributed highlights.

Dee put together a fantastic project in the Ultimate Classic Teams Roster, and it allowed us to play an extremely authentic 2003 season showdown in NBA 2K17, jam-packed with highlights. We took on Steve Francis, rookie Yao Ming, and the Houston Rockets with an Orlando Magic squad featuring Tracy McGrady, Grant Hill, and an aging Shawn Kemp. The game opened with a jaw-dropping poster from T-Mac, and the great plays just kept on coming after that!

Check out the highlights of these 2003 season matchups in two different games – one from the season in question, one more recent and modded to include those teams – below! As always, be sure to subscribe to our channel for more basketball gaming content, and feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games you’d like to see us play.

NBA 2K19 & NBA 2K8 Retro Highlights

NBA 2K19 & NBA 2K8 Retro Highlights

As another week here at the NLSC draws to a close, I’d like to spotlight a couple of recent uploads to our YouTube channel! In case you haven’t seen them yet – or indeed, if you’d like to watch them again, we won’t mind! – Dee has uploaded some retro NBA 2K19 highlights, while I’ve done the same for NBA 2K8.

More specifically, Dee’s video showcases the 1986 roster mod from Stildo33 and company, as he takes control of the Portland Trail Blazers with a young Clyde Drexler and faces his brother who is using the Philadelphia 76ers with veterans Julius Erving and Moses Malone, and a young Charles Barkley. It was an exciting game with a wild finish, and it’s a great demonstration of a fantastic retro roster mod.

As I noted in this week’s Wayback Wednesday, I didn’t retroactively become a big fan of NBA 2K8 after revisiting it, but the game definitely has its moments. To that end, I’ve put together a compilation of the best plays from a couple of games I played against the CPU, taking on the 80s East with the 80s West, and the 90s West with the 90s East.

Check out those retro highlights from NBA 2K19 and NBA 2K8 below! As always, be sure to subscribe to our channel if you haven’t already, and feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play. We’ll do our best to get them into the rotation, and share the highlights with you!
