NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE Highlights: Sonics vs Jazz

NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE Highlights: Sonics vs Jazz

Things are heating up in Dee4Three and Stildo33’s 1995 MyLEAGUE in NBA 2K19 PC! As recounted in Episode #467 of the NLSC Podcast, their latest clash involved 90s Western Conference powerhouses the Utah Jazz, controlled by Stildo, and Dee’s Seattle SuperSonics.

Entering the showdown, Dee’s Sonics were undefeated in this 1995 NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE, beginning the year on an impressive 24-0 run. The two have had some close battles as of late, and the matchup of Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton vs. Karl Malone and John Stockton set the stage for another intense contest. As you’ll see, both duos were producing highlights, but there were several key contributors as both teams fought to the final buzzer. From signature rim-rattling Reignman slams, to Stockton and Malone running the pick and roll to perfection, to Detlef Schrempf, Kendall Gill, and Blue Edwards chipping in with buckets, this highlight reel is more classic 90s action on the virtual hardwood!

Monday Tip-Off: Enjoying Your Own Mods

Monday Tip-Off: Enjoying Your Own Mods

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with my thoughts on the importance of enjoying your own mods.

While I can still have a blast playing classic basketball games in their vanilla state, it’s a lot of fun to revisit old mods at the same time. That’s something that Dee and I have been doing in several of our Parsec sessions. We’ve revisited NBA Live 98 and 99 with the Legends and Champs rosters that Lutz made more than twenty years ago. We also used some of my old mods, such as the 1996 rosters for NBA Live 2004 and later NBA Live 2001, the current roster pack that also added the Dream Team and Team USA 2012 for NBA Live 06, and a couple of work-in-progress projects.

As I said, all of those games are still fun to play in their default state. However, using those mods made them even more enjoyable, as it was an interesting change of pace from the usual retro gaming experience. Playing Lutz’s rosters for the first time in years, I was once again reminded of how impressive they were, and how the work of our founders and other early modders inspired me to get into the hobby. To that point, as egotistical as it may sound, playing with some of my own old mods led me to think “Hey, I did a pretty decent job with these!” There were also moments that I cringed and wanted to follow up with new releases, but I found enjoyment in my work.

NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE Highlights: Suns vs. Magic

NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE Highlights: Suns vs. Magic

It’s time for some more highlights from Dee4Three and Stildo33’s ongoing 1995 MyLEAGUE in NBA 2K19! As Dee recounted in Episode #466 of the NLSC Podcast, the season continues to be a blast for both of them, and has recently produced some very competitive contests. On top of that, it also contributed an extremely slick highlight by LaPhonso Ellis in last week’s Top 10 Plays.

The latest game features a showdown between the Phoenix Suns with Charles Barkley, Kevin Johnson, and Dan Majerle, and the Orlando Magic with Shaquille O’Neal and Anfernee Hardaway. As you might expect, that resulted in some vicious dunks, breathtaking lobs, and impressive sharpshooting. Although it wasn’t quite as close a battle as some of their other recent games, a fourth quarter push allowed it to be competitive despite a double digit lead early on.

You can find the 1995 season mod for NBA 2K19 here. For more information on connecting and playing games over Parsec, be sure to check out this topic! Don’t forget to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel for more great basketball gaming content, and also check out Stildo33’s channel for additional highlights from this 1995 NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE season with Dee.

NLSC Podcast #466: Puzzling Ratings in NBA Jam TE

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #466 of the NLSC Podcast!

Despite undoubtedly being a classic release, NBA Jam Tournament Edition features some weird ratings. We’re spotlighting some of the most egregious examples, and speculating on how they might’ve come about. Needless to say, Yinka Dare gets a mention! We’ve also got plans for March Modness, which will be tipping off in a couple of days. As we always like to do, we recap our recent sessions on the virtual hardwood, including updates on our progress in MyCAREER and MyLEAGUE. This also leads to a potentially controversial comparison of NBA Live 06 and NBA 2K6 for Xbox 360! In this week’s mailbag, we join the community in sharing our ideal gaming experiences, from preferred modes to how we get set up to play.

NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE Highlights & NBA Live 08 Three-Point Shootout

NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE Highlights & NBA Live 08 Three-Point Shootout

Dee’s latest uploads to the NLSC YouTube channel feature highlights from his ongoing season with Stildo33 in NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE, as well as our Three-Point Shootout in NBA Live 08. The former showcases the fantastic 1995 season mod for NBA 2K19, while the latter demonstrates that despite having a few quirks, NBA Live 08 for PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 had some solid aspects.

In the MyLEAGUE highlights, you’ll see two epic showdowns that went down to the wire. The first game features Dee using the Denver Nuggets against Stildo33’s Orlando Magic, which means some great moments from a young Shaq and Penny, and a sharpshooting display from Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. In the second game, Scottie Pippen and Shawn Kemp have a spectacular scoring battle, as Stildo33 takes control of the Chicago Bulls while Dee continues his campaign with the Seattle SuperSonics.

The Three-Point Shootout also saw a clutch performance from Dee while controlling Ray Allen, as a CPU-controlled Jason Terry made for a worthy opponent. I’d like to think that I acquitted myself well with Ben Gordon, while also demonstrating how great Parsec is when connecting someone in Australia to a host in the United States!

Be sure to tune in to Episode #465 of the NLSC Podcast as we go into our experiences with the Three-Point Shootout in NBA Live 08, and Dee’s ongoing NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE with Stildo33. Don’t forget to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel for more great basketball gaming content throughout 2023 and beyond!

NLSC Podcast #465: A History of Annoying Mechanics

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #465 of the NLSC Podcast!

Another NBA All-Star Weekend is upon us, but sadly, the event has basically lost its lustre for us. Call us grumpy old heads if you must, but we miss genuine competition in the midseason classic! On a brighter note, we had a blast partaking in All-Star activities in NBA Live 08 – including creating a 1988 dunk contest video, and enjoying a wild three-point shootout that went to a tiebreaker – as well as revisiting NBA 2K13 to play some Blacktop. As promised on last week’s show, we’re taking a deep dive into the most annoying mechanics in the history of basketball gaming, with our listeners also sharing their biggest frustrations on the virtual hardwood.

MyLEAGUE & MyCAREER Highlights

MyLEAGUE & MyCAREER Highlights

As Dee and I discussed in Episode #464 of the NLSC Podcast, we’ve been keeping busy playing through seasons on the virtual hardwood. To that end, Dee has uploaded highlights from his NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE with Stildo33, while I’ve shared a reel from a game in my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER

Dee’s video features him using the Miami Heat to take on Stildo33 and the Orlando Magic. The pair are playing through a season using the 1995 mod for NBA 2K19, which is available to download here. For those who are unaware, Stildo33 is using the Magic while Dee is helming the SuperSonics, and they take turns playing as each other’s opponent throughout the season. The latest reel of highlights from their NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE features some fantastic dunks by Harold “Baby Jordan” Miner, and a young Shaquille O’Neal likewise punishing the rim.

In my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER, I’ve recently stepped up my scoring thanks to Terry Hanson and Carmelo Anthony being out due to injury. It resulted in a 112-point effort – the most points I’ve scored in that particular MyCAREER game – which also produced some memorable highlights. Check out those NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE and NBA 2K14 MyCAREER highlights below!

While I do post bulletins about our videos here on the NLSC, you can obviously keep up to date with them by subscribing to our YouTube channel! We’ll be uploading regular videos throughout 2023, from gameplay highlights and stories to Wayback Wednesday retrospectives to essays and commentary. As always, feel free to suggest games for us to play over Parsec, and we’ll be sure to share the highlights!

Wayback Wednesday: Our First Wishlist & How Far Games Have Come

Wayback Wednesday: Our First Wishlist & How Far Games Have Come

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at our very first Wishlist compiled for NBA Live 98, and how far basketball games have come since then.

On February 6th 1997, our founders submitted a Wishlist for NBA Live 98 on behalf of the community. It’s fun to look back at those suggestions now, and see just how many of them have been implemented in subsequent games. NBA Live was able to grant several of those wishes, and as NBA 2K became the premier brand in sim basketball titles, it also introduced features that once seemed like pipe dreams. Of course, going down that Wishlist, we can also see some ideas that unfortunately fell by the wayside after debuting, as well as some suggestions that weren’t so great.

Since Monday marked the 26th(!) anniversary of that very first Wishlist, I thought it’d be fun to go through it section by section, discussing what did eventually make it into video games, what still hasn’t, and in hindsight, what weren’t such great ideas. I believe it will demonstrate that feedback is (or certainly was) never in vain, as well as how far basketball video games have come as far as content, features, and mechanics. It may not always have been as we originally envisioned, but our wishes have indeed come true. Let’s take a look back…way back…

NLSC Podcast #463: Franchise Mode Gurus

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #463 of the NLSC Podcast!

Following a co-op session of NBA Live 10, we may have to bring it back into the rotation! We also connected to play NBA Live 98 PC with an old NLSC roster, and note that despite improvements in its immediate successors, it holds up just as well. Meanwhile, following up on a basketball management game riddled with microtransactions, it’s clear that the developer has no interest in goodwill or constructive feedback. We’re also talking about franchise mode follies, including the phenomena of “rosteritis” and “tradeitis”. We note how franchise mode burnout is similar to modding fatigue, and share tips on how to have a successful franchise game. In this week’s mailbag, community members share the origin stories of how they became basketball fans and gamers.

NBA 2K19 & NBA Live 09 Highlights

NBA 2K19 & NBA Live 09 Highlights

Two games from two different companies, released ten years apart! Dee has uploaded highlights of NBA 2K19 PC and NBA Live 09 for PlayStation 2 to the NLSC YouTube channel, and while those titles differ greatly in depth and quality, both reels represent a fun time on the virtual hardwood.

In the NBA 2K19 highlights, Dee and his brother are playing a co-op MyLEAGUE with an All-Time Fantasy Draft roster, using early 90s Orlando Magic branding. Dee is player locked to Shaq, and puts the Diesel to great use when getting the ball down low. The result is a very satisfying comeback victory against a similarly stacked Celtics squad, filled with spectacular plays.

The second video features Dee and I connecting on Parsec to revisit the PS2 version of NBA Live 09. As I’ve discussed before, it was a rather rough release, indicative of how that version was an afterthought by that point. It can still be fun despite its flaws, especially in a matchup of the 80s All-Stars and 70s All-Stars.

Check out both videos below! As always, I encourage you to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel if you haven’t already, as there’ll be plenty more basketball gaming content throughout 2023. Once again, feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play!

NLSC Podcast #459: What Basketball Gamers Played in 2022

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #459 of the NLSC Podcast!

As we tip off a new year of basketball gaming, we’re taking a look back at the titles that we and our fellow hoops gamers played and enjoyed the most throughout 2022. We discover that we’re definitely not alone in keeping the classics in our rotations, and from the sounds of things, a number of people will continue to enjoy a variety of games all year long in 2023! However, while we’ll support revisiting classics and enjoying all kinds of basketball games both new and old, there is one management title that we’d advise you to stay away from. If its greedy microtransactions aren’t enough, the way it treated someone with valid criticism certainly will be!

Monday Tip-Off: Finishing Seasons On The Virtual Hardwood

Monday Tip-Off: Finishing Seasons On The Virtual Hardwood

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on the rewarding feeling of finishing seasons in basketball video games.

I’ve previously said that completion is what we make it when it comes to the virtual hardwood. Indeed, I dedicated an entire article to exploring that notion. I still stand by that. While it can be extremely fulfilling to be a completionist when it comes to the games we play, it isn’t a necessity to have fun. It doesn’t matter if you didn’t collect all of the cards in MyTEAM, reach the Hall of Fame in MyCAREER, or play through to a championship in a mode representing the NBA season. As you long as you enjoyed your time with a game and feel like you got your money’s worth, that’s what counts.

With that being said, there’s great joy to be had in playing through seasons from start to finish. If you manage to play multiple seasons – either before the next game comes out, or by returning to an old favourite – it can be an even more rewarding experience. It’s a tall order, especially with a full 82-game season on twelve minute quarters with no simulation, as I’ve often aimed to achieve. No matter which settings you prefer however, there’s a feeling of accomplishment when a season is in the books, and your team is standing at midcourt raising the Larry O’Brien trophy. Even before that, of course, there’s a journey that I strongly advise everyone to savour along the way.

NLSC Podcast #456: The Truth About Sim Basketball

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #456 of the NLSC Podcast!

A recent Tweet from a fellow “old head” perfectly summed up why it’s a ridiculous insult for anyone who’s been around the block and knows their stuff. It’s quite timely too, as this week we’re reflecting on what simulation basketball actually means in 2022. We discuss how changes in the real NBA have affected the virtual hardwood in terms of what gamers want and what they’re emulating, and compare it to our more traditional notion of sim hoops. Our deep dive encompasses everything from mindless playcalling to the selfishness and meta gaming that dominates the online scene. In this week’s mailbag, we’re quizzing the community on the top six current and classic players in NBA 2K17.
