NLSC Podcast #452: NBA Starting Five 2005, Draft Rosters, & Overall Ratings

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #452 of the NLSC Podcast!

After playing a co-op game of NBA Starting Five 2005 over Parsec, it’s clear why the game wasn’t a worldwide release! The Japanese-exclusive title is still interesting though, and it leads us to reflect on Konami’s history on the virtual hardwood. We also connected for a game of NBA Live 96 PC with work-in-progress Draft Rosters, and had a blast playing with and against stacked lineups. Our eagerness to play older games also points towards a feeling of ennui when it comes to NBA 2K23. After comparing Birthday Lineups, we open up the mailbag to quiz the community on the Top 7 Overall Ratings back in NBA 2K10, which featured a couple of surprises.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! Monday Tip-Off: A Failure to Communicate

Monday Tip-Off: A Failure to Communicate

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some reflections on 2K and their failure to communicate.

Social media has granted us more access to brands than ever before. Whether it’s getting in touch when there’s a problem, or staying up to date on new products and services, it’s as simple as following an official account. The way that we interact with brands is a reflection of online discourse in general, running the gamut of friendliness and respectfulness. It’s why I’ll always advocate for constructive feedback and not stooping to the level of personal attacks. Of course, I also understand feeling so frustrated that your words end up being terser than you perhaps intended.

How about the way that brands interact with us? While many official social media accounts stick to professional, PR-friendly posts and replies, some brands have developed a reputation for being provocative. The official Wendy’s account has built an online brand of sass, poking fun at its competitors and involving itself in trending topics with an assortment of zingers. Other accounts have followed their lead, with mixed results. After all, a corporation jumping on memes is often a “How do you do, fellow kids” moment. Even if it’s not, it can come across as tone-deaf, particularly when a company like 2K has demonstrated a failure to communicate with respect.

Monday Tip-Off: Three Years Later, No Developments

Monday Tip-Off: Three Years Later, No Developments

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on the lack of developments regarding NBA Live three years after EA Sports last addressed its future.

That’s right. It’s been three years since the official NBA Live Twitter posted an update on the series. The Tweet confirmed that there would be no NBA Live 20, while also stating that they were “excited by (their) progress”, having been “putting in reps on (their) console basketball games”. At the time, it sounded like they might be changing direction, or at least opting for a longer development cycle, after NBA Live 19 failed to move the needle as hoped. The series’ struggles were cause for scepticism, but the fact that they were addressing the future also invited some degree of optimism.

Three years later, with absolutely no further developments or announcements, it’s much harder to be optimistic. EA Sports’ message to NBA Live gamers three years ago acknowledged the need to get everything right and “earn (their) future”. It was an honest statement, though nothing we hadn’t heard before after previous games failed to live up to expectations. More to the point, there was also an explicit promise to provide regular updates, which obviously didn’t happen. Indeed, the only activity on the NBA Live Twitter since then has been to re-Tweet a tribute to Kobe Bryant from the main EA Sports account. So, three years later, what do we make of this?

NBA 2K23 Patch 2.0 Out On All Platforms

NBA 2K23 Patch 2.0 Out On All Platforms

Patch 2.0 is out now for NBA 2K23 on all platforms! It should come through automatically as long as you’re online. If it doesn’t, try checking for updates manually, or restarting your console or Steam client.

Notably, Patch 2.0 is the first update for NBA 2K23 to feature any release notes. Previous updates were essentially hotfixes for various issues, with no changes to gameplay. Conversely, the new update addresses some gameplay issues in addition to fixing bugs, as well as adding likeness updates for several NBA, WNBA, and historical players.

You can find the full patch notes below, and I’ve also created pages in our Wiki to log the update history for Current Gen and Next Gen. Feel free to add your thoughts in the comments below, as well as join in the discussion here in our NBA 2K23 Forum!

NBA 2K23 MyTEAM Domination Rockets Challenge

NBA 2K23 MyTEAM Domination Rockets Challenge

After conquering the Southeast Division in NBA 2K23 MyTEAM Domination, Dee4Three has moved on to challenge the teams of the Southwest! Once again, he’s uploading highlights from his journey through the mode to the NLSC YouTube channel.

As you can see, Dee has switched his squad’s branding from the Seattle SuperSonics to the Phoenix Suns of the 1980s. Although they’re now wearing different garb, his team featuring the likes of Michael Jordan, Xavier McDaniel, Dee Brown, Jason Williams, Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Terry Cummings, and Shaquille O’Neal, are certainly in familiar form! Dee’s highlights include a bit of everything, from poster dunks and pinpoint passing to sharpshooting from downtown and other great plays. Additionally, all three difficulty levels are represented. Watch the reel below, or catch it here over on YouTube!

If you’ve also been playing MyTEAM Domination in NBA 2K23, share your experiences in the comments below, or join in the discussion here in the NLSC Forum! As I noted in previous posts, Dee has been spearheading an increase in video content for us for more than a year now, with efforts that of course include the Top 10 Plays of the Week. NBA 2K23 MyTEAM Domination Southeast Highlights

NBA 2K23 MyTEAM Domination Southeast Highlights

As we’ve been discussing on the NLSC Podcast, Dee4Three has been working his way through Domination in NBA 2K23 MyTEAM. He’s recently completed all of the Southeast challenges, and has put together a highlight reel of his triumphs.

With players like Shaquille O’Neal and Xavier McDaniel on his squad, you can expect a ton of rim-shaking dunks! Unsurprisingly, Michael Jordan, Dee Brown, and Vince Carter also provide plenty of high-flying highlights and crafty moves. Seattle SuperSonics fans will no doubt enjoy seeing that classic branding being put to good use, as Dee pays tribute to a team that a lot of people still miss dearly. Watch the reel below, or catch it over on YouTube!

We’ve been making regular uploads to our YouTube channel over the past year or so, with Dee spearheading that endeavour with highlight reels, Parsec tournaments, and of course, the Top 10 Plays of the Week. We want to do even more video content moving forward, so check out our channel and be sure to subscribe! In the meantime, have you been playing Domination in NBA 2K23 MyTEAM? How far along are you? Monday Tip-Off: NBA 2K14 MyCAREER Trading Cards

Monday Tip-Off: NBA 2K14 MyCAREER Trading Cards

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with a collection of virtual trading cards, based on my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER.

I’m wrapping up my kick with the PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K14 with a month of Wayback Wednesday features, but I also wanted to pay further tribute to the fun I’ve had in MyCAREER. Playing through four full seasons was an absolute blast, and I look forward to continuing the journey in Year 5 when I’m ready for a break from NBA 2K23. Although I’m putting the game and my story topic on the shelf for the moment, I’ve created one last bit of content based on my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER: a series of trading cards.

Now, graphic design certainly isn’t my forte, and the layout I’ve chosen is not exactly original. Indeed, it’s intended to pay tribute to a series of cards by Fleer that were one of the last sets that I actively collected as a teenager back in the late 90s. NBA trading cards hold a lot of nostalgia for me, and playing through NBA 2K14 MyCAREER was a throwback experience, too. On top of being an older game, it also reminded me of the importance of enjoying the journey rather than mindlessly grinding, and feeling enthusiastic enough to create a story topic. As such, these virtual trading cards are meant to commemorate what’s been a fun journey in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER so far.

NLSC Podcast #447: Fun With NBA Live 2003 & NBA 2K23

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #447 of the NLSC Podcast!

After putting together a rough draft of an All-Time Teams roster for NBA Live 2003 PC, we decided to test it out over Parsec. The result was a fun co-op game, and incentive to keep working on the project! We’ve still been having a blast with NBA 2K23 as well, and recap our recent sessions with MyTEAM, MyNBA, MyCAREER, and 3v3 Pro-Am. We also feel compelled to call out egotistical influencers who dismiss opinions based on follower counts, and remind everyone that you don’t need to be a “big name” to have a worthy opinion. After brainstorming some more modding ideas, we open up the mailbag to discuss ideas on how to improve customisation features.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! Monday Tip-Off: Don’t Say We Didn’t Warn You

Monday Tip-Off: Don't Say We Didn't Warn You

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off by discussing something that many of us tried to warn our fellow NBA 2K gamers about, that’s finally being widely acknowledged.

There’s an old episode of The Simpsons – a Season 1 episode in fact, so a very old one indeed – wherein Marge contemplates having an affair with her bowling instructor, voiced by Albert Brooks. Lisa recognises that Marge is showering her and Bart with treats out of guilt; predictably, Bart is only interested in reaping the benefits, leading Lisa to explain that he’s still in the denial stage, whereas she’s already feeling fearful. Later on, when Bart reaches the fearful stage, Lisa says she can’t help him because she’s already moved on to a new stage: self-pity.

Look, I’ll take any excuse to make a Simpsons reference, but that scene aptly sums up what I want to talk about today. For years, many of us have been pointing out the greed and anti-gamer/anti-consumer approach in NBA 2K. We’ve been shouted down time and time again, with predatory mechanics and subpar design being defended with every clichéd argument in the shill’s handbook. This isn’t to say that there hasn’t been successful pushback – hey, haircuts are free now, whoopee! – but way too many people were comfortable with VC-related issues, until suddenly they became too much. For those people, and for those who still shill: don’t say we didn’t warn you.

NLSC Podcast #446: Return of the NBA Live 2001 Legends

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #446 of the NLSC Podcast!

They’re back! Nate and Roger, the NBA Live 2001 Legends, join us once again to talk about their all-time favourite basketball video game, as well as other virtual hardwood classics that they enjoy such as NBA Live 2004 and NBA Live 2005. We discuss the appeal of retro basketball gaming, and compare notes about what drives our nostalgia for specific titles. As fellow creators, they also weigh in on the challenges that come with creating content that’s based around older titles, or otherwise doesn’t chase trends. The guys also share some great stories about interacting with former NBA players thanks to their NBA Live 2001 highlights, name some of their favourite video game teams, throw out a few suggestions for fantasy scenarios, and list other video games that they enjoy.

NBA 2K23 MyTEAM Domination: Dee4Three vs Heat

NBA 2K23 MyTEAM Domination: Dee4Three vs Heat

As I noted earlier this week, Dee4Three is uploading a ton of gameplay footage to our YouTube channel. This includes his journey through MyTEAM Domination in NBA 2K23, with his latest matchup coming against the Miami Heat.

Dee has already assembled a squad featuring some of his all-time favourite players. In addition to the pre-order Ruby Michael Jordan soaring through the air, you’ll also see Jason Williams tossing lobs, Shaquille O’Neal throwing it down, and Xavier McDaniel bullying Heat players. All three difficulty levels are accounted for in this spectacular highlight reel featuring alley-oops, great defensive plays, effortless three-point bombs, and posterising dunks. Watch it below, or catch it here over on our YouTube channel!

Stay tuned for more videos as Dee’s squad continues to make its way through all of the divisions to conquer the current NBA. In the meantime, have you been playing Domination in NBA 2K23 MyTEAM? If so, how far along are you, and which players are you currently running with? What are your impressions of MyTEAM, and the game in general? Share your thoughts in the comments below, as well as join in the discussion of MyTEAM here in the NBA 2K23 section of the NLSC Forum!

NLSC YouTube Highlights Round-Up

NLSC YouTube Highlights Round-Up

In addition to the Top 10 Plays of the Week and full episodes of our podcast, we also upload other basketball gaming videos to the NLSC YouTube channel! I’ve fallen behind on sharing the uploads here on the NLSC itself, and to that end, I’ll be making a better effort to post bulletins featuring new videos moving forward.

That’s because in addition to curating the weekly Top 10 countdown, Dee4Three has been very prolific in uploading excellent gameplay highlights for a variety of titles, in addition of course to NBA 2K23. This includes his MyTEAM Domination highlights, as he’s currently working his way through the mode. You’ll also find playlists featuring our Parsec tournaments, co-op and competitive sessions, and more.

I’ve also put together a highlight reel from my first session in The Rec in NBA 2K23, in which Valor and I squadded up with a number of random teammates; some better than others! Kenny also joined us for some 3v3 Pro-Am games, and I’ll have a highlight reel from that session uploaded very soon. In short, please subscribe to our channel for some fantastic basketball gaming content, and in case those YouTube notifications don’t work, keep an eye out here for bulletins about our future uploads! For now, you can catch up on the most recent uploads to the NLSC YouTube channel below.

NLSC Podcast #445: Is NBA 2K23 The Greediest 2K Ever?

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #445 of the NLSC Podcast!

The greediness and pushiness of microtransactions in NBA 2K23 is under fire this past week, as the honeymoon period with the game appears to be drawing to a close. We’re certainly inclined to agree with that critique, though it’s disheartening to see people shilling and shouting down valid criticism. While we’re still enjoying NBA 2K23, there are concerning issues from gameplay balance online, to the expense of MyTEAM packs and upgrades in MyCAREER. Meanwhile, the quickness in patching a happy accident with MyNBA Eras rosters while leaving other issues untouched highlights a continued lack of goodwill. We also recall a cool feature in the Japanese-exclusive NBA Starting Five 2005, and open up the mailbag to get the community’s thoughts on the approach to VC in NBA 2K23, as well as find out what they’ve been playing so far.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! Monday Tip-Off: How Many Patches Is Too Many?

Monday Tip-Off: How Many Patches Is Too Many?

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with a few thoughts on the amount of patches that modern basketball video games – primarily NBA 2K – tend to receive.

One of the interesting changes within the basketball gaming community is the general reaction to official patches. In the early days of the genre, when patches were only available for the PC releases, we were usually excited and grateful to get them. This of course can be ascribed to their rarity. It often took petitions and prompting from the community to get those title updates, usually accompanied by a laundry list of bugs and other issues. Even so, not every NBA Live, or other PC release for that matter, would receive an official patch.

While we’re still glad to see official patches and desire the fixes they potentially bring, it’s fair to say that there’s more cynicism and wariness surrounding those updates. It’s not unheard of for patches to break the game, either by introducing a new bug, or by making an undesirable change to the gameplay. It’s raised the question as to how many patches per year are ideal. Between their size on console and the possibility of unwanted changes, too many patches can potentially lead to inconsistent quality and cumbersome downloads. On the other hand, too few title updates can leave several issues unresolved. With that in mind, what is the ideal number of patches to receive?
