NLSC Podcast #496: NBA 2K17, NBA Live 06, & Community Favourites

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #496 of the NLSC Podcast!

Many of our all-time favourite basketball video games are still in the rotation, and this week we connected on Parsec to revisit two of them: NBA 2K17 and NBA Live 06 PC! We reflect on the strong points of each game and why they hold up so well years later, as well as the satisfying feeling of playing them with mods that we created! We’re also interested in the community’s all-time favourite hoops titles, so in this week’s mailbag, our listeners tell us which ones they still hold close to their hearts. We’ve also got some tips regarding affordable cards in NBA 2K24 MyTEAM – while advocating for No Money Spent, of course – and a couple of customary cheap plugs.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! For more information on the NLSC Podcast including episode guides, check out this page in our Wiki. You can also find the show on our YouTube channel, along with the rest of our video content. As always, thanks for tuning in, and go get buckets!

The Friday Five: 5 Gimmicks That Didn’t Last Long

The Friday Five: 5 Gimmicks That Didn't Last Long

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five gimmicks in basketball gaming that didn’t last very long.

A common complaint about features, mechanics, or modes in basketball games is that they’re “gimmicky”. Of course, it’s possible to describe the more positive attributes of basketball games as “gimmicks”, in the sense that they’re selling points. However, we usually reserve the terms “gimmicks” and “gimmicky” for features and mechanics that we feel deserve the negative connotation. They’re the aspects of basketball games that add little value, and perhaps even detract from the overall experience. It’s why we say we want to see real improvements and great additions, and not just gimmicks.

Unfortunately, basketball games have experimented with ideas that turned out to be more gimmicky than beneficial. They’re not alone in that regard, though. Other genres of video games, television shows, films, social media platforms…not every idea will be a winner, particularly if the concept wasn’t necessarily intended to be beneficial to the audience. Some ideas are certainly creative and merited a try, but didn’t pan out as well as hoped. The good news is that although we’ve seen a number of questionable gimmicks in basketball games, many of them didn’t last too long. They either evolved into a better concept, or were dropped very soon afterwards, as in these five examples.

The Friday Five: 5 Plays That Affected Video Games

The Friday Five: 5 Plays That Affected Video Games

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five plays that had a profound impact on gameplay design in basketball video games.

Since the aim of sim basketball games is to depict the NBA in a realistic manner, it goes without saying that events in the real league have had an impact on those titles. Likewise, our enthusiasm for real basketball makes us want to imitate NBA highlights on the virtual hardwood. It’s something that the games have allowed us to do with increasing accuracy over the years, as new animations, controls, and mechanics are added. Our desire to see certain plays accounted for in video games can be traced back to wide trends and specific moments alike.

Quite often, they’re the memorable plays that are assured to make all the highlight reels for decades to come; the iconic moments in NBA history. When we see them happen in real life and can’t replicate them in games, we immediately develop a keen interest in seeing them made possible in future releases. While it may not be entirely accurate to ascribe a particular gameplay addition solely to a single highlight, there’s no doubt that memorable plays have had an impact on gameplay development. After all, the developers are basketball fans too, and are just as eager to perform those dazzling plays on the sticks. Here are five plays that impacted gameplay design!

Monday Tip-Off: My 25 Favourite Basketball Video Games

Monday Tip-Off: My 25 Favourite Basketball Video Games

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with a countdown of my Top 25 favourite basketball video games, in celebration of another milestone here at the NLSC.

On Saturday, I celebrated my 22nd year of running the NLSC. It’s been a long ride with plenty of ups and downs, but I’m still very glad that I accepted the gig when Tim moved on to work at EA Sports, and that I stuck it out through some rough patches to enjoy the good times. To mark the occasion, I’ve decided to rank my Top 25 favourite basketball video games. This being my 22nd Anniversary as webmaster/admin of the NLSC, I was originally going to pick my Top 22 games. Top 25 has a better ring to it though, and it also serves as a belated 25th Anniversary celebration for the site itself!

Before we get to the countdown, let me emphasise once again that it is a Top 25 of my favourite basketball video games; not the Top 25 best hoops titles. That’s a different list, and if I were being more objective, there are games I’m listing here that wouldn’t make the cut. Because I haven’t spent as much time with certain NBA 2K, College Hoops, or NCAA Basketball/March Madness titles, I don’t have as much of an affinity for them, though that may well change in the future. I haven’t “forgotten” about those great basketball video games, but they haven’t become one of my personal favourites (as yet, anyway). With that being said, here are my Top 25 virtual hardwood classics!

With the latest news on Mamba Moments in NBA 2K24, and his birthday being just a few days ago, the late Kobe Bryant is definitely on the minds of basketball gamers! As such, he’s featured a few times in this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays, with virtual Kobe proving to be just as spectacular as the real deal. His teammate Lamar Odom is also getting in on the action as Dee and I re-created a 2006 Lakers vs. Mavericks matchup in NBA Live 10, and LookyDaGamer once again defends his crown as the Putback King. It’s clear that many basketball gamers in our community love playing with historical rosters, so it’s no surprise that Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant frequently appear in the NLSC Top 10 Plays. They’re in the countdown again this week, with the kind of spectacular plays that their real life counterparts often produced! The NBA Live 2001 Legends are also back, this time taking it to the rim with Steve Francis in NBA Live 2003. Indeed, aerial highlights remain the motif this week, as seven games spanning two decades are on display. Let’s get to the action!

The Friday Five: 5 Stints That Never Appeared in Games

The Friday Five: 5 Stints That Never Appeared in Games

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five player stints that never officially appeared in any basketball video games.

One of the reasons that I enjoy retro basketball gaming, and covering old titles for Wayback Wednesday, is the interactive almanac aspect. As I’ve said so many times, firing up old games is like consulting an almanac or encyclopedia. You’ll see all the familiar faces in strange places, and back in familiar places. The memorable teams of yesteryear are there to browse, and of course, play with. For so many of us, video games complemented our NBA fandom, and were part of following along with the league that year. Not to overuse a phrase, but they capture a snapshot of the season.

Well…for the most part! As I’ve demonstrated through various articles, there are aspects of basketball video games that prevent them from being completely accurate interactive almanacs. We’ve seen phantom stints; the players that only appeared on certain teams in games, as they didn’t ever suit up for that club in an official NBA contest. There are comebacks that were over before they began, and players who made it into the rosters of video games without ever tallying a single minute in the league. And then, there are the players who had stints that never appeared in the official rosters of a game. Here are five of the most memorable unaccounted for stints.

Wayback Wednesday: The Folly of Separate Shoot Buttons

Wayback Wednesday: The Folly of Separate Shoot Buttons

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at the approach of having separate shoot buttons in NBA Live.

If you asked me which basketball video game has had perfect controls and gameplay mechanics, I’d have to say we’re yet to see it! Obviously perfection is an unrealistic goal in general, but even if we amend the definition to mean near-perfect and without any major criticisms, I don’t believe any title truly qualifies. Even the best basketball games that come extremely close in that regard have had at least one quirk with their controls and mechanics. It may not render them unplayable or unenjoyable, but there’s still something about the concept that’s flawed.

That’s basically how I feel about the separate shoot buttons in older NBA Live games. It initially worked and was a good solution as far as deepening shooting controls, but then was taken to the extreme in NBA Live 07, exposing its flaws. It’s an interesting situation though, especially when compared to similar attempts to expand the passing controls. Let’s take a look back…way back…

It’s great to see regulars in the NLSC Top 10 Plays, and as Dee noted over on YouTube, it’s fair to say that the frequent contributors have their own signature styles! This week, we’ve got another jaw-dropping putback by LookyDaGamer, Kenny fires away with another full court buzzer-beater, and TeddyBearTheGamer has a dazzling dunk using college rosters. Dee and I are throwing it back with retro kicks, namely the original NBA ShootOut, and NBA Live 18 Ultimate Team. Six different games are featured this week, along with current stars, Legends, and MyPLAYERs. Let’s get to the action!

On top of the usual assortment of poster dunks, the theme of this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays is variety and Legends. From throwback rosters in NBA 2K23’s MyNBA Eras to squads of Legends in NBA Live 06 Dynasty and NBA Live 18 Ultimate Team, many of us are enjoying taking to the virtual hardwood with players of yesteryear! This week’s countdown also answers a very important question. Who is the true GOAT: Michael Jordan, M. Guard, or Roster Player? Konami’s NBA in the Zone 2 offers up a compelling argument! As for variety, nine different games are represented this week, which is awesome to see. Let’s get to the action!

It’s awesome to see the community hitting the virtual hardwood in the offseason, and getting even more enthusiastic about the NLSC Top 10 Plays at the same time! Dee received a truckload of submissions as a result, so there are some bonus highlights (or double features, if you will) at some of the spots in this week’s countdown. The top spot goes to NBA 2K24 cover player Kobe Bryant though, with a highlight that’s almost ten years in the making. Eight different games are featured this week, once again spotlighting the variety that the community enjoys. Let’s get to the action!

Alley-oops are a common sight here in the NLSC Top 10 Plays, and rightfully so. However, this week’s selection of lobs is certainly special, featuring stylish and ambitious passes, incredible finishes, and one particularly ludicrous play that we discussed in the latest NLSC Podcast! And of course, there are some ankle-breaking moves sprinkled in, along with jaw-dropping dunks that didn’t need an alley-oop to get off the ground. A total of seven games are featured in this week’s countdown, ranging from NBA 07 through to NBA 2K23. Let’s get to the action!

Big dunks, big swats, explosive moves. That’s the theme of this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays! And when I say dunks, I’m not talking about wide open rimgrazers. You’ll see some wild alley-oops with acrobatic finishes, and some absolutely vicious poster dunks. There’s also great two-way plays, broken ankles, and even a clutch dagger in there for good measure. On top of that, there’s the usual great variety as six different games are spotlighted in the countdown including NBA in the Zone 2000, as well as NBA Live 09; a game we’ll be revisiting soon on the NLSC Podcast. Let’s get to the action!

Recently, BPDHoplite alerted me to the fact that a couple of vital NBA 2K16 modding tools by gregkwaste were no longer available. Fortunately, with the use of the Wayback Machine, I was able to track down the NBA 2K16 Explorer and 3D Importer/Exporter, and re-upload them to our database. You can find them at the links below!

Obviously we want to preserve mods and modding tools alike, whether they’re for NBA 2K16 or any other game, so please feel free to alert us to any missing files, or indeed upload them yourself if you have them. Unfortunately there will inevitably be some files that are lost forever, but as a community, we can do our best to track down and preserve them whenever we can. Thanks once again to BPDHoplite for the heads up in this instance!

As always, thanks also to everyone who continues to contribute to our Downloads database! If you need help uploading files, be sure to check out this video tutorial. For more information about downloads, the modding community, and Mod Releases bulletins, please see this FAQ in our Wiki.

This week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays features a dazzling assortment of dunks – as always – but it’s not just about leaving the rim rocking. There are some incredible moves setting up the drives that culminate in those fantastic finishes, including some unique ones that you may not have ever seen before; even if you’ve spent hundreds of hours with the game!
