Monday Tip-Off: Old Favourites Deserve Love…And Mods

Monday Tip-Off: Old Favourites Deserve Love...And Mods

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off by once again advocating for retro basketball gaming, as I believe old favourites deserve love…and also mods.

Retro gaming is hardly an obscure interest, no matter what the genre. Of course, the newest and most popular titles will always get the most attention, and annual sports releases are often left in the past by a majority of the fanbase. As such, there’s always risk in producing content based around old favourites, at least as far as getting more eyes on what you’re doing. Nevertheless, it’s something that I’ve had an interest in doing, going right back to when I joined the community and created the NBA Live Domain. As I’ve said before, I’ve realised that I was born to be a retro gamer!

That’s why I’ll always advocate for dusting off old favourites, if only every now and again. The clips and highlight reels of older basketball games that Dee and I have shared over the past few years have clearly resonated with the community. To that point, we’ve had comments along the lines of “I wish I could still play this”. Here’s the thing: there’s no reason you can’t! As long as you still have the games and hardware to run them, let nothing stop you from hooking up a console! Furthermore, as far as PC releases are concerned, recent ones readily work, while older titles can still run with minimal fuss. With that in mind, why shouldn’t we look to mod old favourites?

NLSC Podcast #502: Hoop Land & NBA 2K24 Ennui

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #502 of the NLSC Podcast!

Koality Games has released a new version of Hoop Land for mobile devices, and having followed their progress reports in the NLSC Forum, we were keen to give it a try. After doing so, we’re hoping to see it come to PC via a Steam release! Unfortunately, we’re far less excited about both versions of NBA 2K24 right now, and based on the responses to this week’s community question – to say nothing of the lack of mods, highlights, and discussion – we’re not alone there. On the bright side, we’ve been having a blast with other games in our rotation including NBA Live 10 and NBA 2K14, and so spend some time catching up on our recent sessions.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! The Friday Five: 5 MyCAREER Habits I Can’t Break

The Friday Five: 5 MyCAREER Habits I Can't Break

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five habits that I can’t break when I play MyCAREER.

Without a doubt, I’m a creature of habit. If I’m comfortable and there’s no need to switch things up, I’m not going to change for change’s sake. I have my go-to orders at my favourite fast food restaurants, as well as my preferred dishes if I’m eating at a more upscale establishment. I enjoy having a routine, and while I am open to new interests and experiences, I also know what I like, and what I can reliably stick with. This carries over into my gaming, basketball or otherwise. I’ve established preferences and habits that work for me in the games that I regularly play.

Needless to say, once I developed a taste for MyCAREER, I soon developed habits that are now extremely difficult to break. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as those habits have allowed me to enjoy MyCAREER in a number of games; as well they should, seeing as how they’re formed by my preferences and the experiences I want out of the virtual hardwood! However, some of those habits come from how I play other genres of video games. Being a creature of habit can also have its drawbacks, eschewing change and variety in favour of the familiar. With that being said, here are five MyCAREER habits that I can’t – or at least, very seldom – manage to break.

Alright, so it isn’t officially Halloween until Tuesday, but since it’s already the Spooky Season, we’ve got a frighteningly good NLSC Top 10 Plays this week! From an out-of-the-box entry from Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City and the Skeleton Crew doing their thing in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, to amazing arcade action in NBA Street Vol. 2 and historical highlights in NBA 2K24, it’s scary how the community keeps coming through with fantastic plays. There’s also another glimpse of my fixed official roster for NBA 2K10, which Dee and I discussed in Episode #500 of the NLSC Podcast. Let’s get to the action!

Wayback Wednesday: The Class of 2003 & Video Games

Wayback Wednesday: The Class of 2003 & Video Games

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at the Class of 2003, and their impact on and connection to basketball gaming over the years.

Somehow, it’s been twenty years since the Class of 2003 – widely considered to be one of the best NBA Draft Classes of all time – debuted in the NBA. Only one player from that Draft – LeBron James – is still active, and now playing in his 21st season. With the retirement of Andre Iguodala and Udonis Haslem, he officially became the league’s oldest player. This is something I’ve been trying to get my head around and make peace with. After all, I’m a couple of months older than LeBron, which means I’ve reached the point where I’m older than all active NBA players. Old head indeed!

This day was bound to come, of course, but it’s not something you really think about when you’re a hardcore basketball fan in your late teens or early twenties. However, the entry of the Class of 2003 into the NBA two decades ago was one of my first “Oh, I’m not exactly a kid anymore” moments. More than starting to go out to clubs and pubs, staying up as late as I wanted, or any other rites of passage, realising that there were now NBA players who were my age made me feel…well, not that I was grown up, but definitely in the next stage of life! Let’s take a look back…way back…

NBA 2K19 Classic Seasons Project Now Includes 1997

NBA 2K19 Classic Seasons Mods

The Classic Seasons project for NBA 2K19 by Stildo33 and company is ongoing, and to that end, it now includes a 1997 season roster! As previously noted, the project stretches back to 1987, meaning that it now covers over a decade of NBA history, and some very memorable campaigns at that.

Like the previous releases, the 1997 roster is a comprehensive total conversion mod. It features all 29 NBA teams from the 1997 season, complete with faces, jerseys, courts, and logos. Both it and the previously released 1996 mod have been reworked so that they’re compatible with MyLEAGUE. They also include the Dream Team and Dream Team II, as well as historical Draft Classes. Once again, the level of detail in the Classic Seasons project for NBA 2K19 can easily make you forget that you’re playing a game that was originally set in the 2019 season!

Note that both the rosters and art pack are distributed the old fashioned way, so the servers being offline isn’t an issue. However, if you picked up the project prior to June 2023, you’ll need to download both packs again. You can find it here in the NBA 2K19 Modding section of the Forum, along with previews, installation help, and news on further updates. Congratulations to Stildo33 and company on another outstanding release!

Although there are some mixed feelings about NBA 2K24, many people are enjoying it, as you can see from a few of the entries in this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays! As always however, many others are getting their virtual hardwood fix from older titles, which also continue to provide great moments for our countdown. On top of wild buzzer beaters and lobs, this week’s Top 10 spotlights some mods, including my recently-released fixed roster for NBA 2K10, and one of my favourite short-lived Atlanta Hawks jerseys in NBA 2K19. Let’s get to the action!

You can tell how much the community is into the NLSC Top 10 Plays each and every week, because the countdowns just keep getting better and better! The result is some truly spectacular virtual hardwood highlights that – as Dee noted in the YouTube description this week – presents a worthy challenge when it comes time to rank them all. Every play in the countdown will get you fired up for some basketball gaming this weekend, but the top five were in very close competition for the #1 spot. Once again, a variety of games are being spotlighted, from NBA Jam right through to NBA 2K24. Let’s get to the action!

Monday Tip-Off: Control & Influence in Career Modes

Monday Tip-Off: Control & Influence in Career Modes

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts about the importance of having an appropriate amount of control and influence in career modes.

There’s a reason that I’ve been talking about playing NBA 2K14 MyCAREER in so many articles and on the NLSC Podcast, posting updates and highlights over on my Twitter/X, and maintaining a story topic in the Forum: it’s been a blast! Playing into my sixth season has been so fun and rewarding, and it’s reminded me of why I came to really enjoy career modes. The emphasis on grinding and pushy recurrent revenue mechanics that have come to plague more recent iterations of MyCAREER aren’t an issue. There are no quests, no open world nonsense…nothing but virtual basketball.

Of course, being one of the earliest iterations of MyCAREER, and the first to adopt the story-driven approach, NBA 2K14’s take on the career experience does have a few limitations. There’s no private court where I can shoot around whenever the mood strikes, either for genuine practice or just to fill time. A few of the stats screens are inaccessible unless a news story on the in-game NBA.com links to them. There’s content that I can no longer access because the servers have long been shut down. However, it’s the features that granted more control and influence in later games that I really miss, even if the lack of them arguably makes for a more authentic experience.

NLSC Podcast #496: NBA 2K17, NBA Live 06, & Community Favourites

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #496 of the NLSC Podcast!

Many of our all-time favourite basketball video games are still in the rotation, and this week we connected on Parsec to revisit two of them: NBA 2K17 and NBA Live 06 PC! We reflect on the strong points of each game and why they hold up so well years later, as well as the satisfying feeling of playing them with mods that we created! We’re also interested in the community’s all-time favourite hoops titles, so in this week’s mailbag, our listeners tell us which ones they still hold close to their hearts. We’ve also got some tips regarding affordable cards in NBA 2K24 MyTEAM – while advocating for No Money Spent, of course – and a couple of customary cheap plugs.

Not surprisingly, we’re starting to see more and more highlights from NBA 2K24 in the NLSC Top 10 Plays. That’s not to say that people aren’t still playing other games though, as this week’s assortment of powerful posters and awesome alley-oops also come courtesy of NBA 2K23, NBA 2K19, NBA 2K14, and even Fox Sports NBA Basketball! It’s also great to see a variety of modes and some mods on display. It underscores one simple fact about basketball gaming: as long as you’re enjoying your time on the virtual hardwood and creating memories, that’s what’s important. With that being said, let’s get to the action!

The Friday Five: 5 Gimmicks That Didn’t Last Long

The Friday Five: 5 Gimmicks That Didn't Last Long

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five gimmicks in basketball gaming that didn’t last very long.

A common complaint about features, mechanics, or modes in basketball games is that they’re “gimmicky”. Of course, it’s possible to describe the more positive attributes of basketball games as “gimmicks”, in the sense that they’re selling points. However, we usually reserve the terms “gimmicks” and “gimmicky” for features and mechanics that we feel deserve the negative connotation. They’re the aspects of basketball games that add little value, and perhaps even detract from the overall experience. It’s why we say we want to see real improvements and great additions, and not just gimmicks.

Unfortunately, basketball games have experimented with ideas that turned out to be more gimmicky than beneficial. They’re not alone in that regard, though. Other genres of video games, television shows, films, social media platforms…not every idea will be a winner, particularly if the concept wasn’t necessarily intended to be beneficial to the audience. Some ideas are certainly creative and merited a try, but didn’t pan out as well as hoped. The good news is that although we’ve seen a number of questionable gimmicks in basketball games, many of them didn’t last too long. They either evolved into a better concept, or were dropped very soon afterwards, as in these five examples.

NLSC Podcast #495: A Second Look at NBA 2K24

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #495 of the NLSC Podcast!

Now that NBA 2K24 has been out for over a week, how do our second impressions compare to our first look at the game? This week we join the community in discussing how we feel about the gameplay after more time on the sticks, and it’s fair to say that we’ve noticed a few more issues! Having dived into MyTEAM and MyCAREER, we’ve also got some thoughts on the disappointingly greedy approach in both modes, as well as the difference between fair challenge and artificial difficulty. In addition to our ongoing NBA 2K24 coverage, we also take some time to catch up on what we’ve been doing in NBA 2K14, NBA 2K19, and NBA Live 06, while getting far too excited reminiscing about former NBA big man Chuck Nevitt.
