The NLSC Top 10 Plays is starting both a new month and the weekend off with a bang, with fantastic highlights spanning three decades of basketball gaming! From a midair lob in NBA Live 96 to thunderous dunks and a clutch play in NBA 2K25, the community showed out once again this week. With this year’s March Modness tipping off, an outstanding modding project is appropriately also on display. As always, our countdown will get you hyped for another weekend of basketball gaming, so let’s get to the action!

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five pet peeves I have when it comes to NBA branding.

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned from changing up the design and layout of the NLSC from time to time in the twenty three years that I’ve been running the site, it’s that you can’t please everyone. No matter what improvements there might be, there’ll always be a couple of comments demanding that we change it back. As frustrating as that is to read, I get it. After all, aversion to change is common, and I’m as guilty of it as anyone else! New aesthetics can be jarring and may take time to get used to, no matter how nice they are, or how much a fresh look was needed.

This is something to keep in mind whenever NBA teams introduce new branding. Of course, sometimes those new designs leave us wondering what the people responsible were thinking! We also tend to get attached to certain logos and jerseys – especially the ones that were in use when we first got into the NBA – so personal preference will lead us to balk at certain branding. It doesn’t necessarily mean we’re right or wrong, but we are all entitled to our opinions on the looks that teams sport. To that point, I definitely have some pet peeves when it comes to NBA branding past and present. These are the five that spring to mind as the ones that I find the most irritating.

As we discussed in Episode #565 of the NLSC Podcast, the NBA was packed with stars and talent in the 2000s. This week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays provides some entertaining reminders of that, as big names of the New Millennium such as Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, and Tracy McGrady are all soaring to the rim for authoritative slams. You’ll also see one of the best lobs that NBA Live 10 can produce, and Virtual Hardwood Legend Terry Hanson. Seven games are featured this week, so without any further ado, let’s get to the action!

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five erroneous ratings that were based on reputation and narratives, rather than accurate analysis.

Creating roster updates for PC releases of NBA Live for so many years has made me critical of, but also sympathetic to, the producers who maintain official rosters. On one hand, I know the importance of accurately rating players and always strived to do my best in that regard, while also relying on the watchful eyes of the community to provide helpful feedback. To that end, I also understand how easy it is to overlook certain ratings when there are over 400 active players to keep track of. Mistakes will slip through, or a much-needed update will be forgotten.

With that being said, there are times when erroneous ratings aren’t actually a matter of oversight, but rather by design. There are a few reasons for this. As Dee has pointed out, a lack of care with copy and paste jobs, and myopic reliance on spreadsheets and formulas, has led to laughable ratings and tendencies. Other times, these erroneous ratings are reputation-based, as an unsubstantiated narrative about a player is accepted as common knowledge. However, it’s not always a bad thing, as a player’s skill may demand ratings that their stats may not, justifying some padding. These five examples represent the good, the bad, and the lazy, of erroneous reputation-based ratings!

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with a few thoughts on what it would take to get me to play online again.

From NBA 2K16 through to NBA 2K20, I was invested in playing the connected experiences in MyCAREER. I wasn’t exclusively an online gamer of course, as I got great enjoyment out of playing the NBA side of MyCAREER too, including making it to the Hall of Fame in NBA 2K19. However, one of the reasons that I kept returning to the mode every year was to level up a MyPLAYER so that I could join the rest of NLSC THRILLHO for some online games. As the grind became more of a chore and the rest of the crew’s enthusiasm waned, I too lost interest in MyCAREER.

Long gone are the days when I’d consider jumping into The Rec every night of the week, just to see what it was like! Indeed, outside of playing through the story in NBA 2K21 and occasionally jumping online, and a very brief return in NBA 2K23, I’ve stuck to the offline MyCAREER experience in NBA 2K14. Of course, it’s not just disinterest in the online scene that’s turned me off MyCAREER in recent years. From gameplay gripes to frustration with grinding and quests, I’m weary of the NBA side of the mode as well. Considering my willingness to change up my basketball gaming habits though, as we enter 2025, could anything persuade me to play online again?

Earlier this week on the NLSC Podcast, we discussed how the NBA has a three-point problem. You know what we never have a problem with in the NLSC Top 10 Plays, though? DUNKS! To that end, we’re proud to present another countdown that pays tribute to the highest-percentage and most spectacular highlight in basketball. This week’s Five is a list of five players and their short-lived stints that nevertheless became iconic.

Even when a player has had stints with multiple teams, there’s usually one that stands out as their most famous or memorable. Interestingly, it isn’t always the team that they spent the bulk of their career with. Sometimes, it’s the short-lived stints that produce the most success or notoriety, so they’re the ones that are best remembered and often talked about. Personal nostalgia also comes into play here. I’d suggest that we tend to associate players with the teams they played for when we first started watching and taking a keen interest in basketball, or at least very early on in our fandom.

To that point, our perception of time also changes as we age. A player having a three or four-year stint seemed like a long tenure back when I was a teenage hoop head, but now that I’m older, it’s over in a blink! Looking back, I’ve realised that there are quite a few Hall of Fame players whose most iconic stints were actually rather short-lived. Despite that brevity however, those are the jerseys that we tend to picture them in. As such, it’s interesting to reflect on how long those stints actually lasted, and why they became so iconic to the point of eclipsing longer tenures. With that in mind, here are five all-time greats, and their iconic short-lived stints that I tend to remember best.

This week’s Five is a list of five star players who played for both the Lakers and Celtics.

It is undoubtedly the most iconic rivalry in the history of the NBA. It even inspired the title of the very first game in the NBA Playoffs/NBA Live series! As of writing, the Lakers and the Celtics have combined for 35 of the 78 championships in league history, and have clashed in the Finals a record 12 times. The 2024 season saw the Celtics edge ahead of the Lakers with their 18th championship, and they also have a 9-3 edge in their twelve NBA Finals clashes. Boston also leads the all-time series, and is the only team with a lifetime winning record against LA.

Of course, despite the rivalry and all of the passionate responses it invites from Lakers and Celtics fans, the teams have often done deals. Furthermore, taking into account players that joined one or both teams via free agency, there’s a long list of players who have donned both Celtics green and Lakers purple and gold. That’s inevitable with the teams being around for decades, but it does get interesting when you look for stars and Hall of Famers who ended up playing for both of these storied franchises. To that end, there are five particularly noteworthy players that come to mind here. As we tip off a new season where all eyes are on both teams, let’s take a look at who they are!

This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on the importance of balance in basketball video games, and what balance really entails.

Balance is undoubtedly one of the most important attributes a basketball game can have. In fact, it’s an essential ingredient in most action-oriented video games. Of course, like “skill gap“, the term is prone to being reduced to a buzzword. Gamers say they want balance and developer blogs will talk about the upcoming game having much better balance, but what does that truly mean? Even if we can define it, is it something that can actually be achieved, or is it just a pseudo-intellectual way of saying that we like the gameplay of a certain title, and that it works for us personally?

I brought up “skill gap” deliberately, as a lot of mechanics that strive to achieve that concept do run into issues with balance. Whether they’re tuned to cater to the most elite gamers (or at least, the elitist gamers), or they’re too powerful and easy to abuse, some mechanics are too unbalanced to work. To that point, no gameplay mechanic exists in a vacuum, and must mesh well with other mechanics in order to have the right balance for an enjoyable – and for that matter, truly competitive – experience on the sticks. Before we sneer at someone to “get good” and declare that their criticism is merely a “skill issue”, we must look at whether or not a game is actually balanced.

It’s clear that the community is enjoying NBA 2K25 so far, as it’s establishing a consistent presence in the NLSC Top 10 Plays. This week’s countdown features some clutch plays and poster dunks from the new release, but a handful of old favourites also remain in the rotation. You’ll find Dr. J operating in a work-in-progress ABA mod for NBA Live 06, a project that we discussed in Episode #547 of the NLSC Podcast. There’s also a long bomb from a retro showdown in NBA 2K14, some fancy passing by an NBA 2K13 MyPLAYER, and even the first appearance of the Gameboy version of NBA Jam Tournament Edition. From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #546 of the NLSC Podcast!

NBA 2K25 has been out for about a couple of weeks now, which means the annual honeymoon phase is drawing to a close. To that end, this week we join the community in following up on our first impressions with a rundown of our key likes and dislikes of the game so far. It’s still mostly good news in our book, but we’re not quite ready to declare it the best NBA 2K ever as some of our fellow gamers are. We also recap a co-op session in which we took on Dwight Howard’s Magic with Derrick Rose’s Bulls using the LeBron era rosters, leading us to reflect on those two squads. Finally, a new segment makes its debut, inspired by a surprising observation while playing NBA 08.
