We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off by sharing some of my hopes and expectations for NBA 2K25.

The NBA 2K25 preview season tipped off with some great news for our community, namely the reveal that the New Gen version is coming to PC. Given that my new PC should be able to handle it on relatively high settings at least, it’s something that I’m personally able to look forward to. Of course, since I do own a PlayStation 5, I’ve already been able to experience the ninth generation version of NBA 2K. To that point though, as I’ve previously discussed, I haven’t been particularly thrilled with what is now the flagship version of the game.

Of course, as I’ve also recently stated, it’s important to keep an open mind. I don’t go into new releases hoping to be disappointed, or looking to be negative. I’d rather enjoy the game every year, even if I am keeping some old favourites in the rotation. Recent releases have left me feeling cynical and less optimistic about the future of the series though, and that’s difficult to shake. Indeed, during the past two preview seasons, I discussed how NBA 2K23 and NBA 2K24 might win me over, and re-reading what I wrote, not a whole lot has changed. So, with that being said, what are my hopes and expectations for NBA 2K25 as we await more previews, and its September release?

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #539 of the NLSC Podcast!

Several former EA developers are working on The Run: Got Next; a 3-on-3 basketball game that’s being described as a spiritual successor to NBA Street. This week, we join the community in sharing our thoughts on IGN’s early preview of the game, which suggests a direction that many basketball gamers who remember NBA Street fondly may not actually enjoy. To that end, we also discuss whether it sounds like the game is truly carrying on the legacy of the iconic series, especially after revisiting NBA Street Vol. 2 over Parsec. We also react to a New York Times article that called out the predatory practices in 2K Sports and EA Sports titles, an issue that we’re certainly passionate about.

The NLSC Top 10 Plays always welcomes high flyers, and to that end, an assortment of players from across NBA history are soaring into the latest countdown! From Darryl Dawkins doubling up on devastating dunks to Charles Barkley skying for a windmill to Clyde Drexler and Jerome Kersey connecting on a wild alley-oop, the rim is being well and truly rocked once again this week. NBA 2K25 is obviously on a lot of basketball gamers’ minds right now, but there are plenty of great titles to play in the meantime. However, in a nod to one of the upcoming cover players, this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays features A’ja Wilson demonstrating her brilliance in clutch. In addition to that, flashy and vicious dunks are on display as always, but Shaquille O’Neal will also dazzle you with a rather unexpected play. The first details about NBA 2K25 have been revealed, and they’ve brought some extremely exciting news: the New Gen version is coming to PC! This week, we join the community in discussing this much-anticipated announcement, including what it will mean for a modding community that’s been aching for a PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X port. It’s not the only noteworthy news of course, as we already have the system requirements, confirmation of no crossplay on PC, and word of a new era coming in MyNBA which naturally has us speculating as to what it will be. We also react to the cover players and art, and touch on some other tidbits that we’ve noticed such as combined pre-orders on console, and purported Steam Deck optimisation.

It goes without saying that the most spectacular and satisfying virtual dunks are always going to be candidates to be featured in the NLSC Top 10 Plays. To that end, there’s another superb selection of them this week, but one stands alone in first place, as Isaiah Rider pulls off a rare and incredible twist on one of his signature slams in NBA 2K14, courtesy of retro season rosters. The NBA 2K League has been put on hiatus until 2025, an announcement that came as a surprise to both league players and everyone else involved. This week, we join the community in discussing how and why the NBA 2K League failed to meet some incredibly lofty expectations, despite the backing of the NBA. We also recap a game of NBA Live 10 in which we took on Argentina with Team USA, as well as an NBA 2K10 session in which we ran back a showdown between the Chicago Bulls and Utah Jazz using the fantastic 1997 season mod. There’s also some fun trivia to share, along with a PSA to grab the digital version of NCAA Basketball 09: March Madness Edition from the Xbox Live Marketplace while you still can.

This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on how the ninth generation has been a disappointment for me so far.

I was eager to get a PlayStation 5 as soon as possible back in 2020, and was fortunate enough to snag one during the second wave of pre-orders at my preferred retailer here in Australia. It was essential in order to cover the Next Gen version of NBA 2K that tipped off the ninth generation that November, and there are obviously other games that I’m interested in as well. However, to be completely honest, the ninth generation has been a significant disappointment for me so far. None of the NBA 2K titles on PS5 have held my attention for an entire year, nor have I been tempted to revisit them.

To that point, I’ve mostly been using my PlayStation 5 to play MyCAREER in NBA 2K14! It’s not just the virtual hardwood that’s left me feeling uninspired by the ninth generation, either. I was also disappointed by Mortal Kombat 1, though not so much for its gameplay. This is where somebody might suggest that I’ve “outgrown” video games, or that I’m simply out of touch with modern trends. Given some of the trends that have emerged in video games – basketball or otherwise – I’d actually consider that to be a point of pride! Look, I can’t deny a couple of Grumpy Old Man opinions, but when it comes to the ninth generation, I truly believe my disappointment is justified.

When it comes to the eternal “dunks or three-pointers?” question, I still choose dunks…well, most of the time. There is one way that a trey can potentially outrank a slam in a countdown of spectacular highlights, and that’s when it wins a game as part of a miraculous finish. This week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays features a couple of highlights demonstrating that exception in the Dunks vs. Three-Pointers debate, courtesy of Dee and the NBA Live 2001 Legends! We also share some more stories of playing real basketball, and react to an illuminating article that details some of the sneaky tactics that occur behind the scenes in games with pushy recurrent revenue mechanics, some of which may well be employed by Take-Two.

During Episode #534 of the NLSC Podcast, we teased an authentic Michael Jordan highlight from a session with the 1997 roster mod for NBA 2K10. You’ll find that spectacular dish in this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays, but it’s not MJ’s only appearance in the countdown! Marcus Camby also threw down a dunk inspired by His Airness (with a little Dr J. in there as well), courtesy of the NBA Live 2001 Legends. Meanwhile, Kobe Bryant pulled off an impressive circus shot in NBA 2K7 for the and-one. I’ll admit that between my lack of enthusiasm for NBA 2K24 and the frequent absence of detailed patch notes, I’ve not been on top of posting news about the official updates this year. With that being said, Season 8 is tipping off in NBA 2K24 this Friday, and as such, a new patch is available. As always, it should come through automatically as long as you’re online. If it doesn’t, try checking for updates manually, or restarting your console or Steam client.

It appears that 2K has given up on updating the release notes over on the official website, but according to a post on the official NBA 2K Community Discord, it simply prepares the game for Season 8 in MyCAREER and MyTEAM. At this point of the year, that’s about all we can expect! A further patch for Season 9 should be dropping in about six weeks, and that will take us through to the release of NBA 2K25.

You can find a history of patch notes for NBA 2K24 (such as they are, in most cases) for both the Next Gen and Current Gen versions over in our Wiki. I’ve also added information about the Season 7 update, which I previously neglected to post. It’s always interesting to see which motifs emerge each week in the NLSC Top 10 Plays, and this week, it seems to be NBA 2K14! The game is well-represented in the countdown, including a play that spotlights a 2024 season update for one of the most modded games in the history of our community. Speaking of mods, the Classic Seasons project for NBA 2K19 also produced a highlight featuring the Indiana Pacers of the 90s.
