What can you expect from this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays? Vicious poster dunks, of course. A big swat from Charles Barkley, and a crafty steal by Dwyane Wade. Not one, but two players lobbing the ball off the backboard to themselves for emphatic finishes. And finally, some clutch play to top everything off! With the prior gen and new gen versions of NBA 2K14 both on display, technically there are ten different games featured in this week’s countdown, ranging from NBA Hangtime through to NBA 2K25. In short, once again our Top 10 is all about variety. Let’s get to the action!

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #634 of the NLSC Podcast!
With the preview season and indeed the release of NBA 2K27 looming on the horizon, what are we hoping to see from this year’s sim basketball game from Visual Concepts? This week, we join the community in sharing some of our key Wishlist items, from our most-desired gameplay improvements to ideas for enhancing modes, features, and content. Needless to say, we’re hoping for more authenticity, accessibility, and quality! We also discuss a couple of details about NBA 2K27 that have already leaked, including the release date, Standard Edition cover player, and the end of support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. On a sad note, we also pay tribute to the late Stacey King, who passed away at the weekend.

80 years ago today, the NBA – then the Basketball Association of America – was founded at the Commodore Hotel in New York. Appropriately, this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays contains many tributes to the history of the league! From the first Knicks-Spurs NBA Finals showdown in NBA Live 99, to Wemby swatting shots in NBA The Run, to Kobe’s clutch play in his eponymous era in NBA 2K25, the stars from yesterday and today are strutting their stuff across eight different basketball video games in our latest countdown. Let’s get to the action!

This week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays is another demonstration of the artistry of the dunk, with players pulling all kinds of tricks out of their bags and putting each other on posters. Things also get a little cartoonish – dare I say looney – with the number one play in the countdown! There’s also a great play from a four-player co-op session of NBA Live 96 for Super Nintendo, another glimpse of high-flying action in NBA The Run, and some awesome mods and historical content on display. Let’s get to the action!

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on how MyNBA Eras has made it unlikely that we’ll see any new classic teams added to NBA 2K.
Way back in 2016, I posted a Friday Five listing five classic teams that I’d like to see included in future NBA 2K games. I revisited the topic with a second article in 2018, and it ultimately became an ongoing Friday Five series. Some of those squads have since been added to the games. No, I’m not trying to take credit for that! Many of those additions were very popular and obvious choices, so I highly doubt that I had any influence here. Nevertheless, I’ve enjoyed seeing the selection of classic teams expand, and there’s never any harm in throwing out suggestions.
However, the most recent instalment in that series – Part 13 – was back in 2022. There are a few reasons why I haven’t circled back to that topic for just over four years now. For a start, at this point I’ve already covered many of the teams that I’m interested in. Again, some are already included in the games, while others are unlikely to be added. As I’ve discussed before, this generation of NBA 2K games has left me cold, so I’m less enthusiastic about discussing ideas for future releases in general. On top of that though, the addition of MyNBA Eras makes it seem far less likely that we’ll see new standalone classic teams. Of course, it could be argued that that’s actually for the best.

We’re tipping off Year 6 of the NLSC Top 10 Plays in style, as the community once again brought the goods in nine different basketball video games! Devastating poster dunks and other flashy jams, huge swats, a wild fling to beat the buzzer in NBA Hangtime, and another game-winning buzzer beater can be found in this week’s countdown. You’ll also see some mods being enjoyed, five-player online team play action in NBA Live 95 for Super Nintendo, and a couple of appearances by Dee Brown. Let’s get to the action!

As is often the case, this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays is a fantastic mix of the old and the new. Not only are nine different games on display from NBA Live 10 through to the upcoming NBA The Run, but we’ve got updated rosters in older games, and all-time greats doing their thing in modern releases. It’s the Legends that ultimately have bragging rights this time around though, as Wizards Michael Jordan and Larry Bird demonstrate why they’re two of the best to ever step onto the hardwood, real or virtual.

This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on how real agendas have been infiltrating the virtual commentary in basketball video games.
The other day, I saw a social media post praising the positivity of the NBA on Prime crew’s coverage of a Lakers game. It drew comparisons with Inside the NBA, opining that Shaq in particular would’ve been negative in his commentary. It echoes recent remarks from Nick Wright, who at least tried to couch his callout with compliments. Back in November last year, Nikola Jokic wrapped up an interview with the NBA on Prime crew by calling it “much better“; a not-too-subtle jab at the lack of positivity he’s endured from other analysts, including the notoriously petty Shaq.
As much as I have my quibbles with the modern game, I can’t entirely disagree. When I first got into basketball, the NBA and its stars were presented as being part of a great ongoing legacy. That’s how it should be today. The problem is that in recent times, past generations have been disrespected in a way that I couldn’t imagine back in the 90s. Talking heads like Nick Wright have been a big part of that smear campaign – the “plumbers and dentists” rhetoric – so it’s rich to hear him plead for intergenerational peace and respect now. It’s bad enough that agendas like his plague coverage of the real NBA, but these days we have to listen to them in video game commentary too.

As always, this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays demonstrates what basketball gaming is all about in our community. We’ve got alley-oops, poster dunks, and spectacular jams on the break. There’s a fling from full court, and a game-winner with barely any time left on the clock. Various mods are on display, both winding back the clock and bringing old favourites up to date. And of course, there’s great variety with both classic games and recent titles in the mix, from NBA Jam Tournament Edition all the way through to NBA 2K26. Let’s get to the action!

The WNBA and its players recently came to a new agreement, so it’s only appropriate that there’s a WNBA highlight in this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays! It’s joined by a selection of spectacular plays from current NBA players, stars from the recent past, and all-time greats alike. Indeed, with this week marking the 31st anniversary of Michael Jordan declaring “I’m Back“, you’ll also find a signature Air Jordan move performed in NBA 2K11’s Jordan Challenge. Ten entertaining plays from seven different titles are ready to get you hyped for a weekend on the virtual hardwood, so let’s get to the action!

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #620 of the NLSC Podcast!
The NBA 2K series has been packed full of retro content for over a decade now, but despite some major additions throughout the years, the overall quality still leaves us wanting. After reflecting on the issue of quantity over quality and the general lack of care for classic teams and players, we join the community in discussing how we’d enhance the retro content in future NBA 2K games. From fixes and updates that are absolutely essential to some more ambitious ideas that would make the retro content even more fun to use, there’s plenty that can and should be done. We also touch on how this lack of attention to detail is also already affecting the new collegiate content that recently debuted in NBA 2K.

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on how NBA 2K gamers that are still playing on Last Gen consoles deserve better.
I’ll admit that I’m surprised we’re still seeing NBA 2K come out for the Last Gen consoles. Back in 2023, I speculated that we might be reaching the end of the road for NBA 2K on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, based on the minimal previews and lack of substantial post-release support. Obviously that didn’t turn out to be the case, with NBA 2K25 and NBA 2K26 both receiving Last Gen releases. While I wouldn’t be shocked if the series leaves PS4 and X1 behind in 2026, there’s actually a decent chance that NBA 2K27 will still be released on those consoles.
And you know what? I have absolutely no problem with that! Although I can play the New Gen version on my PlayStation 5 or PC, plenty of people don’t have that option, either by choice or circumstance. To that end, I truly loathe the elitist attitude that a contingent of Next Gen/New Gen gamers display, from mocking people for financial hardship to believing that Last Gen gamers don’t deserve a good product. The fact of the matter is that everyone who is still playing NBA 2K on a Last Gen console for whatever reason has deserved better than what they’ve received and how they’ve been treated the last few years. Only a shameless corporate shill would argue otherwise.

A wild alley-oop from our NBA 2K9 Association, a re-creation of one of the top dunks of the 1998 season in ESPN NBA 2Night 2002, and a modded-in Anthony Edwards doing his best Spider-Man impression in NBA 2K16. That’s just a small sample of the spectacular moments you’ll find in this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays! A total of six different basketball video games are providing poster dunks, ankle-breakers, big swats, and more, in another countdown that signals it’s time to hit the virtual hardwood. Let’s get to the action!
