This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at the time that Stephen Curry was briefly rated 99 Overall in NBA 2K16.

Sunday marked ten years since Stephen Curry was named the first unanimous Most Valuable Player in NBA history. We can certainly debate as to whether he should’ve been the first, as there’s been some questionable MVP voting over the years; even when the “correct” player won the award. However, I’d suggest that even if Curry shouldn’t have been the first, he was nevertheless absolutely deserving of the honour. He had a tremendous season, with both he and the Golden State Warriors breaking records. Of course, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers spoiled the ending!

A month before the Cavaliers’ 3-1 comeback became the story that defined the 2016 season however, Curry and the Warriors were obviously the talk of the league. Their impressive campaign and Curry’s individual brilliance naturally inspired debate about ratings and rankings, which also carried over to the virtual hardwood. In the wake of taking home a second-straight MVP and in unanimous fashion, Stephen Curry was boosted to 99 Overall in the official rosters for NBA 2K16, in an update that came through ten years ago yesterday. From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #630 of the NLSC Podcast!

Entering 2026, we had some plans and goals for the virtual hardwood. Since we’re rapidly approaching the middle of the year – no, don’t ask us where the time went – we decided to check in on how those plans are going! To that end, this week we’re joining the community in discussing our basketball gaming habits so far in 2026, from the selection of titles that we’re playing to the modes that have kept us hooked. We also recap a fun Parsec session with the Snes9x Super Nintendo emulator featuring a five-player co-op game of NBA Live 95 that was an absolute blast, and an intense four-player head-to-head showdown in NBA Hangtime that was ultimately decided in overtime.

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #628 of the NLSC Podcast!

While it’s certainly exciting to be on the cutting edge of gaming technology, we’re not always in a rush to upgrade our hardware and play the (supposedly) most advanced versions of basketball video games. This week, we’re taking a look at why many basketball gamers often opt to stick with last gen hoops titles – ourselves included – and some of the benefits of delaying a jump to the next generation. We also touch on next gen elitism and gatekeeping – in particular, the “you’re broke” crowd – and the community shares their experiences in sticking with last gen basketball video games. Suffice it to say that it’s been a more common practice over the years than some people may think!

Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some reflections on what keeps a few of my old favourites out of my basketball gaming rotation.

A few weeks ago, I discussed some of the basketball games that I’d like to bring back into my rotation at some point this year. Unsurprisingly, four of the games that I listed – NBA Live 96, NBA Live 2004, NBA Live 06, and NBA 2K13 – are among my all-time favourites. It only stands to reason that they’re prime candidates as I continue to get my virtual hardwood fix from retro and classic titles. And yet, despite holding those old favourites in high regard, to date I haven’t been in a rush to make them part of my rotation again. Instead, I’ve sought out new retro kicks.

It’s something that I’ve been thinking about since I posted that Friday Five article. My disappointment with recent NBA 2K titles has pushed me towards retro gaming, and to that end, you’d think I’d reach for my old favourites before anything else. After all, they’re the basketball games I’ve enjoyed the most. Familiarity and nostalgia should make them an ideal alternative whenever a new release fails to impress me. To that end, I have dusted off these old favourites here and there, but again, I’ve mostly been revisiting games that I overlooked, and discovering new favourites. Upon reflection, there are a few reasons why some of my beloved old favourites remained benched.

Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some reflections on how I’m just as passionate about getting rebounds on the virtual hardwood as I am racking up assists.

I’ve spoken at length about my love of tallying assists in video games. It all began with MyCAREER in NBA 2K13, where my player – a shooting guard – was thrust into the role of starting point guard when Ty Lawson went down for the year with an injury. One of the dynamic goals challenged me to break Fat Lever’s team record for assists in a single game, and that was that. In future games, my MyPLAYER was a point guard, built to get dimes. This carried over into playing online with NLSC THRILLHO, as I relished setting up the guys to score.

However, assists aren’t the only statistical column that I enjoy filling up in basketball video games. I also really relish getting rebounds! There’s something so satisfying about snaring a board, whether I’m controlling all five players or I’m locked to my career mode avatar. Indeed, on the couple of occasions that I’ve created a big man instead of a playmaking point guard, I’ve switched my focus from dropping dimes to cleaning the glass. Mind you, given how averaging a triple-double in MyCAREER becomes a habit when you have the strategy down pat, my point guards grab a lot of boards as well. Whichever game and however I’m playing, I truly do love rebounds.

There’s never a dull moment when it comes to the NLSC Top 10 Plays, but it’s always special when something rare and unique happens on the virtual hardwood. The rest of the countdown brings the goods too, as you’ll find the usual assortment of exciting dunks, flashy passes, and other smooth moves that leave defenders in the dust. Who are the most dominant players when they’re controlled by the CPU in basketball video games? This week, we join the community in discussing some of the most unguardable players that we’ve encountered on the virtual hardwood over the years, at least when they’re in the hands of the AI. Whether it’s an issue with the engine, or their ratings are slightly overdone or completely inaccurate, these stars and role players alike have given us fits on the sticks. We also reflect on the frustration of not always being able to light it up with those same players ourselves, and mention a few players who haven’t been as dominant in video games they really should be.

This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on how nostalgia is something special that we’re lucky to have, rather than being sad and pitiable.

Nostalgia has been getting a bad rap for quite a while now. Oh sure, there’s plenty of nostalgic communities and content online, as many of us love to reminisce. However, there has undoubtedly been a noticeable backlash to nostalgia as online demographics have shifted over the past decade or so. Beyond tired arguments about what was better – then or now – the discourse has been polluted by smug armchair psychoanalysis. If you’re nostalgic, or prefer to stick with something older, you must be hung up on the past, miserably chasing a moment in time that you’ll never get back.

Now, I can’t say that that doesn’t hold true for some people, though I’ll say it with far more sympathy and understanding than those who want to dump on the past to prop up the present! For many of us though, continuing to enjoy the classics – or at least looking back on them fondly – is neither depressing, nor preventing us from having new experiences. And so, the idea that nostalgia is a sad, delusional cry for help is infuriatingly condescending. Frankly, if we’ve made fond memories with our interests and passions that we can enthusiastically recall, then we’re extremely fortunate. If those things can still bring us joy, we’re even luckier. There’s nothing sad about that.

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #613 of the NLSC Podcast!

Happy New Year, fellow basketball gamers and hardcore hoop heads! As 2026 gets underway, we’re tipping things off by joining the community in discussing our plans for this year when it comes to basketball gaming and real basketball alike. From creating mods, polishing up old releases, and expanding our gaming rotations, to watching classic games, getting involved in local leagues, and simply shooting around more often, it’s fair to say that we’re primed to have a blast with hoops over the next twelve months! We also reflect on the most recent game in our co-op Chicago Bulls Association in NBA 2K9, which saw us pick up a very satisfying victory over a Divisional rival.

This week, I’m tipping things off with some reflections on getting into modes late.

As I noted at the beginning of November, there’s a ticking clock on NBA Live 19. With 2025 almost over, we’re getting inching closer and closer to time running out on the final NBA Live release to date. Once the servers are shut down at the end of January, it’ll be a wrap on all modes that require online connectivity. As it is, some of those modes are already inaccessible, or their matchmaking functionality has been disabled. NBA Live 19 Ultimate Team is still playable as of writing – at least on PlayStation 4 – but has lengthy load times as EA Sports gets ready to pull the plug.

For many basketball gamers, the impending shutdown of NBA Live 19’s servers and the lethargic menus in Ultimate Team won’t be a concern. Indeed, it may be a surprise that the game still has online support, limited and declining as it is. It’s something that I’m well aware of though, as I’ve been playing NBA Live 19 quite regularly in recent months, with a keen interest in Ultimate Team after completing The Streets World Tour. Needless to say, I won’t be able to complete everything in the mode before it’s gone forever. That likely would’ve been the case even if I had been playing LUT 19 since launch, but it’s another example of me being late to the party with game modes.

The NLSC Top 10 Plays on a Thursday? That’s right! Since this week’s countdown is also this year’s Christmas episode, we’re shifting things around on the schedule as we did for our Halloween special back in October. We’ll be back to the usual Saturday “timeslot” for the first Top 10 of 2026, but in the meantime, we’re celebrating the festive season with poster dunks, crazy alley-oops, and wild shots. Even Santa himself makes an appearance as six different games gift us an array of virtual hardwood highlights, setting the mood for some holiday hooping. Let’s get to the action!

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at NBA 09: The Inside for PlayStation 3.

The 2008 season lineup of basketball video games is arguably one of the weakest in the history of the genre. Outside of College Hoops 2K8, its titles aren’t popular picks for all-time favourites, or widely considered to be among the best in their series. NBA Live 08 was significantly better than NBA Live 07, but that was a low bar to clear, with plenty of room left for improvement. NBA 2K8 was a strange misstep following NBA 2K7. NBA 08 was at least on par with NBA 07, but to that point, there was no major leap in quality.

Fortunately, the genre bounced back for the 2009 season, providing basketball gamers with a couple of solid titles, and one fantastic release. Was NBA 09: The Inside one of those games? Well, not to spoil the entire retrospective, but unfortunately it wasn’t. In fact, in the spirit of the season, I’d suggest that anyone who was unlucky enough to receive NBA 09: The Inside for Christmas in 2008 may as well have been gifted a lump of coal in their stocking! So, why the harsh words for San Diego Studio’s final NBA game on PlayStation 3? Let’s take a look back…way back…

Was my last round-up of basketball gaming highlights on the NLSC YouTube channel really back in March? It appears so, which confirms two things. One, 2025 flew by way too fast. Two, my resolution to regularly post bulletins spotlighting our basketball gaming highlights hasn’t been going as well as I intended! With that being said, here’s a post to get you caught up on what’s been going on with the NLSC YouTube channel in recent months.

As you may know, Dee and I are currently playing an Association in NBA 2K9 with the Chicago Bulls. We made this decision after a few sessions with both NBA Live 09 and NBA 2K9, in which we tried out a handful of teams. Dee has shared the best moments from those preliminary games, as well as our Association so far. He’s also uploaded highlights from our other co-op basketball gaming sessions and head-to-head games with community members, including a 1985 showdown in NBA 2K13, a clash of All-Decade teams in NBA Live 2000, and a game between Pitt and Georgetown in NCAA Basketball 10.

Dee has been playing the most recent NBA 2K games more than I have, and he’s shared some fantastic highlights from those sessions. Those reels include Victor Wembanyama scoring 75 points, Paige Bueckers showing off her bag, top moments from the first 10 games of a Legends vs. Current NBA MyNBA, and other NBA 2K25 and NBA 2K26 gameplay videos. You’ll also find some footage of NBA Superstars for the arcade featuring Anthony Edwards, and a reel of the 2010 Suns vs 2004 Timberwolves in NBA 2K14.

Meanwhile, as I wrapped up Year 6 in my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER, I posted highlights from each round of the 2019 Playoffs. I’ve also shared highlights of my games of NBA Live 18 and NBA Live 19 with 2025 and 2026 rosters respectively. Speaking of custom rosters, I also posted highlights from a game of NBA 2K6 featuring the 1997 Bulls and Rockets, and Michael Jordan being added to the Wizards in an NBA Live 96 work-in-progress roster. There was a new entry in the NBA 2K14 Retro Series featuring the 1971 Lakers and Hawks, and I also made tributes for Lenny Wilkens and Rodney Rogers in NBA Live 19 Ultimate Team and NBA 2K17 respectively.

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some reflections on the challenges we face while trying to capture historical screenshots.

Between the topics I cover in various articles and my retro gaming habits involving classic teams and matchups, I’m often capturing screenshots of historical scenarios. Needless to say, there are some challenges when it comes to trying to snap the ideal shot. Obviously, many of them apply to virtual hardwood photography in general. From technical limitations to the available content to difficulty in staging everything the way you see it in your mind, the final result may not be exactly what you want. Of course, other times the results can be extremely satisfying.

To that end, I really enjoy firing up a game, tinkering with the rosters as necessary, and finding ways to stage historical scenarios for some great screenshots! Indeed, on top of using historical screenshots to illustrate the facts and trivia that I’m writing about, the theme of a number of my features in recent years has basically revolved around virtual pictures speaking their proverbial thousand words. Not only has this allowed me to indulge my nostalgia and love of NBA history, but it’s been fun trying my hand at some more visually creative content. Once again though, these historical screenshots come with several challenges, though tackling them has been rewarding.
