The Friday Five: 5 Lineups That Didn’t Last Long

The Friday Five: 5 Lineups That Didn't Last Long

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five lineups that despite their fame, didn’t actually last long.

Just how good is your memory? I like to think that mine is pretty good when it comes to basketball and basketball video games, because those are things that I’m passionate about. However, I definitely don’t have infallible recall! Moreover, our perception of time can be a tricky thing. To that end, while I may remember players, teams, lineups, and other such roster trivia many years later, my recollection of their longevity (or lack thereof) can be skewed. After all, what may feel like a long time when we’re living it day-by-day can turn out to be a short period in the grand scheme of things!

Case in point: the lineups that I’m talking about today. It’s no surprise that they stick in my mind – and I’m sure the minds of many long-time basketball fans and gamers – because they were all memorable in their own way. However, their memorability can ironically make us forget how short-lived those lineups actually were; especially if they did have a significant impact on the league (and video games) while they lasted. Even if they weren’t particularly successful, or a Video Game Team, they may still benefit from an oddity, or simply media hype, that grants them more nostalgic fame – or infamy – than you’d expect. Here are five such lineups that come to mind for me.

Wayback Wednesday: Lights Out Screensaver & NBA Jam TE

Wayback Wednesday: Lights Out Screensaver & NBA Jam TE

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at the free Lights Out screensaver that was packaged with the PC version of NBA Jam TE.

Considering that it’s one of my all-time favourite basketball video games, it should be no surprise that I’ve covered NBA Jam Tournament Edition several times in Wayback Wednesday. The PC version is particularly special to me, as it’s one of the very first hoops games that I bought. Indeed, I still have my original copy, which is fortunate as it seems to be a rare and expensive collectible nowadays! In any case, I’ve discussed so many aspects of NBA Jam TE in detail, from retrospectives of the game, to Kevin Edwards’ incorrect portrait, to theories about ratings.

However, apart from a fleeting mention in the aforementioned retrospective, I’ve never really talked about the Lights Out screensaver that came with NBA Jam TE PC. As a young, hoops-crazed PC gamer back in the 90s, it became a source of frustration for me, as I was never able to install it. This wasn’t a case of technological illiteracy, as I’ve been tinkering with computers since the age of eight or so (is it any surprise that I got into IT?). Rather, it’s an apparent mistake with the included documentation, one that I’ve long sought a solution to. Let’s take a look back…way back…

The Friday Five: 5 Favourite Derrick Rose Plays

The Friday Five: 5 Favourite Derrick Rose Plays

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five celebrates Derrick Rose by recalling five of his best plays.

As we discussed earlier this week in Episode #548 of the NLSC Podcast, Derrick Rose has called it a career after 15 seasons in the NBA. D-Rose is – as I’m sure many of you are aware – one of my all-time favourite players, right up there with fellow Chicago Bulls alumni Michael Jordan and Ben Gordon. To that end, I’m sorry to see him retire, especially without more fanfare and indeed a farewell tour back with the Bulls. After all of his injuries and with family life ahead of him however, one has to respect him for being at peace with his career, and his decision to walk away.

Obviously, there are some wistful What Ifs when it comes to Derrick Rose. If not for that devastating knee injury in the 2012 Playoffs, I’m sure he would’ve been one of the top stars of the 2010s. Who knows what the Bulls might’ve achieved had he remained healthy, and if they’d acquired some more firepower to support him? While it does sting to think about, I’m also grateful that I was able to see him become an All-Star and MVP, and truly get excited about the Bulls’ chances again as I did in 2011. He was a really fun player to watch – and play with in video games, too – so in honour of his retirement and his 36th birthday, here are five of my favourite Derrick Rose plays!

Monday Tip-Off: The Easiest Old Basketball Games To Get Into

Monday Tip-Off: The Easiest Old Basketball Games To Get Into

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts and advice on the old basketball games that are the easiest to get into.

If you’ve been around a while, reading my articles and listening to Dee and I on the NLSC Podcast, you’ll know that we’re enthusiastic advocates for retro basketball gaming. It’s not that we won’t play newer titles – and of course, the term “retro” is also subjective in that regard – but we love to revisit the classics, and encourage anyone who feels disappointed with modern games to do the same. Whether it’s a brief trip down memory lane or it becomes your primary means of hitting the virtual hardwood, there are many old basketball games that hold up and are still worth playing.

With that being said, some old basketball games are easier to get into than others. Needless to say, the further back you go, the more primitive the games, and everyone has a threshold as far as what’s too old to enjoy all these years later; at least on a regular basis. There’s also the matter of feasibility. You obviously need to be able to run the games, and that requires the necessary hardware, and sometimes technical savvy. There are ways to play pretty much any old basketball games that you can get your hands on, but some are definitely more accessible. To that end, here are my recommendations of where to begin if you’re interested in retro basketball gaming.

NBA 2K Modding Tools Re-Uploaded & Mirrored

NBA 2K Modding Tools Re-Uploaded & Mirrored

Unfortunately, as the years have gone by, we’ve not only lost mods for NBA Live and NBA 2K, but also a handful of modding tools. Whenever we can recover those lost files and resources, we’ll do our best to preserve them so that they’re readily available for anyone who wants to go back to play and create mods for old favourites.

To that end, a recent post in the Forum asking about Looyh’s Hook for NBA 2K22 prompted me to dig into my archives to see if I could mirror it. Not only did I find it, but I also discovered a couple of other modding tools for various NBA 2K games that I was able to add to our Downloads section.

These include Looyh’s Hooks for NBA 2K20 and NBA 2K21, along with some of his other tools. V0.96 of gregkwaste’s NBA 2K17 3D Importer/Exporter has proven difficult to track down, but I did find V0.95 in my archives, so in the meantime we can at least preserve that release. Similarly, I was only able to find V1.1 of Looyh’s File Export Console utility for NBA 2K21, but if V1.2 can be tracked down, I’ll upload it accordingly.

A very overdue addition is FlyingFinn’s roster editor for NBA 2K9 PC! That tool has been available as an attachment in the original Forum topic since 2009, but as it’s in a reply to the original post, it’s obviously very easy to overlook. As such, it’s now also in the Downloads section for safekeeping and easy access.

You can find links to all of the NBA 2K modding tools that I’ve re-uploaded and mirrored below; all credit to the original authors, of course! As always, if you have anything in your archives and backups that the community could benefit from – be they mods, utilities, or other resources – please feel free to add them to our Downloads section! Just be sure to credit the original authors, and also ensure that they haven’t stated that they don’t want their work to be posted or mirrored anywhere else.

The Friday Five: 5 Teammates Who Were Once Traded For Each Other

The Friday Five: 5 Teammates Who Were Once Traded For Each Other

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five teammates who were once traded for each other, and the video games that feature those stints.

While it’s become far more common – and some would say, acceptable – for stars to change teams nowadays, it’s always been somewhat rare for players to spend their entire career with one club. Even if a player does stay put, they’ll end up playing with a host of different teammates throughout the years. Between the players that join the team they’re on and the teams that they may go on to join, old rivals will become teammates, former teammates will reunite, and superteams will form, giving us plenty of interesting lineups to talk about…and of course, play with in video games.

Needless to say, trades also break up duos and teammates who no doubt enjoyed playing with one another. We’ve even seen former college teammates get traded for each other during the Draft, as Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison were back in 1998. A trade where former teammates end up being swapped for one another gets you thinking, specifically whether the reverse has ever happened. In other words, have any players who were once traded for each other later become teammates? It has indeed happened, and since I explore such trivia through the lens of the virtual hardwood, here are five traded players turned teammates, and the games featuring those pairings.

Monday Tip-Off: Padding & Politics in Player Ratings

Monday Tip-Off: Padding & Politics in Player Ratings

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on the padding and politics involved with player ratings.

Although the discussion has seemingly turned to MyPLAYER builds and figuring out the meta, I’d suggest that real player ratings will always be a point of interest. They’re still vital in accurately representing the players’ abilities and skill levels, and if you play franchise modes or with retro teams, you’ll notice mistakes and inconsistencies. There’s also still an interest in which players are top-rated in key categories such as dunking and three-point shooting, as well as where everyone ranks with their Overall Ratings. Again, it may not be as much of a focus now, but there’s still a discussion.

To that point, it’s clear that personal opinions and politics do play a role in both our view of the ratings, as well as how they’re assigned in the first place. Lest I sound like a grumpy old head grumbling about modern games, let’s make it clear that this has been going on for many, many years! Indeed, I’d suggest that as long as basketball video games have had visible ratings – and in some cases, where there have been some sneaky hidden mechanics – player abilities have been subject to padding and politics. There are times when it’s been fairly benign or even enhanced the experience, but it can certainly be problematic and damaging when it leads to widespread inaccuracies.

NLSC Podcast #526: Worst Voices of the Virtual Hardwood

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #526 of the NLSC Podcast!

Who are the worst and most annoying commentators to be stuck listening to in basketball video games? This week, we join the community in picking our least favourite voices of the virtual hardwood, whether it’s due to the opinions that they share, their delivery in the booth, or simply the sound of their voice. Of course, it probably won’t come as a huge surprise that we’re generally not fans of them in real life, either! We also recap a fun session with Basketball Classics that concluded in exciting fashion, and quiz the community on the top-rated point guards in NBA 2K9. Not to sound like a clickbait article, but the answers – and at least one noteworthy omission – may shock you!

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! For more information on the NLSC Podcast including episode guides, check out this page in our Wiki. You can also find the show on our YouTube channel, along with the rest of our video content. “Spectacular dunks” is a recurring motif in the NLSC Top 10 Plays – and for very good reason – but this week’s countdown is more of a celebration of clutch performances! You’ll find some long bombs that are on target, and thrilling game-winning shots, including one that secures a championship for the Los Angeles Clippers…in NBA Elite 11! For the first time in a while following its release in September last year, NBA 2K24 doesn’t make an appearance in this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays. Nine other games do however, providing an assortment of spectacular moments that’ll get you hyped up for another weekend of basketball gaming! There are big dunks of course, but also flashy passes, jaw-dropping one-on-one moves, and a string of awe-inspiring buzzer beaters, including one from ESPN NBA Basketball; a game Dee and I discussed in Episode #518 of the NLSC Podcast. Let’s get to the action!

It’s fair to say that Los Angeles Lakers Legends dominate this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays, from an unexpected circus shot from Shaquille O’Neal in NBA 2K19 to a signature Kobe Bryant dunk in NBA 2K24’s MyNBA Eras. Not only that, but Jerry West breaks out a long bomb in NBA 2K11 that’s reminiscent of one of his most famous highlights! You’ll also see Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, and Nate Robinson performing aerial feats, and even Super Mario and company are hitting the blacktop in this week’s countdown. Let’s get to the action!

The community has often displayed incredibly synchronicity when it comes to the NLSC Top 10 Plays, sticking to a theme without the need for a prompt. It’s happened again this week, with alley-oops being a common motif. They’re not the only highlight on display of course, as we also have needle-threading passes, slick dribbling moves, and players being put on posters even without the aid of a lob. Six games are featured in this week’s countdown, ranging from NBA Live 06 and NCAA March Madness 08 all the way through to NBA 2K23 and NBA 2K24. Let’s get to the action!
