Wayback Wednesday: A Long-Lost NBA Live 07 Preview

Dirk Nowitzki shoots a three-pointer in NBA Live 07

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m taking a look back at an NBA Live 07 preview that we had to pull due to spoilers.

The NBA Finals often brings us our first glimpse of the upcoming sim titles, though for the moment, both EA Sports and Visual Concepts are remaining tight-lipped. I’ve previously reflected on how the preview seasons seemed longer and more exciting in years gone by, and that was certainly the case in the mid 2000s. Back then, a lot of sites (including the NLSC) were on a mailing list for preview assets from EA. As the 2006 NBA Finals began, we received a press release detailing a simulation of the series in NBA Live 07, some prior gen screenshots, and new gen gameplay.

Unfortunately, we then received a directive from EA Sports that the feature and all of the media needed to be immediately pulled, as they contained something that wasn’t meant to be seen yet. As such, it would be a few weeks before we received any media that we could publish, and that 2006 Finals simulation in NBA Live 07 was lost to time. It’s something I’ve kept in my archives though, and since the Finals are upon us, it seems like a good time to bring it out of the vault. So, what was the result of the simulation, and why was the feature pulled? Let’s take a look back…way back…

NLSC Podcast #286: Online, Casuals, & Simulation

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #286 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! This week, Arcane and I are discussing the focus of online play in NBA Live and NBA 2K, and what that means for different types of basketball gamers.

We tip things off with a quick look ahead to the 2019 NBA Finals, as well as a few thoughts on the forthcoming gameplay patch for NBA Live 19. After catching up on the news, we dive into this week’s discussion topic: online, casuals, and simulation. We reflect on some recent Jordan Rec Center games in NBA 2K19, and how they’ve been indicative of changing attitudes towards the importance of sim-style virtual basketball. This leads us to question whether the core demographic is as sim as it used to be, or whether we’re now on the outer fringe. We also attempt to categorise the different types of hoops gamers, and throw out a few suggestions for improving the online experience by addressing various issues including matchmaking and gatekeeping.

Tune in below!

  • What are our expectations in terms of demos for NBA Live 19 and NBA 2K19? Are they likely to be any different to recent demos and The Prelude DLC?
  • Is it likely that we’ll ever see a Free-to-Play basketball game, similar to Fortnite?
  • Our Week in Basketball Gaming included a couple of tough but satisfying victories in Ultimate Team, as well as success in LIVE Events. We also spent time with The One, checked out the community uploads in MyLEAGUE, and played with the All-Time Teams.

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #209 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane and I as we give our thoughts on all the NBA Live 18 news coming out of EA Play, discuss a couple of other basketball gaming tidbits from the past week, and share a few final thoughts on the 2017 NBA season.

On this week’s show…

  • Coming out of EA Play 2017, we now know about The One, the new single player career mode in NBA Live 18. From the basic concept to the approach to Playstyles, it’s definitely sounding good.
  • A lot of the hands-on impressions of NBA Live 18 have also been very positive, which has us feeling quite optimistic. A couple of other details are also potentially quite promising.
  • Opponents quitting on you in online games of NBA 2K? 2K Support has some…interesting advice.
  • The latest patch for NBA Playgrounds has continued the trend of adding more content and making some very welcome fixes and adjustments.
  • We answer a listener question: would we like to see a story-driven career mode in NBA Live, similar to what we’ve seen in MyCAREER?
  • Our Week in Basketball Gaming included our most enjoyable 2K Pro-Am game in a while…after some more frustrating contests, of course.
  • With the Golden State Warriors’ victory in Game 5, the 2017 NBA Finals are over…of course, the MJ vs. LeBron debate is not.
  • We wrap up Episode #209 of the NLSC Podcast with a short discussion of Jerry West’s new role with the Los Angeles Clippers, and the announcement regarding 3-on-3 basketball at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #208 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane, Kenny, and I for a discussion of all the recent NBA Live 18 news, previews, and rumours, a look ahead to EA Play, thoughts on the latest action from the 2017 NBA Finals, and more.

On this week’s show…

  • A listing on Game Informer led to rumours of a PC release for NBA Live 18, which unfortunately isn’t going to happen. Nevertheless, an eventual return to the PC platform is something we’d like to see for NBA Live.
  • New gameplay footage, screenshots, and a couple of tidbits of information about NBA Live 18 have come out of a recent event in New York. We’re liking what we’re seeing, and intrigued by what we’ve read.
  • What kind of information and previews are we hoping to see at EA Play? We talk a little about our expectations for the event.
  • Our Week in Basketball Gaming has seen further progress in NBA Playgrounds, a dubious record almost set in 2K Pro-Am, and the triumphant return of Kiki Vandeweghe in MyTEAM.
  • We wrap up Episode #208 of the NLSC Podcast with a few thoughts on the NBA Finals. Even if we’re not exactly hating the results so far, it’s hardly a contender for Best Finals Ever…in our humble opinion, anyway. At least Game 3 was close, right?

  • Our Week in Basketball Gaming featured several more games of 2K Pro-Am, a couple of which were really, really satisfying.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #163

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #163 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! The 2016 NBA Finals are nearing their end, and we’re still at least a few weeks away from getting much in the way of detailed NBA 2K17 news, but Arcane, Kenny, and I still have some fun topics to talk about this week.

On this week’s show…

  • Following on from last week, we react to the rest of Team 2K being revealed. Do we think it will result in any additional in-game content?
  • If any new classic teams are added to NBA 2K17, what are some of the teams we’d like to see included?
  • Would we like to see the ability to select different courts – such as classic and alternate courts – in addition to selecting jerseys before gameplay?
  • In our Week in Basketball Gaming: the challenges of having a 5’7″ power forward in 2K Pro-Am, a couple of enjoyable games, and our future plans.
  • Moving on to the real NBA, we recap and discuss the latest action from the NBA Finals, and make our predictions for the rest of the series.
  • We also discuss LeBron James’ legacy. Are fans and sportswriters being too hard on The King, and selling his career short?
  • In a very cool decision, ESPN and TNT have come to an agreement which will allow Craig Sager to work the sidelines for Game 6 of the Finals.
  • Episode #163 of the NLSC Podcast wraps up with the second instalment of our new segment, Trivia Time! Will Arcane and Kenny break their tie this week?

NLSC Podcast – Episode #162

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #162 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! It’s been a quiet week for basketball video game news, but Arcane, Kenny, and I do have a couple of tidbits to talk about, as well as our latest experiences in 2K Pro-Am, and the 2016 NBA Finals. Also, a new segment makes its debut!

On this week’s show…

  • We tip off the show with another discussion on the lack of updates for NBA Live 16 through the end of the regular season and Playoffs, and what we’d like to see EA do during the offseason in the lead up to NBA Live 17.
  • 2K Sports are unveiling Team 2K, their talent lineup for NBA 2K17 which includes cover player Paul George. We speculate on the silhouettes in the teaser image.
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming, we reflect on last week’s 2K Pro-Am session, where we discovered that contrary to what Homer Simpson once said, there are actually sweeter and more satisfying things than winning by default.
  • Turning our attention to the 2016 NBA Finals, we reflect on the first two games, and make our predictions for the rest of the series. Sorry, Cleveland Cavaliers fans.
  • As it stands right now, who is the Finals MVP? What does it mean for Stephen Curry’s legacy – and the Michael Jordan comparisons – if he doesn’t have a big series?
  • With the season winding down, we tally our final scores for Bold Predictions. We’re hoping to do better next year.
  • Episode #162 of the NLSC Podcast wraps up with a brand new segment: Trivia Time! Andrew is the quizmaster, as Arcane and Kenny square off in answering three trivia questions. This week, the questions cover NBA Live and NBA Jam.

On this week’s show…

  • Paul George has been officially revealed as the cover player for NBA 2K17. A good choice, but was he our pick? We also discuss the pre-order bonuses.
  • It seems that former NBA player Jamario Moon is providing motion capture for NBA Live 17, suggesting that a fully featured console release is definitely still in development.
  • Speaking of NBA Live 17, a recent report by GameInformer has revealed that all EA Sports titles will apparently be making the transition from the Ignite engine to the Frostbite engine. We discuss what this might mean for the NBA Live series moving forward.
  • We remind PlayStation Plus subscribers to pick up the PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K16 via June’s Instant Game Collection, if they don’t already own it, or would like to double-dip.
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: 2K Pro-Am frustration, Stephen Curry in NBA Live 95, and more MyLEAGUE plans.
  • Moving on to the real NBA, we recap the end of the Golden State Warriors/Oklahoma City Thunder clash, and look ahead to the NBA Finals.
