NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week: July 22nd, 2023

NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week

Get ready for more fantastic highlights from the basketball gaming community in the NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week, curated by Dee4Three! New and old games alike are featured in this celebration of spectacular moments on the virtual hardwood. To submit your clips, post them in this topic, or hit up Dee on Twitter.

On top of the usual assortment of poster dunks, the theme of this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays is variety and Legends. From throwback rosters in NBA 2K23’s MyNBA Eras to squads of Legends in NBA Live 06 Dynasty and NBA Live 18 Ultimate Team, many of us are enjoying taking to the virtual hardwood with players of yesteryear! This week’s countdown also answers a very important question. Who is the true GOAT: Michael Jordan, M. Guard, or Roster Player? Konami’s NBA in the Zone 2 offers up a compelling argument! As for variety, nine different games are represented this week, which is awesome to see. Let’s get to the action!

What was your favourite highlight this week? Sound off in the comments below, and once again, get in on the fun by sending us your best plays! Wayback Wednesday: Atmosphere Settings in NBA Live

Wayback Wednesday: Atmosphere Settings in NBA Live

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at the Atmosphere settings in NBA Live.

Following a decade of duds and dormancy, it’s easy to forget how innovative NBA Live was, even after NBA 2K became the premier brand in sim basketball gaming. With that being said, if you’re been playing basketball video games long enough to remember a time when NBA Live was still widely considered a viable, or indeed even a preferable choice, you’ll probably remember NBA Live 10 as a strong release. I’ve seen people nominate it as the best game in the series, and while I appreciate it a lot more following last year’s retro kick, I’d only go so far as to say it’s one of the best.

I do see why many of my fellow gamers give NBA Live 10 the nod, though. It did several things right after a few rough years for the series, and appeared to be steering it in a better direction. NBA Live 10 still holds up today, and boasts a few features that newer releases – including the latest NBA 2K games – actually lack. One example that I’ve yet to cover in-depth here in Wayback Wednesday is the game’s Atmosphere settings. They weren’t unique to NBA Live 10, but it could be argued that the first implementation of the concept was the best. Let’s take a look back…way back…

NLSC Podcast #481: When To Bench A Basketball Game

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #481 of the NLSC Podcast!

How long does the allure of the latest basketball game last? How often does it hold our attention until the next game comes out? This week, we’re joining the community in discussing when and why we’ve chosen to move on from the current release in recent years. We also follow up on last week’s look back at NBA Live 15 by revisiting the even more controversial NBA Live 14. Suffice to say, we were once again surprised by some of the details that we noticed! Naturally we draw a few comparisons to NBA 2K14, which we also continue to enjoy with Year 6 of MyCAREER, and a Legends season in MyGM.

I try not to say it too often so as not to diminish the meaning, but this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays is one of the best yet! The community really brought the goods with an array of flashy moves and spectacular finishes, from ankle breakers and crafty passes to rim-rocking dunks and acrobatic layups. That includes a DeAndre Jordan windmill in NBA Live 15, and a play from the 2023 NBA Finals in NBA Live 06, as set up by the NBA Live 2001 Legends. Indeed, the NBA Live series was quite popular this week, accounting for four of the eight games featured in the countdown. Let’s get to the action!

NBA Live 15 Highlights: Knicks vs. Clippers

NBA Live 15 Highlights: Knicks vs. Clippers

In case you missed it, a new video has gone up on our YouTube channel! Dee has posted highlights from our game of NBA Live 15, in which he took control of Carmelo Anthony’s New York Knicks, and I used the Lob City Los Angeles Clippers. The game was made possible not only due to Parsec, but also the new beta version of the Xbox app that allows games to be streamed to a Windows PC.

Although NBA Live 15 was a rough release in many respects, we had a good time revisiting it, and were able to produce a number of highlights! From Melo’s scoring outburst during a fourth quarter battle, to Blake Griffin emphatically finishing lobs, there were some genuinely exciting moments. There were also a number of defensive plays that felt satisfying and organic, despite some of the quirks with player movement and animations. Unfortunately NBA Live 15 doesn’t support co-op play, but it turned into a great competitive contest down the stretch. Check out the reel!

We also took a deep dive into NBA Live 15 in Episode #480 of the NLSC Podcast, which you can tune into here. As always, please subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel for more basketball gaming content! Dee and I are also open to suggestions for games that you’d like to see us play, so feel free to hit us up.

NLSC Podcast #480: Is NBA Live 15 Overlooked?

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #480 of the NLSC Podcast!

NBA Live 15 generally wasn’t well-received when it was released, but might it be somewhat overlooked today? A fun session playing the game over Parsec prompts us to take a deep dive into all of its pros and cons. Suffice to say it’s a mixed bag, but it might just work its way into our rotation! We also connected to play NBA Live 06 PC with a 2012 season roster, and were reminded of what a special release it was. In this week’s mailbag, we join the community in talking about how we play basketball in real life. Which players would we compare our style of play to, and does that at all influence the creation of our players in career modes?

Monday Tip-Off: Wish I Could Play It, Now That I Can’t

Monday Tip-Off: Wish I Could Play It, Now That I Can't

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some reflections on wishing that I could play certain modes in older titles, now that it’s impossible.

The notion that we want what we can’t have, and that we don’t appreciate what we do have until it’s gone, are very old proverbs indeed. It’s a concept that’s been discussed at length, and portrayed in various works. In a rather infamous episode of Scrubs, J.D. discovers that he doesn’t want to be with Elliot after pining for her all season. Glam metal band Cinderella even had a power ballad literally titled “Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)“, which was used rather superbly – even movingly – in an episode of South Park. It’s a sentiment that we can all relate to.

As far as basketball video games are concerned, this is an inevitable part of server shutdowns. There was a time when that only applied to online multiplayer, but thanks to server-side content and connected experiences, single player modes are now also affected. Of course, there’s still plenty to enjoy in older basketball games, especially when you go back to before online content was ubiquitous. Over the past generation though, and even going back to the generation before that, there are modes that I wish I could still play. On top of that, there are modes that I wish I could play for the first time – or at least finally explore in-depth – now that that’s no longer possible.

Spoiler alert, this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays features a truly crazy sequence at the number one spot! It’s always fun when plays like that happen, and we love it when people share those moments with the community. The rest of the countdown provides plenty of excitement too, with spectacular throwbacks to the “Seven Seconds Or Less” Phoenix Suns, and the “We Believe” Golden State Warriors. There’s also an NBA Live 15 Ultimate Team clip from the archives! Five different games in total are represented this week, ranging from NBA 2K6 on Xbox 360 to the Next Gen version of NBA 2K23.

The NLSC Top 10 Plays often ends up featuring a motif, with dunking not surprisingly being a particularly popular one. This week’s countdown is getting a little more specific however, as the latest submissions included a variety of one-handed posters. Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, Paul George, Andre Iguodala, Dominique Wilkins, LeBron James, Derrick Rose, and Russell Westbrook, are all skying to the rim and embarrassing defenders across a variety of games from NBA Live 2004 through to NBA 2K23. LookyDaGamer also continues to dominate the blacktop, and there’s a celebration that Draymond Green would probably approve of!

This week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays features some wild shots, including a halftime buzzer beater in NBA Live 2004, and a really long bomb in NBA Live 97 (though sadly, not by Christian Laettner). NBA Live 19 produced a couple of nifty plays ending in emphatic dunks, as did NBA 2K22, including a clip where Donovan Mitchell has already made his Cleveland Cavaliers debut. As always, it’s great to see the community having fun with a variety of titles. Check out the countdown, and get in the mood to hit the virtual hardwood this weekend!

If this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays are anything to go by, basketball gamers are really looking forward to the new Jordan Challenge in NBA 2K23! Of course, His Airness isn’t the only Top 10 staple making an appearance in this week’s countdown. Ankles are getting broken, lobs are being thrown, buzzers are being beaten, and players are getting put on posters, in six different games ranging from NBA in the Zone 2000 right up to NBA 2K22. Some fantastic mods are also on display, which is definitely something we love to see in our community.

The Friday Five: 5 Events That Shake Your Confidence in a Game

The Friday Five: 5 Events That Shake Your Confidence in a Game

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five events that will shake your confidence in a forthcoming basketball game.

Although we can sometimes seem like a cynical bunch, I believe that a majority of basketball gamers do want to see a great new game every year. Sure, there’s a certain catharsis in a smug “I told you so”, but when it comes down to it, I expect most of us want to at least be satisfied with, if not blown away by, the latest release. It’s wise to keep our expectations realistic, and not get our hearts set on something that hasn’t been promised. At the same time, we can still be optimistic without getting carried away, or ignoring troubling signs.

To that point though, there are warning signs that we must pay attention to. These are the events that shake our confidence in a game, and for good reason. While it’s easy to jump to conclusions, there are recognisable patterns and red flags when it comes to the development of basketball video games. The longer you play them, and the more preview seasons that you experience, the better you get at recognising those signs. Also, while social media giving us access to the devs has been great for feedback, it can also leave us concerned about the people responsible for our favourite games. One way or another, these events will shake our confidence, and dampen our enthusiasm.

NLSC Podcast #433: A 10, But They Spoiled the NBA 2K23 Cover

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #433 of the NLSC Podcast!

The official Electronic Arts and WWE Games Twitter accounts made bewildering gaffes this past week, and like many of our fellow gamers, we’re unimpressed. Obsidian, meanwhile, displayed an attitude that we’d like to see more often. Elsewhere, NBA insider Shams Charania apparently leaked the NBA 2K23 cover player, and we have some thoughts on 2K’s choice. Since the NBA 2K23 preview season is almost upon us, we also reflect on NBA 2K22, summing up our final thoughts on the game, and giving it a rating out of ten. After reminiscing about a satisfying session of NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, we open up the mailbag to discuss who should be the five best-rated players in NBA 2K23.

Fans of the Seattle SuperSonics should be delighted by this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays, as Shawn Kemp appears twice in the countdown! Admittedly he’s wearing a Bulls jersey in one of them: a dunk plus the foul in NBA Live 15 Ultimate Team. Nevertheless, I’m sure you’ll still enjoy seeing The Reignman throw it down after going coast to coast! There’s also an incredible move by Doctor J, a poster dunk by new Lakers coach Darvin Ham, and more great highlights from nine different games, from Looney Tunes B-Ball all the way up to NBA 2K22.
