NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #188 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane and I as we discuss Patch 1.07 for NBA 2K17, drama in the NBA 2K YouTube community, a tidbit about NBA Live 17, and our basketball gaming experiences from the past week.

On this week’s show…

  • In response to a question on Twitter, EA Sports has reiterated that NBA Live 17 will be released in the first quarter of 2017, and that more news will be released closer to the game coming out.
  • Patch 1.07 has come through for NBA 2K17, and seems to primarily be an update for the upcoming eSports tournaments. Still, we wonder why it took 24 hours to post three whole patch notes.
  • We react to some drama in the NBA 2K YouTube community, and compare it to some of the issues we’ve seen in our modding community over the years.
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: Some more enjoyable wins for NLSC THRILLHO in 2K Pro-Am, an epic quadruple-double in MyCAREER, and chasing records.
  • We wrap up Episode #188 of the NLSC Podcast with some NBA discussion, including Klay Thompson’s incredible 60 points in 29 minutes, and Dwyane Wade’s performance with the Chicago Bulls so far.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #187

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #187 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane, Kenny, and myself as we react to the fallout of Park After Dark, offer up further thoughts on the recent NBA 2K17 patches, discuss NBA Live’s social media presence, and catch up on Our Week in Basketball Gaming.

On this week’s show…

  • Park After Dark wasn’t quite as successful as 2K Sports and MyPARK enthusiasts were hoping it would be, with many prominent YouTubers harshly criticising it. We react to the fallout, and offer up a couple of thoughts on the event.
  • There’s been some discontent in our community regarding the recent patches for NBA 2K17. Are the patches messing up the game more than they’re fixing and improving it?
  • Do NBA Live’s social media accounts offer any indication as to what’s happening with NBA Live 17? What will happen with NBA Live Mobile as we get closer to the game’s console comeback?
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: Struggles for NLSC THRILLO, success in MyCAREER, and the best trade in the history of franchise modes in MyLEAGUE.
  • We wrap up Episode #187 of the NLSC Podcast with some good news about Isaiah Austin.

Monday Tip-Off: Crafting NBA Live’s Comeback

Derrick Rose on the New York Knicks in NBA Live 16

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games.

Last week, we received a very small snippet of news about NBA Live 17, courtesy of a brief interview with Senior Producer Mike Mahar. While we still don’t know a lot about what’s happening with NBA Live, we do know that the development team is still working on a console version of the game, and that a release is slated for the first quarter of 2017. We also know that there’s a different team working on NBA Live Mobile (thus its development does not affect the console version), and thanks to Mike’s interview, we’ve discovered that gameplay, animations, and new ways to play certain game modes have been a focus.

Of course, when it comes to future NBA Live releases, the proof will be in the pudding. After all, we’ve heard those promises before, and while the series has made progress since its rocky return with NBA Live 14, there’s still plenty of untapped potential and room for improvement. I would really like to see NBA Live get back to where it once was, and I hope that whatever EA Sports is working on right now will be a big step in the right direction. What do I consider the “right direction”? Well, here’s how I would craft NBA Live’s comeback.

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #186 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane and I as we discuss Patch 1.06 for NBA 2K17, the upcoming Park After Dark event in MyPARK, a tidbit of NBA Live 17 news, and more.

On this week’s show…

  • 2K is presenting the “Park After Dark” event in MyPARK this weekend, with Snoop Dogg making an in-game appearance as DJ Snoopadelic. It’s not really our thing, but it does sound kind of fun for MyPARK players.
  • NBA 2KVR has been announced. Might some of the technology be adapted for use in the main game in future years?
  • NBA 2K17 has received Patch 1.06. Although some issues have been resolved, unfortunately it seems that some new bugs have also arisen, and not everyone is happy with the tweaked gameplay.
  • We’re starting to hear promising bits and pieces about NBA Live 17 from developers on social media. Senior Producer Mike Mahar also had a few things to say about the game in a recent chat to FOX 13 News in Tampa Bay.
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: An enjoyably successful run in 2K Pro-Am, two more quadruple-doubles in MyCAREER, and a surprising lack of loyalty.
  • We wrap up Episode #186 of the NLSC Podcast with some NBA chatter, including the Detroit Pistons’ impending move to a new arena, Zach LaVine’s incredible 360 dunk from the foul line, and Kevin Love’s big first quarter against the Blazers.

Interview with NBA Live Senior Producer Mike Mahar

LeBron James dribbles the basketball in NBA Live 16

FOX 13 News has posted a piece on Orlando native Seann Graddy, who is now the Executive Producer of the Madden series. More relevant to our community however, the article notes that not all of EA Sports’ titles have been as successful as Madden, and concludes with some notes about NBA Live 17, as Senior Producer Mike Mahar was also interviewed.

Although he didn’t give a specific release date for NBA Live 17, Mike did say that the game would be released “sometime in the calendar year 2017” (for the record, EA has listed it as a Q1 release). He also wasn’t able to go into great detail about NBA Live 17 at this time, but did mention that the focus is on improving gameplay and animations, and adding some new ways to play certain game modes.

Mike was also very candid in discussing criticism of NBA Live in recent years, and noted that the development team is listening to (and indeed seeking out) feedback that they can put to good use. You can watch his chat with FOX 13 News’ Chris Cato here.

A couple of NBA Live developers have also been posting about the game on Twitter recently. While they haven’t been able to go into great detail, it would seem that work is progressing quite nicely on the game, and more news might not be too far away. We’ll certainly post any information that we come across, and look to set up some interviews and whatnot as soon as we’re able.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #185

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #185 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane, Kenny, and myself as we discuss recent modding releases, issues with YouTubers getting banned in NBA 2K17, and a few other topics of interest from the past week.

On this week’s show…

  • We tip off Episode #185 of the NLSC Podcast with a round-up of the latest releases from our talented NBA 2K17 modding community. Some excellent retro mods have been created so far!
  • It seems that Patch 1.06 for NBA 2K17 is in the pipeline. What do we expect it to fix? What do we want it to fix?
  • Dime Magazine recently posted a countdown of the ten funniest glitches in NBA 2K. Which ones have we experienced ourselves?
  • There’s been a lot of dissatisfaction with 2K Sports recently, as several YouTubers have been banned for unclear Terms of Service violations. We discuss 2K’s handling of the situation.
  • What are some of our favourite jerseys that aren’t available in NBA 2K17?
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: a reminder that career modes have come a long way since NBA 2K10, and the most recent 2K Pro-Am games for the NLSC THRILLHO squad.
  • We wrap things up with a couple of NBA topics, namely Tim Duncan’s impending jersey retirement, and a record for Aussie NBA players.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #184

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #184 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane and I as we discuss Patch 1.05 for NBA 2K17, offer up some more thoughts on what might be happening with NBA Live 17, and talk about a couple of other topics from the past week.

On this week’s show…

  • We’ve started the ball rolling on our NBA 2K18 Wishlist, and encourage everyone to get involved in posting some constructive feedback for the development team.
  • Off the top of our heads, what are some of the main issues we’d like to see addressed in NBA 2K18?
  • Patch 1.05 has been released for NBA 2K17, addressing several bugs and tuning a few elements of the game. Some fixes are working better than others, but at least the timeout glitch is gone from 2K Pro-Am.
  • New rosters are also coming through for NBA 2K17 again, and a recent update has added Steve Nash back to the 2003 Mavericks and 2005 Suns.
  • What do we make of the radio silence from EA Sports regarding NBA Live 17? What do we think is going to happen with the game, and what are our expectations?
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: tough times and bratty kids in 2K Pro-Am, and a milestone achievement in MyCAREER.
  • We wrap up Episode #184 of the NLSC Podcast with some NBA talk, including Stephen Curry’s record-breaking thirteen three-pointers in a game, and Dwyane Wade’s first game against the Heat.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #182

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #182 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane, Kenny, and myself as we discuss opportunities for NBA Live 17, some more exciting victories in 2K Pro-Am, the start of the 2017 NBA season, and more.

On this week’s show…

  • It appears as though advertising is starting to appear after the third quarter in NBA 2K17. We discuss the controversial practice of in-game advertising in AAA titles.
  • Once again, we touch on the problems with an “always online” approach to modes such as MyCAREER, after a recent PSN outage made it impossible to play.
  • With some of the dissatisfaction gamers have with NBA 2K17 and the way 2K has handled things with VC and so forth, has the door been left open for NBA Live 17?
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: more clutch wins for the NLSC 2K Pro-Am squad, a blossoming rivalry, a trip to MyPARK, and the Walk-On experience.
  • The 2017 NBA season has tipped off! We talk about the first couple of days which saw a triple-double from LeBron James, a huge win for the San Antonio Spurs, big numbers from Anthony Davis, and the official debut of Joel Embiid.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #175

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #175 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! We’re in the final countdown to NBA 2K17, so it’s been another busy week with several previews. Join us as we react to the latest news, share our recent basketball gaming experiences, and talk about a couple of other topics that caught our attention.

On this week’s show…

  • We now know a lot more about what to expect from MyCAREER in NBA 2K17, by way of a developer blog and a trailer. What do we think of this year’s approach?
  • The MyNBA2K17 app is out now, but as of recording, it isn’t much use yet.
  • A couple of new tidbits about MyLEAGUE and MyCAREER have given us some ideas for league expansion. We’re also really glad that there’ll be no four point line.
  • The Arena Authenticity trailer spotlighted some cool presentation elements, but are we particularly hyped about them?
  • We discuss what certainly appears to be a hoax about a PC version of NBA Live 17, and recap what we know so far about the next game from EA Sports.
  • In another social media gaffe, Ronnie 2K continues to alienate basketball gamers who dare to express legitimate complaints about NBA 2K.
  • Our Week in Basketball Gaming includes some of our final sessions of 2K Pro-Am – though there might be a couple more – and a return to NBA 2K11 for the Jordan Challenge. Also, a bit of talk about NBA Live 16 (yes, it’s been a while).
  • We wrap up Episode #175 of the NLSC Podcast with another game of Trivia Time!

The Friday Five: 5 Things That Would Help Modding

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

In last week’s Friday Five, I discussed how our modding community could improve in terms of its attitude and practices. Having put that very important message out there, I wanted to cover more of a modder Wishlist in this week’s Five. These are the features and resources that I believe would really help facilitate modding, allowing us to create even better mods for the current generation of basketball video games.

As many of you are probably aware, many of the file formats have changed since the PC version of NBA 2K became a port of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version. On top of that, NBA 2K’s roster files have never been particularly modder-friendly compared to the DBF files that the PC versions of NBA Live utilised. Of course, NBA Live itself doesn’t support modding right now, being a console-only release. This isn’t intended to be a comprehensive list of ideas that would help out the modding community – I only have the five points to work with, after all – but they are the first that come to mind for me, and are intended to tip off the conversation.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #171

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #171 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! It’s our longest episode in a while as we had a lot to talk about this week, from the first teaser trailer for NBA 2K17, to the Boomers vs. Team USA. Also, some of our favourite memories of Dynasty Mode, and our most recent sessions of 2K Pro-Am.

On this week’s show…

  • The first official teaser trailer for NBA 2K17 has been released. We react to the trailer, and some of us struggle to correctly articulate the name of the US national anthem.
  • On the subject of teasers and news, we also discuss the problem with gaming sites and YouTubers who engage in clickbait, tricking their fellow basketball gamers with fake news and completely unrelated content.
  • Will an increase in video game prices and the rise of microtransactions result in longer development cycles for sports games?
  • What are some of our favourite moments in Dynasty Mode/franchise modes over the years? Which was the best edition of the mode?
  • In our Week in Basketball Gaming: Possible burnout on 2K Pro-Am, and perspective on some of the improvements to shooting mechanics in recent years.
  • The Orlando Magic have unveiled what is perhaps our new least favourite alternate jersey. Bring on the Nike contract!
  • Australia had a fine performance against the USA in the preliminary round of the 2016 Olympic basketball tournament. We’re still picking the USA to win the gold, but are we more optimistic about the Boomers’ chances of winning a medal?
  • We wrap up Episode #171 of the NLSC Podcast with another edition of Trivia Time!

NLSC Podcast – Episode #170

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #170 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Unfortunately, we encountered some technical difficulties with the software we normally use to record the show, and its temporary replacement definitely isn’t as good. Nevertheless, we hope you’ll enjoy another episode in which we discuss the latest NBA 2K17 previews, recap our week in basketball gaming, and play our favourite podcast game.

On this week’s show…

  • Two new NBA 2K17 screenshots have officially been released, featuring Team USA 2016 and the pre-order exclusive 1992 Dream Team. The screenshots are drawing some mixed reactions to say the least, so we chime in with our own critique.
  • Once again, we lament the lack of news about NBA 2K17, which isn’t helping us get hyped for this year’s game from Visual Concepts. Who is directing the MyCAREER story this year? We need to know!
  • For anyone who is still speculating on whether EA is planning on dropping the console version of NBA Live in favour of the mobile platform, their latest investor release mentions a console release for Live in Q1 2017.
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: Bratty behaviour in 2K Pro-Am, and no, not by us. We’re left asking ourselves, is the mode sim enough for our tastes? Also, can’t we all just get along?
  • The basketball tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games will be tipping off soon. Team USA seems like a safe bet for the gold (what a bold prediction!), but what about our team, the Australian Boomers?
  • We wrap up Episode #170 of the NLSC Podcast with this week’s edition of Trivia Time!

NLSC Podcast – Episode #168

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #168 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Arcane and I are a two-man booth this week, while Kenny is out of town celebrating his 30th birthday. With a lack of meaningful NBA news, it’s a shorter episode, but the past week has delivered us some promising details on NBA 2K17, and an NBA Live 17 rumour.

On this week’s show…

  • After a Monday Tip-Off column lamenting the lack of a preview season, we received a developer blog on the improvements to MyGM and MyLEAGUE in NBA 2K17. We recap all the details, and offer up our thoughts.
  • An interesting rumour is making the rounds regarding BDotADot possibly providing some motion capture for NBA Live 17. Could we see a lot more signature animations, when the game drops in early 2017?
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: A recap of last week’s 2K Pro-Am games featuring NLSC Greatness, recent activities in MyCAREER, and a bargain on a LeBron James card in MyTEAM.
  • We wrap up Episode #168 of the NLSC Podcast with a long-term Bold Prediction by Kenny that turned out to be correct. Unfortunately, he isn’t around to gloat about it.

Monday Tip-Off: Where Is The Preview Season?

Paul George with the layup in NBA 2K16

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games.

If you’re a regular listener of the NLSC Podcast, you’ll have heard me describe the current time of year as a very quiet period. After the initial flurry of deals, all of the major free agent signings are over and done with. There’s been Summer League play, of course, but here in the basketball gaming community, we’re anxiously awaiting the start of the preview season. With NBA Live 17 being pushed back to early 2017, we’re obviously not going to hear much about it for some time. NBA 2K17 will be dropping in mid September, but details on that release are similarly scarce.

That isn’t anything too out of the ordinary, though. Even when both titles have been released around the same time, Visual Concepts has often waited until almost the last minute before finally revealing the juiciest details on the next NBA 2K game. I would suggest that a lot of the time, the information has been worth waiting for, and the success of the series certainly speaks for itself. At the same time, I miss the days of getting a steady flow of information, and feeling really hyped about the upcoming releases.

As such, I find myself asking: where is the preview season?

NLSC Podcast – Episode #167

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #167 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! We’re coming up to the really slow part of the offseason, but we do have some news to discuss this week in the form of a new NBA Live 16 roster update, as well as some more 2K Pro-Am games to recap. Also, a significant rule change, and the retirement of a future Hall of Famer.

On this week’s show…

  • A new NBA Live 16 roster has been pushed through, featuring pre-Draft transactions such as Derrick Rose to New York. Unfortunately, it seems that no further offseason updates are planned at this time.
  • Development of NBA Live 17 is still underway, as EA reps have been posting photos of rookie face scans that are being conducted during Summer League play.
  • Our latest 2K Pro-Am sessions have yielded more fun and frustration, including an impressive win with a very undersized centre, and a somewhat angry dunk. A couple more community members have also recently joined in the fun.
  • The NBA has announced further changes to the Hack-a-Shaq rules. A lot of fans are criticising the decision, but we’ve got a very different take on the matter.
  • Tim Duncan announced his retirement with little fanfare, walking away from the NBA in the most Tim Duncan way possible. We reflect on the career of the player most now consider to be the greatest power forward of all-time.
  • Episode #167 of the NLSC Podcast ends with our new favourite game, Trivia Time! Play along at home and answer this week’s questions about NBA Live, NBA 2K, and NBA Jam.
