We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on how the door has seemingly closed on NBA Live.

Although NBA Live has remained dormant since 2019, I’ve still had plenty of reasons to write about it. Older releases have re-entered my rotation, and I’ve developed more of an appreciation for them. There are some that I’d like to dust off more often, and even mod. I’ve talked about the opportunities the series has had, and some of the ones that it’s squandered. I’ve lamented how both the series and its long-time fans deserved better. Above all, I’ve continued to champion the need for alternatives, and noted how despite numerous setbacks, somehow the door has remained open for NBA Live.

However, with the shutdown of NBA Live 19’s servers and no new release on the horizon, it feels as though the door has finally closed. I could be wrong here, and it’s certainly not the outcome that I wanted. I still believe in the importance of having at least two viable sim options on the market, and I’ll continue to advocate for that. Even if a return for NBA Live is as highly unlikely as it seems, there’s arguably still a better chance of that happening than another developer stepping up to try to compete with NBA 2K. For now though, with online support for NBA Live 19 ending and NBA Live Mobile being the last vestige of the series, the door has seemingly slammed shut.

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #514 of the NLSC Podcast!

NBA 2K24 is prompting gamers to accept a new Terms of Service that includes updated clauses regarding class action lawsuits and digital purchases. We discuss how the move has further eroded goodwill, especially as the language comes across as threatening in the wake of recent legal action against Take-Two, and opting out is a deliberately challenging process. While noting NBA 2K’s fall from grace as the darling of basketball gaming, we also criticise the silence from influencers and much of the gaming media, as well as the apologist rhetoric that some gamers are spouting. In short, it’s not an issue that basketball gamers should allow to be swept under the rug!

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #506 of the NLSC Podcast!

A class action lawsuit is accusing Take-Two of theft, specifically in regards to NBA 2K’s predatory practices. In particular, it notes the loss of VC balance when the servers are shut down after 27 months. While we aren’t lawyers, we certainly do have some thoughts on the situation, as does the community! We also discuss the use of Cronus Zen controllers, and other methods of cheating in NBA 2K online. After all, as much as a technical fix is in order, there are other contributing factors that must be addressed. Meanwhile, comments on our YouTube channel have proven that people have some interesting interpretations of EA Sports’ famous slogan.

This week, I’m tipping things off with my thoughts on mobile basketball gaming, and why I’m not a fan of it myself.

NBA Live is not dead. I don’t say that because I believe that the series is poised to make a big comeback – though every so often, there are hints that it might be a slim possibility – but rather because the name does technically live on through NBA Live Mobile. I do actually have NBA Live Mobile installed on my phone, but it’s not part of my basketball gaming rotation. Although I’ve seen fit to continue installing it as I’ve upgraded to a couple of new phones over the years, I’ve barely touched it except to get screenshots.

The same goes for the mobile version of NBA Jam. I posted a brief but positive review of the Android release over a decade ago, but it hasn’t been a regular in my rotation either. As for the mobile versions of NBA 2K, I haven’t ever bothered to buy and play them. Indeed, since I gave up on getting the face scan to work, I no longer even install the companion app for the console/PC releases! I’m not here to bash mobile gaming, basketball or otherwise. I’m all for developers exploring different platforms, and if you enjoy those releases, more power to you! However, I do have an aversion to mobile basketball gaming, and frankly, I don’t think it’ll ever win me over.

This week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays is full of dunks, but I think you’ll agree that in real life and in video games alike, it’s difficult to go past aerial artistry. Some of the plays leading up to the slams are mesmerising in their own right, and once again, a variety of titles are represented in the countdown. In particular, it’s great to see less talked about games such as NBA Live Mobile and NCAA March Madness 2001 in the highlights. It’s also obvious that my NBA 2K14 kick hasn’t ended just yet.

Needless to say, this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays features some entertaining highlights from the newly released NBA 2K22. However, even with the excitement of a new game, it’s clear that plenty of older titles are still getting a run. From NBA Live 06 and NBA Live 10 to NBA 2K10 and NBA 2K14, a variety of old favourites remain in the rotation, producing an array of impressive plays. Dunks, trick shots, and crafty moves are all on display in another Top 10 countdown that I’m sure everyone will enjoy.

The highlights keep coming in the latest NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week! As always, this week’s countdown features great moments from a variety of basketball video games, including the first appearance of NBA Live 09. Dunks and alley-oops were understandably in vogue, with Dennis Rodman providing a rather unexpected highlight! You may also recognise a couple of the highlights from recent NLSC Community Showdowns. Episode #359 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

The announcement of Giannis Antetokounmpo as the new face of NBA Live Mobile has piqued our interest in the success of the game. As it turns out, it’s performing even better than we realised. This leads us to reflect on how it’s kept the NBA Live brand alive, and what this means for a future console/PC release. The fifteenth anniversary of Kobe Bryant’s historic 81-point game inspires us to not only look back at the achievement, but its impact on the virtual hardwood. We discuss the idea of such performances being described as “something out of a video game”, and the difficulty in replicating those feats. The need for a new challenge mode also comes up. In the mailbag this week, we’re talking about NBA Live’s turning point, and a fantasy scenario involving an upcoming retro roster mod for NBA 2K11.

• Patch 1.15 has come through for NBA Live 19. We discuss the latest changes, recap some of the other additions and fixes in recent patches, and give our thoughts on where the game is at after a couple of months.
• EA Sports recently announced that NBA Live Mobile is the most downloaded basketball game this year. We reflect on how it’s helped the brand, even if it’s not something we’re into ourselves.
• NBA 2K19 has also received another update recently, namely Patch 1.06. Unfortunately we still haven’t seen the functionality we want to see patched back in for 2K Pro-Am, but there have been some other noteworthy and welcome changes.
• The in-universe value of Virtual Currency in NBA 2K19’s Neighborhood is truly astonishing this year. We note some of the oddities and issues with the exchange rate.
• Could a new college football game be paving the way for other college sports titles, including basketball? Can a sports game without licensing succeed in 2018?
• Our Week in Basketball Gaming included setting records in MyCAREER, playing with WNBA players and taking control of courts in NBA Live 19, and trying to unlock a team that’s close to our hearts in Basketball Classics.
• We wrap up Episode #267 of the NLSC Podcast with this week’s NBA talk. Topics include surprising results in the East and West, standout rookies, and more thoughts on Carmelo Anthony.

• The final two pre-order bonuses for NBA 2K17 have been confirmed, with one of them being the 1992 Dream Team (Charles Barkley included!). We discuss whether or not it’s a fair move to make content like that pre-order exclusive.
• We also note that Danilo Gallinari will appear on the Italian cover of NBA 2K17, and give our thoughts on the first official screenshot featuring (most of) Team USA 2016.

• Moving on to some NBA topics, we discuss the NBA’s decision to move the 2017 All-Star Weekend from Charlotte, due to the ongoing issues with the HB2 bill.
• NBA Legend Nate Thurmond passed away last week. He was before our time, but we still have a few things to say in tribute to the first NBA player to ever register a quadruple-double.
• If you want to pick up a Kevin Durant Oklahoma City Thunder jersey, there are some excellent bargains going right now that won’t even set you back a dollar.
• Amar’e Stoudemire has called it a career, so we reminisce about some of STAT’s highlights.

Following the initial soft launch in Canada, NBA Live Mobile is now available worldwide. The game, which is available free for Android and iOS devices, features five-on-five gameplay and card-based team building, similar to Ultimate Team in the console versions of NBA Live. Not unlike Ultimate Team, NBA Live Mobile does feature microtransactions, for anyone who wishes to spend real money on immediate boosts.

Gameplay consists of Live Events, which are skills challenges that are inspired by what’s happening in the real NBA, as well as a two minute quarter in-game scenarios. Modes include Head-to-Head games, Season Mode, Friends Matches, and League play. Star players from yesterday and today are included in NBA Live Mobile, with Special Abilities providing enhanced versions of players that will give your team an extra boost.

Once again, NBA Live Mobile is available through the Play Store for Android, and the App Store for iOS. A console version of NBA Live 17 is currently slated for release in early 2017; we’ll try to get some more information on that as soon as we can.
