We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on the attainability of the NBA license for video game developers and publishers.

As Dee and I discussed on last week’s NLSC Podcast, we have some concerns when it comes to NBA The Run. While we’re happy to see another basketball video game in the space – one that has the NBA license, no less – we’re not so thrilled about it being an exclusively online PvP title. The snippets of gameplay that we’ve seen so far have also left us feeling sceptical. Irrespective of how successful NBA The Run turns out to be – and again, we absolutely want to see alternatives to NBA 2K – it may not be the game for us. That’s just the way it goes, sometimes.

However, in a way, NBA The Run has already enjoyed a measure of success. What began as an unlicensed streetball game comprised solely of fictional characters now has the NBA license. More to the point, the NBA reached out to Play By Play Studios to discuss a partnership. Obviously that was great news for the game that started life as The Run: Got Next, but it also bodes well for other developers, and ultimately us as gamers. It demonstrates that the NBA isn’t interested in an exclusive deal with 2K or any other developer, and that they’re willing to work with smaller studios. In short, if you’re developing a basketball video game, the NBA license appears to be attainable.

Was my last round-up of basketball gaming highlights on the NLSC YouTube channel really back in March? It appears so, which confirms two things. One, 2025 flew by way too fast. Two, my resolution to regularly post bulletins spotlighting our basketball gaming highlights hasn’t been going as well as I intended! With that being said, here’s a post to get you caught up on what’s been going on with the NLSC YouTube channel in recent months.

As you may know, Dee and I are currently playing an Association in NBA 2K9 with the Chicago Bulls. We made this decision after a few sessions with both NBA Live 09 and NBA 2K9, in which we tried out a handful of teams. Dee has shared the best moments from those preliminary games, as well as our Association so far. He’s also uploaded highlights from our other co-op basketball gaming sessions and head-to-head games with community members, including a 1985 showdown in NBA 2K13, a clash of All-Decade teams in NBA Live 2000, and a game between Pitt and Georgetown in NCAA Basketball 10.

Dee has been playing the most recent NBA 2K games more than I have, and he’s shared some fantastic highlights from those sessions. Those reels include Victor Wembanyama scoring 75 points, Paige Bueckers showing off her bag, top moments from the first 10 games of a Legends vs. Current NBA MyNBA, and other NBA 2K25 and NBA 2K26 gameplay videos. You’ll also find some footage of NBA Superstars for the arcade featuring Anthony Edwards, and a reel of the 2010 Suns vs 2004 Timberwolves in NBA 2K14.

Meanwhile, as I wrapped up Year 6 in my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER, I posted highlights from each round of the 2019 Playoffs. I’ve also shared highlights of my games of NBA Live 18 and NBA Live 19 with 2025 and 2026 rosters respectively. Speaking of custom rosters, I also posted highlights from a game of NBA 2K6 featuring the 1997 Bulls and Rockets, and Michael Jordan being added to the Wizards in an NBA Live 96 work-in-progress roster. There was a new entry in the NBA 2K14 Retro Series featuring the 1971 Lakers and Hawks, and I also made tributes for Lenny Wilkens and Rodney Rogers in NBA Live 19 Ultimate Team and NBA 2K17 respectively.

As you’ve hopefully seen if you’re subscribed to our YouTube channel, Dee and I have uploaded several basketball gaming highlight reels recently. Between covering NBA 2K25 news and our other original content, I’ve neglected to share those uploads on the front page, so here’s a round-up of our latest work!

With my in-depth retrospective of 24/7 in this week’s Wayback Wednesday, it only made sense to share highlights from my playthroughs of the mode in NBA 2K6 and NBA 2K7. Both the Entertainer’s Basketball Classic and Legends Charity Tournament were fun ways to cap off a couple of modes that I was glad to finally delve into.

In my previous YouTube round-up bulletin, I shared Dee’s highlights from a game of NBA Superstars between the Celtics and Clippers. It wasn’t the only matchup that he played, as he also had a fun time showing out with Ja Morant and the Grizzlies, as you’ll see in this reel.

Dee and I have been making a point to connect on Parsec as often as possible as of late, and he’s compiled highlight reels from some extremely fun basketball gaming sessions. That includes a showdown of underdogs in NBA ShootOut 2004, and in a nod to the new Steph Era in NBA 2K25’s MyNBA Eras, a game between the Cavaliers and Warriors in NBA 2K17.

I’ve also uploaded highlights from a game of NBA Live 09 featuring the default placeholder Oklahoma City branding, and two games of NBA Street Homecourt: one between squads of WNBA stars, and one featuring the Coatesville All-Stars taking on the Baltimore All-Stars at Cloverdale.

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #541 of the NLSC Podcast!

The latest NBA 2K25 Courtside Report has delivered the details on MyCAREER and MyPLAYER in this year’s game. While some of the news is definitely promising on paper, we still have our doubts. Indeed, the lengthy grind and pushy recurrent revenue mechanics remain an elephant in the room that far too many content creators and influencers don’t want to acknowledge, and sometimes even actively downplay. Nevertheless, we join the community in reacting to the latest NBA 2K25 previews. We also asked the community what they’d pay for a home port of NBA Superstars, and recap some of the excellent retro pickups that a couple of our fellow gamers have recently scored.

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #540 of the NLSC Podcast!

August tipped off with the first gameplay trailer for NBA 2K25, as well as a courtside report outlining the key improvements that we can expect to see. This week, we join the community in sharing our thoughts on what we saw in the trailer, as well as our reactions to the changes, additions, and promises that were described in the developer blog. To that end, we also note some familiar claims and talking points from previous preview seasons. We also discuss the new arcade-exclusive title NBA Superstars – a release heavily inspired by NBA Jam, and featuring the legendary Tim Kitzrow on commentary – and provide detailed hands-on impressions following a lengthy session with the game.

In case this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays wasn’t enough exciting virtual hardwood action for you, Dee and I have uploaded another couple of videos! Dee has posted footage of a full game in NBA Superstars, while I’ve uploaded an NBA 2K6 Xbox 360 highlight reel featuring the 1992 Dream Team.

For those who are unaware, NBA Superstars is a new arcade basketball video game by Play Mechanix. It’s inspired by NBA Jam, right down to featuring the legendary Tim Kitzrow on commentary. Dee found the game at a local arcade, and took on the Los Angeles Clippers with his Boston Celtics. We’ll be talking about it on the next episode of the NLSC Podcast, so stay tuned!

Since I began my retro kick with NBA 2K6 for Xbox 360, I’ve been tinkering with some minimalist roster projects. I have a work-in-progress roster featuring 20 new Legends – that’s as many as you can create in the game – and that facilitated a re-creation of the 1992 Dream Team’s famous scrimmage. It’s another example of how minimalist modding can still set up fun new scenarios in a variety of basketball video games.

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #530 of the NLSC Podcast!

If a basketball video game featuring modern technology but a past setting – from rosters to modes to presentation – was ever to be released, which year would you want it to be? This week, we join the community in sharing our choices of legendary seasons to re-live on the virtual hardwood. We also react to the announcement of NBA Superstars, an upcoming arcade basketball game in the style of NBA Jam. What do we make of the gameplay in the trailer, and can it fill a void in the basketball gaming space? We also discuss having interactions with former NBA players on social media – both positive and negative – and provide a PSA for our fellow basketball gamers who may be having a rough time right now.
