NLSC Podcast #372: Sports Gaming vs. Competitive Gaming

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #372 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

Roster editing has come to Basketball Classics, and we’re very impressed with what Josh and Dave have managed to implement. Meanwhile, the latest patch for NBA 2K21 Next Gen is slightly less exciting, but nevertheless contains a couple of important fixes. Taking a suggestion from Twitter, this week’s main discussion concerns the difference between sports gaming and competitive gaming, and the effects that the latter has had on the NBA 2K series. We talk about how gameplay and the online scene in NBA 2K could improve, and how NBA Live could capitalise on the situation. In this week’s mailbag, we reflect on Acclaim’s NBA Jam games, and the quality of sequels.

Join in the conversation in the comments below, or here in the Forum! Additionally, feel free to hit us up with any feedback on the episode, as well as mailbag questions and topic suggestions for future shows. NBA 2K21 Next Gen Patch 1.08 Now Available

NBA 2K21 Next Gen Patch 1.08

Patch 1.08 is now available for NBA 2K21 Next Gen. As always, it should come through automatically as long as your PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S is online. If it doesn’t, try restarting your console, or checking for updates manually.

The latest update is considerably smaller than the previous patch, and is more of a hotfix to address a few issues. The full notes are as follows:

  • Improved player lighting and shadows in The City during daytime hours
  • Improved an issue that was causing slow bootup times for some PS5 users. More improvements to come
  • Addressed a potential hang in MyNBA Online when accepting trade offers

Details on Patch 1.08 have been added to the update history for NBA 2K21 Next Gen over in our Wiki. Feel free to share your impressions in the comments, as well as join in the discussion taking place here in the NLSC Forum.

Basketball Classics 2.0 Includes Roster Editing

Basketball Classics 2.0 Released

Basketball Classics 2.0 is now available on Steam! If you already own Namo Gamo’s fantastic retro-style hoops game, the update should come through automatically. If it doesn’t, try restarting your Steam client, or checking for updates manually.

The latest update adds long-awaited roster editing functionality. In addition to modifying existing player names, appearances, and attributes, the roster editor allows us to create brand new teams and players from scratch. A variety of player faces are available, with customisable hair and facial hair, accessories, and tattoos. Up to three custom rosters can be saved alongside the default roster, and custom rosters can be used in the game’s Season mode.

Josh and Dave discussed their plans for roster editing during their most recent appearance on the NLSC Podcast. You can listen to that in-depth chat with them in Episodes #342 and #343, during which we brainstormed some roster editing ideas. As for Basketball Classics 2.0, if you don’t already own it, I highly recommend picking it up on Steam. It’s currently $9.99 US, and well worth the price if you’re a basketball gamer with an appreciation for retro-inspired titles.

Similar to the recent patch for NBA 2K21 Next Gen, the latest Current Gen patch includes player likeness updates and fixes for various issues in MyTEAM. Although the specific players aren’t mentioned in the notes, it’s a safe bet that they’re the same ones that were updated on Next Gen. It also adds new decorations to 2K Beach in MyCAREER, and prepares the mode for some upcoming events.

The full notes for Patch 1.10 for NBA 2K21 Current Gen can be found below, and a full update history for the game has been documented here in our Wiki. The Friday Five: 5 Small Ways Games Went That Extra Mile

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. This week’s Five is a list of five small ways that basketball games have gone that extra mile in their details.

The small details in basketball video games are a funny thing. It’s possible to obsess over them too much, to the point of nitpicking. Nothing makes us appear to be an unpleasable fanbase quite like overreacting to a minor error or missing detail that most people would never notice, and hardly ruins the entire game. At the same time, attention to detail is important, and we do notice when games go that extra mile in order to be fun and immersive. Even if it’s purely cosmetic, we’re likely to say “hey, that’s awesome” once we’ve seen it.

It may be a detail that we can barely see during gameplay, but it adds authenticity that we can appreciate when replays take us closer to the action. It may be functionality that improves the quality of the experience, or contributes to the atmosphere. In some cases, it may even be content that gets patched in, adding a level of detail that we didn’t expect. Whatever the case may be, the developers went that extra mile to make the game better in small ways. I’m sure we all have our favourite examples of little details that impressed us when we discovered them, and so today I’m sharing five of mine, in no particular order. Hats off to the developers for these efforts!

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #362 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

A bevy of retro season roster mods are being produced at the moment, which we’re excited to see. The fact that there are a couple of 2005 season mods out or in the works reminds us that time is marching on, and our nostalgia is getting old! We also have some advice for getting big projects done and released. Meanwhile, NBA 2K21 Current Gen and Next Gen have both received new patches, so we briefly discuss some of the changes. This week’s main discussion is a deep dive into shooting mechanics: the history and evolution, the best and worst concepts, and everything in between. In the latest mailbag, we discuss the forthcoming Space Jam sequel, and consider another What If scenario.

Basketball Classics v1.2.2 Update Released

Basketball Classics v1.2.2 Update Released

I’m a bit late in posting this, but Basketball Classics v1.2.2 is now available! If you own the game, then the update will (and probably already has) come through automatically. As usual, if you ever encounter any issues with automatic updates on Steam, try restarting your client.

The latest version of the game includes 2020 season rosters, which are available for both Season and Quick Play. A number of fixes have also been implemented, based on gamer feedback.

In the bulletin, Dave and Josh mention that there’s been lots of activity behind the scenes with Basketball Classics. A new major release is in the pipeline but isn’t quite ready yet, which is why the guys have pushed through this minor update to address some issues in the meantime. However, we can expect roster editing tools in a future release.

Basketball Classics v1.2.2 is available to purchase here on Steam. We’ve had Dave and Josh on the NLSC Podcast three times before, most recently for a two-part chat back in October last year. If you haven’t caught those episodes yet, be sure to tune in for insights into Basketball Classics, as well as a great discussion on the hallmarks of good and bad basketball video games.

NBA 2K21 Patch 1.07 Released; New Faces, Neighborhood

NBA 2K21 Patch 1.07

Patch 1.07 has come through for the Current Gen version of NBA 2K21. It’s currently available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and should be coming through on PC soon. As always, the patch should download automatically. If it doesn’t, try restarting your console or Steam client, or checking for updates manually.

Unfortunately there are no patch notes as of writing; if any are provided, I’ll be sure to add them. Users over on Reddit have identified several player likeness updates however, as well as new courts. The Neighborhood decorations in MyCAREER have also been updated for the New Year. Based on the notes from Patch 1.06, it’s unlikely that there were many other significant changes.

If you do notice any other changes following Patch 1.07 for NBA 2K21, let me know in the comments, or in the official discussion topic in our Forum. I’ve also updated the patch history for NBA 2K21 Current Gen in our Wiki, with what information we have so far. Credit goes out to ljfabs and others users on Reddit for the list of likeness and court updates, which you can find below.

January 11th Update: The patch is now available for PC as well.

NBA 2K21 Next Gen Patch 1.04

It is much smaller than the previous patch, consisting of bug fixes and a cosmetic update. The following patch notes were shared via Twitter:

  • Updates to the new Holiday City
  • MyNBA: Fixed a number of hangs/issues reported by the community relating to custom rosters and/or custom team designs

I’ve added the Patch 1.04 notes to the NBA 2K21 Next Gen update history in our Wiki. As always, feel free to leave any impressions in the comments below, as well as join in the discussion here in the Forum.

NLSC Podcast #354: 2K Giveth, & 2K Taketh Away

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #354 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this week’s show.

Where can you learn about the differences between versions of Tecmo Super NBA Basketball? Our podcast, that’s where! Patch 1.03 for NBA 2K21 Next Gen is also out, and it’s full of fixes and gameplay tweaks. There are minimal differences, but as we note, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The impending shutdown of the NBA 2K19 servers leads to a discussion about lost features, old games still being sold at full price, and a huge opportunity for 2K to generate goodwill. In this week’s mailbag, we’re talking bad ratings, not feeling like we’re in control in newer 2K titles, and our non-basketball gaming habits.

What’s your take on this week’s conversation? Sound off in the comments section below, or join in the discussion here in the Forum! Additionally, feel free to hit us up with any feedback on the episode, as well as mailbag questions and topic suggestions for future episodes.
