The Friday Five: 5 Retro Teams I’d Like To See in NBA 2K (Part 4)

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. This week’s Five is yet another list of five retro teams that I’d like to see added to NBA 2K.

As the title of this week’s column indicates, this is Part 4 in an ongoing series offering up suggestions for new retro teams to be added in future NBA 2K games. Reiterating a point I made in Parts 1, 2, and 3 of the series, with so many noteworthy teams in the game already – especially past champions, their opponents, and many other significant squads – the door is now open for some unorthodox but nevertheless interesting teams from years gone by. In some cases, the addition of these retro teams allows for a few more notable players to be included, enhancing MyTEAM and retro roster projects.

Once again, I’ll state that my opinion still stands regarding the retro teams mentioned in the previous three articles. I would still like to see those teams included, so these five new squads aren’t intended to replace my previous suggestions. Also, I’m making these suggestions under the assumption that most (if not all) of the major players can be licensed to appear, otherwise it would defeat the purpose of adding them to the game. Quite a few of the players from these teams are in the game already though, which means that some of these suggestions may indeed be feasible. Without any further ado, let’s get to another five retro teams that’d be fun to have in NBA 2K.

The Friday Five: 5 Retro Teams I’d Like To See in NBA 2K (Part 3)

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. This week’s Five is a list of five more retro teams that I’d like to see added in future NBA 2K games.

With a large roster of retro teams already in NBA 2K, you’d think it might be tough to suggest new squads to include. A lot of the obvious teams are already in the game, as Visual Concepts has managed to license a lot of the great championship teams, their opponents, and other prominent and successful squads. It’s getting to the point where they are adding some more unorthodox but still interesting teams to the game, which opens up the door for some potentially unusual suggestions. With that in mind, there are quite a few NBA Legends who could be celebrated with squads that would make fun and intriguing additions to the selection of retro teams in NBA 2K.

Please note that as per the title of this column, this is Part 3 in an ingoing series where I list the retro teams that I’d like to see in NBA 2K. While not all of the teams that I mentioned in Part 1 and Part 2 have been added to the game, I’ve already discussed them, and my desire to see them in NBA 2K still stands. I’m looking to discuss a new list of retro teams each time, so in no way do my latest picks cancel out the ones that I’ve previously mentioned. I’m also making these suggestions under the assumption that Visual Concepts will be able to license most (if not all) of the key players, though in many cases, they’re already in the game. With that being said, let’s get to the list!

Monday Tip-Off: Building My 90s All-Stars Ultimate Team

Ultimate Team: Scottie Pippen 90s All-Stars (NBA Live 18)

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games. This week, I’m tipping things off with an update on my efforts to build a team of 90s All-Stars in NBA Live 18’s Ultimate Team.

As I’ve noted in previous articles and in episodes of the NLSC Podcast, my current mode of choice in NBA Live 18 is Ultimate Team. Unfortunately, Franchise mode just isn’t where it needs to be yet, and while I do like the concept of LIVE Events and LIVE Run, living in Australia, I’ve found online play to be very choppy so far in NBA Live 18. While I obviously hope NBA Live 19 will see an improvement in both of those areas, for the moment I am enjoying playing Ultimate Team. I was taken in by the mode when it debuted in NBA Live 14, so even if those other modes were more appealing to me right now, I know that I’d still be spending some time with LUT.

I spent a considerable amount of time with Ultimate Team back in NBA Live 15, and managed to put together a team comprised of 90s Legends. As Legends packs began to be released for NBA Live 18, I decided that I wanted to try that again, especially as it’s currently still the only way to play with Legends in NBA Live. After drawing Scottie Pippen a few weeks back, those efforts got off to a very promising start. After adding John Stockton and Karl Malone last week, I found myself with a formidable starting five that’s reminiscent of the old 90s All-Stars squad. While I’m quite satisfied with that lineup, I wanted to round out the bench with some more 90s players.

March Modness: 1995/1996 Mod for NBA Live 2004 v3.0 Released

95/96 Season Mod for NBA Live 2004 Cover

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to March Modness so far! I’ve been working on a few more things myself, and to that end, have put the finishing touches on v3.0 of my 1995/1996 Season Mod for NBA Live 2004. Key features of the new release are as follows:

  • Final 1996 Season Rosters
  • Updated Logos
  • Updated Jerseys
  • Updated Courts & Stadiums
  • Over 100 New Player Faces
  • Fixed Bodytypes
  • Some Birth Years Updated for Dynasty Mode

A big thanks to Murat and pksts for the new logos, faces, jerseys, and courts that can be found in v3.0! Thanks to their contributions, this release is the most complete version of the 1996 Season Mod for NBA Live 2004 so far. I may make some further adjustments here and there at some point, but the mod is now more or less how I envisioned it all those years ago.

Download the 1996 Season Mod here! You can also find the support topic for all of my NBA Live 2004 releases here in the Forum. If any bugs are discovered with v3.0, I’ll try to get a hotfix out as soon as I possibly can. If I do get around to doing anything else with the mod as far as further additions or enhancements, I’ll include them in a potential v4.0 release. For now, I hope you enjoy a new release for an old favourite!

The Friday Five: 5 Retro Teams I’d Like To See in NBA 2K (Part 2)

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. This week’s Five is another list of five retro teams that I’d like to see added to NBA 2K.

Since I talked about some of the worst classic teams to be included in NBA 2K in last week’s Friday Five, it only makes sense to switch focus to some of the retro teams that I’d like to see in future games. There are quite a number of old teams that would be fun to play with in NBA 2K, and indeed, I posted five I was hoping to see added way back in August 2016. As it happened, a couple of the teams I mentioned have since made their way into the game (along with one from around the same era), so it seems that we should never say “never”.

As such, this is part two of what will probably end up being a series of articles on the retro teams that I’d like to see added in future NBA 2K games. While some teams are sadly unlikely due to an inability to license specific players, I’m making my picks based on the assumption that Visual Concepts would be able to find a way to come to terms with them. After all, it’s a list of teams I’d like to see in the game, not strictly a list of teams I think we feasibly could see. With that out of the way, and considering that I’d still like to see my previous suggestions added, let’s take a look at five more retro teams that I’d like to see in NBA 2K’s roster.

The Friday Five: 5 Worst Classic Teams in NBA 2K

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. This week’s Five is a list of what I believe are the five worst classic teams in NBA 2K.

Since being added as part of the Jordan Challenge back in NBA 2K11, classic teams have become a staple of the NBA 2K series. Although they aren’t necessarily a focal point of the games, it’s gotten to the point where they aren’t thought of as being bonus content, but an essential feature. The selection of classic teams has grown from ten Chicago Bulls squads and their opponents to a variety of memorable teams from the 60s through to the modern era. Squads include champions, their Finals opponents, and an assortment of other teams of note. We now even have All-Time teams to play with.

However, some of the classic teams are puzzling inclusions. That’s not to say they’re bad teams – it’s not as though Visual Concepts have seen fit to include the 1973 76ers or 2012 Bobcats – but they lack the appeal of other retro squads. In the case of some classic teams, the specific season has been an odd choice, or the loss of likeness rights and subsequent removal of players has rendered them far less appealing. Whatever the case may be, these classic teams are prime candidates to be removed, or replaced with more interesting squads whose rosters may be more complete. Without any further ado, here are my picks for the five worst classic teams in NBA 2K.

New Classic & All-Time Teams in NBA 2K18; Latest Screens

NBA 2K18 All-Time Teams

If you love the historical content in NBA 2K – as I’m sure most of us do – then 2K has revealed some fantastic news. NBA 2K18 is going to feature All-Time Teams for all 30 NBA teams, comprised of the best players in each team’s history. Not only that, but sixteen new classic teams are also set to be added in this year’s game. At this time, the new historical squads and the all-time rosters have yet to be announced.

All-Time Teams mods have been very popular over the years, dating back to the early days of NBA Live patching. As such, it’s very cool to hear that they’ll be in the game by default. Similarly, it’s been a few years since any new classic NBA teams have been added to the selection in NBA 2K, so that also comes as very welcome news. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long to find out which teams have been added, and which players made the cut for the all-time squads.

NBA 2K17 did include the Dream Team as a pre-order bonus last year, and a selection of All-Time College Teams were also released as paid downloadable content. It remains to be seen whether that content – or at the very least, the Dream Team – will be available in NBA 2K18. It also remains to be seen whether 2K will take Charles Barkley up on his offer, in order to get him into the classic and all-time teams. If nothing else, it’s great to see new content being added that isn’t a pre-order exclusive, or paid DLC.

In other news, 2K has been posting a bunch of player screenshots, revealing their overall ratings and several new uniforms in the process. You can check out the latest batch of screens below, as well as in our NBA 2K18 gallery.

Which teams are you hoping to see in NBA 2K18? Which players do you expect will make up the all-time roster for your favourite team? Any thoughts on the latest screenshots and player ratings? Have your say in the comments section below, and feel free to join in the discussion taking place in our NBA 2K18 Forum.

Monday Tip-Off: The Future of Historical Teams in NBA 2K

Michael Jordan dribbles the basketball in NBA 2K17

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games. This week, I’m tipping things off with a few thoughts on the future of historical teams in NBA 2K.

Beginning with the content added for the Jordan Challenge in NBA 2K11, Visual Concepts’ roster of historical teams in NBA 2K has delivered an experience that we once never thought possible. While the game hasn’t featured a dedicated mode for historical teams since NBA’s Greatest in NBA 2K12, many retro squads are still available as of NBA 2K17. It’s clear that there’s a demand for them, as new teams and players have been added over the years. Community projects such as the Ultimate Base Roster, U R Basketball, and the Ultimate Classic Teams Roster, further demonstrate how we like to use basketball video games to look back on the past.

Looking ahead to future NBA 2K games, however, I have to wonder what’s in store for historical teams. A few prominent players have been removed since NBA 2K11, and others weren’t included in the first place when their teams were added. Some teams have been cut in their entirety, either due to redundancy, or a lack of real players as licensing deals have expired. It’s been a couple of years since any new historical teams were added – the pre-order bonus Dream Team in NBA 2K17 not withstanding – and even longer since they’ve been utilised in a dedicated mode. I have to wonder, what does the future look like for historical teams in NBA 2K?
