NLSC Podcast – Episode #230

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #230 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Without any technical issues to keep us off the air, we’re back to talk about the latest updates for NBA Live 18 and NBA 2K18, share our latest impressions of both games, and catch up on the past couple of weeks in basketball gaming news.

On this week’s show…

  • Patch 1.08 has added comprehensive roster editing to NBA Live 18. We’re certainly surprised, and impressed at how the game has continued to improve since launch.
  • NBA 2K18’s Patch 1.06 has addressed some bugs, but also caused a few more problems. To be honest, we’re still feeling disappointed with this year’s release from Visual Concepts.
  • The qualifying round for the NBA 2K League will be taking place in January. We share our thoughts on what the League might be like, given our experiences with 2K Pro-Am.
  • Several t-shirts have been removed from the kiosk in The Neighborhood, mostly due to trademark and copyright concerns. This has led to some issues with lost VC.
  • A teenager has spent over $17,000 AUS on microtransactions across various games, leading us to once again reflect on their intrusive nature in AAA titles.
  • Our Week in Basketball Gaming has seen our frustration with 2K Pro-Am reach its boiling point, an enjoyable victory in The Playground, and possible plans to change up our habits on the virtual hardwood.
  • We wrap up Episode #230 of the NLSC Podcast with some NBA discussion, including recent streaks, and the Jahlil Okafor trade.

The Friday Five: 5 Most Useless Features in Basketball Games

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. This week’s Five is a list of some of the most useless features and functions that we’ve seen in basketball games.

We’ve come to expect a significant amount of depth in basketball video games, not only in terms of the modes and gameplay, but also features and functionality. Be they big or small, glamorous or mundane, frequently used or just handy to have when we need them, there are numerous features and functions that go a long way in providing a well-rounded basketball gaming experience. And then, there are the features that aren’t so useful. Of course, usefulness can be subjective. If you enjoy outfitting your player in different clothing, for example, you’ll find that feature a lot more useful than someone who has no interest in that aspect of the career modes.

Taking a look at features of questionable usefulness, some are good ideas that just haven’t been executed well, while others are pointless at best. Certain features have seen their usefulness decline over time, either due to neglect or redundancy. Whatever the case may be, sometimes you’ll see a feature or function in a basketball video game, and wonder why the developers spent any time implementing it. Other times, you may wish that they spent a little more time on a feature, in order to make it more worthwhile. Without any further ado, here are five features that we’ve seen in basketball games – past and present – that I would rank among the most useless.

NBA Live 18 Patch 1.08 Released; Roster Editing, New Shoes

New Roster Management in NBA Live 18

Patch 1.08 is now available for NBA Live 18, and it’s an update that a lot of basketball gamers have been waiting for. Not only does the latest title update include a variety of new shoes, it also adds full roster editing to the game! Roster editing functionality has been absent since the series was rebooted in 2013 with NBA Live 14, and as such, it’s become a fixture on our Wishlists. It’s great to finally see it return, and in a post-release update, no less.

The new roster editing functionality includes the ability to change heights, weights, years pro, numbers, ratings, gear, traits, and playstyles; basically, all player bio data. Players can also be traded or assigned to other teams, as well as cut and signed from the Free Agent Pool. There are also 135 slots for created players, which is a pleasant surprise. Once you customise the roster, you’re able to take it into Franchise mode, just as in years past.

As always, the latest patch will come through automatically as long as your PlayStation 4 or Xbox One is connected to the Internet. If you encounter any issues, try restarting your console.

This is obviously excellent news, and as we’ve mentioned on the NLSC Podcast, something we didn’t expect to see happen until NBA Live 19. We’ll have more reactions in Episode #230, but in the meantime, feel free to add your thoughts in the comments section below, as well as here in the NBA Live 18 section of the NLSC Forum. If any additional patch notes are released, we’ll be sure to follow up and post them. You can also find an update history for NBA Live 18 here in our Wiki.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #229

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #229 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane and I as we discuss the latest updates for NBA Live 18 and NBA 2K18, recap an eventful week of basketball gaming, and catch up on some NBA news.

On this week’s show…

  • Patch 1.07 provided a significant content update for NBA Live 18, including new rosters and 3v3 play in Live Run. The gameplay itself also continues to improve.
  • A handful of new players have been added to the All-Time teams and historical squads in NBA 2K18. Unfortunately, some of the biggest names are still absent.
  • Our Week in Basketball Gaming was full and eventful! Although we had some rough sessions of 2K Pro-Am, we did pick up a few victories (including some in The Playground), continued our respective MyCAREERs, and had fun with NBA Live 18 online and offline. We also discuss shooting mechanics in NBA 2K18.
  • We wrap up Episode #229 of the NLSC Podcast with some NBA talk, including the Celtics’ winning streak coming to an end, the Thunder/Warriors clash, and Derrick Rose’s future.

12 Players Added to Historical Teams in NBA 2K18

NBA 2K18: Al Harrington

As originally noted by Forbes, twelve new players have quietly been added to some of the historical squads and All-Time teams in NBA 2K18. The new players and the teams they appear on are as follows:

  • Gerald Wallace (All-Time Charlotte Hornets and 01-02 Sacramento Kings
  • Carlos Boozer (All-Time Utah Jazz and 10-11 Chicago Bulls)
  • Danny Granger (All-Time Indiana Pacers)
  • Clark Kellogg (All-Time Indiana Pacers)
  • Caron Butler (All-Time Washington Wizards and 10-11 Dallas Mavericks)
  • Al Harrington (06-07 Golden State Warriors)
  • Stacey King (90-91 and 92-93 Chicago Bulls)
  • Corliss Williamson (03-04 Detroit Pistons)
  • James Posey (05-06 Miami Heat)
  • Damon Jones (06-07 Cleveland Cavaliers)
  • Jared Jeffries (11-12 New York Knicks)
  • Daequan Cook (12-13 Oklahoma City Thunder)

When the All-Time teams and new historical squads were announced, there was talk that a few notable absentees might be added in future updates. That has obviously come to pass, but as the Forbes article notes, unfortunately 2K have not been able to secure the likeness rights of Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller, Moses Malone, and Rasheed Wallace, four of the most noteworthy players still missing from the game. It remains to be seen whether 2K will be able to come to an agreement with any of those players in the future.

In the meantime, what are your thoughts? Have you been playing any games with the historical squads and All-Time teams? Have your say in the comments section below, as well as in this topic in the NBA 2K18 section of the NLSC Forum.

NBA Live 18 Patch 1.07 Released; 3v3, Updated Rosters

Eric Bledsoe on the Milwaukee Bucks (NBA Live 18)

A new patch (1.07) has come through for NBA Live 18. It will be downloaded automatically as long as your PlayStation 4 or Xbox One is connected to the Internet; if it’s not showing up, try restarting your console.

Patch 1.07 is a substantial content update, as it not only provides an overdue roster update, but also adds a 3v3 option to Live Run. 3v3 had previously been teased by the official social media accounts, and was more or less officially confirmed yesterday.

The latest rosters are accurate as of November 15th. While this date is obviously a week behind, no significant transactions have occurred since then, so the rosters should be more or less accurate. A handful of incorrect jersey numbers have also been corrected.

Other key issues addressed by Patch 1.07 include problems with Carmelo Anthony’s jumpshot not unlocking, Reward Crates forcing players to exit online lobbies, and disconnections while navigating The One Store. The patch notes, which you can check out below in their entirety, also mention the usual “general stability fixes and improvements”.

As always, feel free to discuss the latest patch in the comments section below, as well as in this topic in the NBA Live 18 section of our Forum. You can also find a full update history for NBA Live 18 here in our Wiki.
