1996 Season Mod for NBA Live 2004 v3.1 Released

1996 Season Mod for NBA Live 2004: Michael Jordan

For my first contribution to March Modness 2022, I’ve released a new version (v3.1) of my 1996 Season Mod for NBA Live 2004 PC! It’s an overdue update as the last release came in 2018 – also to tip off March Modness that year – and there have been some changes I’ve been meaning to make.

Most notably, since several people have suggested it, I’ve removed the setup file in favour of a manual installation. Installing the mod is now just a matter of extracting the included folders to the appropriate places. The installation routine was originally intended to do this automatically, but it seemed to place files in the wrong folders more often than not. Please see the readme file for detailed instructions!

I’ve also included a pre-modified xstartup.cfg file, just in case you have trouble enabling CustomArt; a necessary step to use the mod, and any other NBA Live 2004 projects that utilise custom art files. If you’ve already enabled CustomArt or are confident in editing the config file yourself, you can skip this step.

Download the 1996 Season Mod for NBA Live 2004 PC here, and check out the release/support topic here in the Forum! This probably won’t be the last time that I touch this project, as I’m sure I can find a few other enhancements to implement beyond making the installation process easier. Thank you to everyone who has still expressed interest in this mod all these years later!

March Modness 2022 Tips Off Today

NLSC March Modness

It’s that time of the year again, so we’re tipping off our fifth annual March Modness! The event is a celebration of modding, and the modding community that we’ve built and maintained over the past 25 years. Naturally we support modding all year round, but we’ve nominated March as a time to get extra creative and productive!

As always, March Modness includes a giveaway. All you need to do is upload a new mod to the Downloads section with “March Modness” in the description, and you’ll go into the draw to win a copy of NBA 2K23 PC. The mod can be for any basketball game that can be modded, including retro titles. Full terms and conditions can be found below. Congratulations once again to Pep, the winner of last year’s giveaway!

Additionally, I’m taking this opportunity to announce a change to the way I post bulletins about recent uploads. For years now, I’ve been using the term “File Additions” for those bulletins, as it’s what our founders used when they first began maintaining a Downloads database back in the mid 90s. It’s something I’ve kept out of tradition, but in order to move with the times and remove any ambiguity, those posts are now going to be titled “Mod Releases”.

I’m looking forward to this being an exciting and productive March Modness. As always, I’ll be looking to get in on the fun myself with a few releases. The modding bug does bite from time to time, and this is obviously the month to indulge it. Stay tuned for those releases, and all of the great work that I’m sure is coming this month!

The Friday Five: 5 Mistakes Old Games Made in Season Modes

The Friday Five: 5 Mistakes Old Games Made in Season Modes

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five mistakes that were very common in the Season modes of older basketball titles.

Disclaimer: just because basketball video games have come a long way, it doesn’t mean that we can’t criticise modern releases. It’s fair to respectfully point out issues and ways that they could improve, and to expect value for money as a consumer. With that being said, if it’s been a while since you dusted off a really old game, it’s easy to overlook just how far they’ve come. Broadly speaking, one of the most significant improvements to the genre has been establishing a standard approach to core modes such as Season, Franchise, Career, Card Collecting, and so on.

I know phrases such as “in their infancy” and “it was the Wild West!” are somewhat cliché, but frankly, when basketball games were in their infancy, it was the Wild West when it came to how they designed certain features! EA Sports and Tecmo pioneered many of the design principles for modes based on the NBA season that have since become the standard approach. As such, if you revisit an old NBA Live or one of the NBA Playoffs games, or Tecmo Super NBA Basketball, you’ll find Season modes that clearly laid the foundation for modern titles. They had some drawbacks of course, and other games were also employing some rather unusual ideas in their Season modes.

Wayback Wednesday: The Broken Rotation Screen in NBA Live

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at the broken rotation screen that appeared in various NBA Live releases.

During my extended NBA Live 10 retro kick, I wondered why I didn’t spend more time with it when it was new. I’ve wondered the same about some of its immediate predecessors, a couple of which were fairly solid in their own right. Issues with lobs and broken plays soon reminded me why. The fact of the matter is that NBA Live 10 does have some quirky moments that were annoying when it was the newest game I owned, but are more tolerable now that the game is nostalgic. My involvement in NBA Live modding also kept me focused on the PC releases.

However, reflecting on it further, I’ve also realised that the quality of Dynasty mode played a large role here. In many ways, I feel that Dynasty peaked with the prior gen version of NBA Live 06, which also included the PC port. It’s not that there weren’t any improvements in the following games, but there were also inaccuracies with the sim engine, and other such annoyances. Oh, and the broken rotation screen, which affected basic functionality, and stood in the way of one of the main joys of roster management: creating different lineups. Let’s take a look back…way back…

Catching up on the latest results from our NBA Jam: On Fire Edition Tournament, we reflect on a truly epic comeback! This week’s main topic is the variety of NBA video games that we used to enjoy. We open up the mailbag to see which NBA video games the community most wants to see return instead of (or in the best case scenario, in addition to) NBA Live, and discuss our memories of those titles.

NBA 2K10 Official PC Rosters Added To Archives

NBA 2K10 Cover Art

Too many files go missing over the years, be they unofficial mods or official updates. It’s our goal to preserve files whenever we can, and to that end, we invite everyone to make use of our upload facilities to add any files from your archives. In that spirit, I’ve uploaded the official rosters for the PC version of NBA 2K10.

You can find the official rosters for NBA 2K10 PC here. In addition to the final update from May 7th 2010, you can find older updates under the dropdown menu above the Download button. I believe that all of the updates are accounted for, dating back to the first two in October 2009. Simply place them in your NBA 2K10 saves folder, and load them as necessary.

Unfortunately, while we’ve been able to preserve official updates for the PC versions of NBA 2K10, NBA 2K11, NBA 2K12, NBA 2K13, and NBA 2K14, we don’t have any updates for the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 versions of those games. If anybody still has those files to share, we’d certainly welcome them being added to our Downloads database!

Once again, we’d also like to preserve community-made mods whenever possible. If you happen to have any stored in your backups, please feel free to upload them as well. Just make sure that they’re credited to the original author. As always, if you have your own work to share, by all means utilise our upload facilities! Whether a mod is for the latest game or an old favourite, it has a place here.

The Friday Five: 5 Annoying File Management Issues

The Friday Five: 5 Annoying File Management Issues

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. This week’s Five is a list of five annoying file management issues encountered in various basketball games.

Saving our progress in basketball video games is something that we take for granted. Even going back to some of the oldest titles, the ability to save games and rosters was a common feature. After all, it’s impossible to finish a lengthy season in one session. Editing the rosters each and every time you boot up the game is a chore, though there are a couple of old games that required you to do just that. As technology improved and storage space increased, basketball games evolved beyond having just a couple of save slots, and a lone custom roster file.

As such, for several years and console generations now, we’ve had file management functionality that is pleasingly accommodating. There will be times when certain needs aren’t met, but generally speaking, it’s easy to preserve saved games and custom rosters, and manage them accordingly. Of course, technological improvements mean little in the face of poor design choices or subpar coding. Some games do err when it comes to their file management functionality, or are simply undesirably limited. From inefficient utilisation of storage space to technical issues, these are some of the more annoying problems that we encounter in basketball game file management systems.

Wayback Wednesday: The Oddball Classic Teams

Wayback Wednesday: The Oddball Classic Teams

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m taking a look back at the oddball classic teams that have been featured in NBA 2K.

One of the best things about the classic teams in NBA 2K is that over the years, the developers have sought to include more unorthodox choices. As fantastic as The Jordan Challenge and NBA’s Greatest were, limiting the selection of classic teams to MJ’s squads and their opponents, or teams connected to fifteen of the league’s all-time best players, didn’t demonstrate much imagination. I love that we have teams such as the 2000 Trail Blazers and Raptors, and the 1997 Heat. NBA 2K needn’t only include truly legendary teams, as there are other interesting squads that are fun to play with.

With that being said, there have been some oddball choices when it comes to the classic teams found in various NBA 2K games. That doesn’t necessarily mean they were bad choices that shouldn’t have been included, though in some cases there was arguably a better option. They do stand out as puzzling picks or ill-fitting inclusions, if for no other reason than they lack a suitable opponent. These oddball choices are something that’s been on my mind when playing with classic teams recently, so let’s take a look back…way back…
