We’re going retro with a couple of new file additions for NBA Live 96. The first file is actually a new release, updating the SEGA Genesis version of the game as of the current season. The second upload is a mod that I found in the archives, and adds 1997 NCAA rosters to the PC version. If you’re in the mood for some retro gaming, check them out at the links below!

Latest NBA Live 18 Roster Includes Melo Trade, Wade Signing

NBA Live 18: Carmelo Anthony on the Oklahoma City Thunder

A new roster has been pushed through for NBA Live 18, and will be downloaded automatically as long as your PlayStation 4 or Xbox One is connected to the Internet when you fire up the game. As you would expect of a roster update, it features recent transactions, all the way up to September 27th.

The two most noteworthy transactions reflected in the latest roster are the trade that sent Carmelo Anthony to the Oklahoma City Thunder, and Dwyane Wade signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Other transactions include Andrew Bogut signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Chicago Bulls’ acquisition of Quincy Pondexter, and Tyler Zeller joining the Brooklyn Nets.

Browsing the Rosters menu in NBA Live 18, it does seem that a few transactions from the past month unfortunately remain unaccounted for. Notable examples including Aaron Brooks signing with the Minnesota Timberwolves. and Tony Allen joining the New Orleans Pelicans. A handful of other players are missing here and there, so the rosters aren’t quite complete yet.

These omissions highlight the need for user roster customisation, which we were hoping to see return in NBA Live 18. To that end, a few people have been asking whether roster editing functionality will be added to the game via an official patch. As we’ve discussed in the NLSC Podcast, it’s something that we’d love to see, but there’s been no word of any plans to that effect. As such, my advice would be to not expect it to happen. If we hear anything to the contrary, we’ll be sure to let everyone know.

We’re currently compiling feedback on the NBA Live 18 rosters to send along to the development team at EA Tiburon, so if you’d like to help out in creating a list of missing players, incorrect jersey numbers, and so on, be sure to check out this thread in the NLSC Forum. You can also check out some screenshots of various players in their new uniforms below.

NBA Live 18 Patch 1.03 Out Now; More Content

James Harden wearing the Rockets' Statement Jersey in NBA Live 18

Patch 1.03 has come through for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of NBA Live 18. A new in-game update is also available, adding new content and Live Event challenges. All of the latest updates should download automatically as long as your PS4 or X1 is connected to the Internet. If you encounter any problems, try restarting your console.

The most significant additions in these updates are probably the new Nike Statement jerseys (formerly known as alternate or secondary uniforms) for all 30 NBA teams. At launch, NBA Live 18 only featured the Association and Icon jerseys, formerly designated as the home and away uniforms respectively. Notably, a few home/away uniform assignments are actually incorrect in NBA Live 18, as not every team has chosen to wear their white Association jerseys for home games this season.

A new Celebrations Crate has also been added to The One. As the name suggests, it includes a selection of ten celebration animations for your player. The Crate will cost 12,500 Reward Points, which are earned through playing The One, LIVE Run, and the Pro-Am Tour. New Live Events have been added, including “Fear the Beard” and “What If: Melo Traded”. Finally, new rosters have also been pushed through, however a lot of recent signings are still unaccounted for at this time. We’ll be looking to compile some roster feedback in the Forum, to send along to the development team.

As always, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below. I’ve also set up a discussion and information topic for the NBA Live 18 title updates here in our Forum, as well as an update history resource here in our Wiki. If you’d like to check out some screenshots of a few of the new Statement jerseys in NBA Live 18, see below.

Wayback Wednesday: NBA Live 96 Complete Update

Kobe Bryant in the Complete Update Patch for NBA Live 96

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m taking a look back at the Complete Update mod I made for NBA Live 96 PC.

Maybe it’s because it’s been a while since I’ve worked on a major roster project, or perhaps it’s talking about old mods in recent editions of Wayback Wednesday, but recently I’ve been feeling somewhat nostalgic about the days when I was more active in the modding community. I’ve talked about my 1996 season mod for NBA Live 2004 (which will be receiving further updates, thanks to Murat) and the NBA Live PC project for NBA Live 06 (which I’d love to update if I had the time), but this time I’m going back even further, to the Complete Update that I made for NBA Live 96.

Even though it’s obviously been far surpassed by the numerous games that have followed it, the PC version of NBA Live 96 remains one of my all-time favourite basketball games. Indeed, it was for that very reason that I was still making updates for it as late as 2001, even though it was already becoming something of a relic. Let’s take a look back…way back…

NBA Live 18 Demo Roster Updated; Rockets & Celtics Added

NBA Live 18 Demo: James Harden

EA Sports continues to push through updates for the NBA Live 18 demo. The latest patch adds the Houston Rockets and Boston Celtics for use in Play Now, bringing the total number of NBA teams in the demo to four. The rosters have also been updated, with Isaiah Thomas now on the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Kyrie Irving on the Celtics. The update should come through automatically as long as your PlayStation 4 or Xbox One is connected to the Internet. If you encounter any issues, try restarting your console.

The latest update also includes new faces for certain players. Notably, Derrick Rose has a new hairstyle, as he now sports short braids. Check out a screenshot of Rose with his new hairstyle below, along with a few screens of Irving and Thomas in their new jerseys, and a handful of other players. For more NBA Live 18 pre-release screenshots, be sure to check out our gallery.

There are no additional patch notes at this time, but if any are released, we’ll be sure to post them. EA has been tinkering with the gameplay in the NBA Live 18 demo based on the feedback they’ve received so far, so the “minor bug fixes” listed in the update history on PlayStation 4 probably do include a few more tweaks. As always, feel free to share your impressions in the comments section below, as well as in this topic in our NBA Live 18 Forum.

Wayback Wednesday: Legends & Champs Rosters for NBA Live

Isiah Thomas in the Legends Roster for NBA Live 2000

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m taking a look back at the Legends and Champs rosters for NBA Live on PC.

The announcement that NBA 2K18 will be receiving new historical content, not only in the form of additional classic teams but also All-Time squads, drew a lot of excitement from gamers who are also enthusiastic NBA history buffs. While there have been omissions and other issues, historical content is something that the 2K series has generally done a great job with since NBA 2K11. Of course, as more than a couple of people have pointed out here and on social media, All-Time Teams are not a completely original concept, as many fan-made rosters featuring such squads have been created in recent years.

However, the concept goes back a lot further than that. Rosters comprised of All-Time squads date all the way back to the early days of patching NBA Live on PC, as Lutz’s Legends rosters demonstrate. For that matter, the concept of classic teams was also utilised by his Champs rosters. It’s been a while and a lot of newer basketball gamers probably aren’t aware of those influential mods, so let’s take a look back…way back…

Full All-Time Team Rosters Revealed for NBA 2K18

NBA 2K18: All-Time Los Angeles Lakers

In the wake of the All-Time Teams trailer, the full rosters for all of the new All-Time Squads in NBA 2K18 have been revealed. 2K posted the roster listings over on the game’s official Facebook page, indicating the starters and revealing all of the players’ overall ratings.

As many gamers and a few publications covering NBA 2K18 have noted, there are some glaring omissions. Charles Barkley and Reggie Miller are two of the most noticeable absentees, as it would seem that 2K Sports were still unable to secure their likeness rights. The 1992 Dream Team is reportedly in the game again this year, so presumably Barkley will at least be included on that squad. Other noteworthy absentees include Moses Malone, Rasheed Wallace, Brandon Roy, and Gilbert Arenas. Of course, the new content still gives our modding community a tremendous head start this year.

See below for the full roster listings, and don’t forget to check out the trailer if you haven’t already seen it. What are your thoughts on the All-Time Teams? Have your say in the comments section below, and feel free to join in the discussion here in the NBA 2K18 section of the NLSC Forum.

The Friday Five: 5 More Basketball Game Features Ahead of Their Time

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. This week’s Five takes a look at five basketball game features that were ahead of their time.

I guess I’m in the mood for sequels at the moment. After following up an older Friday Five with another list of random basketball game facts a couple of weeks ago, I’ve got another Part 2 column for you today. Back in October of last year, I talked about five basketball game features that were ahead of their time. Since the list is obviously much longer than just those five, and we’re in the midst of learning about the new additions and innovations in this year’s games, I thought I’d take the opportunity to discuss five more basketball game features that were ahead of their time when they made their debut.

Like I said in my previous column, it can be surprising to see how long ago it was that certain features made their basketball game debut. Conversely, it’s also somewhat disheartening when you remember that some of them can’t be found in more recent titles. On a more positive note, some features and gameplay mechanics have definitely been enhanced since they were first implemented, or paved the way for similar and ultimately superior concepts. With that in mind, here are five basketball game features that demonstrated great foresight and technological achievement.
