NBL 2K20 Mod Released for NBA 2K20 PC

NBL 2K20 Mod Released

You may recall that back in August, MonkeyManJSV and his team released a demo of the NBL 2K20 mod. The project has since been completed, and is now available to download for NBA 2K20 PC! Please note that it cannot be used with the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions of the game.

For the uninitiated, the mod is a total conversion that adds complete rosters for Australia’s National Basketball League to NBA 2K20. It features comprehensive art updates including player faces, jerseys, logos, and courts. As such, it’s highly recommended that you back up your files before installing the mod, so that you can easily restore the original artwork if desired.

The roster can be found on 2K Share under the name NBL2K20 by MonkeyManJSV. A pack containing all of the required art files can be found here in the mod’s release topic. For detailed installation instructions, be sure to check out this video. Congratulations to MonkeyManJSV and the entire NBL 2K20 mod team on the release! It’s great to see the NBL represented on the virtual hardwood, and another comprehensive modding project come together.

Ultimate Classic Teams Roster V3 Released for NBA 2K17

Ultimate Classic Teams Roster V3

In case you were unaware, NLSC Team Member Dee4Three has recently released V3 of the Ultimate Classic Teams Roster for NBA 2K17 PC. The mod adds 50 new classic teams to the game, while also completing the rosters of the existing historical squads. Please note that the mod is only compatible with the PC version of NBA 2K17.

Dee4Three has gone to painstaking detail to create an authentic retro experience with this project. That includes everything from accurate player tendencies and ratings, to year-specific artwork. The roster includes some unique choices for teams that aim for fun on the virtual hardwood. New squads include an array of champions, contenders, and short-lived teams that never quite lived up to their potential. Decades of NBA history are covered in the roster, beginning with the 1963 Boston Celtics and ending with the 2018 Oklahoma City Thunder.

You can pick up V3 of the Ultimate Classic Teams Roster here in our Downloads database! For additional previews, support, or just to say thanks, check out the release topic here. Congratulations to Dee4Three on the release, and a big thanks to everyone who helped out by contributing art updates to the project! Full credits can be found in the release topic.

Wayback Wednesday: Former NBA Teams & Video Games

Wayback Wednesday: Former NBA Teams & Video Games

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m taking a look back at former NBA teams, and their now-nostalgic appearances in video games.

Something that I’ve explored in several of my Wayback Wednesday features this year is the way that old video games act as interactive almanacs. Yes, it’s fun to revisit old hoops titles simply to remember what the gameplay was like. Certain games hold up quite well, and for some gamers, their simplicity can even make them more appealing than the newer releases. However, as I’ve said on many occasions, there’s something really enjoyable about looking back at a snapshot of the NBA by scrolling through the rosters and seeing now-retired players, as well as familiar faces in strange places.

To that point, I’ve mostly been focusing on the players, but there’s a lot of nostalgia with the teams as well. Not only is it a fun trip down memory lane to see lineups that we’ve forgotten – some of them full of “What Ifs” – but it’s great to see all of the old branding as well. From logos that teams used for years, to short-lived uniforms and the classic jerseys that still rank as our favourites, we can see it all when we dust off old games. With a handful of franchises relocating and/or changing their names over the past couple of decades, we can also see those former NBA teams live on through the virtual hardwood. Let’s take a look back…way back…

The Friday Five: Top 5 Unfixed Bugs in NBA 2K21 Current Gen

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. This week’s Five is a countdown of the Top 5 unfixed bugs in the Current Gen version of NBA 2K21.

Whenever a new console generation launches, you can guarantee that the version of the game that the existing platforms receive is going to be an afterthought. It only stands to reason that Next Gen is the focus, given the new technology that developers have to work with, and the desire for strong sales numbers that the suits desire. In the best case scenario, the Current Gen version will still be a solid release for gamers that aren’t ready – or this time around, able – to upgrade to the new consoles. It’s certainly not uncommon, however, for the Current Gen release to be a sloppy or subpar one.

That’s exactly how I would describe NBA 2K21 Current Gen. I’m tempted to call it a copy and paste job, except that it lacks the quality of NBA 2K20. Not only does the game feature a myriad of legacy issues that have persisted throughout the generation – or even longer in some cases – but there are new bugs and gameplay problems, too. Furthermore, the post-release support has likewise been disappointing. Although the game has received a number of patches, there are still some major bugs that remain unfixed as of the last update. Please note that I’m only referring to technical issues and not gameplay problems here, as that’s a whole other topic for another time.

NLSC Podcast #349: The Quest for a Next Gen Console

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #349 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this week’s show.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are out, and so is NBA 2K21 Next Gen! Unfortunately neither of us are able to play the game yet, but one of us has had some luck in our quest for a Next Gen console. In the meantime, we discuss the gameplay videos we’ve seen, impressions from the community, and an aspect of the new MyNBA mode that isn’t quite what we were expecting. Circling back to last week’s show, we answer a question about there still being room for improvement on this generation. We’re also intrigued by EA Sports expanding their portfolio, and what it might mean for college basketball games. In this week’s mailbag, we discuss the style of play in the NBA 2K League and its impact on online play, as well as the issue of various historical players being underutilised outside of MyTEAM.

What’s your take on this week’s conversation? Sound off in the comments section below, or join in the discussion here in the Forum! Additionally, feel free to hit us up with any feedback on the episode, as well as mailbag questions and topic suggestions for future episodes. Wayback Wednesday: NBA Live 09 & Fallout 3

Wayback Wednesday: NBA Live 09 & Fallout 3

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m looking back at how NBA Live 09 led me to discover Fallout 3, and the way that the games are linked in my nostalgia for them.

I’m sure that some of you are thinking this is quite an unusual topic for a Wayback Wednesday feature. Of course, if you’re a long-time listener of the NLSC Podcast or a member of our Forum, you may well be aware that I’m also an enthusiastic fan of the Fallout series. Along with Bart vs. The Space Mutants, mentioning it on the podcast is something of a running gag. At the same time, my love of Fallout 3 in particular has a connection to basketball gaming. More specifically, when I reflect on Fallout 3, I’ll often associate it with NBA Live 09.

That may seem quite esoteric, but there’s a reason why the two games are linked for me. No, NBA Live 09 doesn’t exactly have any post-apocalyptic themes, and apart from basketballs being present as a junk/miscellaneous item in Fallout 3, it doesn’t have much to do with the hardwood, virtual or otherwise. Nevertheless, the two games are linked in my memory, and today I’m reflecting upon that connection. Let’s take a look back…way back…

NLSC Podcast #345: There’s Skating Afoot

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #345 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this week’s show.

With the release of the second gameplay blog for NBA 2K21 Next Gen, we’ve got some more details to sink our teeth into. As with the first blog, a lot of the improvements sound good on paper, but we’re sceptical. The accompanying videos also seem to be painting a different picture. This leads us to bring up some quotes from developer blogs for NBA 2K18, NBA 2K19, and NBA 2K20, and note some very similar phrasing. To that point, we discuss how and why developer blogs are often taken at face value. We also talk about the lure of going back to mod old favourites, and the factors that encourage us to tinker with previous games rather than the current one.

What’s your take on this week’s conversation? Sound off in the comments section below, or join in the discussion here in the Forum! Additionally, feel free to hit us up with any feedback on the episode, as well as suggestions for topics that you’d like to hear us discuss in future episodes.
