NLSC Podcast – Episode #272

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #272 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Both Arcane and Kenny are unavailable to co-host this week, so I’ve given a solo show another try. As a result, it’s a shorter episode, but I still manage to catch up on some recent news, offer up some opinions, and share what I’ve been doing on the virtual hardwood.

On this week’s show…

  • A content update has come through for NBA Live 19, featuring current rosters and new items in The One Store. Although the updates are welcome, there is growing unrest within the community, who generally want to see more focus on NBA content.
  • Our modding community continues to pump out some excellent work. It’s difficult not to get inspired to contribute, and to that end, a few projects are still in the works.
  • Cleanprincegaming posted an excellent retrospective on the rise and fall of the NBA Street series. It highlights an unfortunate shift in EA Sports’ business model, and a lack of creativity in the current market.
  • Has 2K ruined Team Pro-Am? Despite the launch of the NBA 2K League, the changes to Pro-Am in recent games seem counterproductive to generating interest in it, or the mode in general.
  • Episode #272 of the NLSC Podcast wraps up with some recent stories from the virtual hardwood, including a frustrating bug in the NBA Finals in NBA 2K19’s MyCAREER.

The Friday Five: 5 Ideas NBA Live Should Borrow from NBA 2K

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. This week’s Five discusses five ideas that NBA Live should borrow from NBA 2K.

Since we’re in the process of compiling feedback for our NBA Live 20 Wishlist, I feel like discussing some of the improvements that I believe would take the game to the next level. In particular, I’d like to discuss some ideas and concepts from NBA 2K which NBA Live should be looking to borrow. After all, when it comes to good ideas and features that an NBA video game should have, it doesn’t matter who did it first. The important thing is that games find a way of implementing those ideas and making them work. It never hurts to look at what the brand leader is doing, either.

Glancing at Twitter as of late – a foolhardy thing to do, some might say – I have seen some divided opinions when it comes to the matter of NBA Live’s approach, identity, and the notion of borrowing ideas from NBA 2K. A lot of younger and admittedly passionate fans are downplaying the concerns and suggestions of “old heads”, their point being that it’s a new day and we’re hung up on the past. Respectfully, I must disagree. While it is easy to get caught up in nostalgia, we long-time virtual hoops enthusiasts do know a thing or two, including what the game was like it in its heyday. To that end, NBA Live would benefit from borrowing these NBA 2K concepts.

NBA Live 19 January 17th Content Update; Latest Rosters

Donovan Mitchell Updated in NBA Live 19

EA Sports has provided a detailed breakdown of the January 17th content update for NBA Live 19. For those who are unaware of the difference, unlike official patches, content updates are pushed through in-game and downloaded after you advance past the title screen, assuming of course that you have an active Internet connection. At a glance, here’s what’s included in the latest content update for NBA Live 19:

  • Bug fixes – Fixes various Live Event data issues with certain player likenesses not appearing properly.
  • Updated/added Live Events Data
  • Updated transactions
  • Updated lineups
  • Updated player gear

Specifically, the starting lineups for the Hawks, Hornets, Warriors, Clippers, Timberwolves, Thunder, Wizards, and Mavericks have been updated. Players with updated gear include Bradley Beal, Trae Young, Gordon Hayward, Blake Griffin, James Harden, Marc Gasol, Russell Westbrook, Aaron Gordon, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell, Jaren Jackson Jr, Eric Bledsoe, Donte DiVincenzo, and Thon Maker. The latest injuries have also been accounted for, and Patrick McCaw’s jersey number has been fixed.

While the developers are obviously still taking suggestions and corrections for the rosters in NBA Live 19, don’t forget that we’re collecting feedback to send along for NBA Live 20. Check out our Work-in-Progress Wishlist here in the NLSC Forum!

Wayback Wednesday: Ultimate Base Roster Retrospective

Rosters included in the Ultimate Base Roster for NBA 2K14

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m taking a look back at the history of the Ultimate Base Roster, through an interview with HAWK23 himself.

The Ultimate Base Roster, also known as UBR, began as a roster update for NBA 2K12 that also expanded upon the game’s historical content. Over time, it grew into a comprehensive modding project that not only kept NBA 2K12 up to date, but allowed basketball gamers to step back into the past with multiple complete season mods and other fun content. The project would later be adapted for NBA 2K14, a release that has received an update just today. Gamers have been enjoying UBR for years now, and it’s even encouraged long-time console users to pick up the PC versions.

Want to know more about the history of the mod, and what it’s been like to maintain it for all these years? Check out my interview with UBR creator HAWK23, as we take a look back…way back…

RED MC & REDitor II Updated; All Functionality Now Free!

RED MC v5.0.0.0 Preview

I’m a few days late in posting this, but Vlad delivered the NBA 2K modding community some fantastic news for Christmas. For the first time in quite a while, new versions of RED MC and REDitor II have been released. The new versions contain a couple of minor bug fixes, but the biggest development is that all functionality is now available for free!

We still have quite a few people modding and playing the older NBA 2K games on PC, and these new releases will undoubtedly be a boost for that contingent of our community. For those who are unaware, the tools are comprehensive roster editors and modding utilities, used in the creation of projects such as the Ultimate Base Roster and U R Basketball. REDitor II is compatible with NBA 2K10, NBA 2K11, and NBA 2K12, while RED MC is used with NBA 2K13 and NBA 2K14.

Pick them up in these sections of our Downloads database:

A huge thanks to Vlad for his hard work over the years, and for now making these tools freely available for everyone. For modding tutorials and resources, please check out the appropriate sections in the NLSC Forum.

NBA 2K17 Online Support Ending December 31st

Cover Player Paul George in NBA 2K17

As you may or may not already know, online support for NBA 2K17 is ending on December 31st, 2018. Once the servers are shut down, we’ll no longer have access to shared rosters and Draft Classes, MyLEAGUE Online, MyTEAM, Play Now Online, or any other online components. Virtual Currency purchases will also be unavailable, though MyCAREER will still be playable using an offline currency and more limited functionality.

Given that the NBA 2K17 server shutdown will be taking place within a week or so, it would be a wise idea to download any and all community content as soon as possible. To that end, if you have any recommendations for rosters, Draft Classes, or other shared content for NBA 2K17, feel free to post them in the comments section below, or in this topic in the NLSC Forum.

Following the controversy when the NBA 2K14 servers were shut down, 2K Sports extended support for all of their titles to 27 months. This has ensured that every NBA 2K game will receive online support for two full seasons, plus an additional three months. Barring a further change in policy, online support for NBA 2K18 will cease on December 31st, 2019.
