Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five predictions that were made while simulating through twenty seasons in NBA 2K19 MyCAREER.

From their earliest appearances, multi-season modes in basketball video games have provided us with the opportunity to simulate into the future, and in doing so, make some wild predictions. Although my cousin and I had a blast actually playing through a season in NBA Live 2000’s Franchise mode, we also had an interesting afternoon simulating through the full 25 years. What’s really wild to me looking back is that the once far off year of 2024 is now the present! In fact, that might just be tougher to get my head around than any of the fictional outcomes in that simulation.

Franchise modes have generally advertised their length, but career modes have been less forthcoming about their endpoint. As such, it was something that I was curious about when I ran some experiments in NBA 2K19 MyCAREER way back in March 2019 (seriously, where does the time go?). I discovered that there is indeed a forced game over after twenty seasons, as well as the answers to some other questions that I had. NBA 2K19 MyCAREER is now only available in a limited offline state, but I’ve kept records and screenshots of my time with it, including that 20-year simulation. To that end, it produced some wild predictions that I certainly have my doubts about!

Whenever I’m playing an older game, I can’t help messing around with some minimalist roster modding! As you may have seen, I recently took the 70+ players in NBA 2K14 PS4 that are still active, and placed them on their current teams. Noticing that four teams could field a full starting five, I decided to play a couple of makeshift 2024 showdowns using a game that still holds up superbly after ten years.

In my latest game of NBA 2K14 PS4 with minimalist 2024 season rosters, I took control of the Los Angeles Clippers with Russell Westbrook, Kawhi Leonard, and Paul George, and faced James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers. With everything that’s gone down, it remains to be seen whether Harden will ever suit up for the 76ers again, but he certainly came to play in this virtual hardwood matchup! The game went down to the wire thanks to some big plays…but also a couple of major blunders on my part. Enjoy the highlights!

I previously played a game between the 2024 Bucks and Warriors, which I posted in a recent YouTube roundup bulletin. My tinkering with the rosters has also allowed me to play some historical matchups with makeshift classic teams, so stay tuned for new entries in my NBA 2K14 Retro Series! NBA Live 06 PC is one of my all-time favourite games, and one of the highlights of the NBA Live series. As such, it was a blast to connect with Dee on Parsec yesterday, and play a co-op game using rosters from the old NBA Live PC Project. Specifically, we used the 2012 season roster to replay the NBA Finals matchup between the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Dee and I took control of the Thunder on this occasion, challenging ourselves to beat the Heat’s Big Three with OKC’s dynamic duo. What followed was an exciting game filled with big shots, emphatic dunks, impressive swats, and a win that wasn’t decided until the final minutes. Dee put together a reel of the best highlights, demonstrating just how fun NBA Live 06 PC can be in 2023. Check it out!

The roster that we were using is still available to download here. We were also using the Freestyle Superstars Replay Pop-Up remover that I released earlier this year for March Modness. We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with a collection of virtual trading cards, based on my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER.

I’m wrapping up my kick with the PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K14 with a month of Wayback Wednesday features, but I also wanted to pay further tribute to the fun I’ve had in MyCAREER. Playing through four full seasons was an absolute blast, and I look forward to continuing the journey in Year 5 when I’m ready for a break from NBA 2K23. Although I’m putting the game and my story topic on the shelf for the moment, I’ve created one last bit of content based on my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER: a series of trading cards.

Now, graphic design certainly isn’t my forte, and the layout I’ve chosen is not exactly original. Indeed, it’s intended to pay tribute to a series of cards by Fleer that were one of the last sets that I actively collected as a teenager back in the late 90s. NBA trading cards hold a lot of nostalgia for me, and playing through NBA 2K14 MyCAREER was a throwback experience, too. On top of being an older game, it also reminded me of the importance of enjoying the journey rather than mindlessly grinding, and feeling enthusiastic enough to create a story topic. As such, these virtual trading cards are meant to commemorate what’s been a fun journey in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER so far.

Although news is running slightly behind schedule, the official NBA 2K Twitter account has been posting some NBA 2K22 screenshots. The latest screens spotlight some of the recent offseason moves.

Specifically, you’ll find Russell Westbrook wearing his new Los Angeles Lakers jersey. DeMar DeRozan and Lonzo Ball can be seen wearing Chicago Bulls garb, while Kemba Walker is sporting the New York Knicks’ uniform. A screenshot of Kyle Lowry in his new Miami Heat jersey has also been shared.
