NBA 2K14 Retro Series: 1995 Western Conference Finals

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: 1995 Western Conference Finals

The NBA 2K14 Retro Series continues with a re-creation of Game 6 of the 1995 Western Conference Finals between the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs! As you may recall, it was the deciding game of that iconic series, as Hakeem Olajuwon battled David Robinson with the season and a trip to the NBA Finals on the line.

As with the other games in the NBA 2K14 Retro Series, my take on Game 6 of the 1995 Western Conference Finals isn’t precise down to the last play and statistic. However, just like the real contest, it was a close one that saw the Spurs attempting some desperation shots in the waning seconds. Although The Dream and The Admiral were at the centre of things, all of the key players on both sides made big dunks, big threes, and big defensive plays in this throwback to the 90s. See for yourself!

In case you missed it, the previous entry in the NBA 2K14 Retro Series flashed back to the 2008 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. Some more retro matchups are on the way, so stay tuned, and be sure to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel! As always, feel free to suggest other basketball video games that you’d like to see Dee and I play as well.

NBA Live 18 Highlights: Lakers vs. Spurs

NBA Live 18 Highlights: Lakers vs. Spurs

Dee and I have connected on a variety of games over the past couple of weeks, as we’ll discuss in the next episode of the NLSC Podcast. In the meantime, you can see how one of those contests went down, as Dee put together the highlights from our NBA Live 18 game.

In the game, Dee and I took control of the Los Angeles Lakers for a co-op clash against the San Antonio Spurs. Dee suggested those teams as the pre-LeBron James, rookie Lonzo Ball Lakers are not usually a team we’d use, while the Spurs also had an unfamiliar look, having entered the post-Tim Duncan era. It proved to be a fun matchup that went right down to the wire! Along the way, we were able to create several highlights, which reminded us that while NBA Live 18 was a rough release in many ways, it can still be quite enjoyable. See for yourself!

We’re frequently uploading highlights from our co-op and individual basketball gaming sessions to the NLSC YouTube channel, in addition to the weekly Top 10 Plays, video essays, and more, so be sure to subscribe! As always, also feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play.

Wayback Wednesday: Ben Wallace & NBA Live 07

Wayback Wednesday: Ben Wallace & NBA Live 07

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at Ben Wallace and his short stint with the Chicago Bulls, and how I associate it with NBA Live 07.

I had to check the archives to see if I’ve ever listed my favourite players in any of my articles. The closest I’ve come was naming my All-Time Starting Five in The Friday Five back in 2014, though I’m not sure I’d still choose that lineup today! One of those players definitely isn’t a favourite of mine, while another one is rapidly becoming a former favourite (seriously, Pip: stop it, get some help!). In any event, while my favourites have come up on the NLSC Podcast and I’ve alluded to them in various articles over the years, I haven’t yet dedicated an entire feature to discussing them.

By the same token, I haven’t ever discussed my least favourite players, except in passing. One name that you may have heard me mention on our podcast is Ben Wallace. Although I acknowledge his talent and importance as a member of the 2004 Detroit Pistons, I’m absolutely not a fan of Big Ben. That’s not to cast aspersions on him personally, as I obviously don’t know him. We all have our sporting villains though, and ironically, the four-time Defensive Player of the Year was solidified as one of mine after playing for my favourite team. It’s a stint that’s represented in one of my all-time least favourite games, NBA Live 07. Let’s take a look back…way back…

Wayback Wednesday: NBA Live 06 PC Dynasty Re-Made On Xbox 360

Wayback Wednesday: NBA Live 06 PC Dynasty Re-Made On Xbox 360

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, it’s a highlight reel from my re-creation of my NBA Live 06 PC Dynasty with the Chicago Bulls on Xbox 360.

My Chicago Bulls Dynasty in NBA Live 06 PC remains one of my all-time favourite experiences, in one of my all-time favourite basketball video games. This year, I’ve come to appreciate the Xbox 360 version of NBA Live 06 as well, though the game is of course lacking Dynasty mode. Nevertheless, the Xbox 360 version has recently been my retro kick. Just for fun, I re-created the roster from Year 1 of my PC Dynasty on Xbox 360. I ended up playing a game against the San Antonio Spurs, the team that I defeated in that first season to clinch the Bulls’ seventh championship. As I recorded some highlights from the game, you can join me as I take a look back…way back…

As always, I’m never sure how long a retro kick will last. Between this re-creation, the 2006 All-Star Game, and some other games that I’ve played in the Xbox 360 version of NBA Live 06 however, I’ve really enjoyed revisiting it. Although its lack of depth made for a shaky start to the seventh generation, it’s frankly an underrated game that deserves more credit for its gameplay and graphical advancements. Hopefully, you’ve enjoyed the highlights. Don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more video content!

Wayback Wednesday: NBA What Ifs Portrayed in NBA Live 10

Wayback Wednesday: NBA What Ifs Portrayed in NBA Live 10

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m taking a look back at some famous NBA What Ifs, and portraying them in NBA Live 10.

What Ifs can be fun to ponder, whether they concern the NBA or video games. There are trades and signings that, if they’d happened, would’ve changed the course of NBA history. Likewise, we can point to game-changing moments in the history of the virtual hardwood. Indeed, NBA Live 10 is an example of such a turning point. If EA Sports had elected to continue building on the base it established rather than trying to reboot the series with the ill-fated NBA Elite 11, the basketball gaming landscape would undoubtedly be very different today.

As far as NBA What Ifs are concerned though, they’re something that we can play out in video games. It’s a great concept for a roster, and while that’s not what I’m doing today, I’ve decided to mix a couple of ideas together by reflecting on some of the biggest NBA What Ifs and portraying them using NBA Live 10; a game that has an air of What If about it. Obviously there are some other historical NBA What Ifs that I won’t be touching on here because the players aren’t in NBA Live 10, but feel free to discuss those in the comments as well. Let’s wonder what might have been as we take a look back…way back…

The Sunday Substitute: My Last 5 MyCAREER Campaigns From Worst to Best

My player in NBA 2K16 posing with DeMarcus Cousins.

What’s that? A surprise edition of The Sunday Substitute to start the new year? With the next generation of consoles here, I’ve decided to reflect on my PS4 MyCAREER experiences and rank them from worst to best.

MyCAREER has been a part of my basketball video game experience ever since I first picked up the mode in NBA 2K10, back when it was called My Player. However, it wasn’t until I purchased my PS4 that I played the game annually (except for NBA 2K18). During my run on PS4, I made a conscious decision to make each MyCAREER experience unique. For this reason, I played a different position for each game.

Every situation had its strengths and weaknesses, but some stood out more than others. So, I’m going to rank each of my last five MyCAREER campaigns on PS4 from worst to best. Let’s get this show on the road!

NLSC Podcast #336: I’m A Surgeon With This Pro Stick

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #336 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this week’s show.

Before we get to this week’s gaming news, we take a moment to reflect on the San Antonio Spurs’ 22-year Playoff streak coming to an end. On the subject of change, however, we have our first developer blog for NBA 2K21 Current Gen, previewing this year’s gameplay. We break down the changes to the Pro Stick, including the new dribbling and shooting controls, and other details provided by the blog. With a demo coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on August 24th, we also speculate on what it will entail, and discuss the likelihood of a Next Gen demo later this year. We’ve also got some new retro basketball game purchases to talk about, and once again touch on the modding possibilities for NBA 2K21 PC.

What’s your take on this week’s conversation? Sound off in the comments section below, or join in the discussion here in the Forum! Additionally, feel free to hit us up with any feedback on the episode, as well as suggestions for topics that you’d like to hear us discuss in future episodes. Six New Classic Teams Added in NBA 2K20

2010 Portland Trail Blazers in NBA 2K20

The new All-Decade teams aren’t the only historical squads that have been added this year. Six new classic teams have been added to the roster in NBA 2K20: the 2003 Phoenix Suns, 2007 Washington Wizards, 2010 Portland Trail Blazers, 2014 San Antonio Spurs, 2014 Los Angeles Clippers, and 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers.

Funnily enough, the 2014 Spurs, 2003 Suns, 2007 Wizards, and 2014 Clippers are all teams that I’ve mentioned in my ongoing Friday Five series discussing retro squads I’d like to see added to the game. Assuming that none of the teams from NBA 2K19 have been removed, each of the new classic teams has at least one opponent from the same year in the game, as well as other squads from around the same era.

Check out screenshots of the six new additions below. What are your thoughts on the new classic teams in NBA 2K20? Are any of the squads ones that you were hoping to see and are looking forward to playing with? Who else would you like to see added in future games? Have your say in the comments section below, and join in the discussion taking place here in the NBA 2K20 section of the NLSC Forum!

Wayback Wednesday: NBA Live Championship Screenshots

Boston Celtics Championship in NBA Live 08

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content.

When posting bulletins about the NBA Champions around ten years ago, I included screenshots of the winning team taken from the current NBA Live game. With the standalone Playoffs mode, it was easy enough to fire up the PC version, load up the latest NLSC roster update, and sim through a postseason. Because NBA Live’s simulation engine could be unpredictable, I usually had to place star players on the injured reserve so that the appropriate teams could make it through to the NBA Finals, and the correct team then win the championship.

I usually held off on capturing the screenshots until the series was close to being decided, so that I could make sure the teams were playing in the correct venue (and in one instance, wearing the correct jerseys). I came across those old NBA Live championship screenshots while digging through my archives recently, and I thought that they’d be fun to share for this week’s Wayback Wednesday.

Let’s take a look back…way back…

NLSC Podcast – Episode #182

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #182 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane, Kenny, and myself as we discuss opportunities for NBA Live 17, some more exciting victories in 2K Pro-Am, the start of the 2017 NBA season, and more.

On this week’s show…

  • It appears as though advertising is starting to appear after the third quarter in NBA 2K17. We discuss the controversial practice of in-game advertising in AAA titles.
  • Once again, we touch on the problems with an “always online” approach to modes such as MyCAREER, after a recent PSN outage made it impossible to play.
  • With some of the dissatisfaction gamers have with NBA 2K17 and the way 2K has handled things with VC and so forth, has the door been left open for NBA Live 17?
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: more clutch wins for the NLSC 2K Pro-Am squad, a blossoming rivalry, a trip to MyPARK, and the Walk-On experience.
  • The 2017 NBA season has tipped off! We talk about the first couple of days which saw a triple-double from LeBron James, a huge win for the San Antonio Spurs, big numbers from Anthony Davis, and the official debut of Joel Embiid.
