We’re just a few days away from the release of the NBA Live 19 demo, which will be hitting the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace on August 24th. As per developer Cornell Gunter, the demo launches at midnight, so there’ll be no need to create an international account to skip the wait.

Although the NBA Live 19 demo will obviously be far more restricted compared to the full version of NBA Live 19, it will offer a substantial glimpse at the game. We’ll be able to play through The Rise, take part in LIVE Events, customise our court and The One player, run through drills and scrimmages, and play 1v1. Play Now will also be available, with NBA Play Now featuring the Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors, and WNBA Play Now featuring the Los Angeles Sparks and Minnesota Lynx.

Other modes of play, such as Franchise and Ultimate Team, will not be available. It remains to be seen whether the NBA Live 19 demo will receive updates and additional content as was the case last year, but we’ll be sure to keep everyone posted of any such developments. We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games. This week, I’m tipping things off with a few thoughts on what has to happen with the NBA content in NBA Live 19, from gameplay to game modes.

The NBA Live 19 demo will be out later this week, and I for one am excited. While NBA Live 18 took many steps in the right direction, there was still a certain amount of roughness and room for improvement. From everything we’ve seen and heard so far, it seems that NBA Live 19 has made another pleasing leap forward. While I do expect that there will still be ways in which the game can get even better in the future, it’s shaping up to be a good year for NBA Live as it continues to make its way back to being a viable alternative for sim basketball gamers.

To that end, however, there is an area that is of some concern: the NBA content. So far, the previews have mostly focused on The One, with a particular emphasis on The Streets World Tour. While this is a tremendous hook for NBA Live 19 and has clearly led to some positive buzz, many of us are a little concerned about the NBA side of the game. Although NBA Live does need to have its own appeal and approach, there are certain aspects where it needs to go head to head with NBA 2K, namely in terms of being a realistic and enjoyable NBA sim. From modes to gameplay, a lot of us are hoping that NBA Live 19 is as good on the NBA hardwood as it is in The Streets.

Episode #258 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! We’re back on the air after taking an unexpected break last week, giving us a fortnight of news to discuss. Join Arcane and I as we chat about the recent developments in basketball gaming including female Create-a-Player in NBA Live 19, the first developer blog for NBA 2K19, and the big announcement regarding NBA 2K Playgrounds 2.

On this week’s show…

• EA Sports has announced the addition of Female Create-a-Player in NBA Live 19. It’s a cool addition to The One, though predictably, there have been some childish reactions to the news.
• While we still want to hear about the NBA side of things in NBA Live 19, a few other interesting tidbits have been revealed, including court customisation. A recent interview also acknowledged the possibility of NBA Live returning to the PC platform.
• The first NBA 2K19 developer blog delivered some great news about MyLEAGUE, MyGM, and MyLEAGUE Online. While we’ve been conditioned to take developer blogs with a grain of salt, it seems that a lot of great work has gone into the franchise experience this year.
• Looking back at last year’s preview season, we expect the flow of information to be steadier from here on out. We talk a little about some of the details we want to hear about.
• We now know that 2K Sports will be publishing NBA Playgrounds 2, now titled NBA 2K Playgrounds 2. It remains to be seen what it’ll mean for the game, and we do have some concerns. Also, we’d like to see EA bring NBA Jam back.
• Episode #258 of the NLSC Podcast wraps up with a quick chat about some recent NBA news, including Dwyane Wade’s future and new team branding.

Although an official announcement has yet to be made, a few more tidbits about NBA Live 19 have been revealed. The information comes courtesy of Shacknews – who have posted an extended preview of the game complete with raw gameplay footage – and influencers including Will OS and NBA Live Girl. A few other gameplay videos, and videos discussing details that have leaked, have also been posted.

It seems that we’ll be able to create our own custom courts in The One this year, in a manner very similar to the hometown blacktop in NBA Street Homecourt, as well as the custom courts in NBA 2K’s MyTEAM and 2K Pro-Am modes. More details are no doubt forthcoming in an official announcement and preview. Speaking of courts, the video from Shacknews also provides us with as glimpse of the custom Joel Embiid court, which was listed as one of the pre-order bonuses.

The video also confirms that quarters have been added to games in The Streets, which were previously all played under the “First to 21” win condition. In addition to uncut gameplay, it also provides an overview (and naturally, spoilers) of The Rise, the story that provides the backdrop to The One in NBA Live 19. The hour long video runs from the beginning of the story at Quai 54, through the Draft Combine and concluding at the NBA Draft itself.

Also of interest, Sports Gamers Online recently had a chance to interview NBA Live 19 Creative Director, Connor Dougan. Connor was actually asked about a PC version of NBA Live, and while he confirmed it isn’t happening this year, he expressed his support for the idea, even mentioning modding. It was cool to hear, so be sure to check out the interview for his full comments!

With NBA Live 19 just six weeks away, more information should hopefully be coming through fairly steadily. After teasing a special announcement with a short video featuring the Los Angeles Sparks’ Candace Parker, EA Sports has revealed that NBA Live 19 will feature female Create-a-Player functionality. Although the WNBA was featured in its own Play Now mode in NBA Live 18, this marks the first time that NBA Live will allow gamers to create female players.

As explained in an article over on Game Informer, female avatars will be playable in LIVE Run, LIVE Events, and The Streets World Tour, using the same progression system as their male counterparts. They will not be playable in The League however, and at this time, there is no equivalent WNBA career mode. Creative Director Ryan Santos has confirmed that it’s something that has been discussed, and may be in the game as soon as next year.

Although there won’t be a dedicated career or season mode for the WNBA, the league’s players will still have a presence in The Streets, along with any female ballers that gamers create. Their inclusion in the mode was hinted at in the very first teaser for NBA Live 19.

EA Sports has released a new NBA Live 19 trailer, spotlighting the authentic courts from around the globe that will be featured in The Streets. The trailer prominently features Hall of Famer Allen Iverson, who confirmed on Twitter that he is part of the NBA Live Squad, and will therefore have a presence in the mode. Cover player Joel Embiid also appears in the trailer.

The featured venues shown in the trailer are Quai 54, Rio De Janerio, The Tenement, The Cage, Cherashore Playground, Drew League, Venice Beach, Barry Farms, Kezar Pavilion, Hoop Dome, Margaret Hie Ding Lin Park, Dyckman Park, Seattle Pacific University, and Rucker Park. Over the past week, several NBA Live 19 gameplay videos have been posted in the wake of EA Play 2018. The footage comes courtesy of various influencers and content creators who were present at the event, and was recorded directly; no shaky over the shoulder leaked footage! Check out the videos embedded below for a first look at the gameplay, and commentary from EA Play attendees.

The prevailing attitude from gamers who got their hands on NBA Live 19 at EA Play is that it feels and plays a lot better than NBA Live 18. Improvements to transitional animations, as well as dunks and layups, are evident in the footage that’s been posted. However, it is also very encouraging to hear from dedicated basketball gamers that the experience on the sticks is greatly improved.

Attendees also had a chance to speak with various members of the development team, who passed along some additional information. As per Shopmaster’s chat with Connor Dougan, The Streets/LIVE Pro-Am will consist of the Pro-Am Tour, 3v3, and 5v5. There’ll be options to play with squads, as well as games with halves and four quarters. More information should be released in due course, but be sure to check out the interviews below for some extra tidbits.

Finally, a few work-in-progress screenshots featuring various players, among them Kevin Durant, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, and Ben Simmons, have been released. With the trailer giving us our first glimpse of NBA Live 19 in action, we also have some initial details about the game. The official website has posted several informative articles, and media outlets such as SBNation and The Undefeated are also providing an insight into what’s new.

There’s a lot to digest from the articles, and I encourage you to read them in full, but I’ll summarise them as best I can. This year, we’ll be able to build a squad of current and former NBA players, while competing for rank and rewards. The One has been revamped with a new progression system, with Icon abilities based on real players past and present. This works independently of the Playstyles, Traits, and so forth, which are still in effect. A new story has also been implemented this year.

On top of that, The One has gone global in NBA Live 19, with The Streets World Tour. This involves playing on courts from around the world, and recruiting players for your squad. A new narrative system has been added to The League, for those who prefer the NBA side of things. There are also more hairstyles, tattoos, and other player creation elements.

Gameplay has also been a focus this year. Real Player Motion technology has been implemented to improve player movement and animations. This includes a lot of signature player animations compared to recent years. Right stick dribbling remains, but has been enhanced. There are new triple-threat moves, and one-on-one play has been improved at both ends, including playing off-ball. New AI also focuses on bringing more realism and dynamic play to NBA Live 19.

Finally, there will be a demo again this year. We’ll be able to download it on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on August 24th, ahead of the September 7th release.

We have our first teaser screenshot for NBA Live 19, via the official NBA Live Instagram account. The screenshot features a variety of current and former NBA players posing on a street court, with the Legends wearing their throwback jerseys. WNBA player Maya Moore and NBA Street character Stretch are also notably among the players in the screenshot.

While there’s still a lot to learn about NBA Live 19, this obviously confirms the presence of NBA Legends, at least one NBA Street character, and WNBA players in this year’s game. It remains to be seen what capacity Legends and WNBA players will appear in throughout the game, but if nothing else, it seems as though they’ll be present in The Streets. From the screenshot, and other teasers from the developers on Twitter, it seems that international street courts will also be featured this year.

NBA Live 19’s presence at EA Play 2018 will allow us to find out more about the game very soon. Details are expected to be revealed during EA’s press conference, which will begin in about eleven hours. You can stream it live here on YouTube, or watch it below once it begins.

• EA Sports are also partnering with SportsCrate. We discuss the promising nature of the commercial partnerships in NBA Live 18, and what it means for the recovering strength of the brand.
• And then there were 250! The top players from the NBA 2K League Combine have advanced to the next round, but will it have any affect on us casual 2K Pro-Am gamers?
• We wrap up Episode #239 of the NLSC Podcast with Our Week in Basketball Gaming, which included another session of 2K Pro-Am where nothing was going right, and hitting The Streets with a brand new player in NBA Live 18.

This week, I’m tipping things off with a few thoughts on the recent Star Wars: Battlefront II events that were available in NBA Live 18.

As you may know, EA Sports recently introduced some crossover content in its sports titles, promoting the upcoming release of Star Wars: Battlefront II. For NBA Live 18, this took the form of Live Events challenges, all of which take place on a fictional Star Wars-themed court (located in Orlando, of course), with various Battlefront II-inspired gear and accessories available in the reward crates. As it stands, there’s currently a last call for the Battlefront II Challenge, giving gamers one final chance to earn some Inferno Squad-themed gear for their players to wear in The Streets.

I must admit that with all the grinding I’ve been doing to improve my NBA 2K18 MyPLAYER for 2K Pro-Am, I haven’t taken part in as many Live Events in NBA Live 18 as I’d like. However, having caught the trailer for the Battlefront II events, I wanted to make sure that I at least played a game or two before the promotion was over. The fictional court certainly looked cool, and I figured it wouldn’t hurt to stock up on some extra gear for my player to wear in The Streets. As such, I jumped online in NBA Live 18 last week, and managed to take part in a few games.

The speculation is over! Houston Rockets All-Star guard James Harden has been officially announced as the cover player for NBA Live 18. Originally, the news was inadvertently leaked in a since-deleted video by YouTuber iMav3riq, but we now have official confirmation. Harden was previously one of four different cover players for NBA 2K16, along with Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, and Michael Jordan (Special Edition only). Check out the cover art below!

Notably, Harden was among the players who appeared in the first reveal screenshots, as well as the early gameplay trailers for NBA Live 18. While this obviously seems like a strong hint in retrospect, it’s also worth noting that a couple of screenshots of DeMar DeRozan were also released at the same time, despite him being signed to appear on the Canadian cover of NBA 2K18.

EA Sports has released a trailer to coincide with the official announcement. As you would expect, it focuses on James Harden himself, playing in both The League and The Streets. Check it out below, or catch it here on YouTube if you can’t see the embedded video.

The NBA Live 18 demo is also out today. Depending on your timezone – or indeed, the timezone of the account you’re currently using – it’s already available to download. The game’s release date has been confirmed for September 15th, which sees it going head to head with NBA 2K18’s Early Tip-Off Weekend. EA Sports are also offering a 33% discount for pre-orders. No further word on the Deluxe edition as yet.

Confirming rumours from a few weeks ago, EA Sports has announced that the NBA Live 18 demo will be available on August 11th. Progress from the demo will once again carry over into the full version as it did with NBA Live 16, so presumably the companion app for face scanning will also be made available next week. That hasn’t been confirmed as yet though, nor are there any other further details on the demo right now.

We do have some new information about The Streets, however. As explained by the feature page over on the official website, The Streets incorporates the Pro-Am experience of The One, NBA Live 18’s brand new single player career mode. While the NBA portion of your career will take place in The League, you’ll also be able to head to The Streets to take part in LIVE Events challenges, play cooperative multiplayer games in LIVE Run, and build a legacy on the Pro-Am Tour.

Judging by the screenshots on the feature page, it appears as though reward crates have been implemented in NBA Live 18. These crates will be earned by completing the LIVE Events, which will consist of real-time challenges all year long. You can check out the screenshots below.

Seven legendary Pro-Am locations have also been confirmed: Rucker Park (New York), the Drew League (Compton), Venice Beach (Los Angeles), The Crawsover (Seattle), Dyckman Park (New York), Barry Farms (Washington), and Cherashore Playground (Philadelphia). EA Sports has released videos previewing all the courts, which you can check out below.

Hopefully, more details on The One, as well as Dynasty, Ultimate Team, and of course gameplay itself, are coming in the near future. With any luck, previews for NBA Live 18 and NBA 2K18 will be rolling out steadily over the next few weeks, and of course, we’ll be able to get our hands on the demo very soon.
