25th Anniversary of NBA Live: NBA Live 2001 Retrospective

25th Anniversary of NBA Live: NBA Live 2001 Retrospective

To mark the 25th Anniversary of NBA Live, we’re taking a look back at every game in the series with retrospectives and other fun content! This also includes re-running some features from our 20th Anniversary celebrations, with a few revisions. Whether you’re a long-time basketball gamer who grew up with NBA Live and are keen on taking a trip down memory lane, or you’re new to the series and want to learn about its history, we hope that you enjoy celebrating the 25th Anniversary of NBA Live here at the NLSC! Today, it’s a retrospective of NBA Live 2001.

After firmly holding the title of the best NBA sim game on the market through the 90s and consistently improving from year to year, NBA Live 2001 was one of the first missteps for the NBA Live series. To be clear, I definitely don’t see it as an all-around terrible game, and there are games in the series that are a lot rougher around the edges, but NBA Live 2001 did have some significant problems. Looking back at the game and remembering the time I spent with it, I’d describe it as fun, but flawed. Its predecessors hadn’t been perfect of course, so was it just a case of impossibly high expectations after NBA Live 2000? Let’s revisit NBA Live 2001 and see.

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.08 Released; Includes PS4 Pro Fixes

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.08

Patch 1.08 for NBA 2K20 is now available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. A glance at the Steam Database shows that the PC patch is currently with QA, and so should be coming through soon. As always, the update will come through automatically as long as you’re online; if you do encounter any difficulties, try restarting your console or Steam client.

As with the last update, the patch notes for 1.08 are rather lacklustre to say the least. The full notes are as follows:

  • Improved performance for PS4 Pro users.
  • Improvements to the MyPLAYER Nation feature in MyCAREER. Help lead your team to the title!
  • Fixed an issue that would sometimes prevent users from joining their friends in the Neighborhood, and/or would sometimes load the invited friend into the wrong location.
  • Many, many more fixes included to improve the overall experience of NBA 2K20!

Share your impressions of NBA 2K20 Patch 1.08 in the comments below, and join in the discussion taking place here in the Forum. You can also find a complete update history for the game here in our Wiki. If any further details come through I’ll be sure to post them, as well as update the bulletin when the PC patch is released.

UPDATE: The PC patch is now available.

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #298 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! We’re back on the air after a longer than expected hiatus, and man, do we have some news to catch up on! Join guest co-host Dee4Three and I as we chat about NBA Live 20 being cancelled, the future of NBA Live, and the latest updates for NBA 2K20 and NBA 2K Playgrounds 2.

NBA 2K20 has been out for around nine weeks now, and has already received several patches. Although the updates have been controversial due to their size, quantity, and lack of detailed patch notes, we are pleased with some of the changes. This leads to a discussion about transparency, toxicity, and overall, our current impressions of the game. We also talk about the latest update for NBA 2K Playgrounds 2, and how the game has turned out. After that, we turn our attention to this week’s main topic: NBA Live 20’s cancellation. Was it the right call? How does it affect the brand’s image? What needs to happen with NBA Live 21? Is it time for another Wishlist? And finally, what happens to basketball gaming as we enter a new generation?

Basketball Classics v0.9.0 Released; New Content, Fixes

Basketball Classics v0.9.0

Basketball Classics v0.9.0 has been released! The update should come through automatically as long as you have an active Internet connection. If it doesn’t, try restarting your Steam client.

v0.9.0 is a big release, as Namo Gamo anticipates it being the last major update while Basketball Classics is still in Early Access. The latest update expands upon Story Mode, and adds new teams and arenas including a street court. It also includes new halftime shows, some fixes and gameplay tweaks, and adds over and back violations. Please see below for the full patch notes!

The game is available to purchase here on Steam. As I’ve said before, Basketball Classics is a fantastic throwback to the 8-bit and 16-bit era of hoops games, with the benefit of several modern twists. Be sure to check out my interview with Josh and Dave from Namo Gamo if you haven’t already, as it was a fun conversation! Feel free to share your thoughts on Basketball Classics v0.9.0 in the comments section below, as well as join in the discussion here in the Forum.

NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 Patch 1.20 Adds New Content

NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 Patch 1.20

Patch 1.20 is now available for NBA 2K Playgrounds 2, and should download automatically as long as you have an active Internet connection. If you run into any issues, try checking for the update manually, or restarting your console or Steam client. The patch is a content update for the 2020 season, and the release notes are as follows:

  • 22 new playable characters
  • 6 returning courts from NBA Playgrounds
  • 30 new vanity items
  • 50 new court editor items
  • Playable Ronnie 2K!

For the record, the last patch for NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 was released back in May. Since there haven’t been any announcements regarding a new title, it appears as though the current release will be updated for a while longer. As always, feel free to share your thoughts on Patch 1.20 for NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 in the comments section below, as well as join in the discussion here in the NLSC Forum.

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.07 Released: MyPLAYER Nation, More

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.07

Patch 1.07 for NBA 2K20 has been released, just in time for the tip-off of the 2020 NBA season. The update is available for the PC (257 MB), PlayStation 4 (18.5 GB), and Xbox One (37.35 GB) versions of NBA 2K20, and will download automatically as long as you have an active Internet connection. If you do encounter any issues, try restarting your console or Steam client.

As with the previous title update, the official patch notes are rather lacking in detail. They are as follows:

  • To celebrate the start of the NBA season, we are preparing to launch our brand new ‘MyPLAYER Nation’ feature! Once the season has officially tipped off, head into MyCAREER to learn more about MyPLAYER Nation and how you can earn 2x VC, 2x MyPOINTS, AND 2x Badge Points while representing your team!
  • Season 3 is here! NBA 2K League Qualifying begins 10/22 and runs through 11/10. More info: https://2kleague.nba.com/news/2019-qualifier/
  • Addressed an issue where your controller settings would reset to your previous default when making changes and changing Neighborhoods (e.g. joining a friend elsewhere).
  • Many, many more fixes included to improve the overall experience of NBA 2K20!

However, it appears as though some more specific details about changes in Patch 1.07 for NBA 2K20 have been discovered. Apparently, the “many, many more fixes” include addressing issues with MyPLAYER bugs, jersey and shoe updates, and Dynamic Duo cards in MyTEAM. There has also been a reduction to shooters falling in traffic, and a correction for illegal screen calls. These additional notes have been added to the update history in our Wiki (thanks to Derfla76 for the assist!).

As always, feel free to share your thoughts on the latest patch in the comments section below, as well as join in the discussion here in the NLSC Forum!

Monday Tip-Off: Revenge of the Nerfs

Monday Tip-Off: Revenge of the Nerfs

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games. This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on the recent nerfs to VC rewards in NBA 2K20, and the underlying issues with transparency that they represent.

By now, you’ve probably heard that a recent update for NBA 2K20 has nerfed the amount of VC for starting salaries and endorsements in MyCAREER. While the nerfs to salaries only apply to new games, several NBA 2K20 gamers have reported that the amount of VC they’ve already negotiated for endorsement deals has been retroactively reduced. On top of that, it’s now far more difficult to negotiate with teams and brands, as there’s very little wiggle room in the counteroffers that they will accept. In short, VC can no longer be earned as quickly as it could be at launch.

Nerfs to VC, Badge progression, and other aspects of NBA 2K games are nothing new. Changes like this are always going to be controversial and anger a portion of the userbase, but the main point of contention for most gamers is that we didn’t receive any notice. The nerfs weren’t listed among the laughably short list of patch notes for the most recent update, nor were they announced or explained via the game’s official social media accounts. While this particular issue only affects MyCAREER, it’s emblematic of a much bigger and recurring problem with NBA 2K, that being an overall lack of transparency, communication, and goodwill.

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.06 Addresses Issues in Neighborhood

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.06

Patch 1.06 has come through for NBA 2K20. The patch is currently available for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game, and should hopefully be out on PC soon. As always, the update should download automatically as long as you have an active Internet connection. If you do encounter any difficulties, try restarting your console (or Steam client once the PC patch has been released).

The patch primarily addresses technical issues with The Neighborhood in MyCAREER, along with some other online glitches. The official patch notes are as follows:

  • Fixes incorrect MyPLAYERs loading when joining friends in The Neighborhood
  • Fixes users getting disconnected during timeouts in some online game modes
  • Fixes hanging when dismissing the phone in The Neighborhood
  • Many more fixes

Among the “many more fixes” are resolutions to blue screen errors on PS4, loading into MyCAREER with the wrong build, and other random crashes. Information on NBA 2K20 Patch 1.06 has been added to the game’s update history here in our Wiki. Feel free to share your impressions of the latest update in the comments section below, as well as join in the discussion here in the NLSC Forum. I’ll update this bulletin when PC patch is out.

UPDATE: As of October 16th, the PC patch is now available.

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.05 Addresses Gameplay, Technical Issues

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.05

Patch 1.05 is now available for NBA 2K20. It will come through automatically for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions, as long as you have an active Internet connection. If you run into any issues, try restarting your console or Steam client, or checking for the update manually.

It’s a considerable update, weighing in at 626.8 MB on PC, 20.6 GB on PS4, and 35.8 GB on XB1. Unfortunately the patch notes aren’t very detailed, filing most of the changes under the heading of “Many, many more fixes included to improve the overall experience of NBA 2K20”. However, Mike Wang has provided some additional insights on Twitter regarding changes to the gameplay. In addition to addressing disconnection issues, Patch 1.05 for NBA 2K20 adjusts “full white” releases, buffs the Pick Dodger Badge, fixes baseline dunks that weren’t triggering properly, and widens the speed gap.

You can check out the official patch notes below, along with Beluba’s Tweets. I’ve also added that information to the update history for NBA 2K20 over in our Wiki. Feel free to share your thoughts on the update in the comments below, as well as join in the discussion here in the Forum.

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.04 Addresses Hang in The Neighborhood

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.04

Patch 1.04 has come through for NBA 2K20 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It should download automatically but if you encounter any issues, try restarting your Steam client or console, or checking for the update manually.

The latest patch is very small compared to the previous update, and fixes an issue with the game hanging in The Neighborhood after viewing the Animation Store. There are no further patch notes, so it doesn’t appear that there are any other fixes of note in the update.

You can find a complete update history for NBA 2K20 here in our Wiki. Feel free to add your thoughts on Patch 1.04 for NBA 2K20 in the comments section below, as well as join in the discussion here in the NLSC Forum.

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.03 Includes Bug Fixes, Various Enhancements

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.03

Patch 1.03 for NBA 2K20 is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It should come through automatically as long as you have an active Internet connection; if it doesn’t, try restarting your console or Steam client, or checking for new updates manually. The patch notes are as follows:

  • Fixed a major issue that was causing the game to hang at intermittent times (e.g. when accessing the VIP Stats menu, when completing games in Domination, when playing Play Now Online games, and more).
  • Addressed a number of issues in MyCAREER to greatly improve the user experience in that mode.
  • Fixed an issue where some MyPLAYER names would disappear (may need to create a new build to correct existing saves).
  • Numerous Gameplay improvements & fixes including: support for standing stepback escapes and finishing alley-oops with Pro Stick, out of bounds awareness improvements, more reliable interior shot defense contact detection, logic fixes for certain badges, and much more.
  • Addressed an exploit that allowed users to play players out of position in MyTEAM.
  • Fixed an issue where some users were reporting they were not receiving the correct reward cards from Domination games in MyTEAM.
  • Fixed an issue where some users were not receiving their awards when achieving new Collector Levels in MyTEAM.
  • Many, many more fixes included to improve the overall experience of NBA 2K20!

The notes for NBA 2K20 Patch 1.03 have also been added to the game’s update history in our Wiki. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below, as well as join in the discussion here in the NLSC Forum!

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.02 Features Speed Adjustments

NBA 2K20 Patch 1.02

Patch 1.02 has come through for NBA 2K20 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and should be hitting the Nintendo Switch sometime soon. As with all official patches, it will come through automatically as long as you have an active Internet connection. If it doesn’t, try restarting your console or Steam client, or checking for the update manually.

There aren’t any detailed patch notes at this time, but Mike Wang has revealed that it features a slight stamina buff, and an increase to player speed in The Playground. Beluba has also noted that speed was boosted more than intended, and said that this will be addressed in another patch that’s coming soon.

I’ve created an article over in our Wiki to keep track of all the updates for NBA 2K20. I’ll be updating it throughout the year, but as always, any help in keeping it current and accurate would be most appreciated. In the meantime, feel free to share your thoughts on Patch 1.02 for NBA 2K20 in the comments section below, as well as join in the discussion here in the NLSC Forum. For those who missed it, I posted my initial impressions of the game in this week’s Monday Tip-Off, and will have a full review out soon.

Basketball Classics v0.8.1 Adds New Rosters, Shoes

Basketball Classics v0.8.1

Exciting news! Basketball Classics is fast approaching a full release on Steam, and in the meantime, has received a new update. Version 0.8.1 is a content update for the game, and will come through automatically as long as you’re online when you fire up Steam.

Three seasons have been added to the roster: 1995, 2011, and 2019. This amounts to 240 new players spanning 48 teams, complete with new uniforms and individual attributes. These new teams are playable in both exhibition and the new Season mode that was added in the previous update.

You’ll also find signature shoes on some of the best players in the game, and some teams have also coordinated their style. This has been done to make players further stand out from one another visually, as well as in their abilities.

As I’ve said before, Basketball Classics is a great retro-oriented hoops game for PC that combines some modern mechanics with an old school aesthetic. It launched through Steam Early Access in a very impressive state, and has only gotten better since then. I’d definitely recommend checking it out, and am looking forward to the full release. For more insights into the development of the game, check out our chat with Josh and Dave!

NLSC Podcast #290: The Craziness Begins

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #290 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! I’m flying solo in this week’s return show, which catches up on the first snippets of this year’s preview season, a couple of recent patches, and one of the craziest offseasons in recent memory (if not all-time).

Forget March Madness; July has tipped off the craziness as far as the NBA and virtual hardwood are concerned! The cover players and pre-order bonuses for NBA 2K20 have been revealed, and there’s some good news as the Early Tip-Off Weekend is no more. A teaser trailer and a few screenshots have also given us a glimpse of the game, and if nothing else, the lighting looks promising. NBA 2K19 has also received a patch that encourages NBA 2K20 pre-orders, along with a couple of minor fixes. Meanwhile, NBA Live 19 has received further tuning for shooting and shot contests, which was great to see following issues with Patch 1.25. Finally, there was a flurry of big names changing jerseys through trades and free agency. It’s going to be a wild year in the real NBA, and on the virtual hardwood!

Tune in below!

NBA 2K19 Patch 1.10 Includes NBA 2K20 Pre-Order Offer

NBA 2K20 Offer Added by NBA 2K19 Patch 1.10

NBA 2K19 Patch 1.10 is now available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It should come through automatically as long as your console has an active Internet connection. If you encounter any difficulties, try restarting your console or checking for the update manually.

There aren’t any official patch notes as of this writing, but gamers over on Reddit are reporting that a dribble glitch in Pro-Am has been resolved, and a foul limit has been added to Triple Threat games in MyTEAM.

A noticeable change that is easy to confirm is the addition of a pre-order bonus for NBA 2K20. A pop-up now appears before the main menu, offering a 10% discount on the digital edition of this year’s game. The offer is only available for a limited time, and will likely be removed in a further patch.

I’ve added what we know about NBA 2K19 Patch 1.10 to the update history in our Wiki, as well as this topic in the NLSC Forum. I’ll be sure to update all of our resources (as well as this bulletin) if any further information is released. In the meantime, feel free to add your observations in the comments below, or in the Forum topic.
