NLSC Podcast #519: Infinite NBA Modes To Keep Us Hooked

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #519 of the NLSC Podcast!

We’re tipping things off this week with a strange (but not altogether surprising) incident on Twitter/X. Indeed, the quality of discourse on social media is on our minds this week, as we feel compelled to respond to the latest ridiculous narrative being pushed about Michael Jordan and NBA history. We also check in with Troydan’s quest to pull a 100 Overall card in NBA 2K24 MyTEAM, and discuss the new mobile game, NBA Infinite. In this week’s mailbag/featured discussion, we join the community in reminiscing about the basketball video game modes that have kept us hooked over the years, and the titles that we played them in.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! As always, thanks for tuning in, and go get buckets!

NLSC Podcast #484: NCAA Basketball, NBA 2K18, & Damian Lillard

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #484 of the NLSC Podcast!

The community has spoken: whether it comes from EA Sports, 2K Sports, or indeed both, many of us are very keen to see a new college basketball game! From licensed players and gameplay to presentation and features, we join the community in discussing our expectations for a hypothetical NCAA title. Elsewhere, we’ve noticed a couple of Tweets attempting to rehabilitate NBA 2K18’s image. Naturally, we have a few thoughts on that! We also discuss Damian Lillard’s trade request and big contracts for NBA role players, react to the recent separation of EA Sports and EA Games, and open up this week’s mailbag for some NBA 2K17 Overall Ratings trivia.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament Elite 8 Results

NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament Elite 8 Results

The real 2023 NCAA Tournament will shortly have its Final Four, but we’re already there on the virtual hardwood! After tipping off a couple of weeks ago, the Elite 8 has concluded in our NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament, which is being hosted by Dee and powered by Parsec.

Unfortunately, as we noted on last week’s NLSC Podcast, the quality of my connection forced me to withdraw from our NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament. However, sevin0seven was fortunately willing and able to take my place, and so the tournament progressed without any further interruptions.

Dee has been streaming all of the games on his YouTube channel, and then putting together highlight reels for the NLSC’s channel. I’ve posted them all below, along with the updated brackets. The Final Four will be tipping off soon, so stay tuned for more action!

A big thanks to everyone who is participating in the tournament, and tuning in to watch the games and highlights! Once again, the winner of the tournament will receive a $20 Steam gift card. For more information on how to connect and play games using Parsec, check out this tutorial that Dee put together. Feel free to share your thoughts on the tournament in the comments, as well as join in the discussion here in the Forum, or on our Discord. Also be sure to hit us up with any suggestions of other games you’d like to see us run tournaments with in the future!

NLSC Podcast #469: March Madness in Video Games

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #469 of the NLSC Podcast!

With March Madness underway, there’s no better time to talk about college basketball video games! This week, we’re joining the community in reflecting on our history with NCAA on the virtual hardwood, listing some of our all-time favourite college basketball titles, as well as a couple of regional variants. We also provide an update on the latest action and results from our NCAA Basketball 10 Parsec Tournament, and discuss plans for some College Slam content. Revisiting the possibility of college basketball video games some day making a return, we wonder whether an NCAA title would be EA Sports’ ticket back into the basketball gaming space, or if Visual Concepts would just swoop in and steal their thunder once again.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! NLSC Podcast #468: Our Favourite Basketball Game Mods

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #468 of the NLSC Podcast!

What better way to celebrate March Modness than by discussing some of our all-time favourite mods? We join the community in reminiscing about the mods that we’ve most enjoyed playing with, as well as the ones that inspired us to get into the hobby. We’re also sharing some stories behind creating fixes for games, and recap a session with a work-in-progress missing legends roster for NBA 2K10. The NLSC NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament has also tipped off with an intense game, and we’re looking forward to more great virtual hardwood action. Indeed, whether it’s picking up tools to mod or firing up favourites to play, we’re mad about basketball gaming this March!

NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament Tips Off This Weekend

It may be March Modness, but we’re also in the mood to celebrate March Madness! As Dee has announced on Twitter, he’s hosting an NLSC NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament over Parsec, which is set to tip off this weekend. The games begin on March 11th, with an Elite 8 bracket. I’ll be participating in this tournament, along with Stildo33, KingJMASE, jrolling2003, FathomDanny, BrentLane, TecmoBowlGGL, and Mole.

Like the real NCAA tournament, the games are single elimination. We’ll be playing two 12-minute halves, on the default difficulty setting. The winner will receive a $20 Steam gift card, courtesy of Dee. You can of course expect to see highlights of the games on our YouTube channel. Previous NLSC Tournaments have been a blast for all of the participants, full of goodwill, competitive spirit, and several spectacular moments on the virtual hardwood. I have no doubt that this tournament will be just as fun for everyone.

Check out the full brackets below! You can keep up to date with the results and highlight reels here in the Forum. While you’re waiting for the Tournament to tip off, check out my NCAA Basketball 10 retrospective for Wayback Wednesday that I posted back in 2021. Also hit us up with any suggestions for games that you’d like to see us run tournaments with in the future. For more information on how to connect and play basketball games (or indeed, anything) using Parsec, check out this tutorial that Dee put together.

NLSC Rewind 2022

NLSC Rewind 2022

Welcome to the NLSC Rewind for 2022! It feels like it was only a few months ago that I was compiling last year’s Rewind, but that’s how it goes these days. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that the last few years have all run together. That’s largely due to the pandemic, but it’s also true what they say: time does seem to go faster the older you are! In any event, it’s been another fun and productive year here at the NLSC.

Our modding community has been busy all year, seamlessly transitioning from NBA 2K22 to NBA 2K23 when the latter was released. A handful of older titles were also kept updated in 2022, including NBA 2K13 and NBA 2K14. Glancing at the various modding sections, it’s clear that even more great work will be coming in 2023, with some great projects brewing for classic games as well. As always, a big thank you to everyone who continues to release work here! I’d like to remind everyone that the upload facilities in our Downloads database remain 100% free and available to all.

With that out of the way, let’s get to the NLSC Rewind for 2022! For those who are unaware, I use the Rewind to share some “editor’s picks” of our original content from the past year. Obviously I encourage you to peruse our entire archives; as with topics in our Forum, old comments sections are still open, and I’m proud of all our work. At the same time, there were some features and episodes of the NLSC Podcast that I’m particularly proud of, and I believe that you’ll really enjoy checking them out if you did miss them the first time around (or perhaps, enjoy them again a second time!). Without any further ado, let’s rewind the year that was 2022 here at the NLSC!

NLSC Greatest Performances: The Delonte West Deluge

If you’re subscribed to the NLSC YouTube channel – and you absolutely should be! – then you may have seen that Dee4Three has tipped off a new video series: NLSC Greatest Performances! This series spotlights incredible performances on the virtual hardwood, and first up is Delonte West.

As you may recall, Delonte West had himself a night during our NBA Live 10 Tournament! In a series featuring LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, it was West who stepped up for Cavs4872 in the second half of Game 2 against QB1120 and the Lakers, scorching the nets for 39 points in just 12 minutes. Dee has compiled a highlight reel of Delonte’s scoring deluge, which came from a barrage of cold-blooded jumpers and fearless forays to the rim. Watch as West turns King James and the Black Mamba into mere spectators!

These epic performances by Virtual Hardwood Legends are as entertaining as putting up numbers with the all-time greats, and they stick in our minds for years to come. As this series continues, Dee will be spotlighting many incredible performances in basketball video games, new and old. From the superstars of the sport to Virtual Hardwood Legends to career mode avatars, stay tuned for a dazzling array of highlights in NLSC Greatest Performances!

NLSC Podcast #418: House Rules, Epic Duels, & Offline Views

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #418 of the NLSC Podcast!

Mad as it may seem, we were compelled to revisit NBA Live 07 for Xbox 360 this week. It’s as rough as we remembered, and doesn’t hold a candle to NBA Live 06 on the same platform, which was a far more fun game to dust off! The College Hoops 2K8 Tournament has also been a blast to play and to watch, with the Sweet 16 almost in the books. After catching up on some recent stories from NBA 2K14 MyCAREER, we discuss house rules when playing against the CPU. What’s the best way to ensure fairness, and challenge? In this week’s mailbag, we’re talking about ideas for offline modes and content. As you might expect, the community isn’t just about the online experience these days!

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! NLSC Podcast #404: Cheese Not Found

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #404 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

After an intense battle, the Semi-Finals of the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament are over, and the Finals match-up has been set. Once again, we note the importance of competing until the final buzzer. Following on from last week’s revisiting of NBA Live 96 PC, we played NBA Live 97 PC over Parsec, and basked in the radical 90s goodness of its presentation. We also played NBA Live 16, and tested a work-in-progress mod for NBA 2K16. Meanwhile, the latest patch for NBA 2K22 Next Gen has cut down on cheese, and some gamers aren’t happy. Conversely, we’re all for it, and push back on the suggestion that the game shouldn’t be realistic. We also reflect on the importance of shot timing mechanics.

NLSC Podcast #391: A Tale of Two Developer Blogs

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #391 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

The NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament has tipped off, and it’s been a blast so far! It seems we’ve also found the chief cause of input lag: location, location, location. Nevertheless, our Road Trip continues in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, and a recent session produced an exciting moment indeed. Parsec has also allowed the community to connect and play with some fantastic retro season mods for NBA 2K10 and NBA 2K11 PC, which don’t get enough attention. We also address a couple of concerning issues in the modding community. The latest NBA 2K22 developer blogs cover gameplay and MyTEAM, and we’re a little more positive about how the latter is shaping up. Finally, could we see some mods for Basketball Classics in the future?
