NLSC Podcast #579: Fantasy Drafts in NBA 2K25

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #579 of the NLSC Podcast!

What are the best lineups that we can assemble picking from players in the modern NBA? This week, we fire up NBA 2K25 and run separate fantasy drafts in MyNBA Eras to craft teams that we believe would be both successful and a lot of fun to play with on the virtual hardwood. The exercise leads us to share a few more thoughts on NBA 2K25, and the community’s attitude towards it. We also recap a couple of fun co-op sessions with NBA Live 2000 and NBA 2K13, using the All-Decade teams and a 1985 season roster respectively. Both games continue to impress us all these years later, demonstrating that the best releases are timeless and undoubtedly worth revisiting.

Highlights from NBA 2K25, NBA Live 2000, & More

Highlights from NBA 2K25, NBA Live 2000, & More

It’s time for another NLSC YouTube roundup! As you may have seen, for Halloween I put together a new Tales from the Virtual Hardwood video, diving into an urban legend involving Jason Collier and NBA Live 06. On top of that, Dee and I have also been uploading highlights from our co-op and individual gaming sessions, featuring NBA 2K25, NBA Live 2000, and other titles.

First of all, there’s a spectacular reel of highlights from Dee and his brother’s ongoing Legends MyNBA in NBA 2K25. The latest reel covers Games 11 through 20, with the likes of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, and Clyde Drexler all doing what they do best.

Dee also put together a reel of the best moments from our game of NBA Live 2000, in which we took on the Indiana Pacers with the Detroit Pistons. It was an unusual game that wasn’t as successful as a majority of our other co-op sessions, but it reminded us of the teams’ interesting lineups, and the brilliance of NBA Live 2000 PC. In case you missed it, we discussed the game in Episode #550 of the NLSC Podcast.

I usually post bulletins whenever I upload a new entry in the NBA 2K14 Retro Series, but I neglected to do so for the latest one. That is of course a 1986 showdown between the rival Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, which ended in dramatic fashion. I’ve already played a few other retro matchups that will be uploaded in the near future.

Finally, Dee and I connected this past week to play NBA 2K13 using the 1996 URB roster. We opted to take on the Atlanta Hawks with the Orlando Magic, and it was a blast playing with young Shaq and Penny! Stay tuned for our discussion of that session in the next NLSC Podcast.

Check out all of those highlights from NBA 2K25, NBA Live 2000, NBA 2K14, and NBA 2K13 below! As always, be sure to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel if you haven’t already, and feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play.

NLSC Podcast #498: Mods vs. MyNBA Eras, & Overdue Call-Outs

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #498 of the NLSC Podcast!

After revisiting NBA in the Zone 2 over Parsec last week, we recap a fun showdown as we took on the Nuggets with the SuperSonics, while reflecting on the sim-arcade hybrid approach and comparing the game to NBA Live 97. We also played NBA 2K13 using the 1993 season roster from URB, which leads us to compare the attention to detail in retro mods to the lack thereof in MyNBA Eras. Speaking of inaccuracies, the WNBA Players Association called out NBA 2K24’s terrible player likenesses, a move that we wholeheartedly support. We also imagine the ideal gameplay for NBA 2K and NBA Live by combining our favourite mechanics from previous games in both series, and give a heads up on a great PC gaming deal.

NLSC Podcast #468: Our Favourite Basketball Game Mods

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #468 of the NLSC Podcast!

What better way to celebrate March Modness than by discussing some of our all-time favourite mods? We join the community in reminiscing about the mods that we’ve most enjoyed playing with, as well as the ones that inspired us to get into the hobby. We’re also sharing some stories behind creating fixes for games, and recap a session with a work-in-progress missing legends roster for NBA 2K10. The NLSC NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament has also tipped off with an intense game, and we’re looking forward to more great virtual hardwood action. Indeed, whether it’s picking up tools to mod or firing up favourites to play, we’re mad about basketball gaming this March!

The Friday Five: 5 Ways NBA 2K Modding Is Better

The Friday Five: 5 Ways NBA 2K Modding Is Better

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five ways that the NBA 2K modding scene is better than what we had with NBA Live back in the day.

So, last week I discussed five ways that NBA Live modding was better than the NBA 2K modding scene. It’s always difficult to write an article like that without sounding like a grumpy old man yelling out clouds, and lamenting bygone days that were far from perfect if we’re being completely honest. As I acknowledged, there were issues in the NBA Live modding community, too. Some of them remain problems with NBA 2K modding, but there are others that we no longer have to deal with. It certainly isn’t all doom and gloom when it comes to tinkering with NBA 2K.

While the different approach to design and file structure has presented us with some new challenges, there are aspects of NBA 2K on PC that make modding much easier. As a community, we’ve also been able to build upon what we established, and take advantage of new technology to help each other out. I stand by what I wrote last week, because there are aspects of NBA Live modding that would be great to have when creating work for NBA 2K. However, there are exciting possibilities with NBA 2K modding, and it’s why I’m interested in getting more involved with it. Here are five ways that the hobby has improved since we started modding NBA 2K on PC.

NBA 2K23 MyTEAM, NBA Inside Drive 2004, & NBA 2K13 Videos

NBA 2K23 MyTEAM, NBA Inside Drive 2004, & NBA 2K13 Videos

As I’ve mentioned, Dee4Three has been spearheading an effort to create more content for our YouTube channel! In addition to co-hosting the NLSC Podcast with me, Dee has also been uploading gameplay videos from an assortment of titles. These range from classics and forgotten releases to his progress through NBA 2K23 MyTEAM Domination.

Dee’s reels and mixes are always great, and you’ll definitely want to check out his recent uploads. For a start, he’s spotlighting NBA Inside Drive 2004; the last game in the NBA Inside Drive series, and an underrated release in general. See what it’s all about with a clash between the Houston Rockets and Memphis Grizzlies!

Next up is a game between the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks in NBA 2K13, using the 1992 season mod from U R Basketball. As I noted in Episode #457 of the NLSC Podcast, Dee did an incredible job portraying Michael Jordan on the virtual hardwood, with authentic highlights leading up to a dramatic finish.

Finally, Dee’s most recent upload is another highlight reel from his journey through Domination in NBA 2K23 MyTEAM. This time he’s taking on the Memphis Grizzlies challenges, with a squad that includes some fantastic pickups. A recent post in the Forum leads to a discussion of the challenges presented by big modding projects, particularly retro season rosters. We also answer a question about downplaying past eras to promote the current NBA, and open up the mailbag to find out the first thing that gamers will be doing when they get their hands on NBA 2K23.

NLSC Podcast #408: The Worst Basketball Video Game Ever

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #408 of the NLSC Podcast!

The NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament has drawn to a close, and we must say, it was a success! We’re looking forward to future tournaments with games such as NBA Jam and NCAA Basketball 09. However, one game that we definitely won’t be using is Kidz Sports Basketball. After playing it together, we’re inclined to call it the worst basketball game ever made. Thankfully, we’ve also played some much better games as of late, including NBA 2K13, NBA in the Zone, and Basketball Classics. There’s also some modding news to recap, and a few teasers of our own to drop! In this week’s mailbag, we’re talking about fighting with friends and family over disagreements on the virtual hardwood.
