Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.
My apologies if this week’s topic comes off as a little cheap, but I really do enjoy doing the NLSC Podcast every week and it’s only natural that we plug our original content from time to time. Quite a few of you are tuning in to the show every week and have sent in questions for our mailbag segments, which definitely encourages us to keep getting together to talk about some of our favourite subjects and recording the conversation so that you can all listen to it. We certainly appreciate the support!
Needless to say, we’re always keen to expand our audience, so for this week’s Friday Five I’m picking five episodes of the NLSC Podcast that I recommend listening to, if you’re wondering what it’s all about and are looking to get into the show. Consider them my “editor’s picks” from the first year and a bit of the NLSC Podcast.
1. Scott O’Gallagher Interview – November 18th, 2013
I must admit that I feel slightly guilty about including this one, as I’m the lone regular host on it and I don’t want to slight the rest of the guys, all of whom I always enjoy talking to when we record a show. However, it certainly was a significant episode and one that I’m proud of, being our first audio interview with an NBA Live developer.
NBA Live 14 Gameplay Designer Scott O’Gallagher was kind enough to put aside a little over an hour of his Sunday evening just before the release of the game to talk to me and candidly answer all of my questions to the best of his ability. My aim was to represent the community as best I could, not only asking questions about the things that I was interested in, but also making sure that I asked questions that the rest of the NLSC Team had given me and that I adequately covered issues that the community wanted to know about.
I’d like to think that it provides a good overview of NBA Live 14, as well as its development and the philosophy of the development team at EA Tiburon, with some information that hadn’t been discussed too much during the preview season. My thanks again to Scott; we’re certainly keen to have more features like this in the future.
2. Episode #29 (with Da_Czar) – May 15th, 2013
This episode boasts our biggest panel to date as it features six members of our staff, along with special guest Da_Czar. It’s also the longest episode of the NLSC Podcast so far, at a little over three hours. I certainly understand if you don’t want to listen to it all in just one sitting, but it’s an episode that we’re certainly proud of and we had a lot of fun recording it. With so many people on the show, it had the potential to get quite chaotic, but I humbly feel that we pulled it off quite well.
Following a few news items at the top of the show, we dedicated the rest of the episode to an in-depth discussion on realism in basketball video games, comparing them to what we see on TV and talking about how the games can be made even more realistic. It was a fun discussion to take part in with some really good and interesting ideas being put forward, and I do believe that comes across when listening to the episode. If you’re a sim head and you’d like something to listen to while you’re working or commuting, I’d definitely recommend giving it a listen.
3. Episode #45 – September 11th, 2013
This episode, recorded a few weeks before the release of the current gen version of NBA 2K14, is one that I believe came together really well. To me, it felt like it would turn out to be one of the better episodes that we’d done, even as we were recording it. By Episode #45, JaoSming, Arcane and myself had become the regular panel of hosts following Leftos’ departure, allowing us to develop our chemistry as a three man booth.
The preview season was beginning to heat up that week and we had plenty to talk about with some interesting news items to sink our teeth into, along with another edition of the listener mailbag. It may sound egotistical, but it’s an episode where I felt we were definitely on our game, as we discussed and speculated upon NBA Live 14 and NBA 2K14. It’s one that I really enjoyed recording and I was ultimately very pleased with how it turned out. If you give it a listen, I hope that you feel the same way.
4. Episode #55 – November 20th, 2013
We’re going back just a few weeks with this one, but Episode #55 was an important show as it came shortly after the release of the PlayStation 4, along with NBA Live 14 and NBA 2K14 next gen. Pdub joined us for the episode and together with JaoSming, provided our panel’s initial impressions of the first basketball games released on the new generation of consoles. After months of speculating and analysing every preview and piece of news that came our way, we could finally offer some hands-on impressions.
Arcane and I obviously had to wait a couple more weeks until the Australian release of the PlayStation 4, but it was fun hearing JaoSming and Pdub talk about the games and asking them a few questions about features that we – and hopefully our listeners – were interested in finding out about. If you’re still mulling over the decision to get a next gen console and the new basketball games, be sure to give it a listen.
5. Episode #57 – December 4th, 2013
I know that I’m going with a really recent one here, but it’s an episode that I hope most listeners found to be interesting, informative and above all, enjoyable. First of all, we brought in a special guest as Vl@d Zola Jr. provided us with some information on the new RED MC with support for NBA 2K14, which at the time was just a few days away from release. Vl@d also gave us some insight into the background and development of the tool that has allowed the creation of some outstanding mods for the NBA 2K series these past few years.
It’s also the first episode that we recorded after Arcane and I had gotten our PlayStation 4s, so we were finally able to give our initial impressions of the next gen basketball games. It’s not often that I offer a dissenting opinion and I must admit, I enjoyed doing so in a slightly colourful and provocative manner. To that end, I believe it might ultimately be a fun episode to look back on, as I’m sure that some of my opinions will change in the coming weeks…in which case, I expect I’ll have a chuckle at my own expense.
So, those are my editor’s picks for the NLSC Podcast so far. Thank you as always to everyone who has been tuning in regularly and if you haven’t checked out the Podcast yet, I certainly encourage you to give it a listen sometime. We’re always looking for ways to improve the show so if you do have any suggestions, be it topics you’d like to hear us talk about, opinions about the length of the show or anything else that would make it more enjoyable for you, please let us know. Submissions for the listener mailbag are always welcome, so feel free to hit us up in this thread. Thanks for checking in this week, please join me again next Friday for another Five.
